The Hit List #10: (June 28 - July 4) [2021]
G Herbo ft. Polo G & Lil Tjay - Cry No More: The rapper formerly known as Lil Herb has had a hell of a year. In addition to welcoming a new son and dodging smoke from them boys, he was able to chef up an album that was released this week called simply “25”. I’m guessing that’s his age… Anyways, on this standout, Herb goes in with the Pop Out Boyz: Polo G & Lil Tjay. The exasperated young men don’t want to cry over all the death in their lives. Their homies dying, retaliation and 12 interfering. With all the loss, they just want peace. Check out these other tracks from “25”:
I Don’t Wanna Die
Stand The Rain
T.O.P (ft. 21 Savage)
No Jail Time
Cold World (ft. Yosohn)
Drill (ft. Rowdy Rebel)
Doughboy
Statement
Brent Faiyaz ft. Drake - Wasting Time: “If you gonna waste your time, then waste your time with me” Brent encourages shorty to be with him in a dead end relationship because at least he has something to offer unlike the fella she kicking it with currently. Brent has been making waves for a while now with his own spin on Sad Boy Music. I remember first hearing him on a song called “No One Knows” back in like ‘16. He was also on the smash single "Crew" with Goldlink & Shy Glizzy. This song, produced by the Neptunes, and featuring the 6 God himself, is right in his wheelhouse. Drake delivers another outstanding verse adding to the Infinity Stones he’s been collecting in 2021. He also advises flushing of the condom (and watching it go bye bye) so you don’t find shorty laid out on your master bathroom floor with the turkey baster trying to get you for 18 years.
BigWalkDog ft. Lil Baby & Pooh Shiesty - Whole Lotta Ice: Gucci Mane’s newest artist is continuing a crazy run for The New 1017. First Pooh Shiesty blew, then Gucci dropped “Ice Daddy”, looks like BWD up next. This is an ode to them almighty diamonds and these gentlemen have plenty. They hustle hard and spend their money on Cartier’s, Richard Millie’s and more. “Hold up your wrist, Hold it like this” and also Free Pooh Shiesty.
Mist ft. Burna Boy - Rollin’: Sample one of my favorite songs and you got me. This song samples Donnell Jones’ hit “U Know What’s Up”. Over a dancehall beat, these guys deliver a summer anthem for you to chug rum to while ya girl dutty wines in the middle of your neighborhood night club.
Nas x Freddie Gibbs x Cordae - Life is Like a Dice Game: Banner week for Nas. He released a 25 anniversary edition of his 2nd album "It Was Written" with bonus content. He also dropped this track with fellow Grammy-nominated rappers Gangsta Gibbs and (formerly YBN) Cordae. This track is a Spotify exclusive. Nas recorded it in the 90’s but it went unreleased, until now. Over Hit-Boy production, the guys wake up and think about what to do with their day while also thinking of a master plan because their lifestyle is hard to maintain and a lot of it’s up to chance (like a dice game) so they must move strategically.
Common ft. PJ - Imagine: Soulful tune that flips Rene & Angela’s “Imaginary Playmates". Common, who belongs on Chicago’s Rap Mt. Rushmore, raps a message of hope, motivating us to Imagine a paradise and encouraging us to strive for that Utopia. PJ, a singer who I’ve admired for years, and whose song “I Mean It” is one of my faves of this millennium, sings the hook and adds to the upbeat feel of the song. She’s the glaze on this doughnut. Tough Tune.
IDK ft. Young Thug - Pradadabang: IDK been loading up the clip and he bout to bust next week with his new album "USEE4YOURSELF" dropping next week. I was fucking with this nigga back when he was Jay IDK (just sayin.) He already dropped the A1 track “Shoot My Shot” with Offset and now he doubled back with Thugger on this one. IDK asks “How you gon’ want Birkins and shit, when you don’t even got a house?” He don’t mess with gold-digging, clout-chasing women and he ain’t messing with no broke bitties either. Shorty said she need a Prada to bang (that’s where the title comes from). Like most ballers IDK & Slime don’t mind breaking bread but they just want a lil reciprocation, appreciation and a limited amount of expectations.
Fenix Flexin ft. Bravo the Bagchaser - True 2 This: One half of Shoreline Mafia dropped a new mixtape this week “Fenix Flexin Vol. 1” and it’s a motherfucking delight! On this one, Fenix enlists Bravo the Bagchaser and they warn the opps that they are heavily armed and precise with their aim. They’ve also been stacking lots of paper which they use to buy a few pieces of jewelry to flex on aforementioned opps and attract the finer sex. Some other Tough Tunes from “Fenix Flexin Vol. 1”:
Risky
Lightshow
For Me
Wockiana
On Fig (feat. SaysoTheMac)
Pain
RIP Mac P Dawg
Big Boi & Sleepy Brown ft. Killer Mike - lowercase (no cap): Dungeon Family business on this slap. They gon be shaking ass in Magic City to this one. Uptempo, with A+ verses from Daddy Fat Sax and Mike Render. Sleepy Brown funkily delivers the hook. Check it out.
Russ - On The Way: He fuckin’ did it again. When I see the weekly Russ drop I click play thinking, “It’s no way I’ll like this one too” and the dude just keeps delivering. This my bag too, that motivational, aspirational, get up off ya ass and get money music. “Running and running, toward what I’m becoming, on the way, on the way, on the way”. Russ been speaking things into existence, ignoring the haters, chin checking the opps and continues to vibrate at a high frequency. “Automatic win when the passion mixed with the action”
Yungeen Ace (ft. King Von) - Hardaway: The Florida artist, who went viral for his re-rock of Vanessa Carlton’s record “1000 Miles” into “Who I Smoke” with a dope video on a golf course, Yungeen Ace, has taken 2021 by storm. Seizing the moment, he dropped an album this week “Life of Betrayal 2x” his debut album and the sequel to 2018 mixtape “Life of Betrayal”. This one features the late great Chicago rapper King Von and it’s a thug love song. Von tells his shawty that he can’t trust her because he doesn’t trust anyone. He insists on using a condom (even though at the end of the track he shoots the club up) and he stays with the stick on him because opps be trying to violate. Ace lets his lady know that he’s addicted to her sugar walls, so he trying to slide through real quick so he could slide in then slide out. Other standouts from “Life of Betrayal 2x”:
Who I Smoke (ft. Whoppa Wit Da Choppa, Spinabenz & FastMoney Goon)
Dior
Opp Boyz
Gun Em Down
Adopted Child
Ain’t Been the Same
Deserve It (ft. YFN Lucci)
YNW Melly ft. Queen Naija - Pieces: I’m not the biggest fan of heartbreak music. Not one to wallow in misery, but occasionally I hear something I like. This one of them ones. The bouncy beat gives it an optimistic spin. Melly croons about getting his heart broken and asks God to send him an angel for some healing (maybe the kind Marvin Gaye was talkin bout…) Queen Naija handles the other prospective, being fed up with a joker and having to let go. That shit hurts too.
NorthsideBenji & DJ Charlie B - 30,000 ft: Melodic, grind anthem. NorthsideBenji up early trying to get his cake up on the way to the millions. Now he 30,000 ft up in the sky on a PJ, dripping in ice on his way to get the next bag. He keep bread so he carry the toaster and the only thing he fear is Allah and the feds.
Chevy Woods ft. Ty Dolla $ign - TXT ME (Remix): TGOD! I didn’t know Chevy Woods made love songs, but here we are. Woods dedicates this one to his main damie. He assures her that he’s put his other bitties to the side. He’s gonna keep all her secrets so she can comfortably remove her Vickie Secrets and get a cardio sesh in with the boy. By cardio sesh, I'm talking bout making sweet love by the fire. And who better to collab on a piano-laced ballad than Tyrone Dollar Signs himself. Ty started singing and my girl started dripping so much the damn couch cushion got wet. I looked her and said, “You don’t never get that wet for me”. She shot me a piercing glare then said “I fucking hate you nigga, and as soon as I get my credit right and figure out a way to get back to LA, I’m leaving your mark ass!” We’re in love obvi.
Fat Joe x Remy Ma x Cool & Dre - Back Outside: Jose Gordo cheffed up another one! After flipping a Luther classic he comes back with an ode to the world opening up. With frequent collaborators Remy Ma and Cool & Dre, it’s a family affair. With a sample of Frankie Beverly & Maze’s “Before I Let Go”, Terror Squad has a club smash on deck just in time for the heart of summer.
