The Hit List Week 58: (May 30 - June 5)
KayCyy, Annahstasia & Steven Bamidele - Hold You Up: KayCyy released a new project this week called “Get Used To It”. The whole project is soulful, three-dimensional, and I loved the whole thing. My favorite track is “Hold You Down”. He sings to his main bae over a jazzy neo-soul beat. He promises to never hold her down (because he’s holding her up). He knows life is short so he doesn’t take their bond for granted. He’s willing to carry the load for the team. Go listen to “Get Used To It” expeditiously and be sure to check out these highlights:
New Rules
Needed For Something
Lil Loaded - Cell Tales: The late rapper's estate released this new track a year after his untimely death. The beat is similar to one Shy Glizzy used on his last project with The Glizzy Gang (on a track called “Ay Ay Ay”) so I was already fuckin wit it. Lil Loaded talks about time he spent in a cell. He had million dollar skeet, so when he got out the bing he wasn’t passing it around to just any young lady (he was a believer of condoms). When he got home he had to get that jail smell off him. His brother's spirit was in him and he knows he walked with him. RIP Loaded.
070 Shake - Cocoon: Jersey artist and GOOD Music signee 070 Shake released a new album this week called “You Can’t Kill Me”. Dope project with an eclectic mix of sounds. Lots of love ballads to Shake’s shawty. This one is a change of pace. It has a Jersey Club bounce to it (makes sense). She been taking pain killers and might have gotten a taste for them and laments at the fucked up system (as her doctor prescribed them). Shake says she should’ve known. Flowers are in fact gonna bloom. Smoke is gonna rise. She’s getting emotional. Shawty’s giving her mixed signals but she’s gonna go with the flow for now. Check out this track and these other highlights from “You Can’t Kill Me”.

Gucci Mane - Mrs. Davis: The Gucci Mane rebrand has been one of the most successful I’ve ever seen. To leave prison and get in the best shape of your life, get married, have a child from that beautiful union and become one of the most successful talent evaluators (Free Sheisty) in the new era of Hip-Hop, is nothing short of a miracle. When it’s all said and done Gucci’s movie is gonna be a must see. He dropped a new track this week with an accompanying video, dedicated to his rock, his better half, Keyshia Ka'oir (aka Mrs. Davis). Before pressing play I thought there was gonna be some super simping going on but on top of being a great song, it’s heartfelt and it’s honest. Over a trap beat that’s epic, sounds like something you’d hear in a movie like Gladiator or 300. Gucci reminisces about how he almost got life in prison and while he was locked down he would have wet dreams about her. She held it down, even when he told her he had to do a 20 year bid. She was there at his lowest and he’s gonna make sure she experiences the highest highs (including private jets). They got married twice so he got her 2 rings. A Lot of us know Gucci but she knows Radric. Tough Tune.
Post Malone ft. Fleet Foxes - Love/Hate Letter To Alcohol: Posty dropped a new album this week called “Twelve Carat Toothache”. Solid effort filled with Posty’s signature sound. Melodies, nice mix of beats, and Post bearing his soul. This track captures that feeling. It is like the title says A love/hate letter to alcohol. He blames the booze for getting his ass kicked and he prolly says the same thing we all do after a night of going too hard. “Lord, I ain't never drinking again…” But we do because we Love some of the memories we make when inebriated. Rinse & Repeat. Other highlights from “Twelve Carat Toothache”:
Cooped Up (ft. Roddy Rich)
I Like You (A Happier Song) [ft. Doja Cat]
Insane
Vory - I.J.S.: Houston-born artist Vory has been bubbling for a minute. He used to be King Vory and I have quite a few of his tracks in the Serrato (including the hit “Stay”). He’s seen his profile raise significantly since his standout appearances on Ye’s “Donda”. He released a new album this week called “Lost Souls”. I really like “I.J.S”. I’m a sucker for a soul sample loop in the background. Vory sings about being at peace if shawty not rocking with him. He Just Saying, here they go again. She be letting outside voices affect their bond, now he’s moving on (with her friend, sheesh!) He told her not to call him a friend or twin. Let him be. But her cute face and slim waist gets him every time. By the end of the song he says maybe he should give it time (Rollercoaster of Love). Listen to “Lost Souls” front to back and make sure you have these tracks all the way turnt up:
Do Not Disturb (ft. NAV & BLEU)
Happy Birthday 2U
Eli Fross ft. Fredo Bang - Menace: South & North link on this one. NY Drill Rapper Eli Fross and Louisiana’s own Fredo Bang hop on a Great John beat laced with keys and a muted hi-hat loop and deliver the goods. Fross warns the opps to watch their mouths as his 40 does not jam and as a back up he’ll resort to a fist to the face. He’s also known to make his own red bottoms by stomping out marks-ass tricks and trick-ass marks. He whispers the bridge (dope) and raps that even John Cena can’t see him. Fredo is so bloodthirsty you’d think he’s a vampire. He’s a big stepper who’s really about business. He keeps a weapon on his hip at all times so his opps should tread lightly.
Arin Ray - Lovely: Former X-Factor contestant Arin Ray released a new album this week called “Hello Poison”. It’s full of top-tier R&B, love songs, falling outta love songs and some A1 features including Ty Dolla, Ari Lennox, Blxst & D Smoke. My favorite track is “Lovely”. It has a funky, bass guitar riff and Arin sings about his main damie. She gets him charged up. Even though she ain’t famous, when he sees her he’s starstruck. She made him boss up. She’s the one for him. Give “Hello Poison” a listen and check out these other highlights from the project:
This Is Nice
Ms. Frustration (ft. VanJess)
What It is (ft. Ari Lennox)
Polo G - Distraction: Polo G dropped a loosie for the people this week. On the 808 Mafia beat he talks about people discrediting his talent even though he’s been going harder than hard (pause, unpause). He calls out some people who claim they’re locked in but what if he wasn’t rapping? Would they still hold it down. Sometimes he feels he’s gonna relapse on the Ecstasy pills but it’d be a Distraction. If he calls his stepper to step out he’ll come running and gunning. He’s living the savage life and it’s hard for his mama to accept, but he’s gotta survive and thrive the only way he knows how.
Big Moochie Grape ft. Young Dolph - Fun: Paper Route Empire artist Big Moochie Grape released a new project this week called “East Haiti Baby” full of certified Down South trapper slappers. On this one he has the late great OG Young Dolph handle the hook and last verse. The beat sounds like it interpolates “Sippin On Some Sizzurp” (a Memphis classic, so it makes sense). Dolph doesn’t care how it gets done as long as it gets done. He purchased crystal clear diamonds with dirty money just for Fun. He told the plug one more run and then he’s done. Big Moochie is a Section 8 baby who came from the slums. He never had money, now his bread is real long. Dolph raps that his heart is numb and he dumped his old girl for no reason then he got with her friend. He pushed a different foreign everyday through the slums. Everyday he woke up and had to decide how many chains he would wear that day (and also which strap to bring with him). Give “East Haiti Baby” a spin and don’t miss this track and other standouts:
East Haiti Baby
Money Money Money
Acting Up
Sada Baby & Snoop Dogg - 2 Freaks: The Mitten and Long Beach linked on this one. It has an old school Cali feel. It’s a few freaks in the party and the vibe is all love (they ain’t tryna hurt nobody). Sada’s sippin and smokin and checking out the thickys, picking which one he trying to slide with. Snoop linked with a chick but didn’t know she had a man. But he picked up the fumble and gets to stumbling and rumbling (he prolly means doggystyle intercourse).
Yungeen Ace - Where They At: I’m a sucker for a sample and Florida rapper Yungeen Ace dropped a new track that samples “Shake That Monkey” with its piano loop. He’s known for the Opp anthem “Who I Smoke” and “Where They At” is exactly what you guessed. If you wanna know where the killers at, Ace is Where They At. And when it comes to the opps, he’s wondering Where They At. He’s been hustling since a youngin. He knows a lot of the rappers be snitching and some of the women be setting dudes up, so he moves cautiously.
