The Hit List: week 125 (September 11 - September 17)
Nas & Hit-Boy - Blue Bentley: Nas and Hit & Boy bookended their legendary collab series which started with “King’s Disease” and overlapped with the Magic Trilogy, the last installment “Magic 3” dropped this week. The album is a lyrical masterclass over some of the best production we’ve got this year. I’ve had “Blue Bentley” on repeat all week. Nas raps about having 2 tings in the same city and they’re both vying for his attention. Rich nigga problems. His life is most certainly litty.
Drake & SZA - Slime You Out: From the first couple bars, you can tell Drizzy is getting in his Toxic bag. The melodic bars give it a certain sauce that bars wouldn’t have, and I was hooked from the beginning. SZA been on a roll from her last album to her feature on Travis’ “Utopia” (best song on there IMO) and she gives a woman’s perspective on this one to balance out Drake’s initial uppercut. If “For All The Dogs” is gonna be more of this, I know what I’ll be listening to the rest of the year.
Sleepy Hallow ft. Fivio - BWV: The Winner’s Circle artist dropped a new track this week called “Boy Meets World” and it’s not only my favorite drop of the week, it’s one of my favorite albums of this year. The melodic flows, the subject matter (the ladies) and the samples. I run to this project everytime I’m in the whip. “Self Control” might be my favorite but this “BWV” track which samples SWV’s classic “Weak” is right up there at 1B. Do yourself a favor and check out “Boy Meets World” and these standouts:
Driver's Seat (Intro)
Damn
Cash & Chow
All The Way
Self Control
Rod Wave - Checkmate: Rod Wave dropped a fire new album called “Nostalgia”. I listened to it all the way through and if you love his music, you’ll love this one. “Checkmate” is my favorite track. It sounds like it interpolates New Edition’s “Can You Stand The Rain” and Rod reminisces about love. He’s standing on business and he knows life is like a chess game. You gotta make your next move your best move.
J Balvin, DJ Khaled & Usher - Dientes: This is a Khaled track if I ever heard one. It’s a flip of Usher, Ludacris & Lil Jon’s Club smash “Yeah” and the vocals are provided by one of the biggest Latin artists in the world J Balvin. This one is even clubbier than the original (especially with the Latin twist). It’s gonna be in heavy rotation on the radio. The track title “Dientes” means teeth I think (and obviously the lyrics are en Español).
Diddy Jacquees & Fabolous - Pick Up: Puff dropped his long awaited R&B project this week (his 1st solo album in 17 years I believe) and he got everybody out. From Babyface to 21 Savage, Ty Dolla (on 2 tracks) to Mary J. Blige, he got the heavyweights to lend their vocals to this Top Shelf album. I love the track “What’s Love” with NOVA WAY and this Jacquees and Fab collab is special. Jacquees might be the most underrated vocalist of this generation. He carries the load and Fab gets in his lovey-dovey bars bag (which he’s been doing effortlessly since Trade It All - also with Puff).
Offset - FAN: Offset is back with another solo single (with a video to boot). The video takes its inspiration from Michael Jackson’s Thriller and the track is about kicking the lames out your circle. If they want smoke, it’s up. He says fuck them niggas and them bitties, everybody. Track is a bop (especially when the beat finally drops). It has a Three Six Mafia vibe to it.
Vic Mensa ft. Common - Southside Story: The Chicago artist dropped a new album this week called “Victor” and it’s one of the best albums of the year. The lyrics, the subject matter, the production, the features, all of it comes together to create a sonic motion picture that details Vic’s journey and where he’s from. “Southside Story” really stood out to me as it painted a picture of Chicago and what it was like to grow up there. I could vividly imagine everything Vic rapped about and having Chi-town OG Common on there really made this track special.
Denzel Curry & Kenny Mason - SKED: Two of the most amped rappers got together on this one. I think Denny’s dropping a project soon (so sayeth Apple Music). The title of this one is a phonetic spelling of “Scared” and obviously he’s calling out his pussy ass opps for being SKED.
Killer Mike - GET SOME MONEY: Killer Mike dropped the Deluxe to his most recent project “Michael” this week. 4 new tracks and he got some of Georgia’s finest to feature including T.I., J.I.D., Young Nudy & Jacquees. My favorite of the 3 album cuts (MAYNARD VIGNETTE was released in the lead-up) is a featureless track “GET SOME MONEY” and the message is simple: Get ya cake up!
Rexx Life Raj & Dame D.O.L.L.A. - Hook Mitchell: 2 of the Bay’s Best linked for a loosie (after Raj was just featured on Dame’s “Don D.O.L.L.A.” album last month). The title pays homage to Bay Area Streetball Legend Demetrius “Hook” Mitchell and the message is simple. The difference between them and a lot of guys is that they kept going. Life got hard but they pressed forward. And now they’re legends in The Bay like Hook Mitchell.
Nasty C - Endless: African artist Nasty C dropped a new album this week called “I Like It Here”. Super dope project, I loved the eclectic mix of sounds. I really gravitated toward the Afrobeats tracks including this one “Endless”. The vibes are Endless and timeless. Nasty C takes the word Love and redefines it. He sings to his bae. His heart is hers if she can find it. He spits some bars about his harem, globetrotting, and being a role model. The sax and the strings really sauce this one up and it almost feels like an Afrobeats symphony.
Earl Sweatshirt & Alchemist ft. Vince Staples - The Caliphate: The two Odd Future Alums/Affiliates linked for the new loosie. This might be the most on-beat I’ve heard Earl rap in a while and the beat and flow is not something we usually hear Vince on but he smoked it. Tough Tune.
Jdot Breezy & Lil Poppa - Love Yourself: JDot Breezy & Lil Poppa dropped a new project this week called “ENJOY THE SHOW”. The closing track “Love Yourself” is a standout. Lil Poppa kicks it off with a melodic flow and bares his soul to his main lady. Jdot Breezy spits to his ex and lets her know that he’s doing fine by himself. The guys let them know they should Love themselves before they settle again. They recommend therapy and meditation to help the ladies work through their pain.
RJmrLA & DJ Drama - Buckle Up: After Drama dropped a Gangsta Grillz tape with G Perico earlier this year, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him double back to Cali for a full project with RJ. “Buckle Up” has the new West Coast sound mixed with the classic G-funk sound. RJ raps about cruising around LA with women and making sure he stays on his toes because the bangers is still banging. He got his bread right and he will pipe your wife.
Cleo Sol - Old Friends: Songstress Cleo Sol dropped a new project this week called “Heaven” and it’s a masterclass in R&B/Soul. Old Friends was my instant favorite. She talks about a love lost and it’s she hates that it’s over, but it’s over. Years have gone by but she still cries over mans and how he played with her emotions. The keys give it a ballad feel and this is one of the few songs in the whole time (almost 3 years) I’ve been running this website that has 0 drums.
Devvon Terrell - Make It Last: I saw this track on a list of drops from the week and I don’t know what made me check it out but I’m glad I did. It has an island bounce to it and Dev tells shawty he wants to take her around the world and get her some stamps in her passport. He got bread and he wants to link up and make it last. He promises she can have anything she wants from him.
TrapSosa - Never Ending: TrapSosa dropped a new EP this week called “Like Me”. My favorite track is the opening track “Never Ending”. It has that new Florida bop to it and TrapSosa has that new Florida flow to match. He raps about his family, and climbing from the bottom to getting that money now. He leveled up and if anyone tries to take his chain, they gonna have to bust they gun. He encourages us all to buy our mom a house before she leaves the earth. I like his Hi-Chew bar (one of the GOAT candies) and it features Nipsey on the outro. Tough Tune.
Phora - PTSD: Phora dropped a new project this week called “Lucky Me”. He does some singing and some rapping throughout. My favorite track “PTSD” has him spitting bars about some real shit. He’s got PTSD because he’s been betrayed more than a few times. People close to him be getting jealous. Chicks turn they back on him. He’s just trying to get paper and doesn’t care about the fame. He encourages us to leave the matrix, glow up, and then come back and reign.
Ransom & Raz Fresco - Cinque Campi: Ransom on a roll. Dude dropped bout 10 albums this year alone (maybe not that many). He’s back again and this time it’s a collab project with Raz Fresco (with all tracks produced by Nicholas Craven). My favorite track “Cinque Campi” is a downtempo track that sounds like a live band is playing and has Raz and Ran spitting gritty bars. No hook required. It’s a bit boom bap but it’s a whole ass vibe.
Cash Cobain & MCVERTT - Messy: Cash Cobain dropped a new album this week called “Pretty Girls Love Slizzy” and it’s one of my favorite drops of the week. It was hard to pick a favorite track but I went with “Messy” because I’ve had it on repeat. It has a 90’s Quiet Storm vibe to it mixed with a Jersey Club drum loop. Cash uses a melodic flow to let his shawty know that he’s lit and he’s ready to get Messy (by putting his pole in her hole). He spits about all the ways he be piping her up and piping her down. Check out “Pretty Girls Love Slizzy” and these highlights:
Rump (ft. Chow Lee)
Not No Xanax 2 (ft. Chow Lee)
Nice N Slow
In The Morning (ft. FLEE)
Lil Yachty & Despot - Rain: Boat dopped a new wavy track with Despot. It has a minimalist beat with a chant loop and a xylophone loop. It has a melancholy feel, and Yachty asks us to let him be because he can’t stand the rain. Despot spits from his soul and raps about nobody witnessing his ascension and people doubting him. He plans on making all the doubters regret every word they uttered.
Tobi Lou & Farada ft. Young Thug - Cobra: So Tobi Lou & farada dropped their 2nd project of the year a week or two ago. They then added a track, changed the title, then re-released it. Now, this new version adds 2 new tracks (including this collab with Thugger) and also a new title (it’s kinda like a Deluxe EP). Any chance we get for new Thugger music, we better savor, because it may be a minute before we get something new from him.
SCY Jimm ft. BLP Kosher - Ain’t Original: Florida Men SCY Jimm & BLP Kosher dropped a new loosie this week and it’s a certified bop. It’s one of the last songs I listened to this week and usually I get music-fatigue and half listen but this one caught me from jump. It has that new Florida sound (both the beat and their flows). They threaten the opps and reminisce about the grind. They stand on all 10 and even a blind man can see that their opps are pussy. All bark, no bite.
Cousin Stizz - Never Enough: Cousin Stizz dropped a 3 pack this week. My favorite of the three is “Never Enough” which has a kind of classic, summertime Cali sound. He raps about his main damie and how she rolled him a double blunt. He doesn't know if it’s love or lust sometimes but he loves running up in them guts.. He gets champagne and cabanas and it’s all for her.
KILLY - No Saving: Killy dropped a new album this week called “K3”. I loved the opening track “LOOK AT WHAT WE STARTED” with his late friend SEGA. “No Saving” really stood out to me. It has an epic beat (almost like the soundtrack to an old school Nintendo game). He says there’s No Saving him. He’s a free bird and his life is like a movie. He pops models and he started with a premonition and now that he ran it up, he switched up his conditions.
