The Hit List Week 31: (Nov 21 - Nov 28)
Anuel AA - Real Hasta la Muerte: Puerto Rican arist Anuel AA released a new album this week called “Las Leyendas Nunca Mueren” which I think translates to “Legends Never Die”. To be honest, I didn’t plan on listening to this one because I don’t understand the words (it’s in Spanish obvi). I’m glad I did because this shit is heat! Couple samples you’ll recognize, all the beats hard and Triple A’s flow fits like a glove (not like that one time…) Real Hasta la Muerte is the opening track, it’s 10 minutes long and it’s an epic musical journey, Anuel spitting in flurries over a Stomp/Tear Da Club Up-esque beat. Tough Tune. Check out these other standouts from “Las Leyendas Nunca Mueren”:
1942
McGregor
Llorando en un Ferrari
Mi Voz Cuesta un Billón
Última Canción
Kota The Friend - Grateful: Kota’s had a whirlwind year so far. One of the best independent artists today, he’s gearing up to drop a new project soon and this looks to be the first official offering. He talks about self-care, grinding, thanking the Lord, celebrating abundance and being grateful for the blessings (and the setbacks as they offer lessons).
Imperativ ft. Benny the Butcher & Rick Hyde - Under The Scope: The Butcher Coming! The Buffalo spitter (along with frequent collaborator Rick Hyde) dropped a track doing what they do best: street bars over boom bap beats. And with producer Imperativ, they put a nice gloss on a familiar sound. Like Mom adding jalapenos to her mac and cheese, extra fire!
Method Man - New Old School: The Wu-rapper/actor is busy playing the sheisty lawyer nigga on Power Book 2: Ghost but still found time to drop this track that sounds exactly like the title “New Old School”. It has a Run DMC bop to it and also this lil futuristic bounce that drops in and out.
SpotemGottem ft. Hurricane Wisdom - Got A Lil Older: Sampling music goes back to the beginning of music (prolly, iono I wasn’t there playa) but recently rappers have been sampling more current hits. The biggest of these songs (I think) is Lil Uzi Vert’s Sanguine Paradise which dropped in 2019 and sampled Mykko Montana & K Camp’s hit “Do It” which dropped in 2012. Now we have SpotemGottem (of BeatBox fame) sampling JayDaYoungan’s hit “23 Island” which dropped in 2019. Spotem talks about his growth, getting a lil older but his heart got a lil colder cuz niggas tried to fuck him over. Hurricane Wisdom serves up a smooth, contrasting, melodic sound to the end of the track. This is a really good one.
DJ Fresh & Nef The Pharoah ft. Fmb Dz & Beeda Weeda - On The Run: I been listening to Nef the Pharoah since… For awhile now aight! My memory’s bad… Anyway, when I saw he dropped “The Tonite Show with Nef The Pharoah”, a collab project with DJ Fresh, I had to give it a listen and it didn’t disappoint. Full of that West Coast, Bay Area, Old School-New School mashup sound, this was my favorite project to drop this week (along with Anuel AA even tho I have no clue with the nigga is saying). “On The Run” features Beeda Weeda who Nef shouted out a couple years back when he remade Beeda’s song “My Way”. This one has that old school feel, the guys ask they main damie to catch a case and go on the run with them. They want her to be the Bonnie to they Clyde, pull up with stick and let it hit. Down ass chicks only on that side. Other highlights from “The Tonite Show with Nef The Pharoah”:
Load That Bitch Up
I Make It Make Sense
I Need Cheese
Don’t Think You’re Smart
With My People
MURS ft. Del The Funky Homosapien - GOATs (Remix): One of the West Coast’s finest, MURS, dropped a remix to his song GOATs adding Del The Funky Homosapien. The song has a funky feel, a message, it’s political (that’s vintage MURS), he has some shit to get off his chest and he does. Shit is soulful, west-coast, silky boom-bap and MURS proudly proclaims his GOAT status. Del adds a wavy multi-layered verse as he demands his respect, flexes his versatility, and even spits something for the ladies. Tough Tune.
Boosie Badazz - Free Top: Boosie Boo been making headlines for everything but music for a lil bit now. From procuring goods and services from his followers on Twitter to getting banned on Instagram (twice) to his neverending feud with Lil Nas X (and the memes that pop up) it’s good to see Badazz getting back to his roots. He actually dropped 2 full-length projects this week “Mississippi” and “Back 2 BR”. “Back 2 BR” sounds a lil more polished (Mississippi sounds unmixed on Apple Music). And this shit got some slappers! One of them is “Free Top” and it’s a call to free his Homie Lil Top (not an anthem for no-cost fellatio). Also from “Back 2 BR”:
Stand Off (Remix) [ft. Tgkommas]
Don’t Ask Me (ft. Webbie)
Dat Raq
Cut Up (ft. Mouse On The Track)
Mr. Grim Reaper
I Feel It (ft. Tootie Raww)
Polaroid Picture
Miss Who We Was
Nick Grant - 24/8: Carolina reaper/rapper Nick Grant dropped a 4-track EP this week called “Carolina Diaries”. One of the most underrated young MCs he goes in over keys and a soul sample and talks about his come up his hiatus and how this song (and EP) is his triumphant return. They mighta forgot about him, counted him out, but this the come back.
24hrs ft. $tupid Young - W.T.B.A.: Rapper turnt sanger formerly known as Royce Rizzy dropped “Real Walker 1.5” this week, a sequel to “Real Walker” an album he dropped earlier this year. This one is more like Part 2 as it features all new tracks. On WTBA him and $tupid Young asking Where The Bosses At? They don’t talk to workers, they would like to speak with the manager. They came from the bottom, sleeping in cars and shit. Now they on top and they only deal with other top-tier individuals.
