The Hit List Week 17: (Aug 16 - Aug 22)
Trippie Redd & Juice Wrld - Matt Hardy 999: Trippie Redd released his long awaited album “Trip at Knight” this week. Already coming in with buzz, he teased a Drake feature that he added to the album on release day. And not just any Drake feature, one where he sends some light shots at Yeezy & Push. But, this blurb is about “Matt Hardy 999”. This track rides the synth wave of the album, adds some organ and loops the drums in and out and sees Trippie and the late great Juice Wrld do a little back and forth. It’s a sonic treat! Check out these other standouts from “Trip at Knight”:
Molly Heart
Betrayal (ft. Drake)
Holy Smokes (ft. Lil Uzi Vert)
Miss The Rage (with Playboi Carti)
Demon Time (with Ski Mask the Slump God)
New Money
Danny Phantom (ft. XXXTENTACION)
iPhone
Rich MF (ft. Polo G & Lil Durk)
Sheff G, A Boogie wit Da Hoodie & Sleepy Hallow - Run It Up: Gangstas need love too! I love all 3 of these guys. The new New York. Sheff, A and Sleep came through with a track for the ladies. Strings and melodies. Sheff holds down the hook asks shawty to be the Bonnie to his Clyde and assures her he isn’t playing around. He wants to make a baby with her and is wondering how much does it costs to see her smile. A Boogie has multiple revenue streams, and a lot of guns, but still finds time to buy his bae a nice watch. Sleepy knows that his shorty thinks he’s stuck in his ways, but he just ain’t let the money change him.
dvsn & Ty Dolla $ign - Don’t Say a Word: dvsn & Ty Dolla released a joint album this week called “Cheers to the Memories” and it’s heat. It’s one to put on that special playlist for when you and your significant other feelin frisky. On this one, the guys encourage their ladies to keep their relationship on the low. What they do together is they business, not for the streets to be gossiping about. Ty Dolla sings that actions speak louder than words, and encourages his main thang to move accordingly. Go listen to the whole project, I most certainly will be getting someone pregnant to this album in the next 7 to 10 business days. (Jk I get no buns)
Jay Critch - Hustler Muzik: A flip of Lil Wayne’s Carter II single of the same name, JC gets in his grindin bag and it’s a pocket he finds very well. He talks about staying strong when niggas changed on him. Losing his mind when he got a lil paper. He stay protected, and if he gotta let it loose, he will. “10 toes on the ground, my head to the sky, got so much on my plate could feed a family of five”.
Rod Wave ft. Lil Durk - Already Won: Stage killa Rod Wave dropped the Deluxe to his hit album “Soulfly” wit bout 9 new tracks. This one is tied for my favorite as y’all know I’m a sucker for samples (and by y’all I mean the one person who might read this someday). “Already Won” samples New Edition’s “Can You Stand the Rain” and finds Rod reflecting on the cost of success, globetrotting, losing sleep, missing people, and trying to fit shawty in his schedule. Lil Durk lends a hand, gets in his melodic bag and asks his shawty to hold it down while he’s on the road. He stays up late thinking about her. Also check out “Get Ready”, another song from the deluxe. It contains an interpolation of Boosie’s “Chasing My Dream” and it’s about chasing Dreams (duh). Featuring Kodak, they knocked it out the park for the second week in a row.
SZA - I Hate You: SZA came through with the Soundcloud dump and she must be sitting on some super duper dopeness because these tracks were A1 and they throwaways to her. Nice lil 3-piece for the people. On “I Hate You” she talking down to some nigga per usual and me being a dude, I shouldn’t like this song but I feel her. She fed up with the whole love thang but she miss mans and wish it were different. But at the end of the day, she feels like “fuck you!” We all been lovesick before, it’s a truly relatable feeling (not me tho, there’s an icebox where my heart used to be). Check out the other 2 tracks she dropped:
Joni
Nightbird
Mo3 & Morray - In My Blood: I was in Dallas when Mo3 was murdered and at the time I hadn’t heard of him, but I’ve become familiar. He was a talented artist, gone too soon. On this collab, with up and comer Morray, Mo3 shouts out the matriarchs in his family, saying that he promised his mama he’d be a better man, and to his grandma he an angel but the streets is in his blood. He encourages us to hug our homies because he can’t hug his and sadly now he’s the homie that can’t be hugged. This one is right up Morray’s alley, he’s working on himself (under construction) and since he’s come up he’s gone from selfless to selfish because with some people, you give em an inch, they want a mile. He’s preaching positivity but won’t put the whistle down, too many opps around. Tough Tune.
Young Thug - Tick Tock: This is a bop. Big “Ski” vibes on this one, and features one of the best lines of any song on the list “You might have to take the assist, let your dog get the big shot”. Wise people know that you gotta let your people cook, pass the ball and make sure your teammates eat. At the end of the day we win as a team.
Skrillex, Justin Bieber & Don Toliver - Don’t Go: Skrillex & Biebs previously had a hit with “Where Are U Now” and they decided to run it back and add Cactus Jack Records artist Don Toliver. This doesn’t sound like a “Skrillex beat” less electronic and more traditional R&B/Pop, little whistle in the background that carries it and Bieber kills it. Obviously an ode to the ladies. Bieber got dreads in the video, Black Twitter prolly already killed him and I expect some commentary from a certain podcast… Donny T fits like a puzzle piece. This will be in heavy radio rotation for surely.
Abra ft. Playboi Carti - Unlock It: I first heard of Abra when some website did a piece on Awful Records and the song they had of hers as a sample was a jam. A lot of her songs have a bouncy 80’s electro-funk mixed with 90’s R&B sound and her voice seems heaven-sent for those beats. On “Unlock It” she asks mans to swing her way, use his key and Unlock It. Carti adds a lil seasoning to the track but best believe Abra is the main dish.
Dame D.O.L.L.A. ft. Blxst & Tree Thomas - We The Ones: Future NBA Hall of Famer Damian Lillard (aka Dame D.O.L.L.A.) released an album called “Different On Levels the Lord Allowed” this week. He been putting out some fire singles for awhile (and was even featured on the Space Jam soundtrack) and this one accompanied the drop. Featuring rising star Blxst, and Tree Thomas, this is an ode to the come up. Dame grinded, wasn’t a touted prospect and worked his way up to be one of the games best, and by the game I mean both Rap and B-Ball. Not only is he prolly the best athlete artist, but he one of the dopest rappers in the game period. And like Blxst said: “Before it’s all said and done they gon’ know that We The Ones”. Go stream “Different On Levels the Lord Allowed”.
Earth Wind & Fire ft. Lucky Daye - You Want My Love: I saw Earth Wind and Fire with a new song and I said oh hell naw. But I gave it a listen, and man oh man, fuck the earth and the wind, they got that fire! Can’t think of a better collaborator for them than Lucky Daye. Old school song with a new school twist. Lucky Daye handles most of the lead vocals while EWF handles the background vocals and ad libs. One of the OGs spits a verse at the end. Check it out, and don’t let your grandma and grandpa hear or you might get a new auntie or uncle.
Icewear Vezzo - Chamber Brothers: This a Detroit-type beat if I ever heard one. Of course one of D-Town’s finest, Icewear Vezzo, demolishes the beat. He’s got lots of jewelry, luxury automobiles and he’s pushing mad work like the Chambers Brothers did in Detroit in the 80’s (Allegedly… Also, I saw their episode of American gangsta… Them niggas was really real…)
Sada Baby - Karlton: Bro! Thank god for Youtube autoplay. This shit just came on after something else I was bumping and I was like, this new? Yup! I fuck wit Detroit, I just had Jet’s Pizza over the weekend. This one sample’s the Fresh Prince theme song and finds Sada and some of the homies doing their interpretation of the Carlton Dance. Check out the song and the video.
