The Hit List: week 132 (October 30 - November 5)
Fetty Wap & Coi Leray - 1738: Fetty had some heat in the tuck as he serves his 6 year Federal sentence. This collab with Coi Leray is grown & sexy and one of the best tracks of the week. Coi sings about when the apple of of her eye gets saucy off the 1738 (Remy Martin) and she sees his eyes watching her (obviously not Fetty). She loves when he rides it. Fetty raps about smashing his bae while he’s turnt. I’m sure he don’t got no Remy in the can, but when he gets out, he’s gonna sip some Remy and beat cheeks.
Tee Grizzley - One of One: Tee Grizz dropped a new project this week called “Tee’s Coney Island”. Dope project, the title a reference to many of the Detroit establishments that serve Coney Island Style Hot Dogs. His storytelling is in peak form as is his growth as an MC. He talks about being a married man and how he built a gaming empire. My favorite album cut is “One of One”. It was produced by Detroit’s finest “Helluva” (From The D to A). Nobody is in Tee’s way, nobody gon take his place. Everybody got something to say but won’t say it to his face. Tough Tune.
EARTHGANG - Blacklight: This track is a whole ass vibe. It’s super funky and one you can definitely cruise to in the whip. Blacklight exposes all shawty’s flaws to the guys. The guys are in love with the real thang and they just wanna know what it is. This track is very Love Below-esque.
Jeezy - What I Gotta Do: God MC Jeezy dropped a new album this week called “I Might Forgive, But I Don’t Forget” and he got a lot of shit off his chest. he’s had a helluva year too, dropping a book and also getting divorced while trying to coparent a young child. My favorite track “What I Gotta Do” has a soul sample of another song that dropped this year (I can’t think of it right now) but it immediately hooked me. He raps about idols becoming rivals and outgrowing the OGs. He just wanted love but they turned him to the thug. He asked What I Gotta Do and they had him grinding in the streets. He salutes his sister and his big brother and assures them he got their back no matter what. Anything they need.
On The Radar, Chow Lee & Lonny Love - Tease Me: So On The Radar is like a Freestyle platform. They’ve had quite a few viral freestyles recently (including the Drake x Central Cee combination, pun intended). Well they’re back with an official track with Chow Lee & Lonnie Love. It has that Philly Bounce sound (the reincarnation of Jersey Club resurrected by Lil Uzi on “I Just Wanna Rock” and 2Rare on almost all his songs). It’s super catchy and I found myself running it back over and over (maybe bc I’m a Jersey nigga).
Smile High, 6LACK & The Main Squeeze ft. QUIN - Kinks: Like the EARTHGANG track earlier on the list this track too is a whole ass vibe (or WAV, it’s WAVy). It’s about the Kinks in a relationship (and not the sexual ones). You gotta work them out, to get a hold of everything. If you want the love to blossom you gotta make time, never waste time.
Benny The Butcher & Lil Wayne - Big Dog: I don’t really gotta say too much about this one. When one of the Greatest of All Time gets on a track with one of the best lyricists of this generation, Timeless music will be made.
Sonny Digital - Can’t Blame You: Megaproducer Sonny Digital dropped a new album this week called “Dolores Son” (safe to assume Dolores is his mama name). He been rapping for a minute. He actually cheffed the beat and provided all of the vocals for “I’m The Man” which 50 remixed and made his own. Sonny has the cheat code because he makes his own beats (and he definitely kept some of his best for this project). My favorite track is “Can’t Blame You”. It has a chipmunked soul sample in the back and has Sonny rapping about his life (and keeping it real). His daddy was a scammer, and his mama worked in fast food, and despite all that, he made it to the top of the charts.
Rapsody & Hit-Boy - Asteroids: One of the best lyricists of this generation linked with one of the best producers of this generation for a new loosie (Hit-boy sure knows how to pick em). Rapsody starts off by rapping her government name then stating the fact that she is underappreciated (facts). She talks about her insecurities and biggest flexes. It’s introspective and she even raps that if she was a man she’d get much more shine (more facts). When the haters throw rocks at her, she throws back Asteroids.
Mach-Hommy ft. Tha God Fahim - No Golden Calf: Jersey’s own Mach-Hommy dropped a new track with fellow new age boom-bapper Tha God Fahim. The beat immediately hooked me and it’s a departure from their usual production. The production is jazzy with the saxophone and has a 90’s Quiet Storm R&B vibe. The bars are top tier and the guys stick to their normal subject matter and use an uptempo flow. They go back and forth trading bars like tennis.
Lady London - D-R-U-N-K: Staying in Jersey, Lady London dropped a new album this week called “S.O.U.L.”. Dope project, I love the song “D-R-U-N-K’. It’s obviously about drankin. One of her boo thangs always calls her when he’s drunk. He be spilling all his feelings on his drunk shit. She loves it tho. That truth serum be having him saying what’s really on his mind.
Kid Cudi, Pharrell Williams & Travis Scott - At The Party: Cudi’s on a tear. After dropping “ILL WHAT I BLEED” last week and at least 2 other tracks earlier this year, he’s back with another loosie this week and brought two titans with him. Pharrell actually handles the hook and this is one of those new age party tracks (the type of party where everybody is high as hell, tripping, and rolling face). They was just there at the party. Shawty was drinking hearty, near death experience, out of body. Wavy flows from Cudders and Cactus Jack mesh incredibly with the beat.
Dave East & Vado - DeNiro & Pesci: This is one of the hardest tracks that dropped this week. When you think of gangster movies you think of DeNiro and Pesci and that’s who Dave East and Vado compare themselves to in this one. The beat and the piano keys give the track a mafia movie feel and the guys have some Cosa Nostra themed bars as well. Tough Tune.
Bic Fizzle - Loaded: Bic Fizzle dropped a new project this week called “Chosen 1K” and it’s one of my favorite drops on the list. I’ve been thoroughly impressed with his output since he signed with Gucci and 1017. My favorite track on the new project is “Loaded” which has some Latin vibes and has Bic rapping about spinning on the opps. Him and his whole crew Loaded and you’ll never catch them lackin. Check out “Chosen 1K” and these highlights:
Fish Scale (ft. Sett)
Knowing (ft. BigWalkDog)
Megan Thee Stallion - Cobra: This might be my favorite Meg song. After a much publicized trial, internet ridicule, and her laying low for a while she dropped a new track and addresses a lot of things. She talks about being suicidal, why her last relationship ended, missing her parents and having to do all this without them, all over a fire beat. It’s almost celebratory like I went through all this bullshit and I’m still standing.
JasonMartin - Woop Woop Bop Bop 1982: The artist formerly known as Problem dropped a new project this week called “A Compton Story”. It has a song I already had in the Serrato so I didn’t know if this was a compilation but there seems to be new tracks on there. This one has an ol skool field and has Jason rapping Woop Woop Bop Bop blow her back out. After he busts a nut, he hits the weed then passes out (sounds like a good ass day to me).
Lloyd Banks - Clubbin & Chaos: Banks dropped a new project this week called “Halloween Havoc IV: The 72nd Hr”. Throughout the project he sticks to the tried and true formula of A1 lyricism over dirty boom bap beats. My favorite track is “Clubbin & Chaos” which has a Boom-Bap lite beat (other elements in the beat add layers that give it a smoother sound). It has that Future sound in it too (you’ll know what I’m talking about). Banks got his eyes on the prize and will never be a runner up. Another day another buck, he’s dropping in the winter and will still fuck the summer up.
Lucky Daye - That’s You: Lucky Daye dropped a new loosie and I’ve read that Bruno Mars assisted somehow (it sure does sound like it). It’s funky, with live instrumentation. LD sings about living his wildest dreams from city to city. He’s still unfulfilled though. He’s spent every dime to get everything he wants and he’s still numb. The only thing he truly wants is that one and special somebody (That’s You).
The Alchemist ft. Gangrene - Royal Hand: Al dropped a new project with a bunch of heavy hitters called “Flying High, Pt. 2” this week. Like I always say, producers have the cheat code because they can save the best beats for themselves. “Gangrene” stood out as the best track (and the best beat), I came to find out later that Gangrene is actually a duo consisting of Al and Oh No (and this is a reunion of sorts). Of course he saved the best beat on the album for his group (it worked).
T.I. ft. Kamo Mphela - Vacay: TIP is preparing what he calls his final album as he continues his pursuits in other fields (including acting, stand-up comedy, and expanding his entrepreneurial portfolio). This is a summer track and it’s about going on Vacay. Flying somewhere exotic with some bad bitties and turning up and til it’s time to depart.
Ryan Trey - MORE THAN SORRY: R&B Singer Ryan Trey dropped a new project called “STREETS SAY YOU MISS ME” and I’ve been bumping it all week. “NOBODY” is my favorite track. I also love “MORE THAN SORRY” (and it looks like he just dropped a video for it so RT and his camp must think this one is special too). He sings to his bae, he knows he wasn’t the perfect boyfriend and this is his apology. He hopes one mistake won’t make her forget their history. He knows he hurt her and it’s been a minute but he ain’t throwin in the towel. He’ll do anything to see her smile. Check out “STREETS SAY YOU MISS ME” and these standouts:
RATHER YOU THAN ME/FLIP A Check ft. (Chase Shakur)
NOBODY
Katori Walker - Even Good Things: I listened to this track because I saw someone post a list of new releases on X (formerly Twitter) and I thought I recognized the artist's name. Glad I listened! K Dub did his thing on this track. He grew up on ramen and hot dogs and took the road less traveled to the place where he is now. Niggas switched on him but he don’t let it get to him. He knows he’s one of the chosen ones and he knows Even Good Things come to an end (including this track).
Kevin Abstract - My Friend: The Brockhampton alumnus dropped a new solo album this week called “Blanket”. I think it’s safe to call it an Indie Rock album (or that’s the sound at least, you can call it whatever the fudge you want). The track that stood out most to me is “My Friend”. Over acoustic strings Kevin sings about a friend. The way he thinks about them, they’ll never understand. It reminds me of Jack Johnson with its ultra-laid back vibes.
Apollo Brown & Joell Ortiz - About It: Producer Apollo Brown and lyricist Joell Ortiz have a new collab project on the way (according to the streets). They dropped this track “About It” in the lead up. Beat crazy and JO demolishes it. He keeps it more than 100, pledging loyalty to the homies that stuck with him. There’s some folks he don’t fuck with (and he hopes they doing aight). His scenery might have changed but he remains the same. He don’t like to talk about it because he is about it.
Jharrel Jerome - Diamonds: Multi-hyphenate Jharrel Jerome dropped a new EP this week called “Love Pack”. Dope project, he’s a skilled musical artist and you can tell he’s been putting in the work. My favorite track is “Diamonds” where he asks his main damie can he shower her in Diamonds. She don’t even try to be fly and she’s still a dime, supermodel status. Shawty not worried about the dollars or the fame and got JJ feeling all typa thangs. She’s the only one that’s real to him.
Sy Ari Da Kid ft. Paxquiao - Bad Advice: Sy Ari been popping out recently. A collab album with superstar R&B artists. Features. And now he’s back with a new track. Sy Ari’s friends always say bros over hoes and money over bitches. But at the end of the day, his shawty holds it down more than his homies. He ain’t saying his niggas ain’t real, but she is the realest. He doesn’t listen to the Bad Advice, he ignores the fuckery and holds shawty down.
