The Hit List: week 117 (July 17 - July 23)
Snoh Aalegra - Be My Summer: Queen Snoh dropped a masterpiece this week. I’ve had this on repeat since it dropped and I’m not the biggest R&B guy either. Snoh asks her boo thang to Be (her) Summer and protect her from the rain. The piano chords and the background vocals really sauce up the intro. She sings about trying to move on from mans but she wants to rekindle the flame.
Travis Scott, Bad Bunny & The Weeknd - K-POP: Trav’s next album “Utopia” is scheduled to drop Friday 7/28 with a concert in Egypt to boot. This is the leadup single and he got 2 more of the biggest artists of our generation to bless the track. The title pays homage to the uber popular genre that includes BTS, BLACKPINK, Psy and many more. The actual track has Afrobeats vibes and Bad Bunny’s vocals give it a Latin twist. All 3 gents fit effortlessly onto the track and you know Abel gets into his drugs & pain bag and mixes it with some sex and the luxury life bars. Yachty catches a stray but it could just be some wordplay.
Nas - Black Magic: Nas dropped his 5th album in like 3 years this week with “Magic 2”. It’s his fifth consecutive project with Hit-Boy executive producing and they did once again make Magic (no pun intended). As a hall of fame lyricist Nasty Nas touches on many timely subjects with an expert use of language. My favorite track is “What This All Really Means” but I want to highlight “Black Magic”. It has a perfect beat that adds layers as it goes along. Nas talks about the undefeated nature of Black Magic (and Black Culture). Black Culture is more than fat asses and gold chains. He asks The Lord to protect the ladies and the children and promises to use sage to keep the evil spirits at bay. Check out “Magic 2” and these highlights:
Abracadabra
What This All Really Means
Pistols On Your Album Cover
One Mic, One Gun (with 21 Savage)
Drake & Central Cee - On The Radar Freestyle: So Drizzy linked one of UK’s hottest up and comers for a Freestyle (which in this day in age is just a hookless written verse or verses over an original beat and usually more than 16 bars). Drake got in his Mans Dem bag and the streets have gone crazy with a meme of him saying “Combination”. The bars were A1 from both guys (of course that were talking extra spicy) and I didn’t think this would be one I had in the Serrato but I definitely had to add it. It joins the other Drake UK freestyles “Behind Barz/Link Up TV Freestyle” Headie One’s “Only You Freestyle” and “Fire In the Booth Freestyle” as examples of Drake’s versatility and ability to get in that UK rap bag.
NLE Choppa & 2Rare - Don’t Run: The youngins did it again. After dropping the absolute banger “Do It Again” last year, these two are back with another bop for your headtop. This one (like the last one) has that Philly Bounce sound (that has its roots in Jersey/Baltimore Club and that Uzi revived on “I Wanna Rock”). It samples Salt-N-Pepa’s super smash hit “Push It” and it’ll go up in the club all summer. Don’t be surprised to hear this one on the radio a lot.
Roy Woods - Don’t Mind Me: COVO Sound’s Roy Woods dropped a new 3 pack this week. My favorite of the three is “Don’t Mind Me” which finds Roy confessing to smashing the friend of one of his tings. They’re both creeping and she the side ting and ain’t even in his starting lineup. He fucks who he wants to, shorty ain’t his girl. The girl he’s addressing is talking to him real crazy and he values his peace of mind so he’s telling her to kick rocks.
OMB Peezy ft. Peezy - Never Change: Couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the two Peezy’s had linked. Cali’s OMB Peezy and Detroit’s Peezy cooked up a special track (that I’ve had on repeat). It samples Mike Jones’ “Flossin” and finds the guys promising to Never Change despite the fame or the game. On the gang, they gon’ stay the same: sippin drank, stacking paper, and smashing the bitties. They been running it up in the streets and will continue to shine and putting they people on.
FRVRFRIDAY - WHO ELSE? - Canada’s FRVRFRIDAY dropped a new album this week called “CRUISE CONTROL”. Dope project, I’ve been bumping “WHO ELSE?” quite a bit. He asks one of his girlies Who Else can do it like him. She plays with fire, but he’s the fireman and he knows how to keep the flames contained. He needs her in his life and he’s willing to get her anything she desires. Other standouts from “Cruise Control”:
WHAT I GOTTA DO
RUSH HOUR
Denzel Curry - BLOOD ON MY NIKEZ: 32Zel dropped a new loosie and it’s a certified banger. He calls out the lames as he wipes the blood off his Nikes. He’s a real nigga and he’ll never snitch. He’ll make the chopper sing like Sam Cooke if you don’t keep his name out your mouth. After he pops your top, he asks The Lord to forgive him for all his sins and then he once again wipes the blood off his Nikes.
Lupe Fiasco - Roc-A-Fella Y’all: This nigga gotta have an album coming as this is like his 4th track in the last 2 months. All the tracks have had different vibes and subject matter too. This one is one of the most Lupe-est tracks (bars on bars on bars). It’s also 5 minutes (unheard of in this day and age). He starts off with the quote Dave Chappelle made famous in his Rick James skit “We should never gave you niggas money!” He claims the title as the most cancelled rapper but he refused to fall. He kept grinding, and now he’s a part of a lyrical miracle Biblical guild somewhere between Jazz, Jigga, and Drill. He really goes in on this track, and if we get a whole album of this… I won’t be listening to shit else for a minute.
Babyface Ray & Vory - Dancing With The Devil, Pt. 2: Babyface Ray dropped a new album this week called “Summer’s Mine”. Lots of great tracks on this one, my favorite is the Vory collab “Dancing With The Devil, Pt. 2”. Beat is wavy as Ray talks about how he worked from a bench player to the starting lineup. He’s getting all the guap and although he loves the luxury items, he stashes some dough away for investments. He goes in for like 40 bars straight. Vory been getting the type of money that turns the homies against you. His only therapy is the meds because all the fuckery is getting to his head. Check out “Summer’s Mine” and these standouts:
Bosses Linking With Bosses (with Veeze)
All Star Team
I75
Skateland
My Thoughts 4
Mario & Lil Wayne ft. Tyga - Main One: Mario’s all grown up and still making quality R&B tracks. He burst onto the scene with “Just a Friend” and he’s back with Young Money alums Tyga & Weezy for a track dedicated to the Bottom Bitties. The guys have a whole list of names on their roster, they ain’t fucking with the same one. They know some of the ladies want to be the main one and most of them are high maintenance. They love when she drops it low. They’ll take her to Jamaica so they can figure out if she will indeed be the Main One.
Fridayy - When It Comes To You: Fridayy dropped a new loosie this week. It’s a love ballad and his distinct vocals make this one special. The shawty he’s singing to came into his life while he was sinking and she kept him afloat. He was outside on demon time, creeping, but when he seent her, it was love at first sight. For her, he’s putting his pride to the side. He won’t waste no time When It Comes To (her) and he’ll give his all to her.
Valee & Harry Fraud ft. 03 Greedo - About That: Valee dropped a collab project with Harry Fraud this week called “Virtuoso” and it’s his most polished project to date. The features are top notch, the beats are obviously A1. My favorite track is the 03 Greedo collab “About That”. It starts off with the quote Geno Smith made last year “They wrote me off but I didn't write back”. Valee asks how he is supposed to feel about that. He be lighting the exotic before hitting the booth. He likes to get top and box in the whip, and if shawty does a great job, he’ll buy her a bag. Greedy asks how he is supposed to feel about his niggas getting killed. And about niggas sending threats, and when they cut the snow with the fenty. Check out “Virtuoso” and these highlights:
Sea Bass
Vibrant (with Action Bronson)
Washington Wizard
Watermelon Automobile (ft. Saba & MAVI)
Ufillme
Bas & J. Cole - Passport Bros: The Dreamville guys dropped a new track with island vibes. Clase Azul got them feeling some type of way. They just wanna drink and watch the ladies put they hands on their knees and back that azz up. They don’t shell out cash for the pros, but they’ll spend a little bread when they’re out in Barcelona.
Big Boss Vette - Ghetto Love: BBV dropped a new album called “RESILIENCE”. Excellent project with some radio ready bops. I love the samples used and my favorite track is “Ghetto Love” where she talks about fighting then fuckin. Smoking the gas and having her dude beat it up til it sound like macaroni (macaroni sounds included on the track). Other standouts from “RESILIENCE”:
Get It
Can’t FWM
A$AP Rocky - RIOT (Rowdy Pipe’n): He’s back!!! He made headlines for sneak dissing somebody at Rolling Loud (I don’t know who, and honestly don’t care, although the streets saying the shot was at either Travis Scott or Ian Connor). But more notably, he dropped this new track with a snap beat. Rock raps about smoking the Za and chilling with his megastar Baby Ma. He bought a Rolls-Royce and a Porsche and if any pussy nigga tries him, he’s going to start a Riot.
CHIKA - MAD: Chitown’s CHIKA dropped a new track this week and it had me hooked from the start. Triumphant beat with horns sets the tone as Chika gets in her introspective bag. She smokes gas and sips drank to cope. She has a perpetual chip on her shoulder and she’s tired of faking like a poser. She’s told us about the good times and the bad times, and at this point in time, she's MAD. The beat takes some twists and turns as the track progresses and it adds some special sauce.
Ice Spice - How High: Ms. Munch dropped a deluxe to her debut project “Like..?” this week. It added 4 new tracks (I believe) my favorite of which is “How High”. She uses a melodic flow to let a special someone know that even though she’s a baddie, she also has feelings. He loves her because she bougie and cocky. She has him wrapped around her finger so when she says jump, he asks, How High?
Jeremih ft. 2 Chainz & Adekunle Gold - Room: Jeremih and Hitmaka cooked up another bop and it’s definitely gonna get hella radio spins. Jeremih suggests him and a young lady should get a room (presumably to do some downright nasty shit). The beat has island vibes and some Afrobeats sauce (makes sense with the Adekunle Gold feature). Tity Boi adds a grown and sexy verse to close out.
Capella Grey - Sun Goes Down: The “Gyalis” artist dropped a new project this week called “HERE, damn.” My favorite track is “Sun Goes Down” On it, CG uses a melodic flow to pour his heart out to his main ting. She’s the baddest in the room and he can’t help but stare at her. He loves the way she moves so he had to approach. He wants to get to know her better so he can love her better.
SleazyWorldGo ft. Luh Tyler - Don’t Get Ya Feelings In It: Two XXL Freshmen linked to drop a gem this week. It’s a smooth track and it’s extremely Player. They tell the ladies not to get their feelings hurt. Sleazy ain’t a cheater he just likes to flirt. He likes OPP and squirters. He’ll knock a opp down if he don’t keep his distance. Tyler pockets been getting fatter and now he gets the baddest bitties. He warns not to spend all your bread on the ladies (or else you're gonna be a brokie). He smokes the finest of marijuana and pushes the finest of whips.
Bandhunta Izzy - 20 Questions: Izzy dropped a new album this week called “Big Izzo” Dope project, I loved every single one of the sampled tracks, my favorite of which is “20 Questions” where he samples 50’s classic “21 Questions” (he musta got one his questions answered). Check out “Big Izzo” and these standouts:
On E
Time Wit U
Hustla Musicc
Jay Rock ft. Anderson .Paak & Latto - Too Fast: This track is super catchy and will for sure be heard a lot for the rest of the year. I can’t think of 3 different Hip-Hop artists to collab but they fit together seamlessly. It has Latin vibes and also the New West Coast, Mustard-esque sound. Anderson handles the hook and tells the ladies to pull over that ass Too Fast (an homage to Trina’s smash hit). This will get played in every club and jiggle joint across the country.
Onsight Deeda - I’m Wit It: Another week, another great find on the Apple Music New Hip-Hop playlist. This week it comes from Cash Money signee Onsight Deeda. The beat is epic and OD promises to make the opps end up missing if they play with him. If the haters let their partners gas them up, they're gonna get deflated when he comes around.
