The Hit List: week 119 (July 31 - August 6)
Usher, Summer Walker & 21 Savage - Good Good: Usher went viral this year for his Vegas show (which has got to be raking in the dough). He’s back with a new loosie and brought fellow ATLiens Summer Walker and 21, 21 to the party. This is a catchy radio ready tune about staying cool with your ex. They prolly ain’t getting back together. They won’t be lovers again but he’ll be happy when she finds another boo. They ain’t Good Good but they still good. Summer and 21 add excellent verses and they fit perfectly over the production and offer 2nd and 3rd dimensions to the track.
Yo Gotti & DJ Drama - I’m Out: Yo Gotti dropped a new Gangsta Grillz with DJ Drama. It’s 10 tracks although appears to be a double disc but it’s the same 10 tracks with the 2nd version sans Drama. Dope project, the Moneybagg collab is flames and closing track “I’m Out” is a smacker. It has the chipmunk R&B vocals in the background and finds Gotti rapping about fake love, freeing the homies, and the trappings of fame. He has to keep the tool on him even though he spends millions on security. He keeps pushing through the stress & the pressure and continues to stack the paper.
Lil Bean - Vent: The Bay’s Lil Bean continues to impress. He’s become one of my favorite artists over the past 2 years. He’s dropped multiple projects and top tier loosies like this new track “Vent”. It has elements of a Detroit-type beat and finds Bner talking about his come-up. He used to dream about having a bank roll, a Mercedes and a bad bitty. He kept working with a passion, and took risks, and now he’s living lavish with diamonds, exotic whips, and the bad bitty he always wanted (a few of em to be exact). Everytime he drops it’s hard shit (facts).
DC The Don - Tell Shyanne: Another week, another great find on the Apple Music new Hip-Hop playlist. I’ve had this one on repeat and immediately added it to the Serrato. Wavy beat, DC uses a melodic flow to tell a few people to delete his number. He’s getting blue hundreds and uses the cash to flood his new chick and buy a Maybach. This one’s a certified bop.
Lil Yachty - SLIDE: Big Boat dropped a 3 pack this week with the lead single SLIDE. He lets the opps know that if they want smoke, he got the pistol. He kicks it with one of his tings and when he hits it from the back, he pulls her tracks out. He’s a gentleman so he brought her some new hair. He’ll SLIDE in the (Hell)cat, with his 9, with his main damie, or with his dog. The beat is hypnotic (very Uzi-esque) and Yachty uses both bars and his melodic, falsetto delivery.
Bernard Flowers - Inseparable: I’ve had “Jimmy Butler” by Bernard Flowers in rotation ever since it dropped years ago and was definitely bumping it as he lead the Heat on an improbable run from Play-In Team/8th seed to the NBA Finals this year. When I saw Bernard dropped a new project this week called “Absolutely Gave It 2 Em” I had to give it a listen. Excellent album, full of melodic tunes. My favorite is “Inseparable” which has a club vibe and has BF reflecting on his relationship. They’ve had their ups and downs, but he ain’t ready to let go. He wants to give love a shot and hopes that their chemistry isn’t just lust. She gives him a special kinda feeling and he’s hoping that they become Inseparable. Check out “Absolutely Gave It 2 Em” and these highlights:
Twin
Big Bag
BB King
Hot Box
Spirit God
EZ Mil ft. Eminem - Realest: This track went viral for Em addressing some of his biggest critics and a whole new Generation of fans. EZ Mil is a Shady artist and delivered an A1 Verse btw (he definitely has Em vibes and a lil Tech N9ne with the rapid fire delivery). Em calls out Gen Z for being too young to adequately assess a Hip-Hop legend like himself (you wasn’t there). He does go on to apologize to them collectively at the end of the track (and it’s funny because I thought I heard him say “Shenseea” not “Gen Z” but I put 2 and 2 together when it went viral). He also calls out Hip-Hop Legend Melle Mel (of Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five fame) as Mel previously said the only reason Em is considered on of the GOATs is because he’s White (like he gets bonus points for rapping so well and being White in addition to having a bigger fanbase who fuck with him because Whites have historically been the majority in this country (the Latinos are coming lol)). He calls him out for using steroids too (I laughed). Another person who got a jab, but wasn't mentioned by name, was former Shady/Aftermath artist The Game who said they don’t play Em in the club. Em retorted by saying the only reason they still play him in the club is because he still performs in them (yikes).
Kevin Gates - I Don’t Apologize: Get Em Gates dropped a new loosie this week and it’s a great one. It has a triumphant beat and has Gates encouraging us to keep our heads up and vibrate higher. They labeled him a problem child but he survived the hard times, and fast forwarding to modern times, he’s driving foreigns and smashing dimes. For his success, he will not apologize.
Tyla Yahweh ft. Yung Bleu - Hips Don’t Lie: Tyla dropped a new album this week called “Heart Full of Rage 2”. Dope project that is filled with his signature Emo Rap sound. He’s got a bunch of features and it seems like every feature track slaps. My favorite is “Hips Don’t Lie” with Yung Bleu. Although it shares the title of the Shakira/Wyclef hit, it doesn’t sample that one. It has a nice bounce and TY asks one of his bitties to stay with him tonight. Her Hips always tell the truth and he wants to spend the night with her. He hopes they can sip some drank then she can pop it til he passes out. Other standouts from “Heart Full of Rage 2”:
Touchdown
City of Dreams (ft. Chris Brown)
Lighters Up (ft. Dej Loaf)
Rockstar Nights (ft. Toosii)
1000x
New York Ave
Snoh Aalegra - Sweet Tea: Snoh dropped back to back. After giving us the beautiful ballad “Be My Summer” she’s back again with another top tier tune (album coming soon?). This one is downtempo and starts with beautiful keys. Snoh sings about someone who is so perfect they don’t make sense. It feels like she’s dreaming. Her dreams ain’t sweeter than him (he’s a sweetie pie).
Desiigner - Young N Ballin: Desiigner has dropped two consecutive catchy tracks. After dropping “Timmy Turner 2” last month he’s back with a melodic track. Summer vibes, perfect for the radio, Desiigner raps about poppin bottles in the club til 5 in the morning. He’s Young and he’s Ballin and this attracts all the ladies. Great track to cruise in the whip to.
Marlon Craft - TOO YOUNG: NY MC Marlon Craft dropped a new album this week called “HOMECOURT ADVANTAGE, Vol. 2”. I listened all the way through (no skips) and the lyricism displayed on each track is some of the best of the year. “TOO YOUNG” stood out for the chipmunked vocals/soul-sampled beat. Uptown, downtown, midtown side, Marlon reps for all of NY (and is a shining example of how to be a man of the city). His petty is polished and he calls out the haters (they wasn’t outside). He started on the bench and now he’s an All-Star starter.
Drakeo The Ruler - I’m The Reason: Long live The Ruler! Drakeo’s estate dropped a new track and it has that smooth Drakeo sound. He talks about all his clones & sons. He made all these niggas wanna get they bread up, wanna get a Rollie, and get a foreign. Give credit where credit is due.
Atmosphere - Running With Scissors: Minneapolis rap duo Atmosphere dropped a new album this week called “Sad Clown Bad Dub 2”. Bars and subject matter are A1 and it’s experimental at some points and catchy (I found myself running some tracks back just to digest everything that was said). My favorite track is definitely “Running With Scissors”. Sweet beat with some flutes (I think) and an opening line that encourages us to wrap your jimmy and keep it fresh (Sidebar: I was on the way to get some buns as I was listening. On the 2nd round she tried to stick it in raw but I put a rubber on. Thanks Atmosphere! [this really happened]). Slug continues on with more gems like brushing your teeth, squash the beef, look at the big picture, and keep truth & honor at the forefront of your actions. I wish we would have recited this at the beginning of the school day everyday instead of [redacted].
Doja Cat - Paint The Town Red: Doja is having a hell of a year. From the public outcry about her mate to her getting into it with her fans, she’s been in the spotlight quite a bit recently. She used this new track to address some of that as she is a self described devil and a rebel. The beat on this track is fire and Doja’s bars (chef’s kiss). The imagery in the music video for this one has got people’s panties in a bunch but I think that was the point.
Stormzy - Angel In The Marble: Stormzy dropped an album less than a year ago but he might be dropping another soon. This new track has him talking that big money talk. He went from selling that white to eating foods he can’t even pronounce. He is chiseled like DaVinci and him and his crew are the Black Beatles. He saw the Angel in the Marble and carved it out bit by bit.
Rick Hyde & Black Soprano Family ft. Boldy James - Knock Down: Black Soprano Family in-house Producer (and Spitter) Rick Hyde dropped a new project this week called “LUPARA”. Dope project full of grimy lyrics and boom-bap beats. One of the highlights is “Knock Down” with Boldy James. Another day, another knockdown. Rick’s haters thought he was knocked down but he’s coming for his spot now. He’s got bullets with all his opps name written on them and they all getting Knock(ed) Down. Boldly got drums in the AR for his opps. When it comes to his strips, he’s all about counting his chips, and he got the switch on all his sticks. Check out “LUPARA” and these highlights:
Rick Rhude
Change My High
Streets Ain’t The Same (ft. Benny The Butcher)
Trippie Redd - Left 4 Dead: T Redd seems set to drop a new project soon as this is his 2nd or 3rd loosie in as many months. It’s Emo Rap at its finest. Acoustic guitar sets the mood as Trippie sings about a love lost. She left him for dead and he misses the tricks she used to do in bed. It’s tearing him apart to be without her. She switched so quick, he couldn’t comprehend, and now he doesn’t even wanna fuck around with love.
Lil Skies - Wake Up: We going back to back with the tatted up lightskins. Lil Skies is droppin heavy this year (I smell an album). “Wake Up” is a whole ass vibe (like all of his tracks). Skies been grinding to get his cake up. He stayed down and don’t give a fuck about being famous. He’s gonna stunt for all the niggas who said he was gonna change up. Everytime he walks in the jewelry store he makes sure to buy something for his bro.
Cousin Stizz - Solo: Boston’s Cousin Stizz dropped a loosie this week and it’s undeniably great. It has a funky, wavy beat and Stizz raps about putting in work and doing it for the love. He came up from the dirt, and he’s just trying to stay out the way and stack up with the guys. He also believes that when people show you their true colors, you should believe them. He wants us to understand the world can be ours, but we gotta get go it, and stick to the code.
DJ Premier ft. Westside Gunn & Rome Streetz - Runway: Premo dropped a new collab track with 2 of Griselda’s finest and they fit perfectly on his production. It’s that classic Premier sound with the scratches and boom-bap drums. Rome Streetz delivers a lyrical onslaught and Gunn’s hook it’s super catchy (“Used to wanna be like Miiiiiike…”) then he drops a crazy dope verse. The transitions on the beat sauces this one way up.
Fresco Trey & Einer Bankz ft. charlieonnafriday - Got You: Artist Fresco Trey & Producer Einar Bankz dropped a new collab track with charlieonnafriday this week and it’s a bop. Trey uses a melodic delivery to lay it on his boo thang. Her love gets him higher than the ceiling. He wants her to tell him what she thinks because he’s tired of the illusions. He can’t get enough of her because she’s special. charlieonnafriday poured a lil too much in his cup, now he’s saying “Wassup?” He hits his love interest with a text and if she’s down he’ll pick her up for a date. He’s hoping they can get to know each other and eventually become best friends (and more).
BLP KOSHER, Luh Tyler & Trapland Pat - Quite Frankly: Florida’s BLP Kosher dropped a new loosie with two more of Florida’s finest. Luh Tyler is one of this year’s XXL Freshmen and him and his frequent collaborator Trapland Pat (and BLP) all slide on this silky beat. It has Detroit-type beat elements and the guys take turns burying the beat, no hook required.
