The Hit List: week 116 (July 10 - July 16)
King Von ft. Hotboii & Moneybagg Yo - Out Of The Streets: King Von’s estate dropped his 2nd posthumous album this week called “Grandson” and it’s top tier. Polished beats, rhymes are A1 (they didn’t scrape the bottom of the barrel and piece it together, it’s a really well done project). My favorite track is this collab with Moneybagg and Hotboii. Von uses a melodic delivery and expresses his desire to get Out of The Streets and to just make it through the week. It may be the most introspective song I’ve heard from him. He talks about never quitting and being there for his family and friends. I’ve had this on repeat. Check out “Grandson” and these standouts:
Don’t Miss
Real Oppy (ft. G Herbo)
From The Hood (with Lil Durk)
Pressure
Heartless (with Tee Grizzley)
Jealous (with BreezyLYN & Tink)
All We Do is Drill
When I Die
Blxst & Remble - child of GOD: One of my favorite drops of the week came from these 2 Cali artists. It’s heartfelt, soulful and motivational. Blxst is a COG, defeating all odds. He ain’t clocked out, he's still on his job. He’s seen it all, the real and fake. Lost friends from the success. He checks on his strong friends and lets them know he’s by their side no matter what. He knows it’s lonely up top so he keeps his squad around him. The beat flips and then Remble praises the Lord and encourages us to also let go and let God. It gets active where he’s from but he knows the armor of the Most High will keep him protected. RJMrLA must have made the beat because he pops up with a couple adlibs at the end.
Bandgang Lonnie Bands - Verbaly Painting/White castle: One of my new favorite rappers dropped an album called “Bam Bam” this week. A lot of catchy tracks, unique flows, and sometimes humorous subject matter. I been bumping “Verbaly Painting/White castle” quite a bit. He be painting pictures on these verses. No amount of money will change him and he admits that he makes mistakes, he’s human. He paints his life on these instrumentals. Give “Bam Bam” a listen and don’t miss these highlights:
Picture me Skatin/Sweet beaver
My Baby
God Principle/Chilled out
Sun Up Sun Down/Bright future
Unk baby/Angelic
Wynne & Chris Patrick - Wife: Another week, another great find on the Apple Music New Hip Hop Playlist. This time it comes from West Coast Wynne and Jersey’s own Chris Patrick. It’s grown and sexy and Wynne talks about being a freak in the sheets and a lady in the streets. After they do the nasty, she makes her dude breakfast in the morning. She’s planting her flag as wifey material. CP’s first bar hit hard as he questions his shawty’s loyalty with a reference to a current event. He claims he got the Hall Of Fame D like the ‘85 Bears, and the way he puts it down, she is gonna want to be his wife.
Lil Tjay - Nobody: Lil Teej dropped “222”, a new project this week (and I believe the 1st since the incident where he almost lost his life last year). He touches on that incident on the album (specifically on “June 22nd”) and uses his melodic flow to spit about the ladies, the opps, and grinding from the gutter. My favorite track “Nobody” samples the Jay-Z hit “Song Cry” and finds LT making his case for being one of the best in the game right now. He’s himself in any room he walks in, and when he had his back to the wall, he had Nobody. He still managed to rise to the top without fake streams/views or switching up. Other highlights from “222”:
June 22nd
Stressed (ft. Summer Walker)
Bla Bla (ft. Fivio Foreign)
Someone Who Cares
Hole In My Heart (ft. Jadakiss)
Project Walls (ft. NBA Youngboy)
Beat The Odds Pt. 2 (ft. Polo G)
Quavo & Future - Turn Yo Clic Up: ATL’s finest linked for this loosie. It has that Migos bounce and Quay promises to never spill the tea or give the scoop. The streets need bosses and he encourages us to Turn (our) Clic Up. He’s standing on business and now he’s touching all the diamonds. Future uses his verse to mention some people by name including his child’s stepfather and a couple of his baby mamas. He came from Zone 6 and now he’s floating like a blimp. Everyone around him is on Go, turned up.
JPEGMAFIA & Danny Brown - Guess What Bitch, We Back Hoe!: Peggy and Danny dropped a Deluxe of their collab project “Scaring The Hoes” this one called “DLC Pack - EP”. The bar that got the most press was a light jab at Baby Keem on “No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No!...” but my favorite track is the opener “Guess What Bitch, We Back Hoe!”. It has a bit of that 90’s R&B feel with that experimental Peggy sound. Danny starts it off and surfs the beat effortlessly. JPEG comes in with his smooth vocals and navigates the 2nd verse. Danny closes with the hook and then the beat has a solo of its own to close.
Blac Youngsta - Free Thugger: I think the title for this one speaks for itself. The Heavy Camp CEO uses this track to call for Jeffery Lamar Williams’ freedom. He says they treat certain people like menaces and even though he stays strapped to protect himself, he’s not a goon. He warns the opps that he’s not the one to play with though. The beat knocks and is perfect for bumping in the whip.
Dave East - Million Off Rap: Multi-hyphenate Dave East dropped a new album this week called “Fortune Favors the Bold”. Dope project, with some A-list features. I really like “Million Off Rap”. It’s a smooth track and Dave proclaims to be a young fly nigga who made a Million Off Rap (no lies detected). He’s been through the most to get his niggas on the map. Taking trips, he’s legit, and his opps are cappin. He wasn’t the only one on the block hustlin, but they didn’t move work like he did. He knows he’ll take some losses, but it doesn’t phase him because he knows he’ll make it back. Check out “Fortune Favors the Bold” and these standouts:
Still Here
Long Way (ft. Cordae)
Can’t Make This Up
Good Things (ft. Ty Dolla $ign)
Weirdos (ft. Jadakiss)
It’s A Lot
Maiya The Don & Shawny Bin Laden - Luv U Better: Maiya & Shawny cooked up a NY Drill version of Mary J and Lil Kim’s smash hit “I Can Love You”. The message is simple: they can love better than anyone else. Don’t settle for less.
The Mekanix ft. Haiti Babii - Memories: Bay Area producers The Mekanix dropped a new project called “Restoration 2” and it may be my favorite drop of the week. It features hella Bay Area greats (and even features a dedication track to close it out). I love the “OT Vibes” Remix with Su & Bean and I’ve had “Memories” with Haiti Babii on repeat. It’s downtempo but still has that New West Coast bop. HB went from rags to riches but he doesn’t forget the times when he didn’t have anything. He doesn't forget the chicks who broke his heart either. He also knows it’s a warzone outside so he moves with caution. He won’t hesitate to slide on the opps and always watches out for the devil’s temptation. We all got a story and he raps his on this track. Go listen to “Restoration 2” and these highlights:
Sucka Duckin (ft. Eddi Penthouse & 4 Rax)
OT Vibes (Remix) [with Iamsu! & Lil Bean]
Back (ft. Shoddy Boi & Don Hollywood)
Follow My Lead (ft. Clyde Carson, Shady Nate & 4 Rax)
The Truth (ft. LaRussell, Jane Hancock & Rexx Life Raj)
Meet Me In The Hood (ft. ShooterGang Kony & ZayBang)
Sleepy Hallow - Good Girls Ain’t No Fun: NY’s Sleepy Hallow got tied up in a lil incident earlier this year but that didn't stop him from dropping new music. He’s back again with a new wavy Drill track for the Bad Bitties. He can put the whole world in shawty’s hands so he tells her to drop the addy so they can smoke, drink, cruise in the Lam, and vibe out. He ran up the racks and now all the girls want him to hit it from the back.
DSTRCT - Rich Bi$$h: 10 Summers signee DSTRCT dropped a new project called “Installation 002” this week. I’m still bumpin his last project and this new one has some bops on it too. I also was relieved to finally hear the correct pronunciation of his stage name (pronounced District and not Distract or Destruct). I was vibing out to “Rich Bi$$h”. Of course Mustard on the Beat (hoe) and DSTRCT describes his very expensive shawty. She got millions on her wish list including Balenciaga, Chanel & Bottega. Broke guys can’t even look at her. She pushes a Range or a G Wag and her wrist is always lit up. Other standouts from “Installation 002”:
Day At A Time
One Way Or Another
As Fate Would Have It
Erick the Architect - Parkour: The Flatbush Zombie dropped a new track that was produced by James Blake. It has a New Wave vibe with pitched up & screwed vocals and from ETA. Erick wouldn’t change a thing about how he leveled up. He moved and changed his attitude now no one can walk in his shoes. He’s future-proof, and he talks to God when he’s confused.
J Hus ft. Burna Boy - Masculine: After a lead up single with The Boy himself, UK’s J Hus dropped a new album called “Beautiful And Brutal Yard”. I loved the collab tracks and the variety of sounds on the project. This Burna Boy track hooked me as soon as it came on. It has some Afrobeats vibes and Burna Boy vocals are perfect for the beat. He loves to play the villain. He likes to make a killing in the club and all he asks is that the DJ play his music. J Hus slaps the haters silly while rocking a Richard Mille. He’ll take your girl at the party and when you go to his city you better check in. Check out “Beautiful And Brutal Yard” and these standouts:
Who Told You (ft. Drake)
Nice Body (ft. Jorja Smith)
Alien Girl
My Baby
It’s Crazy
Playing Chess
KenTheMan - I Love A Freak: KenTheMan dropped a new loosie this week and it’s gonna go up in the club for sure. It samples Master P’s classic “Freak Hoes” and KTM asks for a freak nigga, a street nigga, and you gotta be a munch. She don’t want you if you ain’t nasty. And if you fit the description, she’ll bounce on the D til you explode.
Blueface - House Arrest: Mr. Bleedem dropped a super catchy loosie this week. He’s on house arrest but he got two bitties jumping on his bed. None of his chicks leave for good (they always come back by the weekend). Because he can’t leave the crib, he’s thinking bout cuffing one of them.
King Combs & Fabolous ft. A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie - Flyest In The City: Puffy Jr. dropped a new EP this week called “C3”. He has a cheat code because he has access to Bad Boys' expansive catalog to sample from. He dropped another toptier bop that is a re-rock of the Total & Biggie Smalls smash hit “Can’t You See” and this one will for sure be on the radio non-stop.
