Best Mother's Day Songs of All-Time: A Non-Debatable List (GFYS)
Intro Blurb: Mom. The 1st person we see when we touch down on Earth. Who feeds us, loves us, and has our back despite our shortcomings. Often our fiercest defender and our example of unconditional love. A mother's love is like no other, and this list is a dedication of tracks that celebrate our queens. Cheers!
10. LL Cool J - Mama Said Knock You Out: "Don't call it a comeback!" For all those suck mother lovers who think shit sweet. Mr. Smith's grandmama ain't raise no fool. And although LL is known for being a ladies man, he came correct with this certified smash.
9. Big Boi ft. Kelly Rowland - Mama Told Me: My mama told me to always wear rubbers and love the Lord and on this the Outkast alumnus and Destiny's Child singer let us know what they matriarchs told them. Big Boi mama told him to take his time, stay positive and stay with some fresh J's. Kelly kills the hook "Be careful how, you play your cards (That's mama told me), Be true to self and you’ll go far (That's what mama told me), Try not to break too many hearts (That's what mama told me), I always knew I’d be a star (That’s what mama told me)"
8. Tobi Lou - Like My Mom: The Nigerian-born, Chicago-raised artist crafted this track dedicated to the woman he most admires and it's a vibe! "I'm the man like my mom" is one of my favorite lines from this list. Our mom's really be holding it down (SPICE THIS UP WHODI)
7. Mir Fontane - On Mommy: The Jersey-native just wanna ball like Kyrie, but psyy niggas be trying him. That's why he keep the heater on him, just in case he gotta catch a body, and that's On Mommy. "Put in work, I don't wanna be another body in the dirt, Seen too many mama's ride in back of the hearse."
6. Juvenile - Mamma Got Ass: Most people know this song as "She get it from her mama" Juvie lists all the things this one Magnolia shawty he knew from way back got from ma dukes. Including her eyes, her thighs, her walk, her talk, her class and of course... Dat ass! It's always refreshing to see that your girl's mom aged gracefully. Gives you hope for y'all future.
5. Mos Def - Umi Says: The artist currently known as Yasiin Bey, this dropped jazzy, funky bop back in 1999. If ya don't know, Umi is the Arabic word for "mother." And Mos Def's Umi says "Shine your light on the world. Shine your light for the world to see" Like Mos says on the track, tomorrow ain't promised so this little lite of mine (yours), let it, let it shine while you can. (Note: He also mentions his Abi in the the hook, Arabic for "father" but he he named the song "Umi Says" so we rollin with this as a Mama Song.)
4. (TIE) Drake - Look What You've Done: From The Boy's classic album "Take Care" the Toronto Honcho made this ode to his mama, his oncle (mam's bro) and grandmama over soulful keys. He gets in his storytelling bag and describes the arguments he has with his mom, them making up and his ascent to stardom which allowed him to pay for things he couldn't before.
4. (TIE) Lil Uzi Vert - Dark Queen: Philly's Phinest had this Tough Tune on 2017's Luv is Rage 2. Uzi talks about his mama's fear of seeing him locked up, his diamonds (which are in fact rocked up) and he promises his mama he will wash up because as we know cleanliness is next to godliness. "When I was small, mama made me tall, Even though I'm daddy's pup she still gone wipe my paws, Don't care about this money, don't care about them cars, Lose my mama that's a problem you can't solve"
3. Boyz II Men - A Song for Mama: Philly going Back 2 Back on this list! (No shade Meek). This song was the theme for the 1997 film "Soul Food" From the moment the piano comes in you know this is gonna be one of them ones. You put Boyz II Men, some keys and a heartfelt subject like the end of the road or saying goodbye to yesterday and you know it's gonna be classic. This slow, soulful jam is dedicated to the woman who taught us everything and is the driving force in our lives. The woman who taught us wrong from right and lectured us when we was being bad. The woman who sat down with the Superintendent to make sure you didn't get put in Special Ed or expelled. (Just me?)
2. Tupac - Dear Mama: This could be the most iconic song on the list. Pac's ode to Afeni is known by many. "And even as a crack fiend mama, ya always was a Black Queen mama" Part of what made Pac so legendary was his ability to paint a three dimensional portrait of the Black experience in America's ghettos in the early 90's. Pac's mom was actually pregnant with him and was incarcerated, afraid she would have to birth this child in custody. But she was acquitted just days before he was born (she tells this story in the video.) Pac's mom loved him despite the constant trouble he got himself into and he loved her through her drug addiction. "There's no way I could pay ya back, but the plan is to show you that I understand, You are appreciated"
1. Kanye West - Hey Mama: Appearing on his sophomore album "Late Registration" Hey Mama was dedicated to Dr. Donda West who would tragically pass away a few later. Yeezy takes us down memory lane as he moved to the Chi, tells us about his mama grinded to keep on the lights and how he had to console her when fuckboys did her greasy. He praises her for being "unbreakable, unmistakable, highly capable, lady that's making loot" He harps on the fact that his mom supported him when he dropped out of college to pursue a career in music. Now that he's glown up, he promises her the world homes, cars but more importantly, all the love he can give. "It don't gotta be Mother's Day or your birthday, for me to call and say (Hey Mama)"
10. LL Cool J - Mama Said Knock You Out: "Don't call it a comeback!" For all those suck mother lovers who think shit sweet. Mr. Smith's grandmama ain't raise no fool. And although LL is known for being a ladies man, he came correct with this certified smash.
