The Hit List week 101: (March 27 - April 2)
DJ Drama & Lil Uzi Vert ft. 42 Dugg - Free Game: After a Grammy-winning year with Tyler’s “CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST” Drama has found a second wind and has been dropping consistently for months. Most of these have been Gangsta Grillz tapes with other artists but this week he dropped his “solo” project “I’m Really Like That” and the album proves the title to be 100 percent true. It’s packed with A list features including frequent collaborators like Jeezy and new superstars like Benny. My favorite track is easily this 42 Dugg & Uzi track “Free Game”. Beside the beat being insane, 42 Dugg killed his verse and this could be the best Uzi Rap verse I’ve ever heard. Do yourself a favor and check out “I’m Really Like That”.
2Rare - Rare Steppa: Philly’s 2Rare has been on fire. Doing everything from Sampling R&B Hits to creating original bops, usually over the Philly Bounce/Jersey Club sound that Uzi resurrected with “I Wanna Rock”. Rare Steppa is a 2Rare trying something different as the beat doesn’t have that Philly Bounce sound but it’s still super lit. This one samples Joe’s classic “All The Things (Your Man Won’t Do)” and I’ve had it on repeat ever since it dropped.
Tyler The Creator ft. Vince Staples - STUNTMAN: So Tyler dropped the deluxe to his aforementioned Grammy-winning album, this version called “CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST: The Estate Sale” Longer than a traditional deluxe, it consists of tracks that didn’t make the album. The standout is this Vince Staples collab that reminds of the track he had on GTA V “Garbage”. It has major Neptunes vibes. He and Vince use the track to stunt and show us how to stunt.
Gucci Mane ft. DaBaby & 21 Savage - 06 Gucci: Gucci’s longevity is impressive. Having a hall of fame career before his prison bid, to coming out a changed man, becoming an exec with a great eye for talent, his Verzuz with Jeezy, all while getting married, having 2 more children and dropping some of the best music of his career. He’s back at it again, this time with ATL’s heir to the throne (and Grammy Winner) 21 Savage, and the man who fell down but keeps getting back up, DaBaby. Beat slaps as DB handles the hook and 1st verse and bigs up Gucci (while donning a Braves jersey in the video, Gucci comes in 2nd and talks his shit, 21 closes it out giving Gucci his flowers with some exquisite bars.
ShooterGang Kony ft. Daboii & Lil Bean - Better Run: Cali’s ShooterGang Kony dropped a new project this week called “Church Ain’t Safe”. Shit was so good, I had to buy it immediately. I’ve had “Better Run” on super-repeat. SOBxRBE’s DaBoii and one of my favorites from the Bay, Lil Bean, really sauce this one up. Also, this is one of the dopest tracks I’ve heard where there are 3 artists on the hook. Check out “Church Ain’t Safe” and these highlights:
YNR
Spill a Nigga Lean
Morray & Lil Tjay - High Price: Dreamville Fest was this week and it was a great opportunity for NC artist Morray to drop a new track. Morray sums up the core message of the song on the hook: “They say love don’t cost a thing and that’s lies, it cost time that you can’t get back High Price, Gave it ya all now you got none left, nice try, everything happens for a reason, that’s life.” #BARS
Cash Kidd - You Remind Me: Along with ShooterGang Kony, Cash Kidd’s “BeBe Kidd 3” is tied for my favorite project to drop this week. Cash Kidd really shined on “3rd Quarter” a track from ALLBLACK’s most recent album. When I first heard him rap on this 26 track monster, I knew it was special. “You Remind Me” is a flip of Usher’s track of the same name and he uses it to reminisce about one of his favorite eaters and an opp who he had to bop. It’s that bouncy West Coast sound all throughout the project. Any fan of the new Bay Area sound will love this one. Other standouts from “BeBe Kidd 3”:
Socks in AZ
Out The Way
Curren$y & Jermaine Dupri ft. T.I. - Never Fall Off: Surprising chemistry from these 2 gents who have a collab album dropping soon called “For Motivational Use Only”. They got a verse from TIP on this new single and he really showed why he’s one of the best to ever pick up a mic. The beat is A1 as the guys pray to the Lord that they Never Fall Off. They pray for the same for their dogs and vow to never beef over no broads.
38 Spesh - Crowned King: 38 Spesh dropped a new project this week called “Gunsmoke”. My favorite track is the closing track “Crowned King” which shares the same beat as Meek Mill’s “Early Mornings” from last year. 38 Spesh knows to be Crowned King he’s gotta put the work in and put his all in. He’s confident that no matter where on Earth you put him, he’s gonna go and get it. Motivation Music.
Rod Wave - Fight The Feeling: The Big Boy’s back with some melodic heat for your headtop. Piano keys set the mood as Rod sings to a certain woman. He came a long way with a whole lot of scars. He finally found a brighter day from being in the dark and he knows how shawty’s feeling. Her heart is broken but she tries to smile through it all. She put on something nice and went to the club and she’s in the middle of the dance floor trying not to cry to a love song. She’s trying to Fight The Feeling but Rod urges her to let it all out.
Juicy J - Pay Attention: Memphis’ Juicy J dropped a new album this week called “Mental Trillness”. My favorite track “Pay Attention” has a classic Memphis beat and finds Juicy encouraging us to stay on our toes. Opps will try to catch you off your note but you’ll always persevere if you Pay Attention,
Marshmello, Polo G & Southside - Grown Man: I’ve had this one on repeat all week too. Super DJ Marshmello and Superproducer Southside teamed up with Polo G to drop this new bouncy track. Polo raps about his favorite things, bad bitties, designer drip, ice, and Glocks with beams. He’s on a mission to get more bands because he’s a Grown Man.
Slayter - Prostitute Flange: Puerto Rican-Born, NY-Raised spitter, Slayter dropped a new project this week called “Block Baby”. Dope project. My favorite track is this flip of the Lil Wayne classic track of the same name.
Quavo - Honey Bun: Quay dropped a new bop and even interpolated Drake & 21 Savage’s viral hit “Rich Flex”. He asks his Tommy Gun to do something for him. He’s hiding his emotions and he promises to slide whenever necessary.
CEO Trayle - Meant 4 You: CEO Trayle dropped a new project this week called “The Collection Vol. 2”. My favorite track is “Meant 4 You”. On this track he promises to give his shawty unconditional love and medicinal drugs. He also promises the opps that when he wets up they block, the bullets he sends are meant for them. His aim is impeccable and he fires the yopper with expert precision.
Luh Tyler ft. NoCap - Weeks: Luh Tyler had a banner week. After announcing he’s signed with Atlantic, he dropped his debut project called “My Vision” (it looks like a Deluxe dropped the same day too…) Dope project, I really loved the track “Santa” with Loe Shimmy. This collab with NoCap is really a certified bop too.
Kenzo Balla & FaZe Kaysan - Kan’t Lack: FaZe Kaysan is a producer that is also a member of the infamous gamer clan. He’s produced a few tracks over the past couple years and every track I’ve heard has been super dope. This week he got vocals from the BX’s own Kenzo Balla. It’s a NY Drill track with a unique angelic loop in the back that balances the hard beat with an airy vibe. KB’s bars are super hard, riding dirty, spinning the block, dumping the clip (drill shit ju heard?). The beat has some lit transitions that really sauce it up.
Larry June, The Alchemist & Wiz Khalifa - What Happened To The World?: After dropping quite a few singles Larry & Al dropped their collab album “The Great Escape” this week. These two are a match made in heaven (pause, unpause). Larry’s playa rap style and Al's smooth production. My favorite track is their track with Wiz. Sounds like it could be on the soundtrack of a movie from the 70’s. They talk that rich nigga shit, big cribs, first class flights, closing deals, and making millions. At the end of the day, they sit back, smoke one and ponder about things like, What Happened To The World?
Dizzy Wright - Make It Make Sense: Dizzy Wright dropped a new project this week called “Live At Daddy Macs”. Dope project, my favorite track is “Get Out My Business” with Problem and JasonMartin that dropped a few weeks ago. My favorite album cut is “Make It Make Sense”. It has funky West Coast vibes. Dizzy recommends that you have love in your heart if you wanna truly enjoy this track.
A$AP Ant & Boldly James - Red Dolphin: A$AP dropped a new album this week called “The PostLude” which is like an interlude but after (or after taking a Qualude). I really loved the Boldy James collab “Red Dolphin”. The horns add a triumphant vibe to the wavy beat. Ant said he fastin for Ramadaan and Boldy said he’ll have the laser on his Glock shine on your forehead like the skid mark of Buddha (nice How High reference).
Huey Briss - Gloccs & Work: Briss don’t miss! He dropped a new album this week called “Flowers Before the Grave”. Dope project, and “Gloccs & Work” is my favorite track. The high-hat loop gives it a jazzy feel. And the title tells you all you need to know. HB is handy with the steel if you know what I mean. And everyday he wakes up and puts in that work. All his homies do too.
Davido ft. Morravey - IN THE GARDEN: African superstar Davido dropped a new album this week called “Timeless”. Super dope project, Afrobeats vibes throughout. My favorite track is this collab with singer Morravey “IN THE GARDEN”. It samples that one song (you’ll know when you hear it). Morravey sings to her bae. She’s never met anyone like him and she has many options, but he’s the one she wants. She wants him to hold her hand as they walk In The Garden. Davido tells his boo to call him when she needs some love. He’s down to rock with her, all night. They can even do it In The Garden. Anytime, any place, he’s with it.
Chlöe & Future - Cheatback: Chlöe dropped a solo project this week. She’s really evolved over the last 2 years, including acting (and slaying in her role). Her new album “In Pieces” is dope, full of radio-ready slaps. And she got the Toxic King, Future, for this Toxic Anthem. Cheatback finds Chloe getting even. Her man cheated so guess what she’s gonna do? Cheatback! And Future, I don’t think he could ever cheat, ladies gotta know what they gettin into. I don’t think there’s anyone else faithfully unfaithful (respectfully).
Royce Da 5’9” - Signs (Freestyle): Royce dropped a new EP this week called “The Heaven Experience”, a 6 Pack of bangers. I loved the Redman collab “Royce & Reggie” but I’ve had the opening track “Signs (Freestyle)” on repeat. The beat is A1 and the message is amazing. Follow your gut, get new money, cut the dead weight (old friends that don’t bring anything to the table). This the anthem for everybody that’s grinding to be their maximum self. Royce’s advice: Don’t slow up.
BigWalkDog - No Degrees: Big Walk Dog just dropped the 3rd version (and 2nd or 3rd Deluxe) of his debut album, this version called “Trick City: Deluxe” (the last one was “Trick City: Extended”) It includes the 38 tracks on the previous Deluxe plus 6 new tracks. My favorite of the new batch is “No Degrees”. It has a New Orleans bounce beat, and he spits a fire bar “If a man don’t work, A man don’t eat”. He talks about trappin and getting bread of course. He never pops out without his pistol. He references New Orleans classics “Slow Motion” and “500 Degrees” which explains the title and the beat.
