The Hit List #22: (Sep 20 - Sep 26)
J. Cole - Heaven’s EP: Cole already dropped one of the best albums of the year in 2021 and he’s on the list twice this week as he took on the “Pipe Down” instrumental from Drake’s new Album “Certified Lover Boy”. He gets in his super duper introspective bag on this. Asking did the money water him down. Is he #3 behind Drake and Kendrick? He vows that whatever lack of success he experiences won’t come from a lack of effort. He going harder than hard and whatever happens is God’s Plan. He critiques the social media era and vows to never show his kids off, and disses anybody pimpin they kids out for views. At the end he answers his question and boldly proclaims that he’s the best and we (the audience fell for the bells and whistles) last two topics sound like a shot at someone in particular but it’s never safe to assume...
Moneybagg Yo ft. Lil Wayne & Ashanti - Wockesha (Remix): Weezy F Baby on a run and don’t call it a comeback! He dropped 2 fire ass Gangsta Grillz mixtapes last year so big bruh ain’t been dormant but he’s been featuring on tracks from a wide range of artists including Polo G, his young Money teammates Nicki & Drake on “Seeing Green” and this remix of one the hottest songs on what was the highest selling Rap album of the year (even over J. Cole) before CLB dropped. Wayne talks about his sizzurp break but feels he should go back to his long lost lover as it was correlated to his wild success. Ashanti drops a verse (her song was sampled on the original) and describes her love as addicting as lean. She ain’t lyin, we saw Nelly popping up at Verzuz for a hug...
Sheff G - Drum Dummy: Sheff G is one of my favorite artists out and he’s one of the most underrated right now. To me one of his biggest strengths is his honesty. He talks about being down bad and you feel it. He also talks about the high life, but additionally he talks about his inner struggles even after the money and fame. And with his mans Great John on the beat, they cheffed up a gem once again (see what I did there?) On Drum Dummy he asks why cats be poppin shit on the net but run irl. He might have to call his cuzzo aka Drum Dummy (cause he got the Drum on him and he go Dummy for the fam). Sheff G doesn’t need your love, you can keep it. He don’t feel no pressure in this biz, he cool as a cucumber. Now that he poppin, all the shawtys from around the way wanna love on him. He was stressed out, but now his whole family blessed now. He took some losses, but he gone stay winning. Tough Tune.
Westside Gunn ft. Stove God Cooks - Ostertag: Westside Gunn’s output is impressive. This nigga releases like an album a week. This week it was the second part of his most recent drop, this one called “Hitler Wears Hermes: Side B”. Gotta say I was impressed, from the variety of beats to the eclectic mix of features from recurring collaborators like Stove God & Mach Hommy to 2 Chainz, Tyler & Jay Elec and of course the Griselda fam. This could be my all time favorite WG project. “Ostertag” stands out not only for the fire feature from Stove God but the light, airy drum-less beat. Give it a spin and check out these other standouts from ““Hitler Wears Hermes: Side B”:
Hell On Earth Pt. 2 (ft. Benny The Butcher & Conway The Machine)
Free Kutter (ft. Jay Electronica)
Forest Lawn (ft. 2 Chainz & Armani Caesar)
Why i do em like that (ft. Billie Essco & Keisha Plum)
RIP Bergdorf (ft. Mach-Hommy)
Survivor Series (ft. Jay Worthy, Larry June & TF)
Munch (ft. Tiona Deniece)
99 Avirex (ft. AZ & Stove God Cooks)
The fly who couldn’t FLY straight (ft. Tyler The Creator)
Vic Mensa ft. BJ The Chicago Kid - Taste: I recently visited Chicago for the first time. I went to try the food, and also for Ye’s final “Donda” listening party. It’s a beautiful city and the people were great. Only wild part was stop signs at major intersections (fam, who urban planned this shit?) Anyway two Chi-town natives, Vic and BJ, link for a soulful ode to their city and spending time in the city with they main thang. I encourage you to take a trip to Chicago with your boo (or dolo) and check out all the spots they mention in the song. And if you like me, end up at a South Side White Castle at 3 AM because your flight got in late. Don’t be scurred my nigga, it’s only the hood!
Jon Bellion ft. Burna Boy - I Feel It: I got Jon Bellion in the Serrato somewhere. On this one the multi-hyphenate links with the African Giant, Burna Boy for a soulful electro-bop. “I Feel It” is about feeling that energy from your significant other. The butterflies, that gut feeling, when you know you know, no need for shawty to say a word. Burna talks about a shift in energy, feeling it, and heartbreak and shit. The highs and the lows, we experience the full gamut of feelings as a relationship progresses. Be prepared.
NBA Youngboy - Break or Make Me: This nigga NBA Youngboy managed to put out a full-length album, “Sincerely, Kentrell”, with no features, while being fully locked up for almost a year now. That’s impressive. This album also took the #1 spot from Drake (equally impressive) It’s a testament to how hard he goes when he’s free. “Break or Make Me” is a spiritual sequel to his track “Off Season” (at least its sound). He questions his girl “Is you trying to make me or you trying to break me?” He asks her to keep their business on the low and he trying to stay low key (besides the diamonds he buys for his kids and his crew). Also from “Sincerely Kentrell”:
Bad Morning
On My Side
Rich Shit
My Killa
Baddest Thing
Nevada
Run Tha Jewels ft. Lil Wayne, Greg Nice & DJ Premier - Ooh La La (Remix): Killer Mike and El-P (aka Run Tha Jewels) released a Deluxe of their hit album RTJ4 (I mean all their albums have been hits). The additions were mostly instrumentals but included some new songs including their feature on the video game Cyberpunk 2077 and Weezy Wee on this remix. What more can I say, take a hit song, add a Hall of Fame rapper and poof, mo greatness.
Joyner Lucas & J. Cole - Your Heart: So Joyner was in the news recently for some other stuff, but we not here to talk about that. We’re here to talk about his track with J. Cole “Your Heart”. Joyner starts speaking to a young lady whose heart he broke. He points out all the things she’s been going through since their split. J. Cole admits to being a fuck nigga in the past, and not blaming a shawty for wanting to get even. He gives advice to us to avoid the games and be straight up because karma is real. And if the tables are turned one day, ya might not like it playa.
G-Eazy ft. Goody Grace - Everything is Everything: G-Eazy released a follow up to his 2014 breakthrough album, this one titled “These Things Happen Too”. This shit was amazing. I found myself listing the entire tracklist as faves, I had to take a bunch out (bc why link a whole 20 song album when I can tell you to go listen to the whole thing?) but the features are popping, the production is wavy. If you fuck with that new West Coast sound or Gerold or both. You’ll really dig TTHT. (Deluxe dropped the same day, I listened to all 27, all heat) On Everything is Everything, G talks about missing his Vicky Secret Model ting over a beat carried by strings, hi-hat and snare. The relationship is a bit tumultuous, but it’s Saturday night and they dancing under lights and Everything is Everything. Listen to these other highlights off “These Things Happen Too” (Deluxe):
These Things Happen Too
When You’re Gone (ft. Lil Wayne)
Instructions (ft. YG)
Wanna Be Myself
I, Me, Myself
Now, Later, Next (ft. E-40, DaBoii & ShooterGangKony)
Faithful (ft. Marc E. Bassy)
No More (ft. Ty Dolla $ign)
Time (ft. Matthew Schultz)
Still Be Friends (ft. Tory Lanez & Tyga)
Get Left
Lucky Daye - Over: Lucky Daye got a nice lil win streak going. Appearing on a song with the Legends Earth, Wind & Fire and featuring on every big R&B album that dropped this year, now he blesses us with a solo track. Some heartache music. He thought his entanglement was over but shawty keep pulling him back. Hov tried to tell us about the power of the P-U-S-S, but why does that power conquer generations of men with no end in sight? Iono, I don’t got all the answer… You better call Tyrone..
Remble & Lil Yachty - Rocc Climbing: Oh shit! Big perm yachty back with the Aunty look. He’s had a resurrection of sorts (but he really never left, doing Sprite commercials and Teen Titans and shit) but being on Kanye’s “Donda” elevated his already high profile. On this one, with up and comer Remble (who has a fantastic, unique, proper-gangsta flow if you haven’t heard yet. English language mastery) and they talk about exotic cars, sloppy toppy, getting rich, the opps, being homewreckers, Sponge Bob, midgets, breast augmentation, crocs & socks, and percs. All type of shit. Great beat too laced with keys.
D Smoke with BJ the Chicago Kid & Tobe Nwigwe - Find My Way: Grammy-nominated artist D Smoke (brother of TDE’s SiR and former contestant on Netlix’s music competition show Rhythm + Flow dropped a new album this week called “War & Wonders”. You can tell some money was spent on this one and it was put to good use because the album was top-notch. “Find My Way” features rising star Tobe Ngwigwe and crooner BJ the Chicago Kid (who’s from Chiacgo obvi) and starts off with some violins then switches to a mellow boom bap beat. Tobe & D Smoke get in their storytelling bag while talking that talk in that nouveau-conscious way of theirs. They give props to the Lord, talk about their day, their past and look to find their way toward their futures. Tough Tune. Also from “War & Wonders”:
War & Wonders
Shame On You
Crossover (ft. WESTSIDE BOOGIE)
Common Sense (with SiR)
Stay True (with John Legend)
Say Go
Good Thing (ft. Ty Dolla $ign)
Sleepwalking (with Fireboy DML)
Better Half
T Shyne & Young Stoner Life - 30 For 30: I’ve obviously heard of Young Thug, Gunna and the rest of the YSL crew. Wasn’t familiar with T-Shyne, but he’s sure to pop on radars if he keeps making tracks like this. Triumphant, braggadocious, perfect for the whip or in the gym. T-Shyne doesn’t like sex in the morning, he’d rather get some head. He used to be broke, but now he’s rich and has chains, diamonds and a big house. His opps are wild pussy and they’re broke. He advises them to get their business up. He also enjoys inhaling marijuana smoke in his spare time (after he’s taken care of business of course).
Kari Faux ft. Smino - Mo Liquor: As I was listening to this album, I made froyo run, and this came on in the whip and shit was knocking. I almost had to re-route to get me a bottle (but my heart was set on froyo. I digress). I first heard Kari Faux when she dropped “Chattin Shit” and that shit is one of my favorite songs ever. If it comes on the playlist, I’m playing it everytime, never skip. It was featured on her 2020 album “Lowkey Superstar” and this week she dropped a Deluxe of that album. She got some dope features and remixed some of the originals and added some new ones including “Mo Liquor”. Her and Smino chase their liquor with more liquor wit they niggas. Cause what’s better than being drunk? Being Mo Drunk with the homies! Check out these other Deluxe additions to “Lowkey Superstar”:
While God Was Sleeping’… (Remix) [ft. J.I.D.]
Stickup! (Remix) [ft. Jazz Cartier]
Look @ That (Remix) [ft. Yung Baby Tate]
Trouble
Too Much, Too Fast (ft. Deante Hitchcock)
Rapunzel
Coi Leray - TWINNEM: Catchy bop by the 2nd-generation hip-hop artist. Laced with organ riffs this is one of the beats on this list. Coi does a great job of beat surfing on this song about staying down with your day ones.
Shordie Shordie & Blxst - Specific: Shordie Shordie has been making waves for the past year (including his collab project with Murda Beatz). On this one, him and Blxst cooked one up for the ladies. Basically, they tell shawty to chill and stop being so specific. They just wanna smoke, stroke, and pass out. No need for all the questions, and follow-up questions, and deep dives, investigations, interrogations, be easy (goes both ways too, I ain’t no hater).
Offset Jim ft. Babyface Ray - Make No Sense: 2 rappers with other artists' names as their first name and a regular anglo-saxon second name. Love it! This is a Detroit song if I ever heard one, beat and flow have that signature D-Town sound. OJ and B-Ray talk that street talk, that money talk, that real talk. Order you a Jet’s Pizza, throw on the Lions game, after that watch BMF on Starz. Spark a blunt and then bump this in the whip and have yourself a Detroit ass Sunday, ma nig!
