The Hit List week 65: (July 18 - July 24)
Joey Bada$$ ft. Larry June - One of Us: After a couple delays, and a bunch of single releases, Badmon finally dropped his new album “2000”. He knocked it out the park with this one. It’s one of my favorite projects this year, it’s sure to be in the AOTY conversation and you can pencil it in for a Best Rap Album Grammy nom. One of the standouts tracks is this Larry June collab over a Statik Selektah beat. It has a 90’s feel with the boom-bap and the vocal sample in the background. The guys talk a lot of shit because they can back it up. They living in the lap of luxury and that’s why everybody wanna be down. Go check out “2000” (it has no skips) and be sure to check out these highlights:
The Baddest (ft. Diddy)
Make Me Feel (ft. Westside Gunn)
Cruise Control
Head High
Survivor’s Guilt
Lil Uzi Vert - I KNOW: LUV dropped an EP called “Red + White” as a prelude to their upcoming “The Pink Tape” project. 4 tracks, Uzi goes full Uzi on each, experimenting with sound and stretching norms but all in all being true to self. My 2 favorite tracks are “I KNOW” and “FINAL FANTASY”. On “I KNOW” Uzi knows what shorty wants. Aint shit change, money ain’t a thang, they walk straight to the cake. Uzi was nothing but turned into something and now all the bitties wanna eat Uzi’s tadpoles. Check out “Red + White” and try to make peace with your pops before he passes away.
Russ ft. Ed Sheeran - Are You Entertained: Big shit poppin! Indie titan Russ linked with the British megastar Ed Sheeran for a new track and video. The title is a flip of the classic line from the movie “Gladiator” and the song is just as epic. The guys been winning, flying private, cruising in drop top Rarri’s and putting the crew on. They’ve reached the summit of the mountain but they’re still climbing. They take all the setbacks and transmute them into the music. They shining and moving up. They’re still in their winning phase. Tough Tune.
Casey Veggies ft. Yun-A & nNo - No Debate: Casey Veggies dropped his 2nd project of 2022 this week with “Crypto Veggies”. I love “No Debate” featuring Yun-A & nNo. Beat wavy, the guys need they money right now. They look down on captain save-em ass niggas. They don’t chase the booty but do chase the bag. Go check out “Crypto Veggies” and these other standouts:
Kriss Cross
I Shoulda Known
NBA Youngboy - I Don’t Talk: Youngboy’s had a hell of year. From being locked up for a Federal gun charge to being released on house arrest at one of his spots in Utah of all places. To prepping an album rollout to being acquitted of a Federal gun charge to making peace with his child’s grandfather (and one of the greatest athletes ever Floyd Mayweather Jr.) 2021-2022 has been a doozy for Kentrell. He’s set to drop his new album “The Last Slimeto” on August 5th. He already gave us a whole pre-project and now he’s dropping some loosies for the lead up. YB doesn’t talk to his girlfriends and they don’t talk to him. The industry blackballed him but he bounced back. He ain’t have no options growing up but now he trying to make it the legal way. He warns the opps not to get too close. He’s seen a lot of loss but he’s trying to persevere. His storytelling on this one is A1.
Shordie Shordie - Ms. Shirley’s: DMV artist Shordie Shordie dropped a new project this week called “More Than Music, Pt. 2.” My favorite track is the opening track “Ms. Shirley’s” that has a dope acoustic guitar loop. SS is around the corner with Ms Shirley. He wanted to walk away from her but she owed him some guap. He never got to it because she OD’d (damn). Go give “More Than Music, Pt. 2.” a spin and be sure to check out these standouts:
Can’t Party Here No More
Counter
Is It True?
Us 2
King Combs ft. Kodak Black - Can’t Stop Wont Stop: As you may or may not know, I’m a sucker for a sample. And King Combs and Kodak sampling “Crush On You”? Yes, please! Kodak was locked up but now he balling like Jordan. He’s too rich to drive Range Rovers and his side chick puts it down better than his main thang. King Combs can’t fall in love because the money is his bottom bitch. He rocks throwbacks, guzzle’s DeLeon and smokes hella blunts. He never hates as he’s living comfortably so there’s no need.
Rico Nasty ft. Teezo Touchdown & Bktherula - Messy: Rico Nasty dropped a new album this week called ”Las Ruinas”. Lots of dope tracks on the project. My favorite features fellow Alt-rapper Teezo Touchdown and Bktherula, “Messy”. Teezo asks how could someone so pretty be so petty? How can someone be so organized yet so messy? So gentle yet so deadly? The beat kicks into overdrive and Rico hopes that you get to know the real her but she’s also super picky so you probably won’t. She knows she should end her current situation but she’s too invested. Other highlights from “Las Ruinas”:
Phuckin Lady
One On 5
Blow Me
Focus On Me
Chicken Nugget
Kodak Black - Haitian Scarface: Yak back with another one! Bill went viral this week for his interaction with Brittany Renner at Rolling Loud but also dropped this A1 loosie after being arrested a week ago for some pills that he’s allegedly prescribed (he addresses that on this song). He’s embracing being the bad guy though. He never had a dad but his lawyer is like a father figure to him (he’s there everytime Kodak calls). All the shit he put up with only made him tougher. He got shot not too long ago and that’s what the pills he got caught with were prescribed for. He feels 12 coulda let him go (especially with all the charity work he does in his hometown including giving away backpacks full of school supplies during back-to-school and turkeys on Thanksgiving).
Eli Fross - Fake Shit: NY Driller Eli Fross dropped a new project this week called “The Golden Child” and it’s one of my favorite projects of the year so far (and it helps when you have Great John on the beats). Eli displays his range throughout the project, easily transitioning from a more melodic flow to the hard in-ya-face delivery he’s known for. “Fake Shit” is one of my favorite tracks and it samples Usher’s “U Make Me Wanna”. EF pops the percs to get in his zone. He comes from the cold streets and went through a lot of pain. If he call you his brother he expects honesty and loyalty, ain’t no switching up and no Fake Shit. Some niggas do switch on the bro code and that’s when Eli has to roll solo. It’s hard for him to love, he just tryna beat cheeks and bounce. He don’t wanna set himself up for heartbreak. Go give “Golden Child” a listen. More highlights:
Bad Days (ft. Sleepy Hallow)
Demons Controlling Me
No Help
Menace (ft. Fredo Bang)
War (ft. Leaf Lzz)
Growing Up Gangsta
Wiz Khalifa - Memory Lane: Wiz is gearing up to release “Multiverse”, a new album, on 7-29. He blessed the streets with this loosie. Melodic Wiz on the hook and a wavy boom bap-ish beat by Hitmaka. Wiz raps about a shorty who left him a few years ago and he reminisces about her. He thinks about her from time to time and believes she thinks of him as well. He also ponders where they went wrong. He takes a trip down Memory Lane.
Jack White - I’ve Got You Surrounded (With My Love): Rockstar and one half of the White Stripes, Jack White, dropped a new album this week called “Entering Heaven Alive”. Lots of tunes for acoustic guitar fans. Mellow vibes throughout. My favorite track from the project is “I’ve Got You Surrounded (With My Love)”. He sings to his main damie while an electric guitar and piano keys set the mood off right. He wants to find a place that’s neutral and find out if the feelings are mutual, somewhere like a Starbucks or Central Park. He wants to fall down with her, trip and fall together. As long as he’s around, she’ll have a love shield to protect her (because he’s got her surrounded. In a loving way, not a creepy way). Go give “Entering Heaven Alive” a listen and be sure to check out these other highlights:
A Tip From You to Me
A Madman From Manhattan
DaniLeigh - 4 Velour: Dani Leigh dropped a new project called “My Side” and if you listen to it you know who it’s directed toward. She shares her side, her pain, her ups and downs and how she’s had to pick up the pieces after exiting her last relationship with a broken heart and a kid (who she adores). My favorite track is 4 Velour which is dedicated to her daughter, her only child. Her daughter is everything she wanted that she didn’t know she needed. She’s her favorite person, she’s a miracle. She assures her that she ain’t gotta be scared, momma will be there and everything will be alright no matter what else is going on.
Nardo Wick - Dah Dah DahDah: Nardo Wick released the deluxe to his debut album “Who Is Nardo Wick?”. He added twelve new tracks to the front of the original. I love “Dah Dah DahDah”. I’m a sucker for a sample (I say this every week) and Nardo went completely out of the realm of Hip-Hop and sampled the classic tune “Tom’s Diner”. Nardo flips it and talks about being the one all the hoes desire, having hella weapons, and rocking out with his Glock out when the opps out.
Central Cee - Doja: UK spitter Central Cee dropped this new track dedicated to Doja Cat that samples the Eve & Gwen Stefani hit “Let Me Blow Ya Mind” and he got a huge look with a Cole Bennett/Lyrical Lemonade produced music video. CC asks how he can be homophobic since his bae is gay. Somehow his gun is also gay. **Jordan shrug**. He asks that someone let Doja Cat know that he’s trying to indulge in that (I’m sure she’ll get the message). He knows some of the tings is after his seed so he always wears a raincoat. He values his life and can’t imagine dying before he makes 100 million and has intercourse with a flight attendant. He loves his bruvs and the trap never stops, not even on Christmas Day.
Jackboy - Let Me Be Great: Florida rapper Jackboy dropped a new album this week called “Majorly Independent” which I believe is a nod to his status as an independent artist who is still a force to reckon with in the Rap game. A lot of motivational, inspirational music on the album. My favorite track is in that vein, “Let Me Be Great”. Jack has money but he’s not always straight. He knows the hate’s real and the love fake and doesn’t know how much he can take. At any moment he could break but he’s hoping that people just give him space and let him be great. Check out “Majorly Independent” and don’t miss these standouts:
Baptize In Blood
Voices
Pursue My Dreams
Show No Love (ft. Mozzy)
Mozzy - Murder On My Mind: CMG signee Mozzy dropped a new project this week called “Survivor’s Guilt”. It has the street pain music Mozzarella is known for. My favorite track is Murder On My Mind. Mozzy congratulates his mom for her years long sobriety and calls out an estranged uncle for hitting him up for some chicken (money). He can’t live in fear and he don’t want your love if it’s tainted. He prays for forgiveness for all his street missions and questions if the Lord holds him responsible if he greenlights the hittas. He finds it hard to sleep because he has murder on his mind and it be fucking up his high. He wants to cry sometimes but his pride won’t let him. Other highlights from “Survivor's Guilt”:
If You Love Me
Tell The Truth (with Shordie Shordie)
Wouldn’t Be Us (with YG & Blxst)
4Life
Open Arms
In My Face (with 2 Chainz & Saweetie ft. YG)
Jay Worthy & Harry Fraud ft. Conway & Big Body Bes - Helicopter Homicide: Jay Worthy & Harry Fraud dropped a new track and got a Conway verse and Big Body Bes to talk that shit on the outro. Signature Fraud beat, groovy with a muted boom-bap loop. Jay Worthy confesses that his first hoe is now someone's wife (one man’s trash). He did his thing in the streets and now kicks back with a tall glass of lean. Conway been stacking M’s and knows his rap colleagues haven’t even seen paper. He dubs himself “The Beat Cremater” (Bars!) He has a Glock with a switch and a green laser and knows how to use it. He kicks back with a tall glass of Casamigos with a splash of pineapple juice. Bes volunteers to be the scapegoat. Says you can book him for ya crime scene, ya booking, ya shooting. Mr. 325 still rocking Akademiks jeans, he’ll hop out the whip double glocked up, spin the block over and over. They call it a Helicopter Homicide. Tough Tune.
Icewear Vezzo ft. E-40 - Had To: Detroit's Icewear Vezzo dropped the sequel to last year's project ROP2 with “Rich Off Pints 3”. Dope project full of Detroit-type beats. I really like the E-40 collab “Had To”. IV had to cut some bitches out of his life because they were leeches. He left them in his past, they were worthless. He had to cop some Dior kicks and had to leave the 42 alone because he prefers Patron. He always tests his drugs too because he knows nowadays cats will try to slip fentanyl in everything. 40 Water had to step his game up. He was broke and he had to blossom. He had to make the haters understand that he wasn’t playing. He had to grind dolo because he didn’t have a helping hand. He had to make his own wine so he could ease his mind (Shoutout Earl’s Stevens Mango Moscato!) He had to climb the fence to make it out. He never took the front street, he took the scenic route. Check out “Rich Off Pints 3” and these standouts:
On My Own
Know the Difference (ft. Lil Baby)
Times Like This
You Ever (ft. Baby Money)
Kay Flock ft. Dougie B & B Lovee - Brotherly Love Pt. 2: The Young Kings of NY Drill dropped a collab track this week. Kay Flock calls the opps goofy and vows to get the choppa kickin like Bruce Lee when they come around. B-Lovee was stuck in the streets, it was starting to get lonely. Him and his homies never work day shifts and he screams Free Kay Flockk. He can’t wait for that day to hit (when Flock is free). Dougie B puts all his pride aside and he’s ready to slide or die for his crew. He vows that when he’s gone the street will remember him and he also calls for Kay Flock’s freedom.
Flo Milli ft. Babyface Ray - Hottie: Flo Milli Shit! Flo Milli dropped a new project this week called “You Still Here, Ho?” My favorite track is “Hottie” with Babyface Ray. It has a 90’s Booty Bass beat. The liquor got Flo feeling naughty even though she don’t text back if she cranky. Flo’s a Hottie, everything she does the bitches try to copy. She be shittin on hoes, it’s a hobby. Babyface Ray had chicks curving him but now they feeling him. He on a vibe and he’s living the dream. He’s the life of the party, and when he dips he’s leaving with a Hottie in his Rari. Other highlights from “You Still Here, Ho?”:
Bed Time
Pretty Girls
No Face
Pay Day (ft. Rico Nasty)
