The Hit List WEEK 30: (Nov 15 - Nov 21)
Adele - My Little Love: What will be the highest selling album of 2021 dropped this week to critical acclaim, Adele’s “30”. Adele channeled her past heartbreak to craft another masterpiece. On “My Little Love” she changes the pace and dedicates a song to her daughter. She admits that she has a lot to learn as a mom, and is experiencing a lot of new, different, confusing emotions, but she’s holding on and she’ll do everything in her power to give her child everything she never had. Check out the whole “30” album, it sure to sweep through the next award season when it’s eligible.
Tory Lanez - Lady of Namek: The talented Canadian is back at it on his R&B shit. Prepping for his new album “Alone at Prom” he dropped this 80’s-themed bop (with an accompanying 80’s-themed high school music video). It sounds like teen heartbreak but is appropriate for all ages of heartbreak. It’s an upbeat sad boy bop and it’s a top tier tune.
Isaiah Rashad ft Project Pat & Juicy J - RIP Young (Remix): The TDE artist dropped a Deluxe version of his most recent album “The House is Burning” called “The House is Burning [Homies Begged]” alluding to the fact that his crew begged him to release the extra songs. This one is a remix of a track on the original album. The original sampled Project Pat so it was only right to have the Memphis legend hop on the track with his bro Juicy J (who had a writing or producing credit on the sampled track). The final product with the three of them is gold. As originators of the sound Pat & J add a familiar flavor and a welcome addition to an already dope track. This one’s even doper.
Big Boi & Sleepy Brown - Animalz: This like the smooth hip-hop version of “Bad Touch” by Bloodhound Gang. The ATLiens letting the shawtys know that we just animals and we just should do what animals do, hump all night long. Take that bonnet off and come get this gorilla glue.
French Montana ft. Rick Ross & John Legend - Touch The Sky: Montana! The African-American rapper and Bad Boy signee released a new A-List feature-filled project this week called “They Got Amnesia” which refers to how some people may have forgotten about his greatness. He addresses this on a song, all the artists whose rise he’s been a part of. All of the dimes he’s dated. Just a lil reminder. On “Touch The Sky” French and Ross spit over a beautiful beat laced with strings while John Legend holds down the hook. It’s celebratory, it fits the overall theme of the album, and it’s fucking fantastic! Check out these other standouts from “They Got Amnesia”:
Stuck In the Jungle (ft. Lil Durk & Pop Smoke)
Didn’t Get Far (ft. Fabolous)
Losing Weight
Max B - Porno Music 3: One of those rappers connected to the aformentioned French Montana is his fellow Coke Boy Max B (currently incarcerated). He released a new mixtape this week called “Negro Spirituals”. On the tape, Max does some rapping, some singing and the beats range from 80’s old-school hip hop to 90’s R&B. On this one he goes on on the New Edition “Can You Stand the Rain” sample that he used previously on Porno Music and Porno Music 2 (I hadn’t heard either, but went back and listened and Max really got the harmonies hittin on PM3). Max sings to his boo thang and his shawty reciprocates by vowing to hold it down for his full 75 year sentence.
Freddie Gibbs ft. Jadakiss - Black Illuminati: Coming off a banner year that saw him receive a Grammy-nomination for Best Rap Album, Gangsta Giibbs is gearing up to drop a new project “SSS” in the not too distant future. Possibly appearing on that album is this collab with Jadakiss “Black Illuminati” a hookless silky track with Fred & Jada finding a pocket that shows them at their best. A lil boom-bappy, a lil R&B singer melody in the background. This is one of the best tracks to drop in 2021, no kizzap (I’ll see myself out...)
KAYTRANADA ft. H.E.R. - Intimidated: Kaytranada released a lil 3-pack this week called “Intimidated”. The self-titled track features multi-hyphenate H.E.R. who holds down the producer’s wavy electro-bop which has a piano throughline with drums dropping in and out. Gabby sings to her bae about time and love and shit, but just like me homie prolly vibing to this A1 beat. (Shoutout to H.E.R tho! It’s really H.E.R.!)
Snoop Dogg, Redman & Method Man ft. Nefirtitti Avanni - Alright: The ageless wonder Snoop Doggy Dogg dropped an album this week called Algorithm which he performs on but also acts as a curator for other artists to get their shit off. I even saw a life-sized cutout of dog at Raising Cane’s (this niggas’s everywhere). On Alright he let’s Red & Meth do what Red & Meth do while also adding a verse from newcomer Nefirtitti Avanni who also does her thug thang and hangs with the legends. Also from “Algorithm”:
Make Some Money (with Fabolous & Dave East)
Go To War (with Blxst)
GYU (AUGUST 08 ft. Ty Dolla $ign & Bino Rideaux)
Big Subwoofer (with Ice Cube, Too Short & E-40)
Murder Music (ft. Benny The Butcher, Jadakiss & Busta Rhymes)
Get My Money (ft. Prohoezak)
Rod Wave - By Your Side: Rod Wave has bounced back nicely after falling through that stage. His most recent win was being featured in Yung Miami’s song as someone she one to give the kitty to (he references that on this song as his baby mama wasn’t feeling that). This is a country rap tune, it’s exactly what we expect from Mr. Wave. He even sings a Green Day, Blink 182-esque 90’s rock riff. How he continues to put out songs that sound like this, that are still dope and also sound different, baffles me. The Wave don’t stop!
Morray ft. Benny The Butcher - Never Fail: Another new artist riding a similar Wave as Rod (See what I did there? Don’t 4get the pause/unpause talm bout riding rods n shit). Morray uses a speedy flow on this one to talk about all the money he’s been making, how he came up from the bottom, and how he won’t blow his one shot. Benny, who recently signed a multi-million dollar deal with Def Jam, talks that street talk, brick talk, the trappings of fame (and the spoils). Not a combo I would have thought up, but it’s fucking marvelous.
Sauce Walka - Relationship Counseling: Sauce Walka released a new project this week called “Drill Spill” (I call a lot of these drops “projects” because the lines between albums and mixtapes are blurred now that everything is on streaming services). This one is Sauce’s remix of Ghost Town DJ’s smash hit “My Boo”. The song alternates between Sauce rapping and the original track playing over this new beat. If you like Houston, sauce (of any kind) and/or walking, go check out Sauce Walka’s “Drill Spill.”
The Cool Kids & Larry June - All or Nothing: Now this is a combo if proposed I would say this might sound dope af just by the artists. Then you take a “Fuck Wit Dre Day” sample and you already know what time it is. Need I say more? (no nigga, hush)
BRS Kash - Spend It: The LVRN signee, known for the recent hit fellatio anthem “Throat Baby” is back with another club banger for your headtop. He compliments a young lady’s teeth, smile, waist and ass. For keeping her mouth and cheeks in perfect condition he is willing to Spend It and throw stacks of cash on to her ever so perfect plump rump. This will be blaring through jiggle joint speakers all over the country for the next year.
Smoke DZA - Arrived: When I heard this, shit was so catchy, I ran it back twice. Smoke’s opening delivery is unique and flows with this new wave beat we don’t always hear him on. He’s still spitting that shit tho, bars on bars on bars. The beat is melodic, the flow has a melodic feel, but it’s rap rap, no doubt. Tough Tune.
Masego & Devin Morrison - Yamz: Jazz musician and R&B/Soul singer Masego, collabbed with Devin Morrison to ask can he get to the Yamz. He got bills to pay! In my hood Yamz refer to ass or actually yams (cousins of sweet potatoes, or not cousins depending on who you ask). Unless these niggas slinging dick for money, Yamz seems to refer to some type of currency. They don’t got time to waste on social media they gotta get to them Yamz (...which sounds like they mean ass “from that shape and how they move”... They must be selling sausage…)
August 08 - Keep Me Around: I first heard August 08 on a track called “Bussdown Your Soul” and I been a fan ever since. I saw he was featured on Snoop’s album “Algorithm” too. This solo track is a confession to his shawty. He lets her know that it kinda turns him on when she’s mad, he keeps shawty around because he’s hella crazy in love with her (and she keeps him around because the feeling must be mutual).
