The Hit List Week 33: (Dec 6 - Dec 12)
Russ ft. Papoose: Bucket Hat Low: Russ came through with a late album of the year candidate with “CHOMP 2”. On paper it’s the best album of the year for sure with production from Boi-1da Preme, 9th Wonder, Hit-Boy, Harry Fraud, Alchemist and himself (swag!). And features from Jadakiss, Lloyd Banks, Conway, Benny the Butcher, Big Sean, Ghostface Killah, Snoop, Jay Elec, The Game, Cyhi, Westside Gunn, Mozzy, Ransom, and more. Russ got some of the best lyricists across mad generations. Whole album is hip-hop at its finest. “Bucket Hat Low” stands out for the uptempo beat and Papoose’s onslaught to start the track and Russ matching the pace and killing the beat as well. DO yourself a favor and go listen to “CHOMP 2” front to back, no skips.
Lucky Daye - Candy Drip: Recently discussions broke out about who is the King of R&B among the young generation. Lucky Daye was mentioned as one of the leaders and this week he blessed us with a new track. A wavy bop dedicated to his main damie. Shawty is like a candy drip IV. Straight to the vein. Wine with her at nighttime and going deep into her shine (or vajine), leaves Lucky fiendin for more.
Rick Ross ft. Benny The Butcher - Rapper Estates: Ross finally dropped his newest effort “Richer Than I Ever Been” (sans the original cover) and “Rapper Estates” is easily one of the best tracks. When you hear the beat you like “oh this a classic Ross beat” but also it’s got just enough boom-bap that you think “this is perfect for Benny.” And the two gentlemen do what they do best. Definitely 2 MCs I wanted to see collab and the chemistry is evident. Go check out “Richer Than I ever Been”.
EARTHGANG - American Horror Story: Would these niggas drop “Ghetto Gods” already? They keep teasing us with these loosies over the past year. Gimme that shit Doc! American Horror Story is soulful and substantive, they start talking about slavery and go through they family history to them getting money and chickens in the present. Dreamville got the calendar filled up with release dates and EARTHGANG up next (God willing).
Tory Lanez - Pink Dolphin Sunset: Tory really did the damn thing with his new project “Alone At Prom”. 80’s themed and featuring familiar sounds spiced up with Tory’s secret sauce (pause, unpause, fast forward). I personally love R&B Tory the best and I was like 2 tracks in when I bought the whole album. This is an early highlight as Tory is thinking bout shawty, he’s head over heels and is missing her and trying to get her back after she caught him fingerbanging the prom queen. He’s asking for a 2nd chance even though he knows he gon get played in the end. The beat, Tory, and the background vocals come together to make music magic. If you’re reading this you already heard “Alone At Prom” and you know it’s flames.
Alicia Keys ft. Pusha T - Plentiful: “KEYS”: Miss Alicia dropped a new double disc this week with the first half being more slow tempo with live instruments and the second half more uptempo, electronic remakes of the songs with some original tracks on each part. “Plentiful” is unlike all the rest. It has one of the only rap features, is the only fast song on the first half (called Originals) and samples “The Truth” by Beanie Sigel. It’s the opening track on the album for good reason, because it’s one of thee best! On the second part I really loved Come For Me ft. Khalid & Lucky Daye, you know what time it is on that one.
midwxst - Bluffing: New Artist midwxst has been buzzing in 2021. This one is a poppy, melodic track where he talks about his anxiety, and how hard it is to open up and find love. It’s a love-pain song, we can all relate. It’s very JuiceWrld-esque but midwxst carves out his own unique sound.
PnB Rock ft. Lil Baby & Young Thug - Eyes Open: The Philly artiste came through with an EP called “2 Get You Thru The Rain”. Hopefully this means we’ll get something full-length from him soon (man double pause, chill out bro bro, you doin alot… my bad G). This one is an inspirational track with a choir that was leaked previously with Thugger on it but the final version also adds Lil Baby. It’s a super dope track that encourages us all to dream while we’re awake, and to chase our dreams.
Wiz Khalifa, Cardo & Sledgren - More Than Ever: Repping the other side of Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh artist Wiz Khalifa dropped a collab tape with producers Cardo Got Wings and Sledgren appropriately titled “Wiz Got Wings”. One of my favorite tracks is “More Than Ever” a trippy, bouncy track which finds Young Khalifa talking bout how he unwinds: smoking, dranking, and spending quality time with baddest of bitties.
NBA YoungBoy & Birdman - How Ya Know: After a false start last week Louisiana superstars YoungBoy and Birdman released their collab tape “From The Bayou”. They go back and forth with verses in the beginning of the project with YB doing a lot of the heavy lifting in the latter portion. On this one YB talks about the shawtys who think they love him, but he just dropping dick off and a lil bit of cash (5 stacks to be exact.) She think about YB everytime she wit her dude. But he just care about his money, diamonds and playing video games like 2K, Call of Duty and Madden.
Ron Suno & Zay Munna - What They Gon Say: I don’t know where Ron & Zay are from but my guess is NYC because this is NY Drill at it’s finest. With a unique beat that sounds like a redneck dude from Mississippi lit off that moonshine playing a fiddle in the background. This a dope track that sounds like Sheff & Sleepy cooked it up but it was Ron & Zay and they got the sauce fa sho.
A Boogie wit Da Hoodie - Glasses: Talk about an album the streets is waiting for. A Boogie’s upcoming “A Boogie vs. Artist” was announced like a year ago and still ain’t out. Luckily the merciful A Boogie gave us a taste (c’mon bruh!) with “B4AVA” which is an EP that serves as a pre-album. It features the previously released track “24 Hours” with Lil Durk and new tracks. On “Glasses” he encourages his shawty to put on her Cartier glasses so she can see all the moves he making. All the Richard Mille watches, all the hoodies, the diamonds, the foreign exotic cars, all of it. Go check out “B4AVA”, that’s all we getting till AVA come out.
Zacari & Justin Nozuka - Blossom: TDE singer Zacari released a 4-track EP this week called “Sol”. Just like its title, it’s heat! No skips. On “Blossom” Zac talks about a love helping him blossom (makes sense don’t it?) He hasn’t felt excitement in a long time, but shawty showing him the possibilities, a new energy. He was uninspired but she gave him a new feeling, a new meaning, she accepted him and respected his boundaries and now he’s blossoming due in part to her Tender Loving Care. Justin Nozuka has a golden voice and his shawty helped him open his mind up and she also allows him to be himself. We all yearn for someone who we can be ourselves around. Who love us for who we truly are. And when we find that, we blossom. Tough Tune!
Hotboii - Reminisce: Hotboii released his sophomore album this week, “Life of a Hotboii”. It was in the carousel on the iTunes store, so I took it for a spin and was pleasantly surprised. I really like “Reminisce”, a track that finds the Florida artist taking a trip down memory lane and remembering the grind that led to his current shine. The tough times, the heartbreak, the old friends and the journey to the riches. Go stream “Life of a Hotboii” if you like getting money and love The Lord.
2KBaby ft. Mozzy - Old Shoes: I been following 2KBaby for a couple years now and was excited when I saw he dropped his album, “First Quarter” this week. With features from Marshmello to Mozzy he’s got something for everybody. The album is melodic and super catchy, and it’s one of my favorite projects to drop this week. “Old Shoes” (with the aforementioned Mozzy) is a Sonny Digital produced track where the guys encourage us to take a panoramic view of things and not get stuck in the moment. Bad times will come but we can get through, you gon’ be down on yo dick, homies gon’ die (RIP Del) but hold on and the rough patch will blow through.
JuiceWrld - You Wouldn’t Understand: We got a 2nd posthumous album from JuiceWrld on the 2nd anniversary of his untimely death. There was also an event held in his hometown Chicago with some of his friends in the industry performing and people telling stories about how much of a good dude he was. “You Wouldn’t Understand” is him really showing his rockstar side. He pops, he sips, he pours his lean and he doesn’t give a fuck about a goddam thing. RIP Juice. There’s a hole in music where him and XXX were building their empires. Trippie will work to carry the torch.
Big Boi & Sleepy Brown ft. Cee-Lo Green - Intentions: Big Boi and Sleepy Brown released a new project this week called “The Big Sleepover” (tied with Wiz Got Wings for the most correctly titled projects of the week). Looking up the video, this track apparently came out 2 years ago but it’s all good, we highlighting the album here. Big & Sleep released quite a few of the tracks in the lead up to the drop. They were all catchy and Big’s Bars with SB’s silky vocals go together like lamb & tuna fish (see Big Daddy [Fat Sax] see what I did there?) GO stream “The Big Sleepover” if you like Rap, R&B, busting nuts, and/or midday naps that leave you feeling refreshed.
TM88 & Pi’erre Bourne - Yo!Gurt: Producer TM88 of 808 Mafia and Producer/Artist Pi’erre Bourne dropped a collab tape called “Yo!88”. Both men assist with the production (and you can hear their respective signature sounds throughout) and Pi’erre handles the vocals with some assists from Wiz & Young Nudy. Yo!Gurt has a Pi’erre-sounding beat, and finds PB talking bout his shawty who licks his yogurt like Yoplait (I think this means she swallowing kids). I’ll use the often used adjective smooth to describe the track and it’s super appropriate cuz this track is buttery.
