The Hit List: #121 (August 14 - August 20)
Quavo - Hold Me: Huncho dropped off “Rocket Power” this week, a new solo album and the title pays homage to his gone but never forgotten nephew Takeoff. Dope project, with a lot of introspective tracks and top tier features. My favorite track is “Hold Me” (and he eventually dropped a video for it so the label must be fucking with it too). Quay talks about the hard times and just asks his guardian angels to hold him. He talks about losing his nephew and losing his homie. He promises to never let the streets get a hold of him and he’ll also never fold. Check out “Rocket Power” and these highlights:
Patty Cake (with Takeoff)
Where Can I Start
Turn Yo Clic Up (with Future)
Back Where It Begins (with Takeoff ft. Future)
Focused (ft. Young Thug)
Greatness
Lil Tecca & Kodak Black - HVN ON EARTH: Two of the youngest in charge dropped a new loosie this week. It has a wavy vibe. Tecca been working and has had a lot on his plate, but he unwinds with his favorite lady. Melodic chipmunk vocals bridge the verses. Kodak’s shawty always has tights on. He doesn't care too much for pussy, he likes to make a genuine connection.
Jon Batiste ft. Jon Bellion & Fireboy DML - Drink Water: Multi-hyphenate Jon Batiste dropped a new album this week called “World Music Radio”. Most of us know him as the pianist and bandleader on “The Late Show” with Stephen Colbert and as the writers strike stretches into fall, he prolly got a lotta free time on his hands. He put his foot into this project, it’s well-rounded with an eclectic mix of vibes and features. I instantly gravitated to “Drink Water” with Jon Bellion and Fireboy DML (both of whom I already have in the Serrato). This one has some Afrobeats elements and encourages us to take a deep breath, drink water, and calm down when we may feel overwhelmed. You gotta check out “World Music Radio” and these standouts:
Raindance (ft. Native Soul)
Worship
Calling Your Name
Butterfly
Running Away (ft. Leigh-Anne)
Wherever You Are
Larry June & Cardo - The Good Kind: Larry June got with producer Cardo (got wings) to drop a smooth new track. June is on Bag Mode, pushing a Rarri with the Fast Mode. He chillin with a bop on a boat, watching the ocean, eating smoothie bowls. Don’t get it confused, he’s still a street nigga.
EST Gee - THE BIGGEST: Geeski dropped a new album this week called “EL TORO 2” and it might be his best project yet. I like the mix of hard bars and melodic tracks. My favorite is “THE BIGGEST” (not to be confused with his previously released track with 42 Dugg “The Biggest”) This one is about the ladies. He got a stable of baddies and they all with the program. Why, you ask? Because he’s the Biggest, the Realest, the Coldest, the Richest and they know with EST Gee ain’t no limit. They can get The Biggest. Other highlights from “EL TORO 2”:
TUSCAN PERFUME
TOAST
IT IS (ft. Rylo Rodriguez)
FREE DOGGY (ft. 42 Dugg)
NOBODY ELSE (ft. Static Major)
BACK TO A TIME
ANOTHER MOMENT WITH GOTTI (ft. Yo Gotti)
Draft Day ft. Lil Yachty - SUMMER SUPERSTARS: Spitter Draft Day dropped a new loosie with Lil Yachty (who apparently signed him a couple years ago according to the interwebs). The beat is by The Alchemist (say what!?) and has his signature sound. Yachty wakes up in the morning and kicks his slide out the house. He hits Jamaica with 20 bitties to unwind. All his women paint his name on their toes and all his cars are updated. DD took so many losses but now the tables turned, and he’s jumping out the gym. Whatever he wants, he goes and gets. He’s got plays for days.
Leon Thomas - Sneak: Multi-hyphenate Leon Thomas dropped a new album this week called “Electric Dust” full of the kind of soulful songs he's known to perform (and write for others). One of my favorite tracks is “Sneak” which is an ode to the sneaky link. LT asks if he can smash in the daytime while shawty man ain’t home. He knows the kitty isn’t his, but it’s calling him and he wants a taste. Other standouts from “Electric Dusk”:
Slow Down
Love Jones (with Ty Dolla $ign)
Crash & Burn
Breaking Point (ft. Victoria Monet)
Webbie & Tre Savage - Like A Wife: These guys flipped Webbie’s classic track “Bad Bitch” and specifically the part “Like a Bad Bitch” into “Like A Wife” (look at the growth!) She be cooking and cleaning, cleaning and cooking. Pussy so good it makes the guys wanna marry her. Nails done, hair done, and she paid too. This is dedicated to all the ladies in the streets and freaks in the sheets who got their shit together.
Russ - Tunnel Vision: Indie giant Russ dropped a new album this week called “SANTIAGO”. It has a more melodic vibe (not too many of his braggadocious bars on this one). My favorite track “Tunnel Vision” finds Russ spitting some top tier bars about how he’s feeling. Wanting to get right within, wanting to win a Grammy, and his journey of self-improvement. The artist on the hook is uncredited, but her vocals are buttery and she sings about sticking to our decisions, having Tunnel Vision, and never giving up. Go give “SANTIAGO” a listen and don’t miss these standouts:
Fraud
Empty
Enough
Oasis
DJ Sliink, Bandmanrill ft. SAFE - In The Night: I been fucking with SAFE for a minute and he provides the vocals for this Jersey Club track by DJ Sliink & Bandmanrill. SAFE sings to a special lady. How shawty turns that shit, how she backs it up, has SAFE falling in love. Heavy bass, this track is perfect for the club and will for sure get asses shaking. Bandman spits some lovey dovey drill bars because he beats cheeks and shoots niggas too.
Mick Jenkins ft. Benny The Butcher - Sitting Ducks: veteran Chicago artist Mick Jenkins dropped a new project this week called “The Patience”. Dope project full of substance and A1 features. One of the best tracks is the Benny collab “Sitting Ducks”. It has a jazzy boom-bap beat and Mick talks his shit with rhyme schemes that many of his peers could never pull off. Benny hops right in after Mick (no hook) and talks about his rags to riches story and puts the kibosh on rats. He definitely gets some of his luxury life bars off too. Check out “The Patience” and these highlights:
Michelin Star
Show & Tell (ft. Freddie Gibbs)
Smoke Break-Dance (ft. JID)
ROY G. BIV
Mop
Mike Will Made-It fr. Lil Uzi Vert - Blood Moon: So Uzi is supposed to be dropping his followup to the “Pink Tape” soon and it's reminiscent of when he dropped “Lil Uzi Vert vs. The World 2” after “Eternal Etake” then put both projects together and made that the official “Eternal Atake” (Deluxe). This new track was produced by superproducer Mike Will Made-It and I’m guessing it might appear on the new project. The repeated “Woop woop” and the soul sample in the background sauces it up. Uzi uses a quick flow to talk about his luxury life, Margiela clothes and penthouses. He uses a pitched up delivery and calls the opps pussy and according to him, his feet (size) is not an indication of his meat (size) ***super pause***
Dame D.O.L.L.A ft. Ty Dolla $ign & Jordin Sparks - Giant: Future Hall of Famer (and probably future Heat player) Damian Lillard dropped a new album under his rap moniker Dame D.O.L.L.A. The album is called “Don D.O.L.L.A” and he got some of the most talented artists in the game to collab with (including one of my faves and fellow Bay native Rexx Life Raj). My favorite track is this smooth one with Ty Dolla and Jordin Sparks. It has a snap beat and the theme is about having someone to lean on. Who can be a shoulder for a Giant to lean on. For Dame, it’s his wife. He can call on her any time he needs, and she understands him. Check out “Don D.O.L.L.A” And these standouts:
Lillard University
I Ain’t Perfect
Noble (ft. Rick Ross & Sy Ari Da Kid)
Don D.O.L.L.A. - ft. (Rexx Life Raj)
Is It You (ft. Ivory Scott, Christina Mackey & King Sis)
Paid In Full (ft. Tobe Nwigwe)
Judgement Day (ft. Dame D.O.L.L.A)
Back Home (ft. Ivory Scott)
Lil Durk - Fuck U Thought: Smurk dropped a new loosie thats set to appear on the “Almost Healed” Deluxe. Piano keys set it off and The Voice goes into his spin the block bag. He pops opps and smashes smeezes from the back. He unwinds by smoking the za. He puts in hella work and he can go band for band with your favorite artist.
Childish Major - 1st Lady: Childish Major dropped a new EP this week called “1st Lady <3”. Nice 5 Pack, my favorite track is the title track. CM spits about a baddie. She vows to never be a nigga’s first bad bitch (she doesn’t wanna have to teach him the ways). A lame turned her into a savage. Childish is tryna get with her if she’ll have him. He’ll make her come and then she’ll never go.
Ciara - BRB: Ciara dropped a new project this week called “CiCi”. I really enjoyed the album. Lots of catchy radio-ready tracks. My favorite is “BRB” which has a Jersey Club beat and has her yearning for her boo. She doesn't want him to wait too long, and she doesn’t want to be away too long, so she promises to Be Right Back.
Usher - Boyfriend: OK so there’s been a lotta hoopla about this track because Ms. Keke Palmer appears in the video. And she had a very public dustup with her BD over her attending Usher's Vegas show (and her attire). Usher sings that I heard your BF was looking for me? Well you know where he can find me? Where you are. Usher said he gon’ be on ya shawty like white on rice (or brown on rice if you prefer whole grains). I know people don’t like the rollout-y stuff (because it feels inauthentic) but this is a bop.
Big Yavo - Spoon Fed: Texas’ Big Yavo dropped a new album this week called “Proof”. Dope project filled with slaps. My favorite track is “Spoon Fed” (and I immediately added it to my playlist). It has a New Orleans vibe with the “Oh” as BY talks down on the cap ass opps. They had a silver spoon and don’t know when to keep they mouths closed. Yavo came from the bottom, goes through real shit, and has to pick himself out the mud everytime. The lame niggas all the same but he’s different. Other highlights from “Proof”:
Plot
Mocean
Freestyle
Hardy Brothers (with GMF Fatboy)
Rod Wave - Call Your Friends: Rod Wave is back with a heartfelt ballad dedicated to being there for your day ones. There’s a phrase that became popular recently “Check on your strong friends” meaning we don’t know what anyone’s going through even if it looks like they got everything going for them. Rod encourages us to be proactive, call our friends, and ask how they are doing. And if you beefin wit the homie, Rod says life’s too short for grudges, so call ‘em.
Sha Ek ft. PGF Nuk & B-Lovee - Baby: NY Driller Sha Ek dropped a new project this week called “”Defiant Presents: Courtland Over Everything” (with Sped up and Slowed down versions too). My favorite track is “Baby” with fellow drillers PGF Nuk & B-Lovee. It samples Lil Baby & Fridayy’s “Forever” and the guys spit game to their favorite ladies. Of course it has that NY Drill sound, and the opps get some bars too. Also check out “Meds” ft. Spongy Rolla.
Gucci Mane - Broken Hearted: GuWop is set to drop his new album “Breath of Fresh Air” soon (in Woptober to be exact). He dropped what looks to be his 8th leadup single (gotdamn). He talks about losing 2 of his closest homies this year and having to deal with the hurt and pain. He warns the opps that if they run up, they getting done up (and he’s proven this to be true). He uses a melodic, autotune delivery to let us kno what happens in the the dark comes to light so live your life right.
NEMS - PUSSY: So NEMS dropped a new album this week called “RISE OF THE SILVERBACK” and he got extra flagrant on the opening track. He warns that if you get easily offended you should turn the track off (I agree). He advises you to put the earmuffs on your kids then proceeds to call the kids lil pieces of shit (bars). He warns that he’ll punch you dead in the face (pussy) and calls this person’s sister a dick-sucking coke head. You get the gist, it’s wild disrespectful. Check out “RISE OF THE SILVERBACK” and these standouts:
NO FACE (with Scram Jones & Fat Joe)
DIRT (with Scram Jones & Peedi Crakk)
MISSILES
Jessie Reyez ft. Miguel - JEANS: Jessie Reyez dropped a new track this week with Miguel (who should have his own album coming soon). It’s an acoustic track and finds JR telling her main thang that they fit her better than a pair of jeans and fill her up better than a feast. She could never let them leave and it feels like they were custom made for Jessie. Miguel knows he’s doing it right but enjoys the coaching his lady gives him when he’s close to bustin’ that nut (or maybe when she’s super close to O Town). Miggy gets gassed up when she says he’s the best, and he encourages her to say it again and again.
Boosie Badazz - Broken Inside: Boosie has quietly been dropping some fire-ass projects over the past year including the week with “Going Thru Some Thangs” (I think this is his 3rd project in the last 12 months). Boosie is underrated as an artist. I think his online persona rubs some people the wrong way (and some people super fuck with him because of his stances) but I think the music is undeniable. He talks about his trials and tribulations on this project including escaping Death Row, falling out with his daughter, and beating cancer. Super introspective and personal, my favorite track is “Broken Inside” where he talks about the haters who kill his vibe because they’re broken inside. They hate to see Boosie Boo winning but he doesn't let it get to him, he’s got the Lord on his side. Check out “Going Thru Some Thangs” and these highlights:
Ungrateful
Lil Melvin
Preacher Man (ft. Playbwoi The Great)
I Need Some Head
Keep Ya Head Up
DD Osama & Luh Tyler - Pup: NY Driller DD Osama and XXL Freshman Luh Tyler linked for a wavy new track. They talk down on the guys who think they really big dogs, but they really pups. They got that motion, stackin cash to the ceiling. They smashing all the opps ladies, and they don’t mess with the haters who mad to see them up.
Bryson Tiller - NUMB: Bryson Tiller dropped a new project on Soundcloud called “Slum Tiller Volume One”. It reminds me of the music he made when he broke into the game. My favorite track is “NUMB” and it has a chipmunked soul sample and finds BT spitting bars. He ain’t with that fake shit, and he don’t be on that young shit. He keeps his feelings in check for an old flame, and he doesn’t feel anything when he sees her around and on the gram. He’s numb.
KEY! - Catch Me: Fatman KEY! Dropped a new project this week titled “Marquis” which is probably his government name. My favorite track “Catch Me” samples the Surface classic “Happy”. Key spits to his main damie. He left them hoes alone and only has eyes for her. He asks her to catch him as he falls in love and also to not go through his phone. Other highlights from “Marquis”
Hey Intro!
Legit
You Need God (with Tony Shhnow)
Racks Don’t Talk Back (ft. Bear1boss & LongBodyLeo)
Love Like This (ft. ManMan Savage)
Canon - Bend The Whip: Another week, another great find on the Apple Music new Hip-Hop playlist. This week it comes from Chicago artist Canon. The internet is saying he’s a Christian rapper but I couldn’t tell because this track was heat. Canon been authentic from the beginning. He took his time to get his winnings up. He’s handled life dishing out hard knocks and he’s survived them all.
26AR & Rocko Ballin - GOTTA BE: NY Driller 26AR dropped a new album this week called “Still Drenchin”. My favorite track “GOTTA BE” has a triumphant beat with the horns (and of course the NY drill Hi-Hat loop). Rocko Ballin’s melodic hook is catchy AF. 26 is stamped, and if the opps start beef, he’s ending it. He hates weirdos and weird hoes. The haters can’t escape him because he got motion everywhere. Check out “Still Drenchin” and these standouts:
