The Hit List #47: (Mar 14 - Mar 20)
Sy Ari Da Kid ft. T.I. & Cyhi The Prince - Verbatim: NYC/ATL spitter Sy Ari Da Kid released a new album this week called “The Shadow In the Shade”. Super dope project, loved the Jadakiss record and my favorite is this track with two other ATL Heavyweights, Tip & Cyhi. The storytelling is top tier by all 3 gentlemen, and the smooth downtempo beat sets the mood. “Told all my youngins look at the world, you can have it. Word for word this is exactly what happened.” Go check out “The Shadow In the Shade” expeditiously.
Rema & AJ Tracey - FYN: African superstar Rema dropped a loosie with one of the UK’s finest. FYN is an acronym for Fresh Young Nigga. Afrobeat with summertime vibes, Rema croons about chillin in Miami with the baddest baddies, and the freshest gear. Cats be hatin because he’s a FYN pushing a Beamer. He’s a small boy but he’s mighty. AJ is the youngest nigga doing the fly shit. Villas, Cuban cigars, Maybachs, he’s got it all. Niggas be hating but him and Rema have the remedy to purge their distress.
midwxst - switching sides: One of my favorite new artists, midwxst, dropped an album this week called “better luck next time” and it’s my favorite project of the week. midwxst cannot be categorized as he’s in a league of his own but he makes upbeat emo rap and the shit hits. I really like the single that dropped “i know you hate me” but wanted to highlight an album track. “switching sides” is peak break up music. He knows post-breakup, shawty is gonna blow up his phone and he just asking her to leave him the fuck alone. The beat had EDM elements and a looping clap that is a throughline. He says fuck the message that she types, he won’t reply because she’s always switching sides and he’s had enough of her mularkey.
Nigo & Lil Uzi Vert - Heavy: Producer Nigo is prepping an album drop and he’s released tracks with a bunch of A-Listers over the past month including A$AP Rocky, Cudi & Pusha. On this one, he gets Uzi on an NY Drill beat (say what?). Uzi raps about whipping foreigns like they Chevys and petty chicks who link with the opps. He still gets top in the club and his Moncler coat is Heavy (like the song’s title).
Soulja Boy - Vlone: Mr. TellEm himself released a new project this week “Big Draco 3”. He got some hard tracks and some like this mellow offering where he describes driving down Rodeo Dr in a drop top rocking Vlone, hopping on the PJ rocking Vlone, and also standing on the block looking for the opps (dripped in Vlone of course). Go give “Big Draco 3” a listen if you own a legal firearm and love the Lord.
88GLAM - Ziploc: Bang bang! The duo, who I first came across when they dropped “Lil Boat” a couple years ago (and who allegedly broke up for like 2 days), is back with some more heat for ya headtop. Ziploc is a bouncy track about girls, guns, Gucci, and guap (Glam boys G’d up). Catchy beat, melodic flow, it’s a whole vibe!
Mase - Oracle 2, The Liberation of Mason Betha: Ma$e had some shit to get off his chest (and he executed on this superb track). Hard beat with a nice drum loop and organ chords to sauce it up (and give it a churchy feel, apropo considering he is/was a pastor). He takes shots at a certain past friend/associate. He proclaims “We ain’t nothin nigga”. He claims that person paid the freaks but never paid the artists. He claims that person should be mentoring the next generation of execs but instead is teaching them treachery. He’s haunted, but looks at his battle to get what he feels is his as David vs Goliath. Whatever happens, I pray for peace.
ArrDee ft. Lola Young - Who Woulda Thought: Just when you dub Aitch the “Best New Young White British Rapper” here comes ArrDee to break up the Pardee. ArrDee released a new album this week called “Pier Pressure” (which features his Caucusian brethren Aitch). My favorite track is “Who Woulda Thought”. The beat has NY-UK Drill elements but the keys and the minimal drums gives it a soulful feel. Lola Young does an exquisite job with her vocals. The pair describe climbing from the gutter to find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. When you travel that long road, sometimes you look back at how far you’ve come and think, Who Woulda Thought.
BRS Kash - RBS (Rich Bish Shit): The man known for the smash hit “Throat Baby” and LVRN signee, BRS Kash, released another one for the ladies this week. Produced by the same beatsmith that made Lil Baby & 42 Dugg’s “We Paid”. It’s dedicated to those phenomenal women, who push luxury cars, draped in Manolo. The ladies who chill on boats in Miami with ballers only. Rich Bish Shit. I’m like Drake tho, I like when they used to Soda & Nuggets so I can introduce them to the good life of splitting an entree at Ruth Chris.
GRIP - Dirty Work: I forget when I first heard GRIP, but when I saw this new track I thought “I remember this guy being a beast” and my memory served me correct! On his new track, “Dirty Work”, he spits over a quirky beat (sounds like it could be in a Horror movie). He plots million dollar schemes as he collects dirty money he has to clean and gives great advice “If you gon’ hit, you gotta swing”. GRIP uses a fast flow to deliver some of the best bars of 2022. Tough Tune.
PRICE ft. Wale - PROBLEMS: Price (formerly of Audio Push) released an EP this week affectionately titled “The Price EP” (makes sense don't it!?) I love the track with Elhae (which dropped as a single a few weeks ago) and also this track with Wale. Over a snap (then boom-bap-ish) beat the guys get in their introspective bag and talk about having problems. Counting their problems, dealing with anxiety, societal ills and having to chase the cash 24/7. PRICE recommends you embrace the problems and keep your soil pure so that those seeds you plant can blossom.
Lil Durk - Computer Murderers: Durk added this track to his recently released album “7220” and it’s Durk at his most Smurkiest. Ultra Hard Beat with a nice key loop, Durk talks that talk about the opps (and the chicks who bone them), his marksmanship, and his preferences in the bedroom. He lets the opps know they can have the internet because he’s sliding in real life, headshots only.
