The Hit List: week 130 (October 16 - October 22)
Wale - Max Julien: DC’s finest announced his comeback earlier in the week then dropped this single on Friday. The title is an homage to the actor who portrayed “Superfly” in the classic film of the same name. Beat crazy, vintage MMG shit. Wale raps about his frenemies and how he moves dolo. It has Max Julien sound bite. He gotta hella bitties, and hella money, and has no time for the fakers. He’s selfish, but never pretentious. He gets in some NBA bars (he’s one of the kings of the sports bars).
Rexx Life Raj ft. LaRussell - Whirlwind: Faraji dropped “California Poppy 3” this week and it’s clear that he’s still one of the best in the game at this music shit. His versatility with the melodic flow in and the bars gives him an advantage over his contemporaries. This collab with LaRussell is my favorite. He gets into his introspective bag even touching on therapy. He raps about being honest with himself and coping (temporarily) with Mary Jane. I loved the bar about evolution and butterfly’s and moths. He’s deep inside the Whirlwind trying to keep his head on. LaRussell went and made a killing and fed his team. He knows how you deal with a little is how you deal with a lot. Money be having cats jumping through hoops but he stays grounded. And he had an epic bar too “The how is not important as the why” Tough Tune.
Elmiene - Mad At Fire: Listen. I had never heard of Elmiene before this week. His new project “Marking My Time” was listed under the R&B New Releases on Apple Music and I decided to give it a listen. Maybe 3 tracks in, I went and purchased the project. It’s one of the best R&B projects this year. All 6 tracks slap and belong on your late night playlist even “Mad At Fire” where he sings about moving on. If you never listen to anything I write, listen to this: If you like R&B go check out “Marking My Time” top to bottom, no skips.
Lil Weirdo - George Bailey Flow: Playamob’s Lil Weirdo dropped a new project this week called “Machine In Motion”. I usually will check out an artist I’ve never heard of if I see a feature artist that I recognize (and especially if I fuck with them). Weirdo had DaBoii on one track (“Spot One” also a standout). The one that I’ve had on repeat is George Bailey flow and the sample of Newcleus’ Hip-Hop classic “Jam On It”.
Rick Ross & Meek Mill - Lyrical Eazy: These 2 are gearing up for their album release. It’s good to see they’ve put their differences aside and came together to bless us. The beat is tough and Ross & Meek take time slaughtering it. No hook required.
Gucci Mane ft. Young Dolph - Pretty Girls: Gucci finally released his new album “Breath of Fresh Air” and it’s a double disc with almost every bop he’s dropped over the past year including “Woppenheimer” and “Big Boy Diamonds” with Kodak. My favorite album cut is one of his 2 Young Dolph features (RIP Flipper). This one is ironically called “Pretty Girls” (ironic because Guwop was featured on Wale’s track Pretty Girls and Wale made his comeback this week). This one is about the ladies who get that snapper. Pussy so good it feels like a setup. He advises dudes not to bring their girls around him. Dolph’s verse sounds specifically made for this song (echoes Guwops Pretty girls round me theme and mentions Gucci). Certified bop.
Joel Q & Mick Jenkins - Everybody Ball (Remix): I usually don’t like having Remixes on this list (really only when the original wasn’t highlighted which is the case here). Joel Q dropped the original 4 weeks ago and this week he got fellow Chicagoan Mick Jenkins to bless the remix. The buit is exquisite (the pian keys really hooked me). Joel spits about faith plus works, loving yourself, and not being afraid to ask questions. It’s motivation music, inspiration music. The beat drops in and Mick gets his shit off. He lets us know we all winners, no consolation prizes. Everybody ball.
Sampha - Dancing Circles: After a couple leadup singles Sampha dropped a new project this week called “Lahai”. If you love his previous work, you’ll love this new joint. My favorite track is “Dancing Circles” which starts with frenetic keys and has Sampha waiting outside in London for his boo. She shows up and they talk about life and having children. They then start Dancing and hold each other close, not wanting to let go.
City Girls & Muni Long - Emotions: City Girls dropped their new album “Raw” this week. That sampled quite a few hits and turned them into ratchet anthems. My favorite track is with superstar multi-hyphenate Muni Long who has come from the behind the curtains penning hits for others to performing on tracks (her track “Cartier” is in heavy rotation). This one is less of a club track and has the ladies expressing their emotions. They asking their boo to open his heart and his wallet. They put it down proper and just ask for something to show for all their hard work.
Lil Wayne & 2 Chainz - Presha: Wayne and Tit dropping the sequel to their “Collegrove” album soon this one called “Welcome 2 Collegrove” and this is the first single. Produced by Bangladesh (and with a whistle in the background). They rap about the thick rich chicks who got that good good. They Presha and they clean as a whistle (like on the beat).
Jim Jones 34Zeussy & Dilla illa - Air Sumthin: Jim Jones dropped a new project with a group of his artists titled “Jim Jones Presents Byrdgang 2.0”. Dope project, definitely has that NY gritty sound. Lots of bars about Ooters (which I’ve heard from Sleepy Hallow and Sheff G and now realize must be slang for Shooter). Air Sumthin is one of the best tracks. It has a horn that gives some Mariachi vibes. They guys rap about sliding on the opps (and of course their Ooters). They also rep Vamp Life heavy. Check out “Jim Jones Presents Byrdgang 2.0” and these highlights:
Facetime (with Capella Grey ft. Dyce Payso & DramaB2R)
Ooter Prayer (ft. 34Zeussy, Keen Streetz, Dyce Payso & G MiMis)
Big Flexin (ft. Tommyboyfame & Fivio Foreign)
In The Kitchen (ft. Shoota93)
Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Nicole Bus & Mathematics - Claudine: Wu Bros linked for this smooth track. Nicole Bus's voice and delivery reminds me of Sadé. She sings about the lovers and keeping the love going. The guys rap about the fairer sex, and makeup sex (all the positions). They assure shawty that no one could replace her.
Flo Milli - BGC: Flo Milli Shit! Well, folks, she’s got another one. BGC stands for Bad Girls Club and the beat samples the Carl Carlton classic “Bad Mama Jamma”. Flo raps about the baddies and their wants and needs. She’s chillin with her ladies and ain’t picking up for no man tonight.
G Perico & Gotdamnitdupri - Thin Line: G Perico dropped a new project with producer Gotdamnitdupri called “LA Summers 3”. G Perico raps about the streets and fake and shallow people. He talks about his come up, spending nights in the hood. He’s a 7 figure nigga and and dedicated his life to the hood and people mad he survived in the hood. It’s a Thin Line between love and hate. It’s a satch 22 and Perico knows he’s damned if he don’t and damned if he do.
Trae Tha Truth - On Tha Southside: Trae Tha Truth dropped a new project this week called “Stuck In Motion”. For those like his melodic delivery and his bars this track “On Tha Southside” is for you. He uses a melodic delivery on the hook and his distinct deep voice on the verses. He raps about his side of H-Town and lets the goofys know they should be ashamed. Candy paint, 84’s and vogue tires as his cruises through Tha Southside.
Naomi Sharon - Time and Trust: OVE Songstress Naomi Sharon dropped her debut project “Obsidian” this week. All the R&B heads should check this one out. My favorite track is “Time and Trust” which has some island vibes. She sings that her man's love is giving. She asks him to give her a call and not hold the love in because Time & Trust don’t go together so don’t let it pass by.
Meecho Darko ft. Nyck Caution - No, Thyself: Flatbush Zombie Meechy Darko dropped a new solo project this week called “Doses”. This collab with fellow Beast Coast member (and Pro Era’s own) Nyck Caution is a certified standout. No drums, it’s an introspective affair. Meechy’s voice appears deeper than normal due to some vocal alteration. He’s a man on a mission with kaleidoscope vision. Nyck uses a melodic delivery to get off a few bars off and the repeated refrain “Paranoia” at the end.
Terrace Martin & Alex Isley - Only In The Moment: Two of the most talented in the game Terrace Martin & Alex Isley dropped a collab projec this week called “I Left My Heart in Ladera”. Terrace and friends provide jazzy live instrumentation for Alex to sing over. My favorite track “Dear Issa” actually has no vocals but it’s a whole ass vibe. My favorite track with Alex is “Only In the Moment” where she sings about not believing in magic. She only believes In The Moment that brought her to her boothang. What else matters? Nothing, imo.
KXXNG Crooked & Joell Ortiz - Wife Her (Sniper): One half of the supergroup Slaughterhouse dropped a new project this week called “Prosper” Dope project, my favorite track is one they cooked up for their better halves. The “Sniper” part of the title refers how they be eatin’ pussy in a prone position (like a Sniper). They love her and they like her and because of that they gonna Wife Her (they have already, I think they’re both married). I love the “If it ain’t broke don’t let Iyanla fix it” bar too. Beat’s hella wavy as well.
Danny Brown - Tantor: Fresh off his collab project project with JPEGMAFIA Danny’s back with a loosie. The beat is Rock & Roll and the lyrics are signature Danny. He raps about the homies and the bitties (in a very unique way of course). “Each one, reach one” and this track has already reached many by the number of YT views.
Benji Blue Bills & Lucki - Coming Home: Benji Blue Bills dropped a new project this week called “Campaign Blue”. He only had one feature on there and it was this track with Lucki (and it’s obviously one of the standouts). This is one of the best beats on this weeks list and Benji destroys it. He raps about the streets and how you need more than one life to make it out. He talks about the bitties too (he got more than one type). He talks about the homies too and how some niggas toss they homies to the sharks. Lucki has White fans and Black fans. He pops Xans and stays up so late his son thinks he’s a vampire.
Hotboii & ATL Jacob - NASA: Florida Man Hotboii linked with one of the hottest producers in the game for this new loosie. The pair previously collabed on Hotnoii’s last project and now their back with this track that has haunting, 80’s pop vibes. Hotboii promises to put outer space like NASA.
Arin Ray - Curious: Crooner Arin Ray dropped a new EP this week called “Phases III”. Dope project, I love the upbeat bop “Curious”. It has Michael Jackson-esque and Weeknd vibes. He wanna find out if shawty got that snapper and she wanna know he can put it down too. They’re both Curious and there’s only one way to find out (they gotta smash of course).
Joony ft. Tony Shhnow - CLASSY: Johnny dropped a new EP this week called “MEMENTO”. Top to bottom it’s a great project. My favorite track is the TOny Shhnow collab “Classy”. It’s a vibe and they rap about the Classy chicks. The strings really give this beat some sauce and the Joony & Tony’s bars mesh with the beat well. They even made a video for this one so you know it’s special
