The Hit List Week 68: (August 8 - August 14)
The Game ft. Lil Wayne & G Herbo - Chrome Slugs & Harmony: Jayceon released his long awaited album “DRILLMATIC Heart vs. Mind” and it's better than advertised. Packed full of features and samples it’s a guilty pleasure with an Eminem Diss placed in the middle, just because. I love the whole project, Bone Thugs is my favorite group and “Chrome Slugs & Harmony” samples their hit “Thuggish Ruggish Bone” and with verses from Weezy & Herb, it’s bound to be a fan fave: Check out “DRILLMATIC Heart vs. Mind” and make sure to listen for these highlights:
One Time (ft. Ice-T)
Eazy (with Kanye West)
Burnin’ Checks (ft. Fivio Foreign)
Home Invasion
How Far I Came (ft. Roddy Ricch)
Start From Scratch II
Fortunate (ft. Kanye West, Dreezy & CHILLER)
Money Cash Clothes (ft. A$AP Rocky)
Talk To Me Nice (ft. Meek Mill, Moneybagg Yo & Blxst)
Save The Best For Last (ft. Rick Ross)
Universal Love (ft. Chris Brown, Chlöe & Cassie)
JID - Dance Now: Dreamville’s JID dropped a loosie this week with. Upbeat, Jiddy spits speedy bars describing what the word on road is about him. His people hope he doesn't sell his soul and believe that he’s straight like that because he’s signed to Cole. He’s been all around the world but his fam in ATL. He warns that if you dance with the Devil you’ll never Dance again.
Rod Wave ft. Jack Harlow - Yungen: After quite a few delays, Rod Wave finally dropped his new project “Beautiful Mind”. Rod Wave fans will dig it as it’s mostly that laid back Rod Wave, melodic, country rap music. Yungen fits that description. Rod describes his childhood going from a Yungen living at his mama’s house to an international superstar. Jack talks about standardized tests and performing at SXSW. He’s not a follower and only follows his gut. He’s a fan of OPP and realizes he’s a trendsetter. Other standouts from “Beautiful Mind”:
Stone Rolling
Forever
Quiet Storm (ft. December Joy)
Keep Going
Mafia
Pieces
Everything
By Your Side
Armani White - DIAMOND DALLAS: Def Jam signee Armani White dropped a bop this week and the title pays homage to the Hall of Fame wrestler. He made it out the hood and now he’s just visiting his mama. He plans to make a couple million then buy his mama a crib in the Bahamas. Video is dope too as he has his Mom featured and shows a candid moment as he hands her a bucket of cash. Tough Tune.
Peezy - Shopping Spree: Detroit’s Peezy dropped a project this week called “ONLY BUILT 4 DIAMOND LINKS”. It’s got that New Detroit sound (beats & flow). My favorite track is “Shopping Spree” which is a flip of Twista’s “Wetter”. Peezy picks bitties up and knocks bitties down. He flies bitties in and flies bitties out. After he stretches it out, he takes shawty on Shopping Spree. Other highlights from “OB4DL”:
Intro
Sleep When I Die
Ratchet (ft. Tay B)
Can’t Explain (ft. Mozzy)
2 Million Up
ShooterGang Kony - Bounce Out: One of my favorites, SGK, is loading up the clip for an album drop soon “Playing With Fire”. This track is a vibe. Kony lets the opps know his crew don’t shoot the fair one, they jump niggas. He’s been around the world and he’s got mucho dinero. He’s got plenty of guns and encourages the opps to slide if they wanna. He only fears God and is loyal to the bros. Can’t wait for this album.
Danger Mouse & Black Thought ft. Joey Bada$$, Russ & Dylan Cartlidge - Because: After a couple of lead-up singles, Danger Mouse & The Roots’ Black Thought dropped “Cheat Codes” their collab album. Whole project is Top Tier Hip-Hop. My favorite track is “Because”. It has a 70’s soul sample beat (guessing Bobby Womack based on one of Tarik’s bars). BT spits about the happenings in his hood. Cats making Salaat, kids eating ice pops, him stealing from the deli. He talks about America candidly as he’s seen everything under the sun. Dylan Cartlidge holds down the hook. Joey Bada$$ is cruising in his whip rocking a snapback. He used to sneak and smoke in the stairwell and now he blowing big blunts in Costa Rica. His parents gave him great advice that helped him beat the streets. Russ got great advice from his shawty. He’s working on having more balance in his life. He made it through his parents' toxic marriage and he’s about to become a firearm owner. He can’t run from what he’s become. Go check out “Cheat Codes” and these standouts:
Sometimes
The Darkest Part (ft. Raekwon & Kid Sister)
Aquamarine (ft. Michael Kiwanuka)
Strangers (ft. A$AP Rocky & Run The Jewels)
Saltwater (ft. Conway the Machine)
Nicki Minaj - Super Freaky Girl: The Queen is back again! This one of them ones, in the vein of “Freaks” with French Montana and “Anaconda” it samples a hit song (this time Rick James’ greatest hit “Superfreak”), radio ready, club ready, strip club ready, this song will be ev-er-y-where. It broke Spotify’s record for most streams for a solo track by a Female Rap Artist in a 24 hour span.
Yung Nudy - Impala: ATL’s Yung Nudy dropped a new project called “EA Monster” and he made the genius move of dropping on a Monday when nothing else dropped. My favorite track is “Impala”. Trippy beat, Nudy confesses to not giving a fuck about nothing. He encourages us all to get money but not be pussy niggas (bc that’s lame). He hits the opps from across the street. Ain’t nothing bout him sweet and his aim is elite. His gang is really bout it so he warns the opps if they cross them, they’ll roll 4 deep in an Impala to handle business. Other highlights from “EA Monster”:
KitKat
No Chaser
Ready
YG - Toxic: YG might be dropping a project soon as he’s been popping up with some singles in recents months. This is a thug love track that samples Mary J. Blige’s smash “Be Happy”. YG knows what his shawty really wants. His meat and his heart (and a Birkin and some Prada). She so wit it, he got her throwing B’s up. YG’s Toxic but he really loves her. He’d rather keep their relationship private and enjoy each other's company through the late night. Her friends are skeptical of him but he still introduced her to his family. She wants a title but he just wanna keep it wavy for now. He admits he loves her but she questions his motives sometimes.
Destroy Lonely - <3MYGNG: OK so Thursday night, music drops and Twitter starts going stupid for what they love. Destroy Lonely’s new album “No Stylist” was instantly trending. I never heard of Destroy Lonely before Thursday night but I gave the project a listen and it’s dope. Vibe is Playboi Carti/Yeat (and he’s signed to Carti’s label so it makes sense). My favorite track is <3MYGNG and anthem to DL’s squad. Beat immediately makes me bob my head. Destroy Loney’s gang likes to stack cash and get blowjobs. They getting so much bread they go shopping everyday. He always dresses fresh, wears cologne and always moves with a hitta. It’s a wonderful life he’s living. Check out “No Stylist” and these other standouts:
FAKENGGAS
TURNINUP
VETERAN (ft. Ken Carson)
Ron Isley & Beyonce - Make Me Say It Again Girl: OK so we know Beyonce’s “RENAISSANCE” album was a Part 1 of (we don’t know yet but rumors say 3). People are saying each part has a different vibe, the first a dance, the second R&B and the last Country. This new release may hint at that. It’s a re-rock of the Isley Brothers track with the same title and Beyonce sings and tweaks her lyrics to “Make me say it again Boy.” Hope we get Part 2 of “RENAISSANCE” sooner than later.
YungManny ft. Simi Liadi - THE STATION: DMV’s own YungManny dropped an album this week titled “OKANLAWON” (which is his last name according to my Googles). Great project, I really like “HOES & HALOS” and “THE STATION”. The latter track feature songstress Simi Liadi and sample’s Kanye’s “Say You Will”. YungManny doesn’t fuck with the BS. He overcomes obstacles but refuses to fight with his bros. He knows his time is coming and puts his trust in the Lord. Simi Liadi knows there are no bitties like her so don’t blow your blessing if you get to enter her orbit. More highlights from “OKANLAWON”:
HOES & HALOS
I'LL BE OKAY
INEVITABLE
Cordae - So With That: So Cordae dropped a 2-Pack with “So With That” and “Unacceptable”. When I first heard SWT I was like “Yeah, Ima definitely like this one over the other one” but “Unacceptable” is heat. Usually when an artist drops a 2-pack one is like a throwaway but the young spitter threw two 100mph fastballs back to back. If this is any indication of what’ll be on his next project then I can’t wait! Tough Tunes!
Lil Zay Osama - Had Nun: Chicago’s Lil Zay Osama dropped a project this week called “Trench Baby 3” and it features fellow Chi-town heavyweights Herbo & Durk. The project is full of street anthems but also some introspective shit, tracks about starting from the bottom. My favorite track “Had Nun” is one of them ones. LZO uses a more melodic flow and lets us know he had to grind for this. He worked his ass off now he having shit. The matriarchs of his family are proud of him. Everybody wanna be rich but nobody wanna put in the work. Zay did, and now his star is shining brighter than ever. Check out “Trench Baby 3” and these highlights:
Chase Em Down (ft. G Herbo)
Fuck My Cousin, Pt. II (ft. Lil Durk)
It’s Up
Blessings
DaBaby - Tough Skin: Big Baby Jesus dropped a new track. This one’s from the heart (like his best project to date “My Brother’s Keep (Long Live G)). Growing up in the struggle made him have Tough Skin. His mama and his big brother made him have Tough Skin. His uncle and his big cousin made him have Tough Skin. He keeps his problems tucked in because he knows the world don’t really give a fuck about them. He had to figure it out and he encourages us to do the same (and also have Tough Skin).
Megan Thee Stallion - NDA: Meg released a new album this week called “Traumazine”. It may be the final project in her deal with Carl Crawford’s 1501 label (She’s free!). My favorite track is NDA. Beat crazy and MTS talks her shit and also vows to bring real bitches & real niggas back. She also promises to sue the pants off the next person to break any NDA’s they signed. Other standouts from “Traumazine”:
Not Nice
Ms. Nasty
Flip-Flop
Sweetest Pie (with Dua Lipa)
