The Hit List Week 42: (Feb 7 - Feb 13)
Fivio Foreign ft. Kanye West & Alicia Keys - City of Gods: People saying this “Empire State of Mind” Part 2 (including Fivio himself). Beat stupid! This new New York anthem has Fivio claiming his spot as the king of the NY New Wave, the Drill Master (RIP Pop Smoke). Kanye spits a NY-themed verse and mentions Off The Grid (him and Fivio’s collab), Sunday Service, Balenciaga, Justin LaBoy, Sinatra, him and Drizzy squashing the beef, College Dropout and he makes sure to throw a shot at his wife’s new beau (who happens to work in NY).
Snoop Dogg ft. Nefertitti Avani & October London - Coming Back: Big week for the Doggfather. In addition to appearing with Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem 50 Cent & Mary J. Blige (with Anderson .Paak) in the Super Bowl halftime show (and 1st ever featuring Hip-Hop artists) he dropped a new album “BODR” (Back On Death Row). Why Back on Death Row? Because he bought the label (cue air horns)!!! The album features heavyweights in the game, legends and some of his frequent collaborators who’ve been featured on his last few albums October London & Nefertitti Avani. “Coming Back” has that classic West Coast sound with a pinch of P-Funk. Like the game, the crew wants to give it up but something keeps bringing them back. Go check out “BODR” You’re sure to find something you’ll love.
Pusha T - Diet Coke: Pusha prepping for an album drop this year and he starts the rollout with “Diet Coke”, a classic Push beat (with a Fat Joe-Joe Crack sample) and his signature, coke-snow-dope bars. PT lives by the mantra “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” and the formula surely ain’t broke.
Juicy J & Wiz Khalifa ft. Elle Varner - Why Do I Stay High: Taylor Gang rappers Juicy J and Wiz Khalifa released a joint project this week filled with Strip Club anthems and weed smoker’s odes appropriately titled “Stoner’s Night”. “Why Do I Stay High” samples Bone Thugs’ “If I Could Teach The World” (which also repeats the refrain Why Do I Stay High) and finds the guys (and Elle Varner) talking about one of their favorite pastimes, smoking them herbs nicka! Check out “Stoner’s Night” if you like strip club music and/or the occasional inhalation of marijuana smoke.
G Herbo - Locked In: Soul-sampled beat cheffed up by somebody from 808 Mafia (it’s few of them niggas). Herbo goes in about legal firearms, garden tools (hoes), staying woke, his writing skills, his marksmanship, his jewelry and his stacks and stacks of money.
$NOT ft. Joey Bada$$ - How U Feel: Rapper $NOT released an album this week called “Ethereal”. It’s an eclectic mix of sounds from modern production on “Doja” to this boom-bap track with another dollar sign artist Joey “Polyamory” Bada$$. It’s a combo you might not think would mesh but $NOT does his thing over the throwback beat and we already know what JB doing on a boom-bap beat. Go check out “Ethereal”.
Lil Durk - Ikea Rug: The Durk glow up continues! Seems like since the pandemic started Durk stock been going up. He got the Drake stimulus package, got engaged, became a beloved Twitter philosopher and is now set to go head to head with Kanye on 2-22-22 when he’s scheduled to drop an album on the same drop date of “Donda 2”. Only bumps in the road were the home invasion (him and his girl held it down) and the tragic death of King Von. When I saw the title of this track “Ikea Rug” I was skeptical, but once the keys set the mood off and the beat hit… Lord have mercy! Durk is going on double dates and hoping his ace beats his case. All he sees is a real nigga in the mirror. Stay tuned for the album drop on 2-22 as it may be the only one we get from a Chicago artist on that day (see what I did there?)
Lil Bean - when it fall down: Cali spitter Lil Bean released an album this week called “Forever Grateful”. Featuring some of Cali’s finest, it’s a polished, well-rounded project. My favorite is “when it fall down” a track about who’s gonna stick around when shit gets thick, all over a beat with a sample of Jodeci’s “Come & Talk To Me”. Go give “Forever Grateful” a listen.
SAINt JHN - For The Squadron: SQUAD! (Waka Voice) SAINt Jhn continues to prove he’s no flash in the pan. This one is a slow tempo bop for the crew. He decries goofy niggas and niggas who switch up. SJ stays solid with his day ones. Cats die everyday so he keeps the squad close as he works his way to the Warren Buffet, Steve Jobs billions. He’s a superstar nigga but he keeps it plain, he’s a Saint in real life (it’s his middle name).
Mary J. Blige ft. Dave East - Rent Money: Like Snoop, Queen Mary used her Super Bowl Halftime Show appearance to springboard a new project, “Good Morning Gorgeous”. It features a variety of artists from Fivio to Anderson .Paak. On this track she has fellow New Yorker Dave East hop on to talk about somebody who milked her for the dough and all she got for dog is some rent money. She interpolates Biggie’s “I’m Fuckin You Tonight” and Dave spits an A1 verse which includes Gin & Juice and a Snoop reference (full circle). He got a lil skrilla to CashApp shorty but he ain’t breaking bread, he encourages her to get it on her own.
Future - Worst Day: Toxic King, Future Hendrix (who is slated to EP Kanye’s “Donda 2” and appeared in that infinitely hilarious Civil War meme Kanye posted) released this track about Valentine’s Day and how it’s the worst day for a playa like him because he got too many bitties and he can’t spend time with em all. He can buy them anything they want, but they want that quality time and he can’t be in 2 places at once like Dr. Manhattan so he just gonna sit home and sip some Wock and leave em all on read (just for V-Day tho).
Jazmine Sullivan - BPW: Jazmine Sullivan released the deluxe of her critically acclaimed (and I think Grammy Nominated) project “Heaux Tales” this one adds “Mo Tales”. The interludes are outstanding, from Issa Rae to Mona (DontCallMeWhiteGirl bka “Why you being weird to me?”) to a Bro (Breaux, not Frank tho) but when BPW came on I had to get it on the Late Night Playlist because BPW is an acronym for the Best Pussy in the World. And while the song is amazing, I strongly advise you to gas your main thang and play this during sexy time. You’ll earn yourself the sloppiest of the toppy, you’re welcome. Check out “Heaux Tales: Mo Tales” and don’t skip the interludes.
Johan Lenox ft. Lancey Foux - I’m A Mess: When I first saw the song I thought it said John Lennon and Lancey Foux (which would been crazy) but it’s Johan Lennox. As soon as you press play you’re headfirst in an upbeat bop with JL admitting he’s a mess (as many of us are) and Lancey hops on halfway through with his unique voice to state that he too is a mess even though his diamonds are flawless. They may be a mess but the guys are blessed. Tough Tune.
Cautious Clay - High Risk Travel: I saw the Cautious Clay album “Deadpan Love” in the iTunes Store Thursday night when I looked to see who dropped and thought “He Black, Ima give this one a listen” and I was thoroughly impressed. An R&B/Soul project, my favorite is High Risk Travel, which features a simple snap beat with strings and a jazzy riff in the middle. He sings about a shawty that's been on his mind and him acting crazy with her gone. He knows he’ll be fine even though right now his heart is in two places.
Nana - Bet It Back: New Artist Alert! West Coast MC, Nana (not to be confused with my grandma NaNa) dropped this smooth tune with an important message that could save your life. At the dice game, the domino game or any unregulated street gambling game (like The World Series of Dice) if you take a loss bet it back (and if you win bet it back so you don’t ruffle feathers for pulling the hit and run move). Nana’s about to spin the block on your whole Top 5. He’s on fire, let this one slap.
Diplo & Miguel - Don’t Forget My Love: Just in time for V-Day and just prior to us finding out that Miguel reconciled with his wife Naznin (Amen!), he appeared on this collab with EDM superproducer Diplo. He implores shawty to remember the feel of his fingertips on her skin, and the way they kisses taste after they been boozing it up, how he raged into her love when she breathed him in, just so she can feel him when he’s not around. He asks her to Don’t Forget My Love while funky guitar chords lead into the EDM drop and drum loop. I guess it worked cuz Miggy got bae back. Ye take notes homie.
