The Hit List: week 118 (July 24 - July 30)
Tony Touch ft. Dave East & Teyana Taylor - All I Need: Tony Toca linked with 2 multi-hyphenates to flip the Mary J & Method Man Grammy-Award winning smash hit. They had me from the opening seconds, I ran that shit back like Funk Flex. If you love the original, you’ll love this one.
Travis Scott ft. Young Thug - Skitzo: So “Utopia” dropped and helped crash all the streamers (along with Posty’s album). The initial reviews compared it to Yeezus (which it does in fact sample quite a bit) but “Utopia” has its own vibe. I loved the whole project. “Skitzo” with Young Thug may be my favorite but the whole album slaps. It was an instant purchase (and maybe the cheapest album I’ve ever bought on the first day at $6.99). The features are top tier including: The Weeknd, Swae Lee, Future, Drake, Bad Bunny, Beyoncé, SZA, Sampha & more. You’ve already heard this project by now so go run it back, start to finish.
Yo Gotti & DJ Drama - No Fake Love: Gotti is about to drop a Gangsta Grillz tape with Drama and this is the leadup single. Gotti talks that trap talk, that big money talk, and warns the opps that he always got the tool on him. Even though he’s Grammy-nominated, he still gets investigated. You might see him in Forbes, but he’s still one of them boys. He tells his locked down homies to stay strong and be patient (specifically Dugg).
TechN9ne, Conway The Machine, X-Raided & Joyner Lucas - Knock: Tech N9ne dropped a monster project called “Bliss” this week. 25 tracks and an hour and 16 minutes long (most modern projects don’t even reach 45 minutes). He played around in the sandbox and has an eclectic mix of sounds on this one. My favorite track is the flip of Guy’s hit “I Like” called “Things I Like” which was released months ago (I just heard it this week). I’ve also had “Pull Out” on repeat. This track “Knock” has some of the best bars this year from some of the best lyricists on a Boom-Bap beat. The MVP is X-Raided, Strange Music’s own who steals the show. My jaw dropped during his verse. Check out “Bliss” and these highlights:
They Know Meh (with The Popper)
Tell Everyone
Things I Like
Pull Out (ft. Head DA DON)
Red Aura (with Durand Bernarr & Qveen Herby)
Screen (with Jehry Robinson)
Nasty C - Crazy Crazy: Another week, another great find on the Apple Music New Hip Hop playlist. This week it comes from Nasty C whose track “No More” I’ve been bumping for the last month. The haters must be Crazy Crazy if they think that him and his boo won’t make it. He spits to his main lady and encourages her to slide with him and ride out with him. He wants to make sweet love in the morning and is down to hit it however she wants. She can tell her parents she’s in real good hands because he’s a real good man.
Roy Woods - Thought It Was You: OVO’s Roy Woods dropped a new project this week called “Mixed Emotions” after dropping 3 of the tracks as a 3-pack last week (almost like an accelerated rollout or a sampler). I love this project, and my favorite track is “Thought It Was You” which samples Aaliyah’s “If Your Girl Only Knew”. He sings about the disappointment of a woman he was with. She was a great prospect and he thought she was gonna be wifey, but he was sadly mistaken. If you love R&B check out “Mixed Emotions” and these standouts:
Young Boy Problems
Don’t Love Me
Test What I Know
Insecure
Don’t Mind Me
Gas Out The Window
Gucci Mane - Woppenheimer: So it seemed like this started off as a viral tweet noting how Gucci would have taken the release of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer as an opportunity to drop a mixtape called “Woppenheimer”. He said I got y’all and dropped a track (which is going to be on his upcoming project “Breath of Fresh Air”. He raps about people bringing up the past and GuWop questions what they have done for him. He thanks his wife for birthing their children. He remembers being broke and kids making fun of him. Now he pulls up in the finest of whips. He admits he doesn’t do too much reminiscing, he’s focused on the mission.
Soulja Boy - Like This: Big Soulja dropped a new project this week called “Soulja World 3”. The track “Like This” immediately stuck out as it has that classic Soulja vibe. It’s a party track, perfect for the club, radio, and most definitely Tik Tok, and it’s super catchy. Other highlights from “Soulja World 3”:
Waves On Waves
Every Tuesday
Offset & Cardi B - Jealousy: The husband and wife duo linked for what looks like their first track in quite a few years. They had a brilliant rollout with the Jamie Lee Curtis & Offset spoof of that viral James Brown interview and a scripted phone call with Cardi B and Taraji P. The actual track is fire and they both came with their A game over the Three 6 Mafia sample. They go in on the Jealous haters. Cardi & Set are just trying to raise their fam and stack that cheese. Jealousy will eat your heart out so they recommend against it.
Post Malone - Something Real: So we don’t often see two mega-artists drop on the same day but that happened this week with Travis (“Utopia”) & Posty with his new album “Austin”. They are on different labels so it makes sense. I really really love this album and I’m not the biggest fan of Post’s more Pop sound (this album isn’t even categorized as Hip-Hop on Apple Music). “Overdrive” “Speedometer” and “Something Real” got instantly added to my serrato and “Something Real” has Post yearning for something authentic and the track has soulful, gospel-esque background vocals (a choir). In that vein, when listening to “Austin” I could feel the authenticity in the music, Post poured his heart into this one. Do yourself a favor and check out “Austin” and these standouts:
Mourning
Too Cool To Die
Overdrive
Speedometer
Enough is Enough
Buyer Beware
Burna Boy - Big 7: The African Giant is scheduled to drop a new album later this month and this is one of the leadup singles. It has traditional Hip-Hop production and BB starts by saying RIP to Virgil. In his honor he rocks Louis V while he’s sippin 1942. He sips a lil lean and puffs the za to clear his mind. He doesn't like squares in his circle and if he calls you bro, it’s for life. It has summer vibes and I can see this getting a ton of radio play.
CHIKA & Stevie Wonder - GET HERE: CHIKA dropped a new project this week called “SAMSON: THE ALBUM”. Dope project, she displays her lyrical prowess throughout. The closing track is a gem and you don’t hear harmonica on tracks at all anymore (at least I don’t… maybe on some Country tracks). C gets in her motivation bag and talks about endurance and growth. Being chosen and being lonely. She encourages us to move at our own pace and if you keep pushing you’ll eventually GET HERE. Other highlights from “SAMSON: THE ALBUM”:
REQUIEM FOR A DREAM
TRUTH OR DARE (with Freddie Gibbs)
MAD
PLAIN JANE
DELILAH
Yella Beezy - Motion: We got a loosie from Dallas’ own Yella Beezy and it samples the Bad Boys 2 track “Shake Ya Tailfeather” with Diddy, Nelly & Murphy Lee that set the summer on fire when it dropped. He raps about his haters, they ain’t having no motion and he got all the Motion.
Ransom & Nicholas Craven - American Made: Ransom and producer Nicholas Craven dropped an EP this week called “Deleted Scenes 2”. 5 tracks of bars and dirty beats. My favorite is the opening track “American Dream”. It has a soul-sampled beat and finds Ransom wondering about a few things. He’s got heavy artillery and won’t hesitate to use it on a buster. He never participates in slow hustles and he’ll punch through walls with broke knuckles. He sold yay, dropped out of college, and still became one of the best lyricists of our time.
MCVertt, Ferg & Sexyy Red - Face Down: You gotta hear Sexxy Red’s verse on this. She might have mastered the nasty girl Rap. She is sprinting down the path that was trailblazed by Kim, Nicki, Cardi & Meg and this is another feather in her cap. It helps that this track samples 2 Live’s Crew’s “Face Down Ass Up” and it has that popular Philly Bounce sound (with roots in Jersey/Baltimore Club) that Uzi resurrected with “I Wanna Rock”. Ferg brings hella energy too with his signature “Woo!”
BIA - MILLIONS: Queen BIA dropped a new project this week called “REALLY HER” and she’s got hella heavy hitters on it. Every track slaps and the features speak for themselves. My favorite track “MILLIONS” has no features. On it, BIA makes it known that she’s about her bread. And no chump change either, M’s and up. She’s standing on business, flying on jets and never capping. She got her foot on the opps necks and she has no plans to let up anytime soon. Check out “REALLY HER” and these standouts:
DON’T TELL (Ft. Juicy J)
CLASSY (ft. Swizz Beatz)
FOUR SEASONS
LONDON (with J. Cole)
I’M THAT BITCH (with Timbaland)
Remble - Where’s Remble: I saw a tweet that said something to the effect of “What happened to Remble” and he’s more than answered over the past month including his feature on Blxst’s “child of GOD” and this new track aptly titled “Where’s Remble”. On this one, he uses his distinctive flow over an airy snap beat to reminisce and throw mud in his detractors. The video ironically features 2 actors rapping his bars which adds another layer to “Where’s Remble”.
Kota Tha Friend ft. Hello O’Shay - Sunday In Soho: Kota dropped a 3 pack this week called “NY Summer Pack ‘23”. Dope offering, my favorite of the 3 tracks is “Sunday In Soho”. It’s upbeat and has a Dance vibe. Kota is outside with his bae on Sunday in SoHo. He wakes up, cleans up, pops out, then wilds out.
NCognita ft. Cozz - Saturday: Cali’s NCognita is back with a new smooth loosie with Dreamville’s Cozz. She’s getting to the bag and she’s addicted to winning. She knows actions speak louder than words so she would rather show you the fruits of her labor than talk about it. Cozz likes menages and isn’t into wifing. He was humble but now he’s talking that shit. He wants it all and then some.
KenTheMan ft. Kaliii - Kickin In: KTM dropped a new project this week called “Back To 304’n”. It’s packed with party-ready bops. My favorite is “Kickin In” and it’s all about when the liquor hits your system. Casamigos Kickin In, Don Julio Kickin In, 1942 Kickin In (she seems to love her tequila). She starts dropping it low and wanting some more drank. She been making so much dough, people starting to think she won the lotto. She uses a “Get Your Roll On” cadence in the middle with a flurry of bars right after. Other standouts from “Back To 304’n”:
I Love A Freak
Not My Nigga
Sha EK - Invest: NY Driller Sha EK dropped a new loosie this week. He raps over an aggressive Drill beat and describes the opps going out sad when he ups the blick. He celebrates his victory with 2 young ladies.
That Mexican OT, BigXThaPlug & Big Yavo - Hit List: Texas’ ThatMexican OT went viral for his live performance of the track “Johnny Dang'' which is featured on his new album “Lonestar Luchador”. Super dope album with some Texas heavyweights as features. Naturally, my favorite track is “Hit List” and TMOT, Big X, and Yavo all deliver A1 verses. This one is perfect to play while cruising in the whip. Check out “Lonestar Luchador” and these highlights:
Johnny Dang (with Paul Wall & DRODi)
Breannan
15 Missed Calls (with Sploosh God)
Matagorda (with Hogg Booma)
Doechii - Universal Swamp Anthem: TDE’s Doechii flipped UGK and Outkast’s mega hit “International Players Anthem” and if you love the original, and you love bars, and you love women, give this one a listen.
Toure ft. EST Gee - Ain’t Wanna Leave: I wasn’t familiar with Toure but as I was listening to his fire new project “All I Wanted Was Everything” I got acquainted real fast. The melodic delivery, the realness, all of it is captivating. The EST Gee feature is a highlight but honestly the whole project is a work of art. Do yourself a favor and go listen to “All I Wanted Was Everything” top to bottom and make sure you catch these standouts:
All In It
Broken Promises
Genie
Say My Name
Clyde & Bonnie (with Nick Gotti)
If They Was Asking
Unbreakable
Saweetie - Shot O’Clock: Ms. Saweetie got a new boo and dropped 2 tracks this week, one with said boo, YG, and Tyga and this jawn. My favorite of the two is “Shot O’ Clock” which features a beat from London and samples the 90’s super smash “Tom’s Diner”. This one will be a mainstay in the clubs and you’ll definitely hear it on the radio in heavy rotation.
Other Tracks/Projects That Dropped This Week
Trippie Redd - Last Days
Tee Grizzley & Skilla Baby ft. City Girls - Gorgeous (Remix)
