2020: The Hit List (Part 3 of 4)
July-Ish
A Boogie wit Da Hoodie & Don Q ft. Lil Uzi Vert - Flood My Wrist
Russ - Live From the Villa
Ebenezer ft. Stefflon Don - 3 AM in LA
K Camp x Rare Sound ft. Mozzy - Stack N Pray
Shoreline Mafia - Change Ya Life
Wifisfuneral - End of Story
Tee Grizzley ft. Lil Keed - Slime
JuiceWrld ft. Marshmello - Come & Go
StaySolidRocky ft. Lil Uzi Vert - Party Girl (Remix): This one samples the international smash hit “Barbie Girl” by Aqua (over a Billion views on YT). StaySolidRocky flipped it to Party Girl, slowed it down and landed a viral hit. With Lil Uzi on the remix, it was just sauce on sauce on sauce.
YG - Swag
DJDS x Tory Lanez x Rema - Simple Things
100 gecs ft. Lil West & Tony Velour - gecgecgec (Remix)
Pop Smoke ft. Lil Tjay - Mood Swings: Pop Smoke’s untimely passing was a lowlight in the midst of a global pandemic. He was on his way to superstardom, leading the NY drill charge. The good thing is he had a super dope album in the tuck and a team who was able to put it together in a cohesive manner. The album went on to become the #2 selling Hip-Hop album of the year. RIP Pop Smoke.
Sada Baby - Good Wealthy
RÜFÜS DU SOL - Like An Animal
DJ Khaled ft. Drake - GREECE: This is one of my favorite Drake songs and the shit don’t even sound like him. It’s singing Drake, offering to fly a big booty bitty out to Greece and he even incorporates some French. I’m actively searching for a big booty bitty to fly out to Greece, preferably with stable income, a Bachelor's Degree, no more than 2 baby daddies, toned calves, a credit score 700 or above, and no gag reflex (I don’t think I’m asking for much).
Lupe Fiasco & Kaelin ft. Virgil Abloh - Shoes
Stormi Maya - Black Man Magic
Headie One x Drake - Only You Freestyle
Tyla Yaweh ft. DaBaby - Stuntin On You
SAINt Jhn & J. Balvin - Roses (Imanbek Remix): SAINt Jhn blew up with “Roses” but this version was the one that was ubiquitous on the radio and in clubs. I imagine the crossover appeal with J. Balvin made this version appealing to Latin music lovers as well.
TMG Fresh ft. Tee Grizzley - Champagne Cry
Chase B & Don Toliver ft. Gunna - Cafeteria
Quin NFN ft. Mozzy - G Route
Killy Kyleon & Slim Thug - Wishing On A Star
jpegmafia - living single
August-Ish
A$AP Ferg ft. Nicki Minaj & MadeInTYO - Move Ya Hips
R-Mean ft. Wiz Khalifa, Berner & B-Real - Kings
Murda Beatz ft. Ty Dolla $ign & Polo G - Doors Unlocked
Snakehips & Jess Glynne ft. A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie & Davido - Lie For You
Wiz Khalifa - Top Down
Lil Murda - Fallin’: So the hit Starz series has produced some catchy bops and the first big one was this track about Fallin in love by the rapper Lil Murda (played by J. Alphonse Nicholson). It was featured multiple times during the first season and got quite a bit of radio play as well.
DJ SHAB ft. Lil Poppa & OMB Peezy - AfterLife
2 Chainz ft. Lil Wayne - Money Maker
DaBaby ft. Gunna - TLC
Bodega Bamz - Waiting For Tonight
Drake ft. Lil Durk - Laugh Now Cry Later: This was Drake’s smash single of the year. You know he does this from time to time like with 0 to 100. This is his first collab with Lil Durk. The video was epic. It was my first time seeing Druski. It had Odell, Marshawn, KD and a young lady who I was familiar with because of her internet presence and past involvement with Breezy. It also renewed his relationship with Nike after he was rumored to be taking a deal with Adidas.
Rico Nasty - IPHONE
Sleepy Hallow x Sheff G - Tip Toe
LB Spiffy - Kawasaki
Slatt Zy - Drama
Headie One ft. AJ Tracey & Stormzy - Ain’t It Different: So most of us got hip to Headie when Drake appeared on “Only One Freestyle” but mans was no flash in the pan. Headie linked with fellow Brits AJ Tracey & Stormzy for this flip of Crazy Town’s hit “Butterfly”. It’s a top tier track.
Metro Marrs - Oh Yea
Nas ft. Fivio Foreign & A$AP Ferg - Spicy
Vic Mensa - Vendetta: My cousin first put me onto Vic Mensa early in his career when he was part of the group Kids These Days. This song was a comeback of sorts and a statement that this nigga is relevant musically, got bars for days, and is a trendsetter/tastemaker. Somebody tried to troll him before this was released and this was for all the doubters and the naysayers. He can do this shit when he wanna, and at an extremely high level. Also, this track spurred me to fly to Chicago and try the local chicken joint, Uncle Remus. Ye’s 3rd listening party for Donda also happened to be that week and I went for that too and I was in line at Harold’s in Phoenix and a nigga told me that west side Chicago niggas fuck wit Uncle Remus more than Harold’s so I had to try it. (Vic mention’s Uncle Remus on the track if ya dunno).
August 08 ft. Barney Bones - BUSSDOWN YOUR SOUL
Rockie Fresh, Wale & Arin Ray - Hold On
September-Ish
Jay Critch x Vendetta x Mari Mac - The Line Up
Sprado ft. NLE Choppa - Magic
Yung Gravy - yup!
Big Sean ft. Nipsey Hussle - Deep Reverence: Big Sean dropped his “Detroit 2” project and it may be his most intimate yet. With interludes from Dave Chappelle, Erykah Badu, and Stevie Wonder you really got to know Sean. This Nipsey collab was released as the lead single and he had been deceased for over a year, so this had to be in the tuck. Unsurprisingly, it was a super duper dope verse and Sean did his thing on this track and all throughout “Detroit 2”.
Lil Yachty x YN Jay - Blind Em
Saba - Mrs. Whoever
The Avalanches ft. Denzel Curry, Sampa The Great & Tricky - Take Care In You Dreaming
Bino Rideaux ft. Young Thug - Mismatch (Remix): Bino has a unique voice and the production on this sounds like an early 2000’s R&B radio record (super dope btw). The Remix with Young Thug is a super slapper as both of their voices sound perfect on this production and they sound like brothers side by side.
A$AP Twelvy - S.N.L.
Vado ft. Dre & Dave East - Blessings
Comethazine - We Gone Win: “If it’s War then We Gone Win” Gotta admit, when I first heard this, I thought he said if it’s “water” We Gone Win, but I figured it out. The piano keys and happy chords are a stark contrast to the lyrics which describes shooting niggas in the head (that’s part of what makes the track so great). Cometh’s passionate, aggressive delivery adds pizazz and this is a perfect track for the gym or to hype you up before you spin the block on your opps.
Loose Kannon Takeoff ft. Stunna 4 Vegas - No Flaggin
