2019: Da hit list (Part 1)
Disclaimer 1: This is not a ranking, or a countdown. Solely subjective. Definitely other songs that I like but didn’t include (don’t shoot me)
Disclaimer 2: I’m only human, with the same 24 hours as you, I HAVEN’T HEARD EVERY SONG that dropped in 2019. Jesus H (nobody has complained yet just a pre-emptive counter)
Disclaimer 3: Standard American English is not my native dialect. I learned what is (academically) called Ebonics or what I like to call Black American English (BAE) or what me and the homies call “HomieTalk.” I will do my best to communicate, but bear with your boy.
Disclaimer 4: Sometimes I punctuate the British way, outside quotes, sometimes I don’t at all. This is intentional, I simply dgaf and do my own thing in many areas of my life (prolly why I’m the Black Sheep of the family…)
Disclaimer 5: I don’t co-sign some of the shit these artists do and say on and off mic. I let God judge them, that ain’t up to me.
Disclaimer 6: This is a living, breathing document (like The Constitution) I reserve the right to add (or subtract as necessary).
Much Love,
Kapital Pea
Future ft. French Montana - NASA: Unreleased single dropped on SoundCloud around the same time “The WZRD” came out. That Ginuwine “Pony” sample is sure to get your clit wet… or your tip wet (from the pre-cum).
iLoveMakonnen ft. Gucci Mane - Spendin’: If you spendin’ and you winnin’ and you limiting yo sinnin’, this song’s for you! Makonnen be breaking bread wit his niggas. Man’s a giver, gotta respect that.
Delivery Boys - Cherish 2: Posse cut, for everybody who getting it on the road wit the homies, nice lil slow-tempo anthem to play when you out there grinding. Triumphant, bell tolls, some will compare them to Brockhampton, but they riding they own wave. “Delivery Boys are the chosen few, passed down and passed through the eons of life, and I hold thoughts of my brothers inside of my heart everytime that we cyph.”
Boogie - Silent Ride: From his debut studio project “Everythings For Sale” The Shady/Interscope signee gives us a glimpse of his mind as he tries to balance the dark with the light. “Out of sight, out of mind, I can't lie, I'm detached, I need guidance” If I could give Boogie any suggestions for quieting the voices in his head, it would be clean cooch + his choice of downers. (Don’t do drugs kids!)
Lil Skies - Real Ties: “Money comin’ in, people knowing that we lit” When you constantly grinding, eventually you start shining. And people take notice. Haters, lovers and everybody in between. The PA rapper lets us know that he ain’t forget where he came from. And if you run up, prepared to get done up!
Trapboy Freddy ft. Young Thug - Smoke: It’s a vibe! On this track, the Dallas rapper sends a warning to all buster-ass mark-ass tricks. If they want the smoke, he got it for ‘em. Also sending love to all the smokers who can’t put that smoke out, to let it smoke out. “It’s gon’ go down if you want some smoke now!”
Boogie ft. JID - Soho: Another standout track from “Everythings For Sale” major loner vibes on this one. I’ll let Boogie tell you “Please no more meeting at SoHo, Please no more thinking we bro bros, I ain't been seen in like oh, no, I ain't been seen in like oh, I do not beef in the photos, I don't be tweaking for promo, I keep my thing on the low though, I got a team but I'm solo, I do not speak what I don't know” Dreamville MC JID’s airy vocals complement Boogie’s bars well.
Future - Tricks on Me: Closing track from “The Wizard” the ATL crooner goes in over one of my favorite beats from the album. Fyutch wonders if his mind is playing tricks on him. If I had to guess I’d say it could be the percoccet, molly, percoccet (see what I did there?)
Tae Bae ft. Wale - D’usse: Has there ever been a bad track titled “D’usse” (prolly, but this one and the Wayne one go hard.) Named after Hov’s Cognac brand and featuring the usual lyrics about money, cars and big ol’booties, what sets this one apart is the artists’ delivery, the beat, and Wale smashing his verse like Wilt in the 70’s.
G4Shi ft. G-Eazy - My Year: Double G like my Panamian Chick’s tittays! (That was a Gashi & G-Eazy reference btw…) I mean the perfect anthem for January “This gone be my year!” Every year we feel this way. God-willing one day it’s true for you! (Disclaimer: of course I don’t have no Panamanian Chick, I barely get buns. My lady a buck tooth, big booty bitty wit no neck, I call her Head n Shoulders…)
J. Cole - Middle Child: The Grammy-nominated track and 1st single from Dreamville’s posse album “Revenge of the Dreamers 2” serves as a status update from GOD MC J. Cole. From how he plans to be a rising tide to all his homies, to how Drake got him a watch (how sweet). Cole World displays his elite lyricism over a horn-laced T-Minus beat. Fun-Fact: This is J. Cole’s highest charting track. Ever.
Planet Giza ft. Mick Jenkins - Brk Frm Nrml: Soulful bop about spicing things up wit yo main lady. Get out the routine and do something different like put Frank’s Hot Sauce on that clitty and lick lick lick it til her multiple O’s shake the bed frame to its limit.
Polo G ft. Lil Tjay - Pop Out: The masses first became aware of the two up and coming artists from this breakout smash hit. On the quadruple-Platinum track, Polo warns the opps that he will in fact pop out at the party with his gang. There may be a robbery, so he suggests that you tuck your chain like DJ Pooh when Deebo approached. He also explains that he is an expert marksman, so don’t test his aim.
Rockie Fresh ft. Chris Brown - Must Be: One of my fav underrated rappers, Maybach Music artist and Chicago’s very own, Rockie Fresh, teams up with Breezy to make one for the bitties. “She’s a real pain in the ass, but she still get the bag…” #AintThatTheTruth
Meek Mill ft. Drake - Going Bad: UNITY!!! After their tiff, which saw the 2 superstars go back and forth on wax, they peaced it up and dropped a banger for the world. This track served as the lead single off Meek’s Platinum album “Championships” It had the club going up on a Tuesday (and every other day too). Peace wins!
Maverick Sabre ft. Jorja Smith - Slow Down: The two Brits concocted this soulful jam about a couple going through a bumpy patch. They encourage each other to slow down so that the relationship won’t fall apart. And to “come around to my ways” Love me for me. Then “come around to my place” and get this work.
Khalid - Talk: Grammy nominated, certified smash produced by Disclosure. Khalid asks his main damie can they just talk about where they’re going. He’s encouraging clear lines of communication. He wanna know “is we just smashin or is there something more here?”
Berner & Mozzy ft. YG & Logic - Ayy: Bay area OG’s Berner & Mozzy go in on this track, describing how they get money on the road through various endeavors and how treacherous it can sometimes be. YG holds down the hook and Logic absolutely rips his verse on this track. A Mariano Rivera-esque close to put the cherry on top of this Cali-heavy banger.
Jacquees - Wow: Play this in your Civic Sedan and shawty gon’ get to drippin! By the time you get home she’ll be ready for you to put your pole in her hole. (I apologize if I offended anyone with this description, I mean no harm and I love the Lord.)
Smif-N-Wessun ft. Musiq Soulchild & Rapsody - Ocean Drive: For all the boom-bap, ol’ skool fans, these legends drop a tune for the ladies with a soulful foundation. Musiq on the hook and Rapsody spitting fire on the closing verse. Big fan of the dual perspective love songs.
G4Shi ft. Ledri Vula - That’s Mine: Super dope beat! Island vibes, Young Gash back with another one for his shawty. She his rock, she his baby, she drive him crazy. But she a savage in the sack and he loves her.
King Crooked - Bar’d Up: I’m a sucker for samples. Especially a Naughty by Nature “Uptown” sample laced with bars from one of the best lyricists of our time. Yes please!
Montana of 300 - Envy Me (Remix): One of the most underrated rappers remixed Calboy’s 2018 hit. He warns his enemies to quit all that internet ‘bangin or else he may be forced to send shots at their headtop. Seamlessly goes from bars to melodies, no problemo.
NLE Choppa - Shotta Flow: The teen rapper burst onto the scene with this hookless cut. Simple beat carried by keys in which the youngin’ drops caffeinated bars about how he will dust that ass if you think you tough!e has since connected with the light and minimized his aggression as he helps lead others to peace.
Pivot Gang - Jason Statham Pt. 2: The Chicago collective dropped this smooth track, describing regular day shit, chillin, getting guap and transportin’ like Jason Statham.
Birdman & Juvenile - JAG (Just Another Gangsta): The New Orleans legends dropped an album with the same name in 2019 and this standout track embodies the sound that shot Baby and Juvie to the top of the charts in the late 90’s.
Money Man - Feb 20th Freestyle: Another one of my favorite underrated artists. Money Man spent 2019 dropping hookless original tracks, “freestyles” if you will. The ATL MC goes in over a minimalist beat touching on firearms, courting women, inhaling cannabis, expensive automobiles and other facets of the high life. If you like this one, check out “Saturday Night Freestyle”
G-Eazy ft. Blueface - West Coast: Young Gerold speaks on his daily activities including creating generational wealth, ingesting small amounts of hallucinogens, and consuming alcohol in large quantities while Blueface admits that he really enjoys sexual intercourse and his ladies have given him a nickname based on that fact.
Runway Richy - Trappin Ain’t Dead: The title comes from a Jeezy bar and Richy kills the “Gangsta’s Paradise” sample. If you like gangstas, paradise, and/or Honey Nut Cheerios, go on ahead and give this track a listen.
2 Chainz ft. Lil Wayne & E-40 - 2 Dollar Bill: Standout from “Rap or Go to the League” the followup to 2 Chainz' Platinum-selling album “Pretty Girls Like Trap Music” the three OGs describe how rare they are (like a 2 Dollar Bill). Fire production from Mustard, Terrace Martin & GYLTTRYP.
Juice Wrld - 10 Feet: Before his early demise, the Chicago Artist had risen to the upper crust of the music world. This track from his 2019 album “Death Race for Love” samples Daniel Caesar’s “Who Hurt You?” and heavily features two of Juice Wrld’s favorite things, Percs and Poonani. A departure from most of his work, he trades melodies for straight bars and it’s straight heat.
Pardison Fontaine - Madden Flow: Another highly underrated rapper (who ironically has an album titled “Under8ted”) Pardi bares his soul about the come up, his main lady hoarding his attention and sucking the life blood from him like energy vampire Colin Robinson from “What We Do in the Shadows” and ends with an instructional on how to cut off fake friends and cats in your circle that bring nada to the table. Tough Tune. (Note: this is prior to his current relationship so this isn't a sub at his boo thang)
Salaam Remi ft. Gallant - Roll The Dice: Legendary producer Salaam Remi (responsible for many of Nas’ hits) enlists singer Gallant to get the ladies juices flowing. If you wanna get ya lady’s hot slot all moist, throw this on in ya Camry and let the magic happen! Gallant is one of the best artists flying under the radar today. Check out his track “Gentleman” too.
Logic - Bohemian Trapsody: Nothing like the song from whence it gets its name, The Biracial Beast from the East sings over an acoustic-heavy beat about two of my favorite subjects, weed and women, bud and booty, mary jane and Mary Jane. Great track to play when you strapping on that jetpack and headed for outer space. Beat switches up halfway and Logic transitions from melody to bars. One of my favorite tracks of the year.
03 Greedo x Mustard ft. YG - Wasted: Strip club anthem! 03 Greedo is one of my favorite new MC’s. He came on to my radar controversially, making news for declaring 2pac overrated (highly disagree but this is America and everyone’s entitled to their opinion, no matter how unpopular). The Cali rapper is currently serving 20+ years in a Texas prison for multiple counts of Nigga Shit. Before he went in he took a Pac approach and recorded mountains of music including a project with Mustard “Still Summer in the Projects”. Other Tough Tunes from SSINTP “Twisting The Lens”, “Trap House” (ft. Shoreline Mafia), “In The Morning”, “10 Purple Summers” and “Loaded”.
Lil Nas X ft. Billy Ray Cyrus - Old Town Road (Remix): This track will go down in infamy. The original version (sans Cyrus) went viral when Billboard refused to allow it on The Country Music Charts after complaints that it wasn’t country enough. Well the people spoke (and listened) and helped this track become one of the biggest songs of all time. It stood at #1 on the Billboard charts for the most consecutive weeks all-time (19). Fastest song to go Diamond. Getting the assist from Miley’s pops, LNX went on to parlay this crossover track into millions of dollars. Sometimes controversy can be a blessing in disguise.
Soulja Boy ft. Hammon & Rari - Jeopardy: Amidst the biggest comeback of all time (see his Breakfast Club interview) Young Draco samples the Final Jeopardy music on this one. He touches on everything from cooking dope, getting robbed, avoiding the authorities, smoking loud, his diamond collection, fast whips and joining the gym. His hobbies are diverse and his creativity knows no bounds.
King Combs ft. Jeremih - Naughty: Diddy Jr. and ‘Mih dropped this one for the ladies. Something light with KC promising shawty the world, letting her know she deserves a man with vast resources and a willingness to splurge on her including access to Miami's exclusive Star Island, private jets and custom Rolex watches.
Uno The Activist - Glad You’re Back: I’m a sucker for a sample (I feel like I’ve shared this already). Sampling Ashanti’s “Don’t Ever Let Me Go” Uno delivers pussy-wetting tunes about getting his baby back, baby back, baby back. It’s a perfect track to play in your Hyundai Sonata when picking up your main lady from prison after she served 2 years of a 3 year sentence for armed robbery, grand larceny, and identity theft.
Khalid - Right Back: Khalid had himself a fucking year in 2019 with the release of his album “Free Spirit”. His evolved sound had a more mainstream appeal without sacrificing the quality that drew him the attention of millions with “Location.” “Got the weed we could sit by the beach if you want to get faded, but if that’s not the vibe, yeah it’s cool, we can save it for later” Real player shit!
