The Hit List #11: (July 5 - July 11) [2021]
Vince Staples - MHM: This week, Vince released his self-titled 4th studio album. MHM is the final track on the project and it’s one of the best. On it, the Long Beach MC touches on a range of topics from freeing the homies to sliding up in some wet and juicy to having to slide on the opps if shit gets thick. Go listen to “Vince Staples” in its entirety. 10 tracks of lyrical excellence.
IDK ft. Westside Gunn, Jay Electronica & MF DOOM - Red: IDK released his sophomore album “USEE4YOURSELF” and it’ll be in Album of Year conversations. This standout track is the most star-studded and has a Big Tymers “Still Fly” sample plus Mike Jones ad libs. The whole album is a cohesive musical masterpiece. IDK opens up and delivers heartfelt bars and also talks that shit. Check out these other tracks from “USEE4YOURSELF”:

Childish Major - F Yah Job: “Your job don’t need you, like I need you” C Major gets borderline toxic, encouraging his shawty to say Fuck Ya Job and come kick it with him on the weekend. He ready to do some freaky thangs and get her to the peak of Mount O. Tough Tune.
Snoh Aalegra ft. Tyler, The Creator - NEON PEACH: Snoh Aalegra dropped a project this week entitled “If You Snoh You Snoh” my bad, it’s actually called, “TEMPORARY HIGHS IN THE VIOLET SKIES”. The Swedish born singer collabed with Tyler on this one, synergizing their summer releases. The song is about rekindling the flame. Putting the past behind you. And even though one (or both of you) were being too extra, it ain’t too late to run it back. Also from “TEMPORARY HIGHS IN THE VIOLET SKIES”:
LOST YOU
WE DON'T HAVE TO TALK ABOUT IT
ON MY MIND
TASTE
Popcaan - Find Dem: The OVO Dancehall artist dropped a bop! On “Find Dem” Popcaan describes his large and diverse arsonal and warns his enemies that he has a particular set of skills and he will find you and use those skills to send you to the forever sleep.
Mariah the Scientist - Revenge: The ATL songstress released her second album “Ry Ry World” this week. Her growth as an artist is on full display throughout the project and is most evident on the final track “Revenge”. Over a sample of Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me A River” the self-styled Scientist describes the painful aspects of love and also her desire to exact her revenge on the dude that hurt her. Some other standouts from “Ry Ry’s World”:
Aura
Walked In (ft. Young Thug)
2 You
Always n Forever (ft. Lil Baby)
Hotboy Wes ft. Gucci Mane - My Lil Dance: The New 1017 putting together a squad! With Pooh Shiesty, BigWalkDog and now Hotboy Wes, Gucci building a dream team over there. With a minimalist beat carried by keys, Hotboy delivers energetic bars about the come up, getting money, exotic cars, legal firearms, mops, microwaves and his lil dance. Gucci finishes up with a non-traditional speedy flow about how his diamonds do a lil dance, moving weight and ballin like he play for Clemson.
Styles P - Time Traveler: SP the Ghost released a new project this week called “Ghosting”. On “Time Traveler” the Bad Boy Alum reminisces about his career, his travels and buckles up because he knows he’s still on the grind. Other standouts from “Ghosting”:

Scattered
Close To Me
Some Niggas
Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis ft. Sounds of Blackness - Til I Found You: The legendary producers dropped “Volume 1” this week, a new project that I thought was a greatest hits album when I first saw it on the Apple Store. But after listening to a certain podcast, and finding out it's that new new, I had to check it out and it didn’t disappoint. I like this song because it sounds like an R&B joint but it’s dedicated to The Lord. And I need The Lord to know that I’m fucking with him, I’m ridin with him, and I’ll A-Town stomp any nigga that don’t put respek on his name. With the assistance of Sounds of Blackness (whose song “Optimistic'' is one of my all time favorites) Jam & Lewis opened their new drop with solid gold! More Fire from “Volume One”:
The Next Best Day (ft. Boyz II Men)
Somewhat Loved (There You Go Breakin’ My Heart) (ft. Mariah Carey)
He Don’t Know Nothin’ bout It (ft. Babyface)
Do What I Do (ft. Charlie Wilson)
Babylove (ft. Morris Day, Jerome & The Roots)
Lil Tecca & Amine - Gametime: Off the new “Space Jam: A New Legacy” soundtrack the Teenage Manance (LT) and the African Assassin (Amine) made a radio-ready, hip-hop-EDM mashup. With an Onyx “Slam” sample and a bunch of b-ball references about whistles, officials, dunking, euro-stepping, LeBron, Taco Tuesday (a LeBron thing) this fits the theme of the project perfectly. Some other Tough Tunes from the Space Jam soundtrack:
Hoops (ft. Salt-n-Pepa, Saweetie & Kash Doll)
Pump Up the Jam (ft. Lil Uzi Vert)
Just For Me (ft. Saint Jhn & SZA)
Mercy (ft. Jonas Brothers)
About That Time (ft. Dame D.O.L.L.A., G-Eazy, P-Lo & White Dave)
MVP (ft. BROCKHAMPTON)
My Guy (ft. Leon Bridges)
The Best (ft. Anthony Ramos)
Glasses Malone ft. The Game & Kurupt - Gangsta Boogie: West Coast Royalty on this one. This track has a funky “Doggystyle” feel. Glasses brags about piping his opps baby moms. He also gives advice “My advice is for you to be you”. All Game ever needs is his balls and his glock.
Bas ft. J. Cole ft. Tjay - The Jackie: Dreamville and NY’s Lil Tjay dropped a gem this week. “You see the droptop” Cole insists the ladies stop playin with him as they see the drip with their own 2 eyes. Bas is riding through NY on The Jackie Robinson Parkway hot and bothered and asks a young lady he’s courting why haven't they smashed yet. He knows of a couple cats she’s been with and knows that he’s shittin on them suckas. He must’ve been convincing, because he grabs a rubber, goes to her crib, and gets it popping!
KILLY - EUPHORIC: “Tomorrow ain’t promised” Killy spits game over a bass-heavy, uptempo beat. He not new to this, he true to this. He’s the light to the darkness and he trusts the process. He’s born in, never sworn in, everything him and his crew do is historic.
GaTa - Check Up: “Dave” is Lil Dicky’s show on FX and it’s where the world was introduced to his hypeman GaTa. On this week’s episode GaTa is working on a new song but also experiences a series of unfortunate events. It culminates with him finally getting to a Bar Mitzvah he was sposed to perform at with LD, but LD got kicked out and the birthday boy asks him to perform in his place so he gets hit time to shine and performs this track to the party guests while standing on his Gold 04’ Impala. It’s a dope track too!
Haviah Mighty - Avocado: Haviah got it and she know it. She’s super confident and knows you’re noticing her. She knows you’re on her heels, following her, starting to fall in love with her essence. She’s a ball of bravado and she encourages us all to embody that as well. “If energy is off, I gotta block it and delete it, this shit is for my warriors who broken down and beaten, Y’all just need that armor on your body and beneath it, your Confidence is Freedom.”
