The Hit List Week 45: (Feb 28 - Mar 6)
King Von ft. Lil Durk - Evil Twins: Long Live the King! King Von’s posthumous album “What It Means To Be King” dropped this week to rave reviews and some excellent numbers. Lots of highlights on this project but the song with his “twin” Lil Durk stuck out to me the most. Of course it’s about guns, spinning the block, shooting niggas, getting locked up (and not snitching) and bagging bitties. The beat is A1 (big beat guy) and the guys go back and forth delivering street bars, no hook needed.
Tee Grizzley - Beat The Streets: Love when the guys who graduated from the School of Hard Knocks give game to the next generation. If you don’t know Tee Grizz’s story and how he went from facing serious time for a smash and grab in Kentucky to becoming one of the hottest young rappers in the game with “First Day Out”, I strongly recommend doing ya Googles. On this one TG tells the truth about the street life. How it’s glamorized, presented as exciting, but you could end up paralyzed or dead if you make the wrong decisions. Smarten up before it’s too late is his message and he know the life well. Beat super hard too.
Cochise - Do It Again: They’re are some oldheads who aren’t fans of what’s been dubbed “mumble rap” and for y’all this aint for you. But if you fuck with Carti, Uzi, you just might like Cochise’s “Do It Again”. Trippy beat and Cochise acts as the Master of Ceremony guiding us through the track. He puts the pipe down so properly that shawty wants to Do It Again. If you lay pipe properly as well, this song’s for you.
Nez ft. Schoolboy Q - Let’s Get It: TDE in the building! This beat is quasi-triumphant, cinematic, haunting, and sounds like it could be played in a Horror flick right before the Black dude is about to get murked. With the phrase “Let’s Get It” repeated, this is a party track, club anthem, perfect for the radio, perfect to cruise to or play on your yacht full of bikini-clad bitties.
Diplo & RY X - Your eyes: Megastar DJ/Superproducer Diplo released a self-titled album this week and it’s damn good. I loved the track he released with Miguel as a single and this track with RY X reminds me of the Jersey Club shit I grew up on. Hi-Hat and Synth with RY X crooning about falling into a young ladies eyes (metaphorically of course bc that would hurt). Go check out “Diplo” by Diplo.
Joey Bada$$ - Head High: Bada$$ blessed us with a new track that finds him reminiscing. He laments broken families who don’t get fairytale endings. Fighting with the Devil and trying to keep his balance. How some of us hug the block but the block don’t hug us back. He also spits a dope story about meeting XXXtentacion and how X was a standup guy and how he reminded him of his main mans, the late Capital Steez. Tough Tune.
BabyTron - MainStream Tron: I first heard Tron on ShooterGangKony’s “Dead Artist” (One of my favorite tracks of 2021) and I was instantly a fan. He dropped a new project this week called “Megatron” (apropo for a Detroit rhymer). It’s a dope tape and if you know Tron, he samples popular melodies/theme songs and also makes tracks like MainStream Tron. The beat has an EDM-esque loop and he uses witty punches like “pull up and shoot from Jimmer range” and “feel like Van Gogh, I paint his block like a canvas”. He’s the Bitcoin Bandit and he cut everybody weird off. Go check out “Megatron”. Peachtree and December 1st are top tier tracks too.
Khalid - Last Call: Caesar Khalid is back with a new track (I smell an album coming). He says it’s not 2017 no more. He’s a grown boy now. He riding round, drop top, in an empty lot, doing donuts. He gets shawty the finest things, but it aint enough. He trying to rekindle the flame, so this is the Last Call. If she ain’t wit it, he bout to dip. But he trying to be patient.
DaBaby & NBA Youngboy - Little to A Lot: Two of the hottest artists, DaBaby & NBA YoungBoy, dropped “Better Than You”, a collab album, this week, looking to capitalize off each other's mega fanbases. My favorite track on the album is Little to A Lot. It’s introspective, a break from both of their normal subject matter, (although they both have tracks where they bare their souls) and they talk about the come up . Baby got his family on his back. He ascends even though they don’t show no love. He pours some out for his Dad and Big Bro in Heaven. YB been hustling and the reaper won’t get off his back. He been dealing with his pain and still managed to go from a Little to A Lot.
Nyck Caution, Kirk Knight & Charlie Heat - Casamigos Freestyle: Nyck @ Knight is back! With a dope beat from Charlie Heat to boot. Beat has some middle eastern influences. NC starts the party by sliding on the opps then spending quality time with a queen from Queens. He’s walking on sunshine. He’s off the ‘migos and he’s ready to fly. KK made hella bread then started a cult. He then purchased a whip (all cash of course). He pops bottles in the VIP section of the club but even in the dark corner of Last Lap you can still see the pain in his eyes.
Cool Kids - STRICTLY BUSINESS: Cool Kids reunited to drop a new album this week called “Before Shit Got Weird”. They captured the magic that propelled them to Hip-Hop’s stratosphere in the 2010’s. I’m a sucker for a sample and “STRICTLY BUSINESS” is a trippy, funky flip of Mystikal’s hit “It Ain’t My Fault”. The message: “you gotsta chill!” and coming from the Cool Kids the message makes [perfect sense. Check out “Before Shit Got Weird” it’s packed with heat.
