The Hit List #13: (July 19 - July 25) [2021]
EST Gee ft Lil Durk - In Town: CMG signee, EST Gee, released his debut album this week, “Bigger Than Life or Death”. On this track, Gee and Durk warn the opps that they will be shot if they cross the line and the only way they’ll survive is if they’re not In Town. Durk also puts an eighth of lean in a Mystic in remembrance of King Von. You may need to do the same to ease some pain. Other dope tracks from the album:
5500 Degrees (ft. 42 Dugg)
Bigger Than Life or Death
Sky Dweller
Price Tag
Run N 2 Me (ft. Yo Gotti)
Capitol 1
Real Reason
No Friends (ft. Yo Gotti & 42 Dugg)
The Weeknd x Belly x Young Thug - Better Believe: One of my favorite drops of the week. These three on this track is the definition of synergy, the whole greater than the sum of its parts, and the parts are great. On a Zaytoven beat, The Weeknd kicks it off, fighting demons, expressing loneliness but then hitting one of his bitties for a threesome. His side chick pressing him but he chilling. He gon’ die on top and we better believe it (we do). Belly, a self-described Young Dirty Bastard talks down on lying ass rappers and describes his Maybach Mercedes to the normies then invites a young lady to “swallow his cockiness”. Thugger finishes, talking about all his watches (Patek, Audemars) fucking off-mattress (he’ll fuck anywhere) better believe Young Thug is getting money and gettin his willy wet.
Yung Bleu ft. Jeezy - Shoe Box: Alabama crooner Yung Bleu released his new album this week titled “Moon Boy”. On this one he calls on Jeezy to lace this smooth track about smashing and stacking cash money just in case you gotta go on the run and especially if it’s dirty money. The guys’ advice is to put it in a shoe box. I’d also like to add before putting it in a shoebox, it’s best to vacuum seal it so the oxygen doesn’t cause the paper to disintegrate. Also from “Moon Boy”:
Die Under the Moon (ft. John Legend)
Tired of You (ft. H.E.R.)
Beautiful Lies (ft. Kehlani)
You’re Mines Still (ft. Drake)
Baddest (ft. Chris Brown & 2 Chainz)
Ghetto Love Birds (ft. A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie)
Royce Da 5’9” - Silence of the Lambda: One of the highlights of this week was the Royce Da 5’9”, Lupe beef. Apparently these gentlemen had a podcast going for some months, but they constantly beefed over major issues and it culminated in them going after each other on wax (or should I say tracks...ain’t no more wax). Royce’s track had the better beat and would probably be considered the better song by most but Lupe’s was a better diss track. Royce goes in and if you watch on Youtube it has all the lyrics in the vid. One of my favorite bars is when he said some shit about Lupe having little teeth and hella gums. I was dying! I knew this wasn’t a joke when he dropped that line.
Lupe Fiasco - Steve Jobs: Not to be outdone, Lupe ethered Royce with a 6 minute assault. I’ve only heard Lupe this mad when talking about record execs and labels. You gotta listen to this track, listen to Royce’s first then this one, then you tell me who won. I see them, they run... Wait this is not that beef, but it did result in Lupe saying he’s done with that pod and podding in general. I wonder if the guys will ever peace it up.
Dave - In The Fire: The UK spitter released his new effort “We’re All Alone In This Together” this week and it’s a masterpiece. I’ve been following Dave for some years now and this is his most complete body of work. He gets introspective about his life, what it’s like to be an immigrant in England, knife violence, the conflicting perspectives in relationships and hella other shit. I damn near listed the whole album below but “In the Fire” was one of my absolute favorite tracks. Dope beat, a Kanye-esque soul sample and A+ features (is that Fredo I hear? And that sounds like Giggs..) this one’s an absolute smash. Other Tough Tunes from “We’re All Alone In This together”:
We’re All Alone
Verdansk
Clash (ft. Stormzy)
Three Rivers
System (ft. Wizkid)
Lazarus (ft. Boj)
Law of Attraction (ft. Snoh Aalegra)
Survivor’s Guilt
Kodak Black - Senseless: Kodak’s a blonde now. He must be Super Saiyan cuz ever since he got out, he been setting the booth on fire. Nice lil bop here with a pan flute weaved in the beat. Bill describes his daily goals: raw sex, hit a lick, then a shopping spree at the mall. Smoke some Zaza then hit McDonald’s (and hopefully not get shot at this time).
Khalid - New Normal: After his breakout multi-platinum album “Free Spirit” the Texas singer is back with more heat for your head top. He released “New Normal” this week. Although he cut the fro situation he had going on and dyed his hair blue, the music is still fire. He sings to a lady friend about adapting to the New Normal. He prolly broke up with her but he’s like “You’ll be aight yo.” He tells her she’ll find her way amidst changing seasons. Soulful, upbeat with drums and strings this will be on the radio a lot (I’ve heard it all over Sirius already) be prepared.
BigWalkDog ft. Big Scarr - Vert: New 1017 back at it again. I don’t know if I’ve said this yet, but they have a No Limit-esque run going on where one of their artist drops a track every week, and it’s fucking genius. Not just because you can flood the streets with your brand but you bring awareness to new acts. BigWalkDog is bubbling in the streets right now. It reminds me of Moneybagg when he started heating up. This one is about whips, pulling up in the Vert, shawty see you and she gotta have you. Moral of the story: Keep ya ride clean and they’ll always be somebody who wanna hop inside.
Chiiild - The Best Ain’t Happened Yet: So apparently Chiiild is a group, they’re Canadian and now I feel like I did when I found out dvsn is a group. I think there’s one guy who’s the singer though… We’ll know more when they blow all the way up because they most definitely will! They released (what is probably) their debut album, “Hope For Sale” this week and it’s a breath of fresh air. I loved “The Best Ain’t Happened” yet, an optimistic song that motivates us all to keep going because the best is yet to come. Also check out these other tracks from “Hope For Sale”:
Sleepwalking
Weightless
Awake (ft. Mahalia)
Eventually
Wasting Time
500Raxx ft. Tyga - Dump Truck: West Coast vibes on this strip-club, club-club banger. 500 Raxx asks shawty to back it up like a dump truck. Tyga’s a master of tracks like this and slides in perfectly. I recommend checking out the video too!
Leon Bridges - Magnolias: Leon Bridges dropped a new album this week called “Gold-Diggers Sound” which is ironic because his album is what I saw as I repeatedly refreshed the iTunes Store to see if Kanye’s “DONDA” dropped (it did not…) This some smooth shit, he tells his bae she smell like fresh cut magnolias, and he wanna spoil her. Throughout the album Leon uses imagery and metaphors that probably lead to him smashing way more cheeks than your boy. But ima use this one with my shorty, it’ll get her in the mood for sure (I hope…) Other standouts from “Gold-Diggers Sound”:
Born Again (with Robert Glasper)
Motorbike
Details
Sho Nuff
Bizzy Banks - My Shit: Violins lace this drill beat and then Bizzy gets busy. NY drill beats sound super similar but this one stands out with its haunting strings. Bizzy released a project this week called “Same Energy”. Check it out.
Sada Baby - Remember: The Detroit MC has been on an upward trajectory the last couple years and saw his stock rise when Nicki hopped on the Remix for his smash hit “Whole Lotta Choppas”. This that classic Sada, his gravelly delivery over a bouncy “Detroit-type” beat. He sips lean, pays his respects to The Lord, and warns the opps on this one. He hangs around illegal immigrants and rich homies because he doesn’t discriminate and can mesh with any crowd.
Dave East & Harry Fraud ft. Benny The Butcher - Uncle Ric: A track with Dave East, Benny The Butcher over a Harry Fraud beat sounds exactly how you’d expect it to sound. Grimy NY shit. Ya uncle’s type of music. Not my usual vibe but this one goes hard. The Butcher coming nigga! He came alright (just like Nutty Nick nutted on my old bae… She belong to the streets now, whatever). A1 verse by Benny and his flow is a perfect match for Harry Fraud production. Tough Tune.
Smiley ft. Drake - Over The Top: I first heard Smiley when he released a song called “In My Zone” earlier this year with a pretty great video. He’s back at it, this time with Drizzy in tow. With TayKeith on the beat the Canadians describe their extravagant, Over The Top lifestyle to us normies.
Alina Baraz - Alone With You: Some sexy shit for your bedtop. Alina urges her boo to take a ride through town, see the sights, smoke a lil, and vibe under the moon. She’s tryna cheer dude up, and with her voice, I’m guessing mans is down. I know I’d be! Dope track.
Sheff G ft. Polo G - On Go: Double G on this one and I ain’t talking Gucci. Sheff G is one of the most underrated artists right now. He been cooking up heat on the low and his stock is rising, especially when he’s got one of the hottest out right now, Polo G, to jump on a track. Sheff’s part of the NY Drill scene, and this one has a polished drill sound. “They know the gang always On Go”
Zach Zoya - Understand: “Rolling through my ends, I need me some blessings, won’t you come and spend a minute with me” Chill vibes as Double Z describes cruising through his side of town, he’s the man there and he’s just asking for a little company. He describes a regular day, waking up slightly hungover from the henny with a ting by his side. He also talks about wanting to send shawty on her merry way but the box is the bomb tho… I think we all can relate one way or other (Ladies too, dope dick Danny is toxic AF but you can’t let him go, can you?)
Jay Critch - To The Sky: Jay Critch blows them trees to the sky to ease the pain. He opens up, talks about his hardships, not wanting to see his bro in court and he smokes to keep his mind off the bad shit. “Had to get up and go get it, it was do or die... Gotta get high outta my brain so I don’t lose mind” Shout out to anybody that ever had to send money on JPay (If you know you know).
