The Hit List WEEK 34: (Dec 13 - Dec 19)
Chief Keef - Like It’s Yo Job: Legendary Chicago Rapper/Producer Chief Keef dropped a new album this week called “4NEM”. Shit is a certified banger! On “Like It’s Yo Job” He samples Three 6 Mafia’s classic “Slob On My Knob”. Chief Keef + SOMK = something you need to hear ASAP.
TyFontaine - Numb: Newcomer TyFontaine croons to his shawty on “Numb”. He lets shawty know he can get her wavy too. He plays it cool, aloof, oblivious even, and he knows she likes that he aint all up on her all the time. Smooth lil track.
FKA Twigs ft. The Weeknd - Tears in the Club: First off, I didn’t even know The Weekend was on the song when I pressed play, but then I heard his background vocals meshing so well with the foundation that Ms Twigs laid. It’s one of those upbeat love pain bops. Usually sadboy/girl songs are slower but this is radio-ready, club-ready, something all the bitties gonna shake they ass too, “Ya move ya body to the synth and the drums baby” The Weekend’s part is heavenly. Whoever mixed his vocals added some sauce to it and he really glazes the donut (no pause). Shoutout to UK and Canada linking for something beautiful. FKA kills it throughout, and the accompanying video…sheesh!
Pee Wee Longway - Starve: ATL Ho! A1 Beat, hypnotic, with PeeWee switching it up a bit as the track has some NY Drill elements and he tailors his flow to ride the wave of the track. He talks that street shit but the main thread is about how if shawty starve she don’t want you to eat either. When old tings be mad at your shine. Gotta keep it moving like Shawn Kemp and Marshall Faulk tho (no shade to whomever).
Unfook ft. Blac Youngsta - Silent: Most Tough Tunes start with a Tough Beat and “Silent” is no different. This one is for the ladies, YSL’s Unfoonk wants shawty's L-O-V-E and to make love to her all night. He wants to know if she’s the one for him and will she put her phone on Silent (so they can make sweet love by the fire in peace of course). Blac Youngsta has a gangsta shawty that be playing with his emotions sometimes. If she stays down, he has no problem breaking bread with her.
Mike Dean & Rich The Kid - BLUE CHEESE: Bro, Mike Dean been that nigga (he might just be king of the nigga whites) and he’s been buzzin recently because of Kanye and us wanting Donda and Ye not dropping and Mike Dean tweetin some shit (I forgot exactly how it all went down. I’ve drank and smoked quite a bit since Donda dropped). Most recently, at the Ye-Drake “Free Larry Hoover” concert he was doing live instrumentation and that shit was one of the highlights of the show. For “BLUE CHEESE” he cooked up a top tier beat and called Rich the Kid to lay the vocals and it's a pretty damn sweet track. Check it out.
Saint Jhn - The Best Part of Life: Saint Jhn has proven he’s no flash in the pan. He’s here to stay. He’s back again with a lovely love song to his main damie. The Best Part of Life is when he’s with her. He even promises to be with her forever (human lifespan is dumb long so forever’s unlikely, but maybe Saint Jhn is hella loyal like penguins who find a mate and stay together 4 life).
Tierra Whack - Heaven: Philly Philly! Tierra has been dropping a series of EPs, 1st “RAP?” then “POP?” now “R&B?”. I wonder if these will be released together at some point… Either way “Heaven” immediately stuck out on “R&B?” (and not just because it’s the 1st track). Nice slow tempo snap beat where she sings that Heaven has all her favorite people and she wants to go there. Angels watching over her, she was blind and now she can see. She’s grateful for all the things the angels have done for her and wants to go do a show for them. Tough Tune.
Gucci Mane - Long Live Dolph: Gucci released what seems like his 10th album this year with “So Icy Christmas”. It includes all his New 1017 signees BigWalkDog, Bic Fizzle, Hotboy Wes & Enchanted (Free Pooh Sheisty). “Long Live Dolph” is a dedication to slain Memphis MC Young Dolph. He condemns senseless violence and encourages us to give people flowers while they’re here. He acknowledges that it’s harder for those trying to come out from poverty so we all gotta do better to help each other elevate vs. destroying our own. Co-Produced by Zaytoven & Metro Boomin.
Joyner Lucas - My Escape: One of the best lyricists of this generation is back with some new shit. What makes this one unique is Joyner made a bold move and hopped on a Detroit-type beat and he more than held his own. It’s his usual peak lyricism with a twist as he slows down his delivery and let’s the beat breathe. Issa bop
Aaliyah ft. The Weeknd - Poison: Aaliyah’s estate made some moves recently and added her catalogue to streaming platforms. Another move made was taking her unreleased vocals and creating this collab with The Weekend. It’s a nice lil classic-style love song. We previously heard another posthumous Aaliyah collab with a different Canadian megastar, Drake, on “Enough Said”. This one’s a different vibe but is saucy in it’s own way.
Roddy Ricch ft. Kodak Black & 21 Savage - Hibachi: Roddy Ricch dropped his much anticipated sophomore effort “Live Life Fast” this week. This one sticks out for all the star power on the track and the 3 amigos kill the beat. They take bad bitties to hibachi while wearing Nike Huaraches (all shawty wanted was some meat). They don’t care about the brokies, they got too much money to hate.
DJ Kay Slay ft. Papoose, AZ, Mysonne & Tre Williams - In My Soul: So we have legends on the track for this concept song. When it was first playing the only thing to describe how I was feeling was the mind blown emoji. I can’t believe they did that. First, this was featured on Kay Slay’s new album “The Soul Controller”. As one of the most influential DJ’s in Hip-Hop history (and more specifically NY Radio) he’s able to link with the best of the best when he’s cooking up a project. “In My Soul” is a social justice song (right up Mysonne’s lane) and each man plays the role of a different historical figure. Papoose as Malcolm X, AZ as MLK and Mysonne as Huey P Newton. They describe their life stories, their social justice efforts and philosophies, and their untimely deaths at the hands of gun violence. Tough Tune. I wish they had this track when I was in school. I woulda Aced my History tests instead of whatever bullshit grades I got (my Social Studies grades was aight but I was more of a Math, Science nigga).
Burna Boy ft. Wizkid B. D’Or: Burna Boy The African Giant is back at it with the Prince of Afro Beats, Wizkid. Of course they cooked up a Top Tier Tune. Afrobeat, Burna sings, WizKid raps and harmonizes, and this one is a club-ready track that will play on the radio non-stop and at every Nigerian wedding for the next year minimum. Jambo! (I hope that’s not racist. I’m an American Black and they taught us that for Kwanzaa. It was Michael B. Jordan who taught me if anyone’s to blame it’s him…)
