The Hit List Week 16: (Aug 9 - Aug 15)
Soulja Boy - Toxic: Big Draco having a hell of a year. Epic Verzuz with Bow Wow, becoming culturally relevant again, and another hit radio record with “She Make it Clap”. This might be my favorite song of his this year, dope beat with Soulja getting in his melodic bag and letting his shawty know that he can’t chill wit her because she toxic. Good vibes only in the Soulja household and if she cleanses herself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka, Draco might consider a reconciliation.
Tory Lanez - "When It’s Dark (E-NFT) 8-10-21” Freestyle: Tory’s aiming to make a comeback after “The Incident”. He goes in over A$AP Rocky’s “Ghetto Symphony” beat and sends some shots back at Cassidy. He said Cass’s career was dead and he richer than him, and clowned him for being affiliated with R. Kelly. Toronto vs Philly, a tale as old as time!
Benny The Butcher - Flood the Block: Benny released an EP this week, “Pyrex Picasso” of some tracks he had in the vault. When the beat comes on you wouldn’t think this would be a Griselda track. 80’s glam rock keys carry it but the boom bap drums hold it down. Benny comes on a talks about his come up, money, sex and drugs but it’s the beat that makes this one stand out from the rest. Go check out the whole “Pyrex Picasso” project, especially if you’re a Griselda fan.
EarthGang - Erykah: EarthGang already came out with a dope track this year called Aretha and now they back at it with a track title paying homage to Ms. Badu. Erykah’s voice colors the tracks background as Olu and WowGr8 talk about their first time hearing Erykah, growing up, cryptocurrency and dealing with death. Funky track to cruise in your drop top Coupe DeVille. I also love the Rick & Morty wubablubadubdub mention too.
YNW Melly ft. Lil Baby & Lil Durk - Take Kare: Currently incarcerated, Florida artist YNW Melly released a new album this week called “Just A Matter of Slime” with hella features and hella bops. I don’t know how he got his vocals so crispy, he must have a studio in his cell. This one features two of the hottest niggas in the game, The Voice & The Hero. It’s for the ladies, the ones that hold it down while the fellas on the road gettin that guap. For them, the guys will give the world. Listen to the whole album front to back. I usually highlight the songs I like the most but I was listing the entire project so just go to Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Youtube, whatever tickles ya fancy, search “Just A Matter of Slime”, press play and enjoy!
midwxst - Tic Tac Toe: New Artist Alert! Midwxst is playing his opps like Tic Tac Toe. Trippy beat, sounds like a symphony of video game sounds (He even mentions Crash Bandicoot.) Smart move making his stage name unique, great for SEO. He has the ability to intercept girlfriends, he balls like Kobe, he’ll never miss and he never quits.
K Camp - Forgiveness: K Camp blessed us with a new album this week “FLOAT”. I been a big fan of his music as he usually touches on deep life shit and the bitties, two of my favorite things. On “Forgiveness” he touches on both. He starts with his main damie wanting a Birkin and temptation from the Devil but he be asking the Lord to be with him. He describes advice he received from his grandma, envious fake niggas surrounding him, and survivor’s remorse. He ends with some braggadocious bars about jewelry and private jets. Check out these other tracks from “FLOAT:
Tables Turn
Game Ain’t Free
Life Has Changed (ft. PnB Rock)
Privacy (ft. Trey Songz)
Mama
Guts (ft. True Story Gee)
Wale ft. Yella Beezy & Maxo Kream - Down South: C’mon fam, you sample Mike Jones, Paul Wall & Slim Thug’s smash-hit “Still Tippin” with two Texas rappers and The MUOAT (most underrated of all time… I tried..) and you cooking with grease! This is a bop (double entendre intended) Wale goes off then Yella and Maxo come on and add that down south flavor to this track. “Down south slangin’ music with these hustlers, Keep it true to self and never sell out wit these busters”. Tough Tune.
WizKid ft. Justin Bieber & Tems- Essence (Remix): The Afrobeats Star, WizKid, dropped the smash single “Essense” last year but decided to run it back after Biebs asked to hop on the track. JB fits in perfectly and the whole song is a vibe! They just might do what they set out to do, have the song of the summer.
Denzel Curry - The Game: “Before you judge, do your research” Zel is one of the best young rappers in the game, he might not be as popular as some of the of his peers because his subject matter isn’t always talkin bout some shoot em up bang bang, fuck bitches get money shit, but he’s a top tier talent. He describes how he came up: hard work, and not fucking wit lazy ass niggas. Even on this one he criticizes some of the gangsta rappers “The same niggas screaming that they gang, gang, gang, be the same niggas fucking up the game, game game”. He admits he likes a few of the new rappers but says we look up to junkies and calls their swag lame for only rocking designer and smashing the same 3 bitties. This nigga ain’t lying. I don’t think anything will change, but it’s great to audacious artists willing to offer constructive criticism out of love. It’s even better that he’s part of the community, not some outsider casting judgment.
Fat Joe & DJ Drama- Diamonds: Fat Joe released a Gangsta Grillz tape this week with DJ Drama, executive produced by his longtime collaborators Cool & Dre titled “What Would Big Do 2021”. On it, he’s sticking with his recent streak of sample-heavy tracks and the whole tape fire. On this one he samples Prince’s “Diamonds & Pearls” and Dre even spits a verse (Dre from Cool & Dre, Not Dr. Dre or Dr. Dre from Dr. Dre & Ed Lover (is he still alive?...)) Anyways, if you like Prince, Fat Joe, DJ Drama, dope beats, dope rhymes, pussy, cocaine and/or The Lord go listen to this track and the rest of the “What Would Big Do 2021” ya bastard!
Westside Gunn & Fabolous - Brick After Brick: Gunn and Fab over a Swizzy beat!? Yes please! Made for the soundtrack of the Epix show “Godfather of Harlem” this one is a modern masterpiece. Westside starts talking that street shit, ambushing opps, triple beam scales, AR-15’s, Ace of Spades champagne, designer clothes, and luxury automobiles. He handles the chorus too which is a repeated chant of the song’s title “Brick After Brick”. F-A-B-O delivers a primo verse and also gets in his cocky flow. His whip is a G Wagon and his designer fit is highlighted by a pair of Rick Owens sneakers. He spends time with ladies but suggests that you mind your own business when worrying where he “dips his chip”. (Considering he had a chip tooth this is a hilarious way to describe eating box, but I don’t think that’s what he meant). He sips Veuve Cliquot champagne in his other whip, a Maybach. He dreamed about this life as a juvie and now when he shoots it’s always a swish. Tough Tune.
Swae Lee & Jack Harlow - Ball is Life: Made for the Madden 22 soundtrack, this a track dedicated to the come-up and the grind. Swae Lee proclaims that til the day he dies he’ll ball everyday. For everybody that doubted him, the fake friends who wouldn’t help when he was down, he’s using that chip on his shoulder to drive him to the money and the booty. Jack Harlow reminisces about burning CDs, emailing venues trying to get on, riding the bus and bumping Kendrick. He’s overly dedicated and his recent success is a testament to that.
Meek Mill - Mandela Freestyle: Meek got some shit he gotta get off his chest. After being acknowledged by The Nelson Mandela foundation for his work on criminal justice reform, he dropped this celebratory freestyle with an accompanying video highlighting his life since being released from prison for a probation violation. After his online spat with another artist on this list earlier in the week (Toronto v Philly again), this was a bright spot.
Boldy James & Alchemist x Benny The Butcher - Brickmile to Montana: The Nas co-signed, Detroit MC dropped a new collab project with Alchemist this week entitled “Bo Jackson”. B James knows what he does best and Al is the perfect person to cook up beats for him. On “Brickmile to Montana” he gets an assist from Benny (the Butcher not Blanco) who switches his flow up to match the beat. It almost doesn’t sound like him but it’s fire! Boldy hits the fast flow too, it’s a nice change of pace over a traditional boom bap beat. Some other highlights from “Bo Jackson”:
Double Hockey Sticks
Photographic Memories (with Roc Marciano ft. Earl Sweatshirt)
Diamond Dallas (with Stove God Cooks)
Fake Flowers (ft. Freddie Gibbs & Curren$y)
3rd Person
Rexx Life Raj ft. Terrace Martin - Calling: Former Boise State O-Lineman and Bay Area artist Rexx Life Raj is one of my favorite rappers of this generation. I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves but Faraji don’t care. I heard the lil nigga from Stranger Things say Raj had one of his favorite songs at the time and thought “Oh Raj is more poppin than I thought!” Back to the present, on “Calling” (featuring production by Terrace Martin) he gets introspective about friends and family, knowledge of self, and self love. He talks about the inescapable attraction of a special someone calling him. This track is jazzy, melodic and smooth. Like a cold glass of Ciroc on a crisp summer evening. Go check it out.
