2020: The Hit List (Part 2 of 4)
April-ish
Shy Glizzy - Lonely Vibes
RMR - Dealer
Boosie Badazz - Right Dea (ft. Dee Rogers)
Bryson Tiller - Slept On You
Clever - Pop a Pill
Deante Hitchcock ft. J.I.D - I Got Money Now
Trouble ft. Jeezy - Medusa: RIP Trouble. He was murdered earlier this year when the ex-boyfriend of a chick his was messing with broke into her place and seen them together. This is one of my favorite songs of his. Beat is fire and the repeated “M’kay” on the hook sounds like Mr. Mackey from South Park.
Leven Kali - Perfect Is Boring
Hopsin - Covid Mansion
Lil Uzi Vert - Sasuke
SiR ft. Westside Boogie - Rapper Weed
NBA Youngboy ft. DaBaby - Thug of Spades
J.I. - Proud of Me: JI the prince of NY got his first dose of fame competing as a contestant on a rap show. He kept working and this song right here was his first big hit (I think). It’s dedicated to one of his shorties. He hope’s she’s proud of him now that he’s made it big.
May-ish
AJ Tracey ft. MoStack - Dinner Guest
Hannibal Burress ft. Ron Lamont - Judge Judy: Comedian Hannibal Burress actually appeared on Judge Judy and was ruled against so he made this diss track and it’s actually pretty fucking good.
Lil Baby ft. 42 Dugg - We Paid: This was the point where Lil Baby officially arrived at superstardom. His album “My Turn” would go on to become the 3rd highest selling Hip-Hop album of 2020 but the turn of events (pun intended) is one for the history books. So, first he had “Woah” on the album which at the time was his biggest hit. Album was dope on its own, but then he dropped the Deluxe. In my time on this Earth, I don’t ever remember loving a Deluxe more than the album but that was the case with “My Turn”. And usually the Deluxe songs are throwaways but LB caught one of the biggest hits in his career with the 42 Dugg collab “We Paid”. It was this track that played on the radio, in the club (strip & regular) non-stop all summer 2020. There’s another track a lil later in the list that really solidified him as a titan of Hip-Hop but “My Turn” (Deluxe) with “We Paid”, “All In” and “Get Money” (three of my all time fave LB tracks) really took his career to the upper echelon of music.
24kGoldn ft. Kaash Paige - Unbelievable
Yung Tory ft. Pressa - Timeout
Chief Keef - No Bap
YG - Laugh Now Cry Later!
Nate Husser - I Just Bought Another Neck
Mak Sauce ft. Lil Yachty & NLE Choppa - Good Morning (Remix)
S1mba ft. Poundz, ZieZie & Ivorian Doll - Rover (Remix)
Rob $tone ft. G Perico - Savage: Rob $tone caught one with the Kill Bill inspired “Chill Bill”. He caught another one when he got G Perico for this track “Savage” with West Coast vibes and one of the best beats on this list.
Lil Keed - Wavy
Tory Lanez - Temperature Rising
Polo G ft. BJ The Chicago Kid - Wishing For A Hero
Ras Austin - Team Loner
iann dior ft. Lil Baby - Prospect: “Nowadays I get what I want” Lil Baby also upped his profile by doing hella features for a wide array of artists. Young up and coming Emo rapper, iann dior, being one of them. Their styles are contrasting but they gel on the track. This song played on the radio non-stop.
Key Glock - Son of Gun
Migos ft. NBA Youngboy - Need It
June-Ish
G4shi - Paranoid
JayDaYoungan ft. Kevin Gates - Peer Pressure
Sleepy Hallow - 6am in NY: Sleep been puttin in that work. This is probably my favorite solo song of his. He gets introspective and talks about his mental health and how he wasn’t doing well at the time (this is tough for anyone to admit, let alone a young NY Drill rapper). He talks about how money changes things. A lot of wisdom, a lot of gems from the young spitter. And with Great John on the beat, you know it’s gon’ be heat.
Kodak Black ft. WizDaWizard & Mike Smiff - Vultures Cry 2
Tsu Surf ft. Benny The Butcher - Blacc Cream
Spillage Village, EARTHGANG, J.I.D ft. Jurdan Bryant, Mereba & Hollywood JB - End of Daze
Tyla Yaweh ft. Post Malone - Tommy Lee
The Kid Laroi ft. Juice WRLD - GO: The Kid Laroi got a big assist from heaven when Juice Wrld blessed his track before his untimely death. In the intro, you can hear Juice talking about his feature price (250K) and how he’s waivin it for TKL as a birthday gift. The song went on to become a smash.
Lil Baby - The Bigger Picture: This is the track that got Lil Baby outta here. We knew he could do the trap rap, street shit but the socially conscious shit over a trap beat? This was unlike anything we’d ever heard (Jeezy was the closest thing but it was always a part of his DNA). Right after George Floyd’s death, Baby cooked this up, video and all. He even tried to bridge the gap between Black and White. Gave his honest opinion about police. After this though, he said no more conscious shit, his mentions musta been crazy. You dip your toe in them political waters and you see how passionate people are about everything.
RMR ft. Westside Gunn - WELFARE
Young T & Bugsey ft. Headie One - Don’t Rush
J. Cole - Snow On Da Bluff
AK the Savior - Master Roshi
Anderson .Paak - Lockdown
Kierra Sheard - Something Has to Break: I first saw this song performed at the end of the BET Awards in 2020. Something about it touched me deep down in my soul. I’m definitely not a big Gospel guy (although that’s all my dad played growing up) but this is a good one.
Flo Milli - Like That Bitch
Lancey Foux - TIME FOR WAR !¡
D Smoke & SiR - Let Go
Kiana Lede - Dear Mr. President
Jack Harlow ft. DaBaby, Tory Lanez & Lil Wayne - WHAT’S POPPIN (Remix)
