The Hit List: week 152 (March 12 - March 18)
Future & Metro Boomin ft. Kendrick Lamar - Like That: Future & Metro dropped a new project this week called “We Don’t Trust You”. Much discussed is this track in which Kendrick disses Drake (and compares them to Prince and Michael Jackson). I obviously like the beef (pause) it keeps things interesting but my favorite part of the track is the “Who Da Shit” sample and the “Eazy Duz It” interpolation. NOTE: “Who Da Shit” sampled that track from an 80’s track…shows you how much I know… Check out “We Don’t Trust You” and these highlights:
Runnin Outta Time
Fried (She A Vibe)
Everyday Hustle
Seen it All
Where My Twin @
SleazyWorld Go - WTW: SWG dropped a new loosie this week and it samples one of my favorite songs of all time, DMX & Dru Hill’s “What These Bitches Want” which includes the iconic verse where DMX names all his bitches (the ones he can remember). Sleazy includes everybody in his version as WTW is short for What They Want. He shot the video in NY too. A1 track that I’ve had on repeat. Note: I say “bitches” respectfully as DMX was half man, half dog and bitch is the proper term for a female dog.
Loe Shimmy & BLP Kosher - Jay-Z: Loe Shimmy been bubblin for a minute now. He dropped a new album this week called “Zombie Land 2”. I immediately added 2 tracks to the Serrato “Maybach Curtains” (which dropped months ago but was new to me) and this track with Young Dreidel “Jay-Z” (that seems to have nothing to do with Hov but the beat knocks and they both slid so give it a listen).
BiC Fizzle - older times: Buc Fizzle has been my favorite artist of the New 1017 crop (Gucci Mane’s Label). I fuck with BigWalkDog heavy too (pause). Bic dropped a new loosie this week and it’s super dope. He raps about his daily routine (wake up, roll some gas, then make a play before he even eats). He keeps a pole for the opps and he makes sure to spend some quality time with the bad bitties. This was an instant add to the Serrato.
Mani Coolin & Walt Mansa - Show You Off: This was another instant add to the playlist. Mani Coolin & Walt Mansa dropped a collab project this week called “Now is Not Forever”. Dope project, I was surprised that I already had a Mani Coolin track in the Serrato. “Show You Off” has a funky 90’s R&B sound and is dedicated to that special someone. Cool wants to vibe with her, take her out the country just to smash in the Tropics. Everytime she comes around he can’t stop smiling.
SiR & Ab-Soul - I’m Not Perfect: Sir dropped a new album called “HEAVY” continuing this TDE run of absolute fire projects. The album is funky and soulful and my favorite track is this collab with Ab-Soul. It has live instrumentation (or what sounds like live drums). SiR croons that he’s not perfect but he’s gonna give shawty his all. 1 step forward and 2 steps back, but he’s still on track. In spite of it all, he knows he’s better with his better half. Solo delivers a top tier verse about God, cells, Jesus & vagina.
Lukan Raisey & NES - G Slide: I’ve mentioned this many times, but to reiterate, I’m a sucker for a sample. This track samples Johnny Gill’s classic “There You Go” and it was an instant add to the Serrato (and has been in heavy rotation).
Joyner - Fake Promises: Joyner finally dropped “Not Now I’m Busy after what seemed like a 2 year rollout and like 7 leadup tracks. It was worth the wait. DMX and Twista had my favorite guest verses, and both spit real shit from the heart. This solo track “Fake Promises” is peak Joyner. He raps to one of his tings. He wishes she wasn’t so superficial, he’d like to show her how to invest and build a future. He sees the potential in her but she’s not interested in bettering herself. She keeps doing the same shit, now she lost. Check out “Not Now I'm Busy” and these standouts:
I’m Ill
I Didn’t Go (Symba & DMX)
Still Alright (Logic & Twista)
Bryson Tiller - Calypso: Young Tiller is dropping a new album soon and he blessed us with this new track this week. On the first listen I was sold mainly because of the uptempo beat meshing well with Bryson’s melodic delivery. It comes together to make something that will be playing all summer. Ladies and gentleman, he’s back.
Skaiwater, Lil Nas X & 9Lives - light!: I saw this track on a new release and gave it a listen. It’s a catchy bop and I think the part where they chant “Fuck My Ex” is what really got me.
