The Hit List: week 113 (June 19 - June 25)
Joyner Lucas - Broski: Joyner has already stamped himself as one of the illest storytellers of our generation. Imagine my surprise when I listened to this new track “Broski” and the rollercoaster of emotions this fictional (or not) one-sided conversation with one of his homies takes you on. It’s something that anyone who has experienced some success (and may have family or friends that have not achieved equal or greater success) can relate to. It’s one of the best tracks of the year and his album better be coming out soon because it seems like a quarter to a half of the tracks have dropped already.
Young Thug ft. Drake - Parade on Cleveland: Thugger dropped his previously teased album “Business is Business” this week and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Hella dope features, two by Drake including this opening track where Drake gets his shit off then there is a jail convo between him and Jeffry, then Slime goes in. Check out “Business is Business” and these highlights:
Money On The Dresser
Gucci Grocery Bag
Wit Da Racks (ft. 21 Savage)
Went Thru It
Mad Dog
Lil Tjay - June 22nd: Tjay dropped this track to commemorate the 1-year anniversary of an incident where he almost lost his life. He’s bounced back physically and his career is continuing its upward trajectory. He knows he has to stay on his toes and he talks about the days leading up to the incident. Grinding in the stu, meeting IceSspice, getting some sleep. He was cruising when he noticed a car following him, but eventually they peeled off. Later on, on the way back to the studio, he was ambushed. Luckily his instincts helped save his own life.
Baby Money - 12th Street: Detroit’s Baby Money dropped a new album this week called “YNOS2”. It features many of The D’s young superstars and has that New Detroit sound. My favorite track is “12th Street” with the Christmas-carol vocals on the hook. Baby describes getting his heartbroken but still gettin to the business. Him and his crew are known for getting money and smashing the baddest bitties. They keep the poles tucked so the opps need to watch out. They got motion all around the city. And he makes a witty reference to the Simpsons knowing shit that happens years in advance (almost psychic). Other standouts from “YNOS 2”:
5:47
Had To Ask (with Babyface Ray)
Done Wit Amiri
How Many Times (ft. Skilla Baby)
Yo Fault
Nicki Minaj & Ice Spice - Barbie World: 2 of the hottest artists in the game linked for their second collab. This one’s a flip of Aqua’s smash hit “Barbie Girl” and it dropped just in time for the new Barbie feature film starring Margot Robbie. I’d imagine this one will be on the soundtrack and/or be included in the film. You should check out the video too if you haven’t yet.
Coi Leray & David Guetta - Make My Day: Coi dropped a new album this week called “COI” and it’s full of bops. She couldn’t have picked better samples and my favorite track is her collab with megaproducer/DJ David Guetta which samples Technotronic’s classic “Pump Up The Jam”. Check out “Coi” and these standouts:
Bitch Girl
Players
My Body
Don’t Chat Me Up (with Giggs)
Run It Up
Juice Wrld & Cordae - Doomsday: I’m consistently impressed with the amount of music Juice Wrld recorded before his untimely death. 3 years (and 2 full albums and a couple deluxes) later and there’s still more music dropping. This one with Grammy nominated (and Naomi’s Baby Daddy) Cordae and it samples Eminem’s “Role Model” (who also features on the intro of the video). This is the first single of the Lyrical Lemonade album (shoutout Cole Bennett) and it finds the guys going back and forth over the classic instrumental. This seems like an organic collab as Juice mentions Cordae by name (unless this is an AI verse…)
Key Glock - Last Man Standing: Key Glock dropped the Deluxe to his most recent project “Glockoma 2”. This edition adds 8 new tracks and the one I’ve had on repeat is the last of them, “Last Man Standing”. Over a saucy, soulful beat he promises the opps that they can go body for body, man for man. At the end of the day, he’s gonna be The Last Man Standing. Check out “Glockoma 2” (Deluxe) and these highlights:
Sucker Free
No Hook
Penny
Stormzy & Fredo - Toxic Trait: UK Heavyweights Stormzy & Fredo dropped a new Drill track and they were talking that shit. Stormz let it be known that his circle is small, and he crowned himself the GOAT. He likes when the girlies are direct (he doesn't do the passive aggressiveness). Fredo is on the block all day getting that guap. He likes to dine in France and smash real sisters.
TeeFlii & DOM KENNEDY - Pleasures: Mr. 24 Hours and Dom dropped a collab project this week called “I Love Stocker”. Dope project full of wavy West Coast bops (with the ladies as the main subject matter). The opening track “Pleasures” sets the tone for the whole album. Tee asks his shawty to shake her caboose and make it clap, then sit on his lap. Dom asks her to shake it like a Polaroid. She’s the best thing on the dance floor and he tells her to meet him by the exit before the club closes. Check out “I Love Stocker” and these standouts:
South Beach
Horoscope (ft. Diamond Ortiz)
Taking Pictures (ft. TROY NKA)
Caravaggio
Burna Boy & 21 Savage - Sitting On Top Of The World: The African Giant and Slaughter Gang Prez dropped a new collab that samples the Brandy & Mase hit “Top of the World”. Burna croons to his bottom bae. He just wants her to feel his Thug Passion and enjoy spending time in his mansion and his villa. They can cruise in his drop top and just kick it because they’re Sittin On Top of the World. She survived the darkest of times so she deserves the best of the best. 21 helps his shawty shit on anybody that ever hated. Nothing he does is basic, and he promises to ice her wrist with baguette diamonds. They’re chilling in his Penthouse literally on Top of the World.
Lil Poppa - 1 Night < For Life: Lil Poppa dropped a new album called “Half Man, Half Vamp” and it was trending as soon as it dropped. Dope project, I like his melodic flow. My favorite track was an acoustic dedication to True Love. He wanna catch a wave with his boo and build a strong friendship. He needs a rider and wants them both to put their pride to the side. He’s hoping 1 Night turns into 4 Life. Other highlights from “Half Man, Half Vamp”:
Problems Back Home (ft. Lehla Samia)
Novacane
REASON - You Betta (Jesus Take The Wheel): TDE’s REASON had a Top Tier track on the Rory album last month and now he’s back with a new loosie. Reez lets Jesus take the wheel (even with the Glock on his lap). He lets the lil bitties know they better chill. He likes ass bouncing because he’s got a lot on his plate and big booties help him decompress. He needs some good energy and wants to fly overseas with a bop and eat the poonani on the hotel balcony.
Boosie Badazz - Southern Hospitality: after being arrested recently, Boosie was finally granted bond and celebrated his release with a new album called “First Day Back”. This project has the spirit of those classic motivational Boosie tracks like “Chasing My Dream”. I doubled back on the Rich Homie Quan collab “Be Alright” immediately. And I also caught a vibe to “Southern Hospitality” where Boosie describes that Down South cooking (Grandma’s cooking to be exact) and that country courtesy. Saying grace, asking about the family, saying sir and ma’am. The beat even feels like Southern Hospitality. Other standouts from “First Day Back”:
Be Alright ft. (Rich Homie Quan)
Words Mean More
Jumpin (ft. Tootie Raww)
Thank Ya
Babyfxce E - Today: Another week, another great find on the Apple Music New Hip Hop Playlist. This week it comes from Detroit’s Babyfxce E (who’s currently on tour with Luh Tyler). This one has a Detroit-type beat and finds E describing what he’s getting into Today including: spending 5 or 6 bands on some drip, pulling up with the switch, wearing a sheisty all day, and getting a prescription from his doctor.
Other Tracks/Projects That Dropped This Week
Logic - Figure It Out
Chris Brown - Summer Too Hot
Stefflon Don - Move It
GOON DES GARCONS* - sightseeing (Album)
