The Hit List: week 124 (September 4 - September 10)
Joyner Lucas - Seventeen: This bout Joyner’s 17th leadup single for his album. He starts off with an RIP for Mac Miller then talks about the things that he used to pray for when he was Seventeen. Needless to say, they have all come to fruition. The beat is dope with the background vocals and the bounce of the drums. I hope mans drops the album soon.
A Boogie - Did Me Wrong: A Boog dropped a new EP called B4 BOA and it’s a lead up 3 pack to his next album. Super dope offering, my favorite of the three is “Did Me Wrong” where he uses his signature melodic delivery to spit about the last bittie that did him wrong. He takes accountability for the shit he did but it doesn’t change the fact that he feels she did him greasy. It samples that one song (you’ll recognize it when you hear it).
Kid Cudi - Ill What I Bleed: Cudder dropped a new 2 pack (and the streets saying his new project “INSANO” was supposed to drop so this was the makeup for that. My favorite of the two “Ill What I Bleed” has a wavy beat and finds KC using a trippy flow to talk his shit. It’s hard to explain, but to put it simply, it’s a vibe.
Teezo Touchdown - UUHH: Rock Rapper Teezo Touchdown dropped a new project this week called “How Do You Sleep At Night?” and it might be the best project that dropped this week. It’s experimental, he uses a lot of different sounds, including more Rock-ier tracks, some Emo flows, and more Pop-y tunes. My personal favorite track “UUHH” has a Rock sound and a bit of a 90’s R&B bop to it. Teezo puts a shawty at ease. She’s nervous and he’s nervous too, but he knows what he’s going to do. He’s going to take her hand then UUHH, and then UUHH again, and then UUHH some more. That’ll relieve the tension for sure. Check out “How Do You Sleep At Night?” and these highlights:
OK
You Thought (ft, Janelle Monae)
Impossible
Mood Swings
Daddy Mama Drama
Ransom, 38 Spesh & Che Noir - Scape Goats: 3 top tier lyricists hopped on a cinematic beat and absolutely clobbered it. They go back and forth so Spesh spits a few bars then volleys to Ran for a few and back and forth til Che hops on at the end and puts the beat in a coffin.
Haiti Babii - Dead Presidents: After dropping a leadup single (“Yo Baby Mama Ugly”) Cali’s Haiti Babii dropped a new project called “Nuthin 2 Krazy”. Dope project, my favorite track is “Dead Presidents” which samples the Lil Jon, Mystikal & Krayzie Bone smash hit “I Don’t Give A…”. It’s that Murk Music and like Lil Jon does, he shouts out all the sides of his town, North Side, South Side, etc.
Sampha - Only: Streets saying Big Samph got a project on the way. Even if he doesn’t, he dropped some gas this week with “Only”. His distinct voice is the main instrument on this one as he sings about his Only boo. He talks about the ride he’s on and his faith. He don’t wanna judge but he’s gotta save his soul. He’s betting on himself and won’t let desire crush him.
Cam’ron & Styles P - Top of the Pyramids: Killa Cam dropped a new project this week called “The Lost Files Vol. 1” which is probably some tracks he had in the vault that didn’t make his recent projects. My favorite track is “Critics” but also want to highlight the Styles P collab “Top of the Pyramids”. The beat sounds like prime Just Blaze and the guys describe how they’re at the top of the food chain, top of the world, and the Top of the Pyramid.
Killer Mike ft. JID, T.I., & Jacquees - Maynard Vignette: Listen man. Every week I’m pleasantly surprised by a track that drops. 4 artists of this caliber on one track usually is going to be magical (and this one definitely is). This track starts with a sound bite from former ATL mayor Maynard Jackson and Mike starts by calling himself a young Maynard. He raps about real shit, his goals, drops gems, and his vision for us all. Jacquees handles the hook then T.I. goes in over the smooth beat. JID finishes up and I guarantee if you listen to this one, you won’t be disappointed.
Lil Peep & iLoveMakonnen - IDGAF2: RIP Peep! This week "DIAMONDS" dropped, it's a collab album with him and Makonnen. From what I’ve read, they were good friends before Peep’s untimely passing. This album is fire, no skips. It’s one of the few projects this week I listened to all the way through. My favorite track is the catchy “IDGAF2”. Makonnen’s emo “Some nights I wanna die…” hook is something many of us adults can relate to. He continues: “Some nights I don’t give (a fuck)”. Peep’s tortured soul delivery is so Rock & Roll and the Hip-Hop production gives it a special sound.
Busta Rhymes & Coi Leray - Luxurious Life: So Busta Rhymes came up in an era where Coi’s Dad Benzino ran one of the biggest Hip-Hop media magazines, The Source. Their paths crossed recently when Busta won a lifetime achievement award at the BET Hip-Hop awards and Coi performed in his tribute performance (I think she sampled one of his tracks). Well this is their first track together (I believe) and I did not have high hopes going in, but they bodied this track. It samples the Jay-Z & Foxy Brown hit “Ain’t No Nigga” and they go back and forth on their Bonnie & Clyde shit. Tough Tune.
Real Boston Richey - Bubba Man: Florida’s Real Boston Richey (confusing I know) got the Florida A&M football team jammed up a bit when he shot a video in their locker room earlier this year. He dropped a new album this week called “Welcome To Bubba Land”. Dope project, my favorite track “Bubba Man” samples Yung Joc's hit “A Couple Grand” and RBR talks about cheating on his boo (and it being cool), getting money, and getting them bubbas in.
Flo Milli - Chocolate Rain: Flo Milli Shit! While this shares the name with the Tay Zonday viral track, they are not related whatsoever. Flo’s version samples Kelis’ “Milkshake” and has some guitar riffs that give it a futuristic feel. It’s a party track and she wants everybody to go insane and eat the Chocolate Rain (you know what she talm bout).
Tone Stith - Girls Like You: Jersey’s own, Tone Stith dropped a new project this week called “P.O.V.” Seven grown and sexy joints for your late night playlist. My favorite track is “Girls Like You” which finds Tone lamenting two-faced women who play with a niggas emotions. It’s girls like her that fuck it up for everybody else. They be bad for a nigga’s health. They supposed to Ride or Die, but they be telling lies.
Icewear Vezzo - Snowman: Vezzo dropped two tracks this week although “Perfection” may not be an official drop (yet). Snowman has that 2000’s trap sound with a trippy loop in the background. Vezzo, talks about clapping shit and smashing hood rats. He points out how ironic it is that some of the hoes move like niggas and some niggas act like hoes (who are on their period to be exact). [His words not mine, don’t kill the messenger]
M Huncho - of course: UK’s M Huncho dropped a new project this week called “my neighbours don’t know”. He got fellow British heavyweights D-Block Europe and Nafe Smallz to collab, and his melodic delivery made the entire project a great listen. It was hard to pick a favorite, but I love “of course”. It dropped a couple weeks ago, but I heard it for the first time this week, so chill. He lets it be known that he put his faith in the trap so of course he is the plug. And he got the stick in the whip, so relax. Check “my neighbours don’t know” out and these standouts:
where you been?
tell me how you feel
muse
misunderstood (with Nines)
any minute (with Slim)
h2s
Tee Grizzley ft. Chris Brown & Mariah The Scientist - IDGAF: Tee Grizz got in his grown and sexy bag for his new loosie and he got two great R&B artists to assist. It’s a downtempo spiritual cousin of Positive K’s “Got A Man” (their own take on the subject). Tee spits the first verse and Chris & Mariah go back and forth on the hook. The guys know shawty got a man but they don’t give a fuck (hence the title). Mariah gets a verse off to give a woman’s perspective.
DJ Sliink, SAFE - Warrior: Jersey’s own DJ Sliink dropped a new project this week called “Bricks To The 6” which I’m guessing is a reference to his journey from Newark to Toronto (because he has Canada’s SAFE on 2 of the 5 tracks). I love the Bandmanrill collab “Real Hips 2” which samples “Da Dip” but this “Warrior” track… I’ve had “Warrior” on repeat this whole week, and if you’re a fan of Jersey Club you’ll love this and the rest of the project.
NLE Choppa - College Girls: NLE dropped a new ode to the young ladies. There’s a sultry vocal loop in the back and NLE proclaims that college girls are more fun. He’s polyamorous and loves to have conversations with his college bitties while they’re all tripping on shrooms. They talk about last semester and even though they have exams coming up, they focus on NLE.
38 Spesh & Conway The Machine ft. Elcamino - Been Through: Spesh and Conway dropped a new collab project called “Speshal Machinery”. All the boom-bap heads will love this one. My favorite track is the Elcamino collab “Been Through” where the guys talk about their come ups and all the things they’ve been through including all the gangsta shit they into.
Mike & Keys x Guapdad 4000 - What You Gon Do: Production Duo Mike x Keys (formerly known as The Futuristiks) dropped a new project this week called “The Paris Tapes”. Super dope project. My favorite track is 1 of the 2 Gupadad collabs “What You Gon Do”. The bass knocks and Guapdad’s smooth delivery and the high-hat loop gives it a jazzy, funky sound. Guapdad asks shawty What You Gon Do for me? He wants her to prove that she’s worth it because he’s in the mood, and he only messes with the best of the best. Other highlights from “The Paris Tapes”:
Blanket (with LARRENWONG)
Popular (with Guapdad 4000 & Jairus Mozee)
All Night Long (with Thurz & Buddy ft. Huey Briss)
Mark Battles - Up: Mark dropped one of my favorite tracks of the year a few weeks ago with “Used to Be” and now he’s back with a new loosie. He tells the opp to hold Up and come and pick his girl Up (because Mark just beat cheeks). He had to get his dough Up and after he cops a new whip he always picks his bro Up.
Apollo Brown & Planet Asia - Stones: Producer Apollo Brown and Rapper Planet Asia dropped a new project this week called “Sardines”. Dope project, if you like lyricism and that 90’s NY Hip-Hop sound, you’ll love this one. My favorite track is “Stones”. It has a soul sample with some excellent strings and horns. PA spits about real shit. He gives advice and puts down the wicked system. He knows responsibilities can only be handled by discipline. And on the road to success, ain’t no shortcut, you gotta put that hard work in. Other standouts from “Sardines”:
Get The Dough Off
Wizardry (ft. TriState)
‘88 S-Curl (ft. Ty Farris)
Can You Believe It
Peezy, Larry June & Money Man - Fashion Week: Detroit, The Bay and The A all on one track. The beat samples that one song (you’ll know when you hear it). All 3 guys got the drip. Gold presidential like Master P. Rick, Louis, Goyard. The exclusive jackets they got on make it look like they just came from Fashion Week.
SBR Peezyy - Rain: SBR Peezyy (not to be confused with Peezy or OMB Peezy) dropped a new project this week called “Elevation”. The standout track to me is “Rain” which samples the New Edition classic “Can You Stand The Rain?” SBR spits some introspective bars and hopes for prosperity for his homies even though they be wildin. He knows it’s hard to make it out the hood but he had to Elevate, and now he’s trying to pave the way for others.
YOUNG JR ft. Philthy Rich, Peso Peso & Sauce Walka - Real is Rare: This turned out to be one of my favorite songs of the week and it’s off YOUNG JR’s new project “Top Shotta” which also dropped this week. The beat drew me in with the soul sample, the snaps, and the guys spitting bars about the come up. Having to sacrifice and get it out the mud. At the end of the day, they know Real is Rare, and they want to continue to stack paper while dodging the fake shit.
Curren$y & Black Cobain - Out The P: Curren$y and his Jet Life crew dropped a new compilation project this week called “Season Opener”. There are quite a few fire tracks on there. My favorite is “Out The P” with Hot Spitta and Black Cobain. They rap about drankin and smoking. Roll another J. They kept it real, and people still got shit to say. This is one to cruise to with the windows down. It’s a vibe.
madeinTYO & 24 Hrs - Save Yours: Real life brothers madeinTYO and 24Hrs (formerly Royce Rizzy) dropped a new track this week. “Save Yours” has that new R&B sound and finds the guys spitting about chicks who broke their heart to Save hers. They just want a genuine connection and if that’s not possible, they’re moving on no matter how much it hurts.
22nd Jim & Babyface Ray - Money: The Bay and Detroit have been connecting a lot (including earlier on this list with Peezy and Larry June). I think both locales are known for keeping it Player so it seems the artists just mesh well. Well the connection is back again with 22nd Jim & Babyface Ray’s new track “Money”. This track is what that money sound like. Money talks, bullshit walks, and the guys talk that Money Talk on this one. The beat is crazy and both Ray and Jim slaughter it.
Eli Fross - Bonnie & Clyde: NY Driller Eli Fross dropped a new track this week dedicated to the fairer sex. He asks shawty to tell him what’s up. He’s trying to show her something different, all them other niggas dumb so he suggests she kick it with him. She ain’t never switch up, that’s why he fucks with her. It sounds like it interpolates “I Need A Girl Pt. 2” and it’s a great, modern, gangsta love song.
Other Tracks/Projects That Dropped This Week
Cardi B & Megan Thee Stallion - Bongos
Vedo - Split
Tinashe - BB/ANG3L (Album)
