THE HIT LIST: WEEK 143 (JANUARY 15 - JANUARY 21)
Kyle Dion - Gimme: KD dropped a new album this week called “If My Jeans Could Talk” and he delivered a haymaker with the opening track “Gimme”. It's super funky with a twist of Rock n Roll (thank you electric guitar). Add in his soulful vocals and this collage of sounds comes together synergistically to make one of the best tracks of 2024 so far. “We gon’ be talking about this night until we meet again” (Facts!)
Fedd The God ft. Wiz Khalifa - Not Right Here: Taylor Gang or Die! The TG bros dropped this new collab where they vow to never save them hoes, to never slip, trick, or fall off for a [honey] dip (not right here). Some homies were cool, now they acting weird. They learned a lot of lessons through all their years. Fedd’s unique flow and his shoutout to Raising Cane’s made me instantly add this to the playlist.
Fredo Bang - Tina Turner: Fredo dropped a new album this week called “Yes, I’m Sad”. Super dope project, “Tina Turner” stood out to me for Fredo’s storytelling skills, the A1 beat, his vulnerability, and his ability to transition from bars to a melodic delivery effortlessly. Check out “Yes, I’m Sad” and these highlights:
Ring Ring (with Kevin Gates)
Dat Business
Sideways (with NLA Choppa)
Lil Dicky - No Fruits or Vegetables: LD, The Independent Variable dropped a new project called “Penith” this week and it’s basically a soundtrack of the most recent season of his hit TV show “Dave”. On the show he’s working on this very album and this fruit of his labor. Dope project, I relived Season 3 while listening (could be the best season of the show yet, if not, right behind Season 1). “No Fruits or Vegetables” shows off both his comedic and rapping skills. He don’t eat Fruits or Vegetables but he for sure eats pussy, the ass, and other stuff. The stripped down beat with the prominent keys helps to make this one special. Other standouts from “Penith”:
Honestly
Mr. McAdams
Harrison Ave
Second Coming
We Good (with GaTa)
Mick Jenkins - 2011: Mick Jenkins dropped the Deluxe to his most recent album “The Patience” this week, adding 2 new tracks. He went quality over quantity and “2011” is one of the best tracks to drop this week. Jazzy production, Mick raps about his come up. He went to school in Alabama (and got Chicago in his body). He put a thousand hours in, then ten thousand hours in, then fifty thousand hours in. His mind has always been locked and he just needed his body to keep pace so he asks his feet not to fail him now.
KrispyLife Kidd, Bfb Da Packman & Babyfxce E - Kentucky Love: When Bfb Da Packman on the track you know it’s gonna be some fat, funny shit but KrispyLife Kidd also delivered and added his name to the current fat, funny Mount Rushmore conversation. The beat samples Shawty Lo’s smash hit “Dey Know” (RIP L-O) and they re-rocked it into a Detroit-type beat. Babyfxce E held down the second verse with the most (new) Detroit sounding verse I’ve heard this year. Bfb finishes up to make this a Fat Funny sandwich, no hook needed.
Joey Bada$$ & KayCyy - Passports & Suitcases: Joey Bada$$ is back to the music after an impressive run on “Raising Kanaan'' (his character Unique may or may not still be alive…) and he’s back with a track for the ladies and got R&B rising star KayCyy to assist. Passports & Suitcases is just as the title describes, them galavanting across the globe with their special someone. She can leave her bread at home, they got everything covered.
Hus KingPin & 9th Wonder ft. SmooVth & Sweata - Already: Hus KingPin & 9th Wonder dropped a new project this week called “The Supergoat”. The boom-bap fans will love the album. My favorite track has Neo-Soul vibes and is dedicated to the ladies. She Already Know, it’s exclusive love and the guys will do anything for her. It’s like honey molasses Jill Scott.
Rich The Kid, Famous Dex & Jay Critch - Rich & Reckless: Ever since Rich and Dex peaced it up, they been dropping heat and they seem to have linked with Jay Critch as their third Rich Forever brother. Rich & Reckless describes their lifestyle, fast cars, fast women, and flawless jewelry. Dex and Rich go back and forth on the first verse then Critch bars it up the whole 2nd verse.
Blxst - Heart Ain’t Empty: Cali crooner Blxst dropped a new solo track this week. He’s becoming the new Nate Dogg, a cheat code on any hook, but he can hold his own on dolo tracks too. This is one of them heartfelt ones. Blxst sings as he tries to find the words to tell his shawty that he wishes he could be there for her the way she needs him (that’s a mouthful, sheesh!). All she needs to know is that his Heart Ain’t Empty, it’s filled with love for her.
