The Hit List: week 126 (September 18 - September 24)
Doja Cat - Agora Hills: Doja dropped a new album this week called “Scarlet”. She’s had many viral moments in the leadup and none of them prevented her from making one helluva an album (it’s fire ladies and gentleman). “Go Off” was my favorite album cut until I heard Agora Hills (and the people seem to be fucking with it heavy too). She seamlessly goes from bars to a melodic delivery and she gives it to you straight no chaser all throughout the album. Check it out.
Brent Faiyaz - WY@: Brent dropped a new track and it’s a bop. Wavy vibes, Brent be doing shit he really shouldn’t be doing, for real. But he still be coming through for real (he promises this will be his last time). Some shawty delivers some spoken word in spanish (it’s sexy, I got hard). Brent knows shawty ain’t no good for him, but she feels so good when he’s in them sugar walls. He wants to quit, but he finds himself texting her WY@.
Lil Tecca - Want It Bad: Thank You Tecca! Lil T dropped a new album called “Tec”. It’s his signature sound top to bottom, so if you like what he’s dropped previously you’ll love this one. “Want It Bad” stood out for the island vibes and Tecca talks about a shawty who he’s been having static with. He’s moved on, but she still hits him up to tell him she Want It Bad. He’s good on her though, he’s gonna see how long the money lasts her and she’ll know what’s up when him and his new boo roll right past her.
Lil Gotit - Dr. Martin: Gotta be honest, when I saw Georgia native Lil Gotit dropped a new track called “Dr. Martin” I thought it was a reference to MLK Jr but it turns out he’s walking on the moon in his Doc(tor) Martens (the boots). I’ve had this one on repeat and it’s perfect to cruise in the whip to.
Nick Grant - BRAVO: The barsmith dropped a new project called “SUNDAY DINNER” this week. Dope album, “BRAVO” is my favorite track and Nick talks about real shit over the jazzy beat. He talks about his father’s addiction and subsequent death. Growing up poor with roaches. Having to grind to become a professional rapper and having to dodge the haters and biters. He gives himself a round of applause (BRAVO) for making it out.
Jean Dawson & SZA - No Szns: This is the smoothest track to drop this week. Acoustic guitar carries the track and Jean belts his heart out. SZA sings about her summer fling and now yearning for his warmth in winter. For Jean and SZA (and their tings) ain't No Szns, everyday is Spring. Everyday is Everyday.
22nd Jim ft. 03 Greedo - Wanna Win: 22nd Jim dropped a new project this week called “Sleeve Music”. Dope project, my favorite track is this Greedo collab “Wanna Win”. Bouncy beat, Jim running plays with precision and don’t fuck with no basic bitches. He came from the bottom and only few make it (he did). He knows if you really want it, you gotta go take it. Greedo sliding on some Forgiatos, trappin wit his friends. He’s doing whatever for the paper cuz he just Wanna Win.
Moneybagg Yo & Sexyy Red - Big Dawg: This one’s gonna get hella play on the radio and in the clubs. St. Louis-Memphis CMG connection on this Down South trap track. Sexy want a Big Dawg she don’t want no lil ass nigga. If you ain’t got a bag, don’t even holler. Moneybagg is the largest and it don’t get no bigger than him. He got poles, designer clothes and luggage, and exotic whips. Everything a ghetto Barbie could want.
Shitty Boyz - Fun & Games: BabyTron and his crew ShittyBoyz dropped the 3rd and final of their Trifecta series this week “Trifecta 3: The Finale”. Fitting it ends on the 3rd one (being it’s called Trifecta and there’s three of them). I’ve had “Fun & Games” on repeat because the uptempto beat and the braggadocious (and sometimes humorous) bars make you wanna listen again and again.
Lola Brooke & Bryson Tiller - You: Pint Sized spitter Lola Brooke linked with Young Tiller for this Flip of Foxy Brown and Blackstreet’s “Gotta Get You Home”. Lola’s voice and delivery are similar to Foxy’s so it really feels like the original. I loved the bar she uses from Don’tcallmewhitegirl’s viral video (one hand on Neck, one hand on frontal). Bryson delivers the hook and describes all the things he wants to do to (You). She’s the only one for him and he lets it be known through his actions (he be eating ass).
2Rare - Lady Cop: XXL Freshman and Philly native 2Rare dropped a new album this week called “Truth or Rare” and it’s a gem. He’s become the king of the Philly Bounce (the resurrected Jersey Club sound) and he’s also been a master at sampling hits from the 90’s and 00’s. While my favorite track doesn’t (seem to) sample a track, it’s a spiritual descendant of Wayne’s “Mrs. Officer”. He’s driving down I-95 when he gets pulled over by a Lady Cop. They start vibing and he asks her for some domeski. He promises to keep it on the low, he won’t tell.
Jay Loud - Inna Mood: Another week, another great find on the Apple Music New Hip-Hop playlist. This week it comes from Indianapolis' Jay Loud with “Inna Mood”. Beat crazy, Jay ain’t looking for a shawty, he’s looking for a friend. He hits the party, sees a cutie and lets her know he’s tryna bust all in them guts, no strings attached. He can get her Inna Mood if she’s down. She was smoking that Reggie but if she rolls with Jay she’s gonna be smoking that Loud.
Noodah05 - Old Phone: Nooda05 dropped a new album this week called “Bigger Now”. I had never heard of him but there were not too many projects dropping this week so I listened to all of them. I enjoyed “Bigger Now” and especially the track “Old Phone” which samples and takes its title from Drake’s smash hit “Marvin’s Room”. This one is uptempo and he raps about an old flame. He says fuck the nigga she wit now. He ain’t bitter, he just tryna stack paper and not crash out.
Girl Talk, Wiz Khalifa & Big K.R.I.T. - Eurostep: This group of gents dropped an album last year and they may be coming with another after dropping this smooth loosie. “Eurostep” has the guys showing us how they feel nowadays. When they ball they Eurostep through the lane. They boarding private planes and their checks don’t leave, they coming in. Track is a whole ass vibe.
Money Man - Calculated: Money Man dropped a new album this week called “Catch Me If You Can”. The Indie king has carved out a lane and the beats are always A1. He’s always gonna give you scammer anthems like “Lil Nigeria”. My favorite track “Calculated” finds Money Man using his signature flow and offering words of wisdom (“Investments, you gotta shape your environment") but also flexing his material things and the things they bring (mainly the big booty bitties). He’s a genius and that’s why he’s Calculated.
Millyz - Passion: Barsmith & Jadakiss protege Millyz dropped a new track this week. He opens up his heart on this one. He went through a dark phase, and made dark music. He pours his soul into the music so his real life pain will bleed into the art. He knows things change when you get your cake up, but he’s dedicated to his craft so the music will always be top tier.
summrs - Top Off/House Arrest: summrs dropped a new project this week called “What We Didn’t Have” and it’s his 3rd project this year (man puts in that work). My favorite track “Top Off/House Arrest” has a very intricate beat, there’s a lot going on and it reminds me of one of my favorite Chief Keef songs “Homie”. summrs raps about all the money he’s made and his dimepiece shawty. He’s in VIP in the club and the haters shouldn’t be jealous, they should go put in that work and run the money up too. The 2nd part of the track “House Arrest” has a similar vibe and finds summrs coming off House Arrest and spinning the block on the opps. He’s got real diamonds with real clarity and Louis V everything.
De Royce - She Wanna Party: This week we got another banger from the Apple Music New Hip-Hop playlist. This one comes from De Royce and it samples two hit songs. The beat is a re-rock of Modjo’s “Lady (Hear Me Tonight)” and then De Royce uses “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” as the refrain on the hook. Super dope track, I’ve had it on repeat all week (I’m a sucker for a sample).
