2020: The Hit List (Part 4 of 4)
October-Ish
Bfb Da Packman ft. Wiz Khalifa - Fun Time: “Hello!” I think this is the first time I heard the Detroit/Houston rapper Bfb Da Packman and he has become one of my favorite artists. It takes a certain fearlessness to say what he says. On top of that, for it to be coherent, to rhyme, to be sonically pleasing, BDP really found his own lane. And this is early on in the new Detroit movement so this Detroit-type beat was something to behold.
Shoreline Mafia - Hoe Shit
Internet Money ft. Don Toliver - Lemonade (Remix)
LB Spiffy ft. 2KBaby - Go Pro
Pacman Da Gunman ft. O.T. Genesis - Never Gon Change: 2 Rich Crips on an absolute banger. I’ve literally listened to this song everyday for the past 3 days (it came up in Shuffle and I’d never skip it). Beat hard. Bars hard. Super catchy and super real. The Marathon Continues.
Cam Wallace - Retail
Benny the Butcher ft. Lil Wayne & Big Sean - Timeless: “What’s a king to a God nigga?” I’ve listened to this shit everyday for the past 3 days too. This track, like its title, is Timeless. Benny gives sage advice “You won’t last in the streets long if your only hustle drug dealing”. Weezy out here watching TV with a bitty that wouldn’t watch a commercial with us. And Sean incorporates the famous “Footprints” Christian poem in his verse. Tough Tune.
Rucci ft. Shordie Shordie - Me & My Drugz, Pt. 2
Emotional Oranges with Channel Tres - All That: “What you gon do with all that?” One of the best beats of the year and EO & CT synergize to make this super catchy, super replayable bop. For all the geeks who are also freaks in the sheets, this one’s for you.
T.I. ft. 21 Savage - Thank God
Calboy - Gang Gang
NBA Youngboy - The Last Backyard…: This appeared on the Youngboy’s “Top” album that they said copied Roddy Ricch’s album cover but who knows who had the idea first. I don’t know. I know the album was fire. The Last Backyard is one of my favs because YB sings the hook and goes with super hard bars for the verses. It shows his range all in less than 3 minutes.
Spillage Village ft. Hollywood JB - Ea’alah (Family)
Young Dolph - To Be Honest
YG ft. Chris Brown & Tyga - Rodeo: This one samples one of my favorite tracks of all time 2pac & KCi & Jojo’s “How Do You Want It”. YG puts a lil gangsta twist on it and you know Brown & T Raw always put it down for the ladies.
Headie One - You/Me
21 Savage x Metro Boomin - Steppin On Niggas
Conway ft. Dej Loaf - Fear of God
DJ Chose ft. BeatKing - THICK
Benny the Butcher ft. Freddie Gibbs - One Way Flight: It’s wild to see where the relationship between these two gentlemen is today considering they dropped this A1 track less than 2 years ago…
Flipp Dinero ft. A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie - No No No
Freddie Gibbs & Big Sean - 4 Thangs
Joyner Lucas ft. The Game - On This Way
Ty Dolla $ign ft. Kehlani - Universe: “The Universe must want me to win, I’m happier than I’ve ever been” It feel like that sometimes right? Like The Universe is working overtime to make all your dreams come true. And even though you can’t see the big picture sometimes. You walk by faith knowing that it’ll all work out. This track appears on Ty Dolla’s “Featuring Ty Dolla Sign” album which has quite a few bops.
Dej Loaf ft. Benny The Butcher & Conway The Machine - Get Money: “I hang with Lions, Tiger Bears” Favor for a favor. After Dej appeared on Conway’s track “Fear of God”, The Machine returns the favor and brings the Butcher with him.
November-Ish
Lil Tracy ft. marvy ayy - Jousting
NLE Choppa - Bryson
88GLAM - East to West
Shordie Shordie & Murda Beatz - Good Evening
Tobe Nwigwe ft. Olu (of EARTHGANG) & DCKWRTH - Wildlings
SAINt JHN ft. Lil Uzi Vert - High School Reunion, Prom
DJ Money & Wale - Lions, Bengals & Bears
Rah Swish & Dreamdoll - Watchu Like
Kodak Black - Feeling Myself Today
Bootsy Collins ft. Ellis Hall - Wishing Well: Bootsy is a legend! And he dropped a new album in 2020 with a Snoop feature so I had to give it a listen. The project is dope and my favorite track was this optimistic song with Ellis Hall. Keep praying, keep going, throw a little coin in the Wishing Well.
Cyhi The Prynce ft. Canjelae - Ryder
DaBaby - More Money More Problems: So “My Brother’s Keeper (Long Live G)” is DaBaby’s best project imo. And I’ve heard other music media personalities say they loved it too. It was straight from the heart after his brother died by suicide. It’s not a long project but each track hits. This one is the most commercial of the tracks but it fits the theme of the project and has some of DB’s best rapping ever.
Your Old Droog ft. Mach-Hommy - Pravda
2 Chainz ft. NBA Youngboy - Save Me
Fetty Wap - Speed
Future & Lil Uzi Vert - Drankin & Smokin: When you consider that he also had this Top 10 selling Hip-Hop album with Future, Lil Uzi might’ve been the best selling Hip-Hop artist of 2020. His Rockstar status was certified. Future been a megastar with Platinum plaques to prove it. I loved this whole Pluto x Baby Pluto album and Drankin & Smokin is the track I have on repeat to this date.
Yxng Bane ft. D Block Europe - Cut Me Off
Kembe X ft. Ab-Soul & ICECOLDBISHOP - Back At It
DJ Luke Nasty - Rain: This flip of Kirk Franklin’s “Melodies from Heaven” set the world on fire because of its secular nature. Instead of the Lord raining down blessings, Luke Nasty made it rain on them pros (professional dancers).
Tierra Whack - Peppers And Onions
K Camp ft. Sevyn Streeter - Smart Water: If this ain’t on your Nighttime Playlist, it ought to be. Classic R&B duet about that wet wet.
Meek Mill ft. Lil Durk - Pain Away
Kevin Gates & Dermot Kennedy - Power: One of Gate’s biggest hits. If I remember correctly this was just a Dermot Kennedy track and Kev’s version was a remix but then it started bubbling so this became the official version. (I just checked and Dermot’s “Power Over Me" came out in 2018 so Kev’s version was a sample/flip of the original but also it seemed like Gates was just doing a throwaway and it blew the fuck up)
Jeezy ft. Demi Lovato & Lil Duval - My Reputation
French Montana ft LGP Qua - Straight For The Bag: French Dropped “CB5” in 2020 (Wikipedia says it’s his 22nd mixtape, God Damn!) One of the standouts is “Straight For The Bag” with LGP Qua who handles all the verses while French delivers the hook. The beat is triumphant with the horns and Qua’s aggressive flow makes this one of my favorites in the gym.
December-Ish
Lil Yachty - Coffin: I feel like this came out as a snippet first then he dropped the whole track and it became an underground hit. Didn’t get the mass radio play but was on in the clubs. The craziest video of Yachty came out this year of him coming out to a festival to this song and the crowd going absolutely nuts.
Stunna 4 Vegas ft. Toosii & Murda Beatz - Murda
Drakeo the Ruler ft. Ralfy The Plug & Ketchy the Great - Big Dogg: Drakeo beat a murder charge (twice) and this was on the first album he dropped upon his release, “We Know The Truth”. Whole album got slappers and one of my favs is “Big Dogg” with his brother Ralfy and fellow Stinc Team member Ketchy. Long Live The Ruler!
Lil Tjay - None of Your Love
Lil Baby - Errbody
Run The Jewels - goonies vs. E.T.
Erick Arc Elliot ft. Farr & Loyle Carner - Let It Go
SAFE - Orange Freestyle
Trey Lewis - Dicked Down In Dallas: Viral country hit about a man who is heartbroken after he finds that his lady is getting Dicked Down in the Big D (probably by a big D or one bigger than Trey’s).
Slimelife Shawty ft. 42 Dugg - Clappers
Trev Rich - Lie A Lot
Jack Harlow ft. Static Major & Bryson Tiller - Luv is Dro: Off of Jack’s debut album “Thats What They All Say” which has quite a few tracks I still play to this day. It samples “If U Scared, Say U Scared” by Smoke E. Digglera (which Drizzy also sampled on “Look What You’ve Done” on Take Care)
Shordie Shordie & Murda Beatz - Doctors: DMV artist Shordie Shordie and producer Murda Beatz dropped a collab project called “Memory Lane” this was one of the lead up singles and it’s a hit. I love when the street niggas sing about their thuggery. Harmonizing that you gonna send the opps to the Doctors makes for a Top Tier Tune.
CHIKA - FWB
Kid Cudi - Another Day
Kamaiyah - Go Crazy
EARTHGANG ft. Ashia Karana - Tears of Joy: An emotional, celebratory track by the Dreamville duo with an assist by Ashia Karana. One of my favorite bars of this year is on this track “tryna get your daughter to open her throat Chakras” (Bars!)
Ye Ali - Backrubs
Sheff G - Proud of Me Now: Sheff G is one of my favorite young artists. Even though he’s currently incarcerated, he and his team have found a way to continue dropping music. This track was released on a mixtape of the same name before he got locked up and around this time is when I discovered him and went back and listened to his whole catalog. The draw for me is not only his unique voice, quality beats (many produced by Great John) but his wise-beyond-his-years subject matter, often introspective and talking about the real life pain of the streets and how shit changes once you get a little bread.
Beyoncé - BIGGER: Beyonce voiced Nala in Disney’s live-action remake of “The Lion King” and it only made sense to save paper and just pay Queen Bey extra to do the whole soundtrack (which was a movie itself – a visual album to be exact). It features African artists and sounds from the motherlands. The themes were part of African culture like this song, reminding us that we’re a part of something way BIGGER.
Playboy Carti - Vamp Anthem
38 Spesh ft. Benny The Butcher - Stash Box
BRS Kash - Throat Baby: Smash hit by BRS Kash. Every so often a song comes along that is slightly comical, has shock value, sex appeal, and is live & direct. A good example of this back in the day was Juvenile's “Back Dat Ass Azz Up”. In 2020 we got “Throat Baby.”
Vedo ft. Young Dolph & Money Man - You Got It (Remix)
Rubi Rose ft. Future - Whole Lotta Liquor
Lil Durk - Refugee
