The Hit List Week 52: (Apr 18 - Apr 24)
Pusha T ft. Ye & Kid Cudi - Rock N Roll: It’s snowing! Legendary artist, A&R, former president of GOOD music and exposer of secret children, Pusha Terrence put out a new project this week called “It’s Almost Dry”. It’s in the AOTY conversation. Nice tight 12 tracks with production handled by Pharrell & Ye, of course this shit was gonna be fire. I’ve had Rock N Roll on repeat. Of course PT uses his Coke, Brick slanguage but the beat and Ye baring soul about his very public bad breakup (and also his faith) and Cudi making Cudi sounds (and also vowing never work with Ye again, not on the song IRL). One of my favorite tracks of the year so far, hands down. Go check “It’s Almost Dry” if you’ve ever played Madden with your Coke dealer, lost, then end up having to pay double for the 8 ball.
Redman - Jane: Obviously the stoners show out for 4/20 and Jersey’s Own Redman dropped a new song and video dedicated to the wacky tobacky. “Jane” is repeated throughout the track as Redman describes his love for trees and the many ways he ingests it. Blunts, joints, bongs, bubblers, niggas in the video smoking moon rock, hash even Shawn Kemp in the video blowing bud. Roll you up a fat one and groove to “Jane”.
Kwesi Arthur - Silver Spoon: African spitter Kweis Arthur released a new project this week called “Son of Jacob”. It was in the main carousel on the iTunes page on Thursday night so it’s up for KA. And with a project like this it’s soon to be stuck (get it? Up and it’s stuck… fuck y’all). On this track he talks about keeping a solid team around him. Shrouded with love. Even though he was raised in the hood and it’s hard to know who to trust he knows it’ll work out in the end. “Son of Jacob” is an excellent project. Check out these other highlights:
Disturb
Paper
Winning (ft. VIC MENSA)
Animal (with Dayonthetrack)
Ed Sheeran ft. Lil Baby - 2step: This is a previously released track by the British megastar that he added a Lil Baby verse to (cheat code) and re-released this week. He sings to his bae and lets her know she is the best stress reliever. He just wanna be close to her and 2step with her. He uses a speedy delivery on his verse and it gels with the beat. Lil Baby just wanna make love in the club (as long as he has his drink and his drugs). They’ll keep turning up and go all night. This track will dominate terrestrial radio for the rest of 2022 (you can bet that).
Taylor Bennett ft. Matt (of Matt & Kim) - Kick Back: The Chicago MC released a new album this week called “Coming Of Age”. Much of the album has a non-traditional hip-hop sound. I enjoyed it. My favorite track is this track featuring Matt (of Matt & Kim). It’s about puffing trees and kicking back. The beat super dope with the guitar chords and bass. TB is a chill bro. He’s down to talk about your problems while you both ash on the carpet and fly over the mountains. Check out “Coming of Age” then text your little brother and let him know you’ll still kick his ass if he crosses you.
Jay Critch - Stamped: Jay Critch back at it with a thumper for ya headtop. This track has a soul sample with the NY Drill hi-hats and some keys to give it a creamy feel. Jay Critch talks about goofy chicks, running up the money, dropping opps and going from broke to balling. He’s Stamped in the streets and he got stamps in his passport.
Tory Lanez - I Like: Despite other things going on in T Lanez life, his output of quality music has not stopped. He brought back Fargo Fridays which saw him drop a loosie every week (on Friday obvi). This one is R&B Tory (my favorite Tory). Like the last track this one has a soul sample and Tory sings about what he likes (good girls in a bad city with a big ol booty). His breath control is outstanding on the verse as he delivers quick bars to his main damie. She likes the way he puts it down.
Blxst - Still Omw: Cali crooner Blxst released a new LP this week called “Before You Go”. It features his signature sound, love ballads over new wave Cali vibe beats. I really loved this track. “Still Omw” is about the grind. Even though he’s made it to the stratosphere of music he’s still a man on a mission. He’s still grinding even though the tippy top doesn’t seem too far away. Go check “Before You Go” If you ever had doggystyle sex with a condom on and you love the Lord.
Ab-Soul - Hollandaise: Solo made his triumphant return this week. Along with Kendrick’s new project and Schoolboy’s recent project TDE havin a renaissance in 2022. “Get up off my dick, let me talk my shit, let me show em how I feel for real” Ab Soul talks about his come up. Beat got a nice bounce to it. He ain't need a AP to put his city on the M-A-P. Track has some screwed vocals that gives it a Texas feel. Solo’s going hard in the paint. All work no play. Same song new dance.
Logic - Decades: “I just wanna thank God for the life that I got, I seen alotta pain”. Logic making a comeback out of retirement. He’s been busy being a dad but he’s got the music itch. He warned his label not to play games with him then dropped this track. Money’s not everything to him and he wants that to be known. The beat starts downtempo as Logic harmonizes then the beat speeds up and Logic goes on a lyrical onslaught about having faith in his dreams and working hard everyday to make it happen. Some days he went without food but it paid off because now he has a lot of dough and a lot of carats.
D Smoke ft. Andre Harris - Glide: The Grammy nominated Cali artist is back at it with a loosie for the people. He’s very confident about his looks and asks us to look within and discover who we really are. Absent the money and material things, who are you. The beat is boom-bappy with a wavy loop. Positive affirmations and encouragement from Mr. Smoke (and also a seasoned plate of soul food).
AB ft. Fivio Foreign - Champions: Superbowl champion Antonio Brown has been dropping tracks and they’ve actually been dope. This culminated with an album drop this week. The album, called “Paradigm” features a bunch of A1 features including this track with Fivi. It’s NY Drill and Fivio does what we’ve seen him do since he’s blown up, destroy a Drill loop. What AB does is equally impressive as this is his first Drill song and it takes a certain flow to make it saucy and he did the damn thang. Go check out “Paradigm” if you have at least 3 career tackles on the JV football team.
