The Hit List week 105: (April 24 - April 30)
Jack Harlow - Is That Ight?: I woke up Friday morning and saw the internet was in a tizzy about a new Jack Harlow album “Jackman.” There was no rollout for this one, no singles, and everyone was pleasantly surprised by the final product. The beats are A1, I don’t know if we’ve heard Jack on hella soul-sampled beats like this. He touches on everything from people crediting his success to him being White, tol old friends who did some foul things. It was personal, it was real, I loved it. My favorite track is “Is That Ight?” which is a basically a Get Off My Dick anthem. Go listen to the whole project front to back, no skips.
Lil Baby - Go Hard: According to the internet, this track is a few years old and leaked previously. It got an official drop this week and it has the sound of the tracks that made LB a Superstar. He’s not into losing so he’s back to going hard again. He’s going as hard as he can to win (and he’s most certainly winning if you ask me).
Tee Grizzley & Skilla Baby - B-Legit: After 2 tracks together a project was inevitable and it came this week with the collab album “Controversy”. Dope project, my favorite track is easily “B-Legit” which samples the Luniz smash hit “I Got 5 On It” and finds Tee and Skilla talking that rich nigga talk. Millions of dollars, exotic cars, jewelry, and all these things keep the birds flocking. At the end of the day, their only focus is that mula baby.
2Rare - Toxic Ish: Philly’s 2rare has made a name for himself by churning out radio-ready Philly Bounce bops (like Jersey Club but more like Uzi’s “I Just Wanna Rock”). His other signature is sampling 90’s classics, and he did it again on this one when he sampled Guy’s hit “I Like”. This one doesn’t have that Philly Bounce/Jersey Club sound (although there is a break where it does hit that pocket). If you like “I Like” you’ll like 2Rare’s flip.
Dave East ft. Katt Rockell - Feel Like: Dave East dropped a deluxe to “Book of David” his Gangsta Grillz with DJ Drama and producers Buda & Grandz (although the Deluxe was sans Dram). I don't have high expectations for Deluxes because they’re usually throwaways but this one was fire. I’ve had “DND” on repeat and I also love “Feel Like” with Katt Cantrell. Dave spits some real shit. How niggas switch up while he already gotta watch his back for the opps and cops. From his roof he tries to keep a birds eye view of it all, and when he’s on the streets he keeps a poker face. He moved to Jersey to get out the way but he still gotta go to the jungle to run the numbers up. Katt Cantrell’s angelic vocals provide support in the background and the track’s outro. East speaks about meeting his queen and he imagines it Feel Like Nipsey when he got with Lauren. Check out “Book of David” (Deluxe) and these highlights:
Never Happened (ft. Derrick Milano)
DND
Rich The Kid ft. Fivio Foreign & Jay Critch - Still Movin’: Rich the Kid dropped a loosie this week with two NY steppers and it’s all about how they got hella motion. It samples that old song (you’ll know when you hear it). Drill elements too of course, which fit Fivi like a glove. They caked up, Glocked up, and they keep a few freaks around for stress relief.
Rowdy Rebel & Fetty Luciano - Shake: I heard that these 2 are real life brothers (unverified) but they dropped a project this week called “Splash Brothers”. Obviously, it’s got some Drill Anthems on there but they played around with the Jersey Club/Philly Bounce sound on a couple tracks. One of them was my favorite track on the album “Shake” which has heavy bass and has the guys asking the ladies to shake some ass while they throw some cash.
Conway & Jae Skeese - The Chosen: The two barsmiths (and frequent collaborators) dropped a new loosie this week and it’s heat. Produced by Justice League, it has a triumphant feel with the horns. Conway got it out the streets and he survived and now he pushing the black & yellow Maybach enjoying the fruits of his labor. Skeese knows these other cats can’t fuck wit him, and him and Conway is like Michael Thomas and Brees. He puts in that work in the gym and they both put the city on their back.
BigXThaPlug - Whip It: BigXThaPlug dropped the deluxe to his most recent album “Amar” and the stand out track is “Whip It” which samples the 70’s classic track by Dazz Band, “Let It Whip”. We all know that when BXTP is whipping, it’s that work or a fly ride (and maybe his bad ass kids, not too sure about this one). You gotta check this one out, I’ve had it on repeat since it dropped.
Snoop Dogg & Gary Vee - Please Take A Step Back: Snoop dropped a loosie with motivational speaker and entrepreneur Gary Vee and this one will put a battery in your back. It features Snoop rapping with part of a Gary Vee motivational speech interpolated. The message? When things get rough, never give up. Take a step back and realize all the things you actually have going for you, utilize those strengths, and keep moving forward.
Lil Bean ft. Lil Pete - WYW: One of my favorite artists, Lil Bean, dropped a new EP this week called “Piano Party”. Bean spits real shit and his beats are always top tier. My favorite track on the EP is this collab with Lil Pete “WYW” (short for What You Want). This one samples Avant’s hit “Read Your Mind” and Bean asks his shawty to tell him what she wants because he can’t read minds. Ever since he blew up everybody claims to be his cousin. Pete in the city tryna score and he upgrades his chick’s lifestyle. He tryna hit the crib with her and go crazy.
Thundercat & Tame Impala - No More Lies: These two multi-hyphenates dropped a new track this week called “No More Lies”. It has a funky sound laced with bass strings and live drums. Thundercat lets his main damie know that he wants No More Lies. Love is a two way street and he’s asking her to be honest and he’ll do the same. Tame Imp is cool with being on his own unless his main ting wants to come back. But if/when she does come back, no lies must be detected henceforth.
R-Mean & Scott Storch - The Rising Son: The greatest Armenian rapper of all time dropped a fire collab project with Scott Storch this week called “MEAN”. He got A-list features including Nas, YG, Quavo, Offset, Jeremih, French Montana and more. The Quavo track “Yessir” is a slap and my favorite track is “The Rising Son”. The production on this one is cinematic and interpolates Biggie and AZ. He talks about being in alignment with God and leading the pack. He learned to move in a room full of pythons and now he’s in a room full of icons (literally). He’s destined to live the dream for all his peeps who never made (like AZ on “Life’s a Bitch”). Check out “MEAN” and these standouts:
Candle of the Devil (with Nas)
Charles Barkley (ft. YG)
Yessir (with Quavo)
Overnight
iShowSpeed & Kai Cenat - Dogs: These 2 streaming megastars dropped a collab track that samples The Baha Men’s smash hit “Who Let the Dogs Out”. Speed went viral recently when a woman was trying to be real with him and he barked at her so she bounced and this track seems like a tip of the cap to that moment. The beat has heavy bass and the guys talk shit to the little pups (they’re both big dogs). They got all the rizz and it’s too easy when they doing this shit.
Allstar JR - Faster: Allstar JR dropped the Deluxe to his most recent album “Organized Crime 2”. My favorite of the Deluxe tracks is “Faster” where JR whips the work up Faster than he did before. The beat has that New West Coast sound with a Jazzy twist (it’s the sax). He’s riding around town serving the baseheads and then he heads back home to whip up some more.
Summrs - Munchkin: Summrs dropped his 2nd album of the year this week with “GHOST”. Dope project, full of those wavy, emo-rap tracks that are his specialty. My favorite track is “Munchkin” which according to YT leaked previously or a snippet was out (that’s how you know it’s gas). Produced by ChaseTheMoney it sounds like it could be an epic video game track (like Zelda). Super catchy, Summrs tell his bae he’s gonna be late but he promises to take her out for the finest cuts of steaks. When he sees the crowd going crazy at his shows he wants to jump in it. He’s a rich junkie but he asks God to save him. All he really wants is the money.
Charlie Smarts & DJ Ill Digits ft. 9th Wonder - Outbreak: Charlie Smarts and DJ Ill Digits dropped one of my favorite projects of the week with “Charlietape”. I originally heard “Outbreak” on the Apple Music New Hip-Hop playlist but I knew that this had to be part of an album. When I checked out the whole thing it had the same 90’s Hip-Hop, Backpacker Boom-Bap sound that is rarely used anymore. My favorite track is “Air Max 95” with Skyzoo and I also loved “Outbreak” the collab with producer 9th Wonder (formerly of Little Brother). These guys are sicker than your average. They hit hard like Manti Te’o. The freaks try to leach them, but none of that going down. The soul vocals in the back and the hi-hat snare loop really sauce this one up. Other highlights from “Charlietape”:
Hater’s Anonymous (ft. KLIM)
Yadda Yadda
Air Max 95 (ft. Skyzoo)
Chill The Party (ft. Tab-one)
Amir Obé - WALKING ON WATER: After dropping the single with PND, Amir Obé dropped a new project this week called “after.” Dope project, it has that melodic sound throughout, almost like R&B-Rap. I really love the opening track “BULLETPROOF” and of course the PND collab “TALK TO ME NICE” that was dropped in the lead up. My favorite album cut is “WALKING ON WATER”. It's got a nice bounce to it and finds AO lamenting a love lost. She’s cried a bucket of tears and even if he loses her, he will never lose his smile when he thinks about the time they spent together. He’s calling for her and he’s willing to do anything for her (even walk on water).
Lola Brooke - Just Relax: The bite-sized Brooklyn Spitter dropped a new track this week that’s going dummy in the club. “Just Relax” samples Black Sheep’s “The Choice is Yours” (you prolly remember it as “You can get with this or you can get with that”). She been a bad bitch since she was born and she stays dripped with ice. All her haters tryna be like her but they can never be This (her). Her advice to the opps? Just Relax.
G Herbo - What You Need: G Herbo dropped a new project this week called “Strictly 4 My Fans 2”. My favorite track is “What You Need” where Swervo asks his chick what she needs. He’s got yachts, jets, and drop top whips so she can travel in style. He’s got VVS diamonds and bags of cash he drops off to her. Anything her heart desires he’s gonna supply.
Just Juice, Logic & Trippie Redd - Sweeter Scars: Just Juice got two very different artists to collab on his new track “Sweeter Scars”, Emo Rap superstar Trippie Redd and lyricist Logic. Trippie is a natural fit on the song as JJ has those emo vibes too and Logic’s bars flow excellently over this beat. Juice talks about being scarred by the lies his shawty told him. The pain hurts him deep but he finds the truth in the lies for a sweeter future. Logic is focused on money and he’s breaking up with all the bullshit. He knows you gotta crawl before you walk and he’s graduated to running. He uses his love for music as the metaphor instead of a romantic relationship. Trippie’s shawty is just running game and he’s on the sideline. He promises if you play with his heart it won’t end well. The last girl that broke his heart left him really really hurt.
JMB Juvie - OK: Georgia spitter JMB Juvie dropped a new project this week called “Long Way 4rm Home”. Dope project, my favorite track “OK” has a soul beat and an inspirational message. Juvie dreamed about be a millionaire but his teachers told him he wouldn’t be shit. He still made it to the top and now he cops foreigns off the lot. He asks, What’s the point of gaining the world and losing his soul? He perseveres through the trials and tribulations, pains and stress, fakeness, and he just wants to feel love. The material shit doesn’t phase him, he just wants to feel OK.
Blueface - Hello: Blueface Baby! The polarizing artist dropped a new track this week. The beat is crazy and Blue talks that player shit throughout the track. He drives to the flyest of whips and lays the game on thick to his bottom bittie. He asks her to refrain from asking him certain types of questions and lets her know if she didn’t hear him, then what he said wasn’t meant for her. He also is a fan of swimming to the butt when it’s that time of month.
Shordie Shordie - Bonita: DMV artist Shordie Shordie dropped a new project this week called “A Life For Two”. My favorite track is “Bonita” where Shordie’s girl asks him to come over, and when he comes through, she doesn’t want him to leave. She wants to have him all the time. Catchy hook too “Can I, can I, can I…”
Murda B - Oh Nah: NY Driller Murda B dropped a new EP this week called “Murda She Wrote”. I really like the track “Heartless” and my favorite track is “Oh Nah” which has an EDM feel but is definitely an NY Drill track. When Murda B catches a lick in the daytime, she wants to see everybody move. It works as a dance track and a spin the block anthem.
Miguel - Give It To Me: Miggy’s back with a new track. It has an experimental sound (sounds like something Ye would spit on). It’s definitely soulful and has a funky kick. Miguel spits to his shawty and encourages her to let go and unwind. He loves what she’s got and he asks her to give it to him. Present him the buns so he can glaze them.
