The Hit List Week 53: (Apr 25 - May 1)
PJ Morton & JoJo ft. Mr. Talkbox - My Peace: New Orleans native, Grammy-winning artist and church kid, PJ Morton released a new album this week called “Watch the Sun”. It’s my favorite drop of the week (and the only one I purchased, cash money) and it’s an AOTY candidate (this album will be nominated for multiple Grammys, book it). It was hard to pick one standout but the track that samples “Spottieottiedopaliscious” was an easy choice. Add in the live drums and the Roger Troutman talkbox and we got ourselves a certified hit. PJ is getting rid of anything that’s disturbing his peace, he’s done. If you got bad energy, he’s done. Whole album is fantastic and the last track “Better Benediction” hits extra hard for us fellow church kids. Check out the other highlights from “Watch the Sun”:
Biggest Mistake
Be Like Water (ft. Nas & Stevie Wonder)
So Lonely (ft. Wale)
Lil’ Too Heavy
Better Benediction (ft. Zacardi Cortez, Gene Moore, Samoht, Tim Rogers & Darrell “MusiqCity” Walls)
Action Bronson ft. Hologram - Estaciones: Action Bronson released a new project this week called “Cocodrillo Turbo”. It’s already been praised by Questlove as AB’s best work. I love the project and my favorite is this downtempo track. The beat is carried by keys and Hologram delivers one of the best verses of the year. He says he wouldn’t mess with ya bish cause she smell like wickedness. He’s the weed plug to the chick you got a crush on, and he’ll giver a discount just to get his fuck on (mind blown emoji). And my favorite bars “Every bitch pussy to me, is only one size, and she my lil fuck thang, I eat the pussy like a mukbang, let my nuts hang”. I disagree about the size part ‘cause I’ve slid my hot dog down some hallways if you know what I’m saying but maybe he working with something different (pause) Check out “Cocodrillo Turbo” if you like boom-bap, real Hip-Hop or if you ever been fucking and the condom broke.
Flee Lord & Mephux ft. Roc Marciano, Conway The Machine & Trae The Truth - Final Four: Some more boom-bap for your headtop. Flee Lord & Roc Marciano dropped this track with their new wave boom-bap brethren Roc Marc & Conway and also H-Town Heavyweight, Trae The Truth (say what?). It has a funky backpacker bassline and a loop that makes it sound like a horror movie soundtrack. They talk about the snow, the whistles (and blowin em, superpause) and balling out on the naysayers. Perfect track to bump in your Civic with the sunroof half-cracked.
Future - BACK TO THE BASICS: “I Never Liked You”: Ahhh yes, our Toxic King has returned with a new album called “I Never Liked You”. I’m sure the title is directed at someone (or ones) in particular but we don’t know who. He got a Ye feature, 2 Drake features, Kodak, Tems, Thugger, Gunna and more. I love all versions of Future but I really loved the melodic tracks on this project. “BACK TO THE BASICS” finds Fyutch asking for shorty’s heart (if it’s real and it’s rare). If they link he’d like to hit it while listening to Go-Go (shoutout DC). After he smashes he asks if he could cry on her shoulder. She’s the one and after he nuts, he’s overwhelmed with emotion. If you’re reading this, you definitely heard this album already. Go give it another spin, it gets better with successive listens. (And also they added 6 more tracks…)
Aitch ft. Giggs - Just Coz: Britains finest! Aitch seeing that stock go up. He got British Royalty, Giggs on a track which finds them both spitting bar after bar about money, punani & jewelry Just Coz. It’s a delightful change of pace as they rap over a flip of a Detroit-type beat.
Casey Veggies ft. Kalan.FrFr - Good Dope: Cali spitter Casey Veggies released an EP this week called “Since Y’all Forgot” (cuz some of y’all forgot). I loved the whole EP, especially this track and “Royalty” with Dom Kennedy. “Good Dope” has that new age Cali sound (think Mustard). Kalan Fr.Fr kicks it off singing the hook. He loves hood hoes, white bitties who hit licks and do coke and also redbones with wet punani and good throat. CV likes the cowgirl position while having sexual relations. Now that he’s getting money, he don’t know who to trust. Those who stay down will receive some money from Casey via Jpay (iykyk). Go check out “Since Y’all Forgot” if you ever got up to go to the kitchen then completely forgot what you went to get.
Lil Baby - Frozen: LB gearing up for an album release. With the Nicki features and the two pack a couple weeks ago, I smell a return to prominence. Frozen has a A1 beat, hi hat loop, bass and keys. He talks about his lavish life and also the trappings of fame. He’s looking for a shorty to melt his heart because this cold world has made it Frozen.
Tanna Leone - Fatal Attraction: pgLang (Kendrick’s label) signee Tanna Leone released his debut album this week, “Sleepy Soldier”. It has an emo-hip hop vibe but also traditional hip-hop elements. “Fatal Attraction” is an uptempo bop which has TL chanting “and we rolling now, cuz it’s going down, like you chosen now” on the hook. He knows he’s one of them ones and he’s enjoying the life. Smashing bitties in penthouse suites and all that. Check out “Sleepy Soldier” and make sure you listen to “Death n Taxes”.
IDK & Denzel Curry - Dog Food: Word on the street is that IDK & Denzel Curry are dropping a collab album with Katranada producing (mind blown emoji x 10)... And the streets are here for that! The title of this track refers to a slang term for drugs and DC & IDK let us know that the Block is Hot. Cold in the winter time, cold in the summer. The beat is stupid wild. Denzel tailors his flow to the beat and spits that real shit about opps, homies getting popped, dodgin the pen, and taking what you can get. He encourages us to free the proverbial titty. Outside of K Dot this will be the most anticipated upcoming drop if the rumors are true.
Kehlani ft. Blxst - Any Given Sunday: Kehlani released a new album this week called “blue water road”. Super soulful rhythm & blues throughout. My favorite track is “Any Given Sunday” featuring Blxst. Lani touches down in Miami and makes it rain on her shawty’s stage. Splurging, spoiling her, throwing a “paper tantrum” (bars) at the club. Then she starts rapping over the luscious snap beat. Man listen (no really go listen). Blxst joins the party and sings about making his 4th trip to the jiggle joint this week. He’s motivated by the T-Pain hit “In Love With a Stripper”. B & K ask shawty if she working tonight because they ready to blow a bag. Go give “blue water road” a listen if you’ve ever been in love and you like sipping green tea while smoking fat blunts.
T-Pain - That’s Just Tips: Speaking of Teddy Pain, he dropped a loosie this week dedicated to Tips (the money kind… get your head out the gutter mate). Dedicated to all those who work for tips (including but not limited to: waitstaff, bartenders, valets, delivery drivers and of course them dancers.) Pain coming through with a fat wad, and that’s just Tips.
NoCap - Go-Realer: Alabama rapper NoCap released a new project this week called “Mr. Crawford” (and starts the album with dope a Mr. Carter flip). I loved the project, street shit, young nigga shit that’s introspective and full of dope beats. I really love “Go-Realer” (a word play of Gorilla). The beat is a vibe, highlighted by strings. NC pushes Bentleys, spins on the opps but also hates that the opps died because he wanted them to see him ballin. He also received fellatio then drops the young lady off to her man. He goes Go-realer and has banana clips (see what he did there). Go check out “Mr. Crawford”. Some people have it pegged as the best drop of the week and make sure you listen to “Comfortable Numb”.
Lil Poppa - Lil Moe: Under Investigation 3: Florida Man Lil Poppa released a new project this week called “Under Investigation 3”. Excellent offering, LP talks about a lotta real shit (I stay bumping his track “God’s Hand”). “Lil Moe” is my favorite. Of course the beat is fire (I have a type don’t I?) Poppa keeps a glizzy but knows with great power comes great responsibility. He been sipping Wock a Lil Moe, spinning the block a Lil Moe and gripping his Glock a Lil Moe. He says the old niggas in his hood is washed (oohhh). All his niggas never cooperate with authorities and he ain’t glorifiying the life but he’s proud of the guys for staying solid. Go check out “Under Investigation 3” If you ever was out in the streets sinning but then you got your life right with The Lord and now you winning.
Pooh Sheisty & Moneybagg Yo ft. Lil Durk & EST GEE - Switches & Dracs: Pooh Sheisty got a 5 year sentence for ACCIDENTALLY shooting someone in the club when he dropped his money (cold world). Since he’s gone for awhile his team dropped some new music to hold us over. “Sheisty Season: Certified” is the second Deluxe of his debut album/mixtape Sheisty Season. I accidentally pressed play on this track when seeing what music dropped and this shit was too hard (pause, unpause). Durk & EST Gee kill it (figuratively of course). You just gotta listen. Listen to all of “Sheisty Season: Certified”, it’s got A1 features from Kodak to Jack Harlow and everything in between (not everything but you catch my drift.)
Money Man - Misbehave: Money Man released a 10 track EP this week called “Whale Games”. The standout for me was Misbehave. It has a New Orleans-esque Bounce beat. MM smokes that Za because his nerves are bad and he adapts to any environment because he learns fast. He’s come too far to go back. He’s solo, he’s on his own, so he’s like fuck people. GO check out “Whale Games” if you like Auntie Anne’s pretzels and straight shots of Casamigos.
