The Hit List Week 37: (Jan 3 - Jan 9)
The Weeknd ft. Tyler, The Creator - Here We Go Again: Starboy dropped a semi-surprise album this week called “Dawn FM” and I bought it soon as it dropped bc The Weeknd is in that autobuy tier for me. It’s got that 80-s wave sound with some pop elements and some dark elements basically a lil somethin’ for The Weeknd’s entire fanbase. Even the Jim Carrey parts had ya boy in a tizzy, like “this dope!” On this track, he utilizes one of the few features, Tyler. Abel proclaims that his new girl is a movie star (some have speculated who it is… You got google!) Tyler uses the track to let his bae know that she gonna sign that prenup (and he repeats himself for emphasis). Go check out “Dawn FM” if you haven’t already.
Gunna & 21 Savage - thought i was playing: The other big drop of the week was Gunna’s “DS4EVER”. This one had a ton of features, has some slow stuff, some uptempo, some for the niggas and some for the bitties. On this standout, 21 savage spits one of the best verses on the entire project. Also from “DS4”:
private island
how you did that (ft. Kodak Black)
livin wild
you & me (ft. Chloe Bailey)
south to west
idk that bitch (ft. G Herbo)
so far ahead > empire
Montana of 300 - Let Me Put My Gun Down: I been fucking wit Montana for years now so when I saw he dropped a project “Rap God” I had to check it out. I remember when I first came across him. I was impressed by both his punchlines and his substance. He really be talking bout something. His rhymes have depth, he get ignant too but he gives you the medicine with the candy. This track “Let Me Put My Gun Down” is another type of track he’s done well for years, thug love songs. On this one, he tells his shorty that he’s ready to get it poppin but he gotta put the strap down first. He got the blick in the Moncler and he’s all about safety, so after he carefully puts his legal firearm out of arms reach, they can proceed to do some nasty shit including but not limited to, spittin in the mouth, choking, thumb in the butt, hair pulling, rough doggystyles, and she’s for sure having multiple orgasms. Check out these other highlights from “Rap God”:
Rap God
The Last Dance
Omg (ft. Arsonal)
Up In the Sky
The Boy That Never Sold His Soul
Wheels Fall Off
Know My Pain
Mama
Shang Tsung ft. (Talley of 300 & J-Real)
Proud Of My Pain
Love Me When I’m Gone
Gucci Mane - Fake Friends: Guap don’t stop! With his young son Ice Davis in tow Gucci takes us on a journey. He gives advice to his son, how niggas gonna switch up on him and some of the people you thought was your friends gonna turn out to be phonies. He does this all over a beat that samples Whodini’s hit “Friends”. Tough Tune.
Koache ft. The Game & Demrick - Push: Some motivational West Coast music with an Old Skool sound. Got the talkbox and everything “You can do it, you can do it, you can do it, you gotta (push it)”. The guys went from pushing packs to pushing tracks. They push through the pain and now they getting that change.
AzizTheShake ft. Jiles, Meech BOLD - TOLEDO: From the West to the Midwest (shoutout O-Hi-O!). These 3 gentlemen display top-tier lyricsm on a dope beat. They get money & burn hella herb in Toledo, Kentucky, East Coast, West Coast, Worldwide. No bridge needed just straight bars for 3+ minutes.
2 Chainz ft. 42 Dugg - Million Dollars Worth of Game: I think we getting a Tity Boi project soon (I think I read that somewhere). Another D to the A collab (after Tee Grizz & Yachty and Lil Baby & Dugg). This one’s radio ready, club ready, strip club ready, something you can bump in the whip, at the gym. If this is any indication of what to expect on the 2 Chainz album, we’re in for a treat!
Kota The Friend - Dear Fear: NYC artist Kota The Friend has been teasing his new project for a hot lil minute and it’s set to drop soon. This one is a slow track carried by keys and snare. Kota gets into his deep bag (per usual) talking about healing, reading, improving his communication and moving on from past relationships. It’s a song about growth, swerving potholes, having actions be in line with your words and knowing that pain is inevitable but having the will to persevere.
Kid Ink - Fenty Secrets: Bat Gang! I think Kid Ink’s gearing up for a release as this is his second drop in as many weeks. This one is a slower tempo bop for the ladies. The title is a play on Victoria Secrets replacing Vicky with Queen Ri. Kid Ink tryna get shawty out the lingerie so they could have a little fun.
Azizi Gibson ft. Freddie Gibbs - Hate To Say It: As soon as this came on I was like “Oh this beat hard!” Azizi encourages his bitties to hold it down as he’s one of a kind and she’s one of many he pipe down. He lists the names of all his tings on the hook (it’s actually the list that DMX spits on his collab with Dru Hill “What These Bitches Want” but he prolly got the same amount, different names). Gangsta Gibbs spits that dope boy shit, and still dedicates a few bars to the bitties to weave into the theme of the track.
