The Hit List: week 144 (January 22 - January 28)
Benny The Butcher, Jadakiss & Babyface Ray - Pillow Talk & Slander: Benny dropped his Def Jam debut “Everybody Can’t Go” this week. Dope project, this collab with Jadakiss and Babyface Ray stood out for both the beat (I’m pretty sure it’s a Hit-Boy beat) and their contrasting rap styles. All three guys have different flows but they all mesh with the production and the track is cohesive.
Skepta - Gas Me Up (Diligent): Skepta is arguably the GOAT British Rapper and he dropped another stellar track. He spits hard bars on this one to his pagan opps. They were friends in the trenches but they’ve been jealous ever since he’s become successful. Everyday’s a party for him and his brothers. They the same, ain’t a thing changed. He made a milli off a phone with a cracked screen and he encourages his main ting to Gas (him) Up, he needs the gasoline to stoke his fire.
LuhBody - When I’m Gone: My favorite project this week is “SunnySlope Baby” and it came from LuhBody. His flow reminds me of Pooh Sheisty, Big30 and Big Yavo. What I think I liked the most about the album is the soul samples he used on about half the tracks and his introspective bars. You can tell by the title of one of my favorite tracks “When I’m Gone” that he gets deep in that one bag. Do yourself a favor and check out “SunnySlope Baby” and these highlights:

SugarHill Keem & Edot Babyy - I Like It: NY Driller SugarHill Keem dropped a new album this week called “Playing For The Mavericks”. This track is a NY drill version of the Boogaloo classic “I Like It Like That”. Latin music and NY Drill mesh well (uptempo, hi-hat loops) and this one’s super catchy. I instantly added it to the playlist.
Erick The Architect & WESTSIDE BOOGIE - Instincts: Flatbush Zombie Erick the Architect must be loading the clip for a new album as this is his 2nd track he’s dropped in the last month. E the A follows his Instincts Monday to Wednesday. Life is a mystery and he almost got killed but he’s still here. The beat is hella wavy with 70’s soul vibes. BOOGIE adds some sauce with his verse, this beat is right in his wheelhouse.
Lyrical Lemonade, Teezo Touchdown, Juicy J, Cochise, Denzel Curry & Lil B - One Night: Lyrical Lemonade dropped a compilation album called “All is Yellow” and it features a smorgasbord of top tier artists. My favorite track “First Night” has a simple message. They guys tryna get in them sugar walls on the first night. We get an intro from rising star Teezo (one of 2 tracks he’s featured on) and an outro from the Based God himself.
ATL Jacob ft. Quavo - RNS: Listen we knew Quavo can rap and we know ATL Jacob could chef up some of the best beats but we didn’t know he had bars (you gon learn today!). On “RNS” (Rich Nigga Shit), Jacob cooked up one of the best beats this year. Quavo does the heavy lifting with a verse and the hook and J delivers an A1 verse over his own production. Tough Tune.
Kevin Gates - Lil Yea: Get Em Gates dropped a new project this week called “The Ceremony”. The track that hooked me from the opening seconds was “Lil Yea” (which is New Orleans slang for Shawty). Fittingly, this one samples Plies & T-Pain’s classic “Shawty”.
SiR - No Evil: Inglewood SiR dropped a new funky track this week and he experimented with a new sound. He uses a super soulful delivery that reminds me of D’Angelo and Macy Gray. The beat and the background vocals add some special sauce as he belts out that he sees No Evil.
PRICE - WRITEOUS: Audio Push alum PRICE dropped a new project this week called “C.I.T.Y.”. Dope project, I’ve been a fan of his since his days in the group (and I have a bunch of his solo tracks still in rotation). My favorite track on this new album is “CUZO” which dropped a month ago. My favorite album cut is “WRITEOUS” which has P rapping about his journey and his mission in life (bringing people where the light is and making sure his bros don’t get indicted). He’s the coldest and got the golden touch like Midas. Other standouts from “C.I.T.Y”:
CUZO
HARDT ST
Blac Youngsta, Lil Migo & Trapionn ft. Cy Yung - Scared To Lose You: CMG’s Blac Youngsta dropped a new compilation album called “Checkmate” to showcase his new artists. The track “Scared To Lose You” finds the guys reminiscing about their main tings. They get introspective about how they’re feeling and also rap about beating the pussy up. They mess with top shelf women. Ladies in the streets, superfreaks in the sheets. Sometimes they Scared To Lose Her (hence the song title).
Bryson Tiller - PSP: Young Tiller dropped a new project on Soundcloud called “Slum Tiller Volume 3”. If you go on there he actually has Vol. 1, 2 & 3 on one playlist (go back and revisit the older tracks, they’re heat). My favorite track on Vol. 3 is “PSP” which has nothing to do with the mobile gaming console, it's about his Passenger Seat Princess. It sounds like it interpolates the classic R&B track “Let Me Be The One” and has him flowing over a Detroit-type beat. This might be the first Detroit-type R&B track I’ve ever heard, and it’s flames.
Maxo Kream & Evilgiane - Bang The Bus: Texas’ own Maxo dropped a new track with producer Evilgiane. The title is a nod to the porn powerhouse Bang Bus and the cover art is an homage to the children's show (and books) the Magic School Bus. The beat is a mix of EDM and UK Drill and Maxo doesn’t miss a bar on the uptempo production. It’s different from what we usually hear him own but it’s fucking fantastic.
Che Noir ft. Ransom - Peaches and Herb: Griselda affiliate Che Noir dropped a new EP this week called “The Color Chocolate, Vol. 1” that all the Boom-Bap heads will love. The lyricism displayed on this collab with Ran in addition to the soul-sample beat makes this an instant standout. The title references the legendary group and of course Che name drops them in a bar. No hook required.
