The Hit List Week 39: (Jan 17 - Jan 23)
Key Glock - Proud: Young Dolph's crew, Paper Route Empire, released a project in his memory this week called "Long Live Dolph". This track by his right hand man Key Glock is the highlight of the project. He talks about loss, wanting to get revenge but also understanding it won't bring his dog back. He knows Dolph is looking down on him and he promises to make him Proud. LLD!
Rod Wave - Cold December: The ascendant Rod Wave dropped this track amidst expressing his frustrations with the music business and contemplating retirement. The music is still top tier and this is right up his alley, melodic, keys and strings, some rock elements, and about some emotional shit. He talks about falling in love after fame. And now that he found his bae, there will be no more Cold Decembers.
NBA Youngboy - Expensive Taste: YB released a new project called “Colors” this week and got all the young bulls going crazy. He shows his range throughout the project melodies and also hard bars. On this one it’s a mixture of both, smooth beat and AI finds a pocket and spits speedy bars about everything from the ladies, to the hammers, to the molly.
Guapdad 4000 - I Need Bands: Bro! Guapdad sampled LL Cool J’s smash hit “I Need Love” and it’s immaculate. He wants to bust nuts but his ode is to the bread. He needs bands. Get in the way and you gon get them hands.
Ralfy the Plug ft. Drakeo The Ruler - Who Car We Using: Drakeo the Ruler’s brother and fellow rapper Ralfy The Plug dropped an album this week “Pastor Ralfy 2”. It’s my favorite album to drop in 2022 so far, with banger after banger. It’s all I been listening to at the gym this week and this one features The Ruler himself. The subject: who car they using to hit a lick. I imagine the choice would be between something fast (but the space might be limited), you could go with an SUV but that might fuck up the getaway. They prolly decide on a minivan as they can roll up incognito and then dip out without attracting attention. Check out these other standouts from “Pastor Ralfy 2”:
The Truth Hurts
Uncomfortable (ft. DB Boutabag)
Sarah Lee (ft. Bla$ta)
Janitor
Ralfy
Preach
Keep Up
Paw Patrol
OMB Peezy - Never Leave: The Alabama-born, Sac-town spitter dropped an introspective bop . With a chipmunk vocal sample in the background and the keys he pours his heart out about everything from wanting to clap at opps to his homie promising he’ll never leave but losing him to the streets.
2 Chainz ft. MoneyBagg Yo & BeatKing - Pop Music: Tity 2 Chainz got an album dropping soon and he decided to bless us with another offering. Linking with the Strip Club King, BeatKing and the artist who had one of the best selling albums of 2021, Moneybagg Yo, he made a certified strip club anthem. Somebody is shaking ass to this as you’re reading this. Money falling at jiggle joints all across America. Also Moneybagg spits part of his verse like 2 Live Crew’s “Too Much Booty in the Pants”. Very apropo and Super dope!
iann dior ft. Lil Uzi Vert - V12: “Emo rapper” (I shouldn’t label him that so I used quotes) iann dior released a project this week called “on to better things”. I like how iann has carved out his own lane, he has that emo hip hop sound, but his music has a more upbeat vibe than a Juice Wrld or XXX. On this one, he enlists fellow sensation Lil Uzi to talk about how they beat the pussy up like a V12 (fast & strong). Both men enjoy wearing Rick Owens and rocking hella ice.
DaBaby - BookIt: DB been dropping a lot recently. That’s his MO though, he got tracks on deck. He encourages anyone who wants a show to book him. He also sees a shawty checking him out and expresses a desire to spend some quality time with her. He also warns the opps about his prowess with firearms and his willingness to use them.
Vado ft. Lloyd Banks & Dave East - Respect The Jux: NY artist Vado dropped a project this week called “Long Run, Vol. 2”. This one features fellow NYC heavyweights Banks and Dave East and a soul-sample beat that’s one of the best on his album. Sounds like some classic Wu shit.
Jay Critch - Buck 50: NYC up and comer (pause) Jay Critch released another loosie. With his signature flow he goes in over a tough beat. He knows only God can judge him. He also never runs into his opps at the bank (presumably because they’re broke and have no reason to be there).
Isaac Zale ft. Mick Jenkins & Blu - Somebody Dies: Strings kick off this beat and then Isaac comes on singing his heart out. He warns us all that if we fuck with his girl then Somebody Dies. Sturdy bars from Mickey Jinx and Blu (nice week for Bluski). Moral of the story: don’t step on toes.
Lil Bean - 4AM: Beat go crazy! Lil Bean uses a melodic flow to let his enemies know he will gun them down. He be getting packages, sending them to Alabama, and also picks up jewels for his main damie. He runs plays and drops top tier tunes. It’s go time.
Mach-Hommy - Maslow’s Hammer: Jersey mystery rapper Mach-Hommy released a followup to his critically acclaimed project “Pray For Haiti” this one titled “Dollar Menu”. It features street bars and boom bap beats, everything we expect from MH (Mach-Hommy not Marques Houston). On “Maslow’s Hammer” (another MH) he reps Dirty Jersey and Haiti over a haunting stripped down beat. He gets an assist from another dope rhymer (who remains uncredited but the nigga’s nice).
Peezy - Common Wealth: I saw Peezy featured on a couple projects this week. Then I saw he dropped a solo track. First thing that sticks out is the A1 beat. He displays an impressive flow that reminds me of my favorite Detroit artists (idk if that’s where he’s from) and I’m excited to see what he drops next.
Yung Bleu & Ne-Yo - Walk Through The Fire: I saw this track with two crooners from different generations and thought there’s no way I’ll like this shit. Boy was I wrong! (or Girl or They or We, that was a soft “Boy” pause). This shit is a perfect wedding 1st dance anthem. Talking bout, loving you through every moment, every wrinkle in time, making up for yesterday, fixing everything, walking through fire just to hear shawty say “I do”. This is a beautiful fucking song. And I If I ever get a woman to sign this ironclad prenup I have drafted, I’d get married and play this at my wedding fa sho.
Fatlip, Blu & Madlib - Gangsta Rap: Can’t go wrong with Madlib production. This track finds Fatlip & Blu reminiscing over a light, beach-vibey beat that has the sound of it being played on vinyl overlaid. They tryna smoke some herb, go balls deep in some clean booty and listen to Gangsta Rap.
