The Hit List: week 169 (July 15 - July 21)
Rich The Kid & Offset - Not In The Mood: New Album: “Life’s a Gamble”. This track has a wavy vocal loop in the background. Rich & Set surf the beat and rap about opulence.
Heems & Sid Vashi - DAME: Great find in Apple Music New Releases. Heems spits about the apple of his eye. Her man is a wasteman and he recommends she put dude on the bench. He’ll treat her like a Dame (ie Judi Dench).
JT - Swang: New Album “ City Cinderella” I was hella shocked by how much heat was on here (especially because this usually isn’t my bag). The beats and samples were all A1 and JT talked her shit. “Swang” got added to the Serrato. The Loose Ends sample gave it a special sauce and JT cooked her haters. Other highlights:
Servin
90’s Baby
Uncle Al
Jay Juice ft. Tse e2 - another round: New Project “Time Don’t Last”. Another great find in Apple Music. This one samples Breezy’s “Another Round” and they made it into a NY Drill track. Top Tier.
5KLilD - Lit: New Album “Mizzle Livin” Another find on the Apple Music New Releases list. “Lit” has angelic piano chords and Lil D bears his soul and lets the leeches know they can get to stepping. They wasn’t around when he was down so they can’t come around when he’s up.
Courtney Bell ft. Skilla Baby - Hebrews 13:6: New Album “Microdose Darkside”. C Bell is an interesting cat, with a lot to say. He’s on the positive tip and it’s not forced or corny (and he got bars for days). The album has superstar features and this track with Skilla Baby got immediately added to the Serrato. Other standouts:
100 (ft. Icewear Vezzo)
Issues (with Mishon & Katt Rockell)
Motion
Get Em High (with LaRussell & Hit-Boy ft. Royce Da 5’9”)
Curren$y & MonstaBeatz - Sending Signs: New Project “Radioactive”. My favorite track is actually “The Groove (Interlude)” where MonstaBeatz got a chance to get his shit off. The final track “Sending Signs” is also special. Hot Spitta took a break from rapping bout ol skool whips and reefer joints and rapped about the universe Sending Signs.
Childish Gambino ft. Legend - Can You Feel Me: New Album “Bando Stone and The New World” Don G popped out of his cave to present at the BET Awards and after a couple of leadup singles, he dropped his new project this week. My favorite track is one that features his son (I think that’s his son). It’s motivational and Bino and Legend take turns singing about their feelings (including Don losing his Dad) and aspirations over production that would fit in perfectly on the Lion King soundtrack.
Logic ft. T Man The Wizard - Mission Control: Logic dropped a new track and this one samples Gucci’s classic “Lemonade”. They sped the beat up and gave it a boom-bap sound and Bobby buries the beat in less than 2 minutes flat. New album soon come.
Denzel Curry & Armani White - WISHLIST: New Project “King of the Mischievous South Vol. II” 32 Zel dropped a new project full of tracks with his signature sound. “WISHLIST” stood out for the bouncy beat (it was knocking in the whip). The message is that hoes gon be hoes (they come with a Wishlist). If you can’t pay, you can’t play.
Angelo Mota - Animal: New Project “Angelo Is Tired”: Gelo Weed dropped a new project. I hadn’t heard of him before but I listened to the first couple tracks and liked the vibes so had to give the whole project a listen. My favorite track is the last one, “Animal” and it’s a heartbreak-ish anthem. It’s mad melancholy and whenever shorty calls he comes running like an Animal. Once the drums kick in the track goes. I was in the whip with my head bobbin, (pause) speeding down the freeway, feelin free as shit. Like an Animal.
