The Hit List Week 48: (Mar 21 - Mar 27)
Latto ft. Lil Wayne & Childish Gambino - Sunshine: Big Latto! The artist formerly known as Mulatto released her debut album this week called “777”. Lots of A1 features including 21 Savage, Kodak Black and a secret Mariah feature (cat’s already out the bag). I really loved this track with Weezy & Don. Latto shows off her versatility by singing throughout and the overall message of the song (and vibe) is positivity. Go check out “777” and may good fortune enter your life when you finish listening.
Bfb Da Packman - Can’t Blame Ye: BFBDP is one of the most entertaining artists in the game right now. His hilarious, witty bars combined with his lack of a filter and penchant for choosing beats that slap, has kept him in heavy rotation around my hood. The title refers to the Kim-Ye breakup and how Bfb empathizes with Yeezy as he’d feel the same way if his main damie broke up with him. On the song, he called an opps girl to give him fellatio and she obliged (until she puked.) He also feels like Duke Deuce when he’s super crunk up in the poom poom. He proclaims that his career is almost over so he asks Drake for a feature and welcomes his ladie’s ejaculate as he says it isn’t pee (science say otherwise but I digress).
Denzel Curry ft. 6lack, Rico Nasty, JID, Jasiah & Powers Pleasant - Ain’t No Way: Florida Superstar Denzel Curry released a new project this week called ”Melt My Eyez See Your Future”. Like his previous projects, it’s raw, and talks about real shit going on in the world. This track features the soulful vocals of 6lack, and the Rock-Rap talents Rico Nasty & Jasiah (and Powers Pleasant been in my Serrato). Rico starts the party and threatens to pull the choppa out on a ho. JID up next and uses a bunch of “sh” alliteration and big ups his homie who makes Salat and sells dope (Mashallah). Denzel hops on and delivers a nice Run The Jewels bar and compares his career arc to Hov’s (never knew Hov popped off at a later age than most artists). Tough Tune.
Sheff G - Break From It: NY’s finest back again with a beat from the squad’s personal beatsmith Great John that has this double-snap loop that was a refreshing take on a tried and true formula. This one is for the ladies. He admits that he’s in his feelings, wearing his heart on his sleeve. The rollercoaster of love got him needing a break from the fuckery. As usual, Sheff keeps it short and sweet. Free the Young King!
Buddy ft. T-Pain - Happy Hour: LA’s own Buddy released a new project this week called “Superghetto”. A standout on the project is this track with Tallahassee Pain. Downtempo, with a catchy hook “Happy Hour, Henny Sour…” Drinks + vibes as Buddy & Teddy ask shawty why she so salty. The guys are sipping drinks on Thirsty Thursday, not a care in the world, how could they be sad. For Pain Happy Hour is Nappy Hour and it’s also Mister Nasty Time and he’s licking rims (eatin ass). That’s sure to get shawty in a good mood. Go listen to “Superghetto” on DSPs everywhere.
Deante Hitchcock - Alone: ATLien (and one of the game’s most underrated) D Hitch released a loosie this week. It’s a change of pace as he displays his vocal ability, using melodies to communicate that he’s been hurt before and he feels he’s better off alone. He can do bad all by himself and he lets shawty know that if she decides they should part he’ll be straight.
Rema - Jo: African superstar Rema released “Rave & Roses” a new album full of music that’ll be played throughout the world over the next year. “Jo” is Afrobeats at it’s finest. Rema croons to his main damie Jo, perfect song to dance to, my hips be swaying uncontrollably as this track plays. He asks Jo to give him sugar as he repeats her name. He loves his African woman. Wonderful track, and dope album. Any Afrobeats fan needs to give “Rave & Roses” a listen.
Machine Gun Kelly ft. Lil Wayne - drug dealer: MGK released a new album this week called “Mainstream Sellout”. It’s basically a rock album akin to what Wayne did with “Rebirth”. Only fitting that Weezy F would be featured on multiple tracks including this one. “drug dealer” is shockingly about the ladies. For the ladies moving that work! She got blunts, percs, purple rain, booze, all the cures for mans ailments. Headaches gone, hangovers, kaput, you itch she got them scratches. Weezy gets in his rap-rock and this is a nice radio-ready ditty. Check out “Mainstream Sellout” if you ever snitched on your Uncle Reggie just so you could be released from custody and make it to the Fall Out Boy concert on time.
Tory Lanez - Taken Care: Fargo Fridays back like cooked crack. T Lanez is in his R&B bag on this one. He chides shawty for being selfish and wanting him all for herself. They argue and he offers to take her to Saks for a little retail therapy. She declines so Tory gets gone. He‘s focused on his inner self and is taking care of him right now. Maybe they can revisit later but he’s Mr. Solo Dolo for the foreseeable future (or at least for the duration of the song).
Nigo ft. Pharrell Williams & A$AP Ferg - Paper Plates: Nigo, producer, fashion mogul, and frequent Neptunes collaborator dropped an album this week called “I Know Nigo”. He recruited some industry titans. The Tyler track is tough, so is the Clipse track (I absolutely loved them both). This track with A$AP Ferg & Skateboard P kept me coming back. Trippy beat, Pharrell with the falsetto and A$AP spitting some braggadocious bars (and barking of course). Nigo’s project has the streets buzzin and is a lot of people’s favorite project of the week (including me!)
Nicki Minaj ft. Fivio Foreign - We Go Up: Nicki’s got an album coming soon. From her weekly drops to her sit down with Jump Off Joe Budden, she’s making a comeback. On this loosie, Nicki links with one of the hottest artists in the game and gets on the NY Drill wave (we saw her kill it already on Chicago Drill with G Herbo on “Chiraq”). She starts with a “traditional” NY Drill flow then gets into her Nicki flow, stretching bars for emphasis then transitions to her Barbie flow. My favorite bar is “I know these teabagging bitches is testy” Bars! The beat is custom made for Fivi, and he destroys his verse. This is a super dope track and because songs are so short now, it felt like it went on forever (but it’s only 4 minutes).
Jay Worthy, Larry June & LNDN DRGS - Hotel Bel-Air: Larry June & Jay Worthy (of LNDN DRUGS) dropped a collab album this week called “2 P’z In A Pod” I’m guessing most of the production was done by the other half of LNDN DRGS, Sean House. This standout track features symphonic production, sounds like large string instruments (cellos and stand up bass and shit) and a harp (which is technically a percussion instrument if ya dun know), gives it a cinematic feel. Starts off with words of wisdom, how, to move forward you gotta be fearless when it comes to things changing, keep your eyes on the prize, take it one step at a time, think bigger, all that good shit. When writing down your goals, be specific. Larry dreamed it then manifested now he got 7 streams of income. He did anything to make it out the Jungle (ay, ay, ay, ay, ay). Larry got one of the best ad libs, I be saying that shit throughout the day. Jay Worth bitties always be in his business and they homies be tryna smash the God. He stays 10 toes down, you know how he get down. If you like that smooth slick talk, go give “2 P’z in a Pod” a spin.
Chance The Rapper - Child of God: Chance dropped a loosie with a minimalist beat (funky though). He talks about his journey using biblical references, a bar about Van Gogh and some wordplay as he encourages us to learn lessons and do our thing. He dedicated this one to the kids who get bullied, the ones who got dealt a bad hand in life but they overcame to become pillars of the community. He motivates the ones that are going through it to “Do your thing Child”. Tough Tune.
YungManny - BSU (Shut Up): I’m a sucker for a sample and this track samples Trick Daddy & Trina’s classic track “Shut Up”. Perfect go-hard music for the gym. Bumps in the trunk and will go in the club too. If you like the original, you’ll like this re-rock.
