The Hit List Week 71: (August 29 - September 4)
Pi’erre Bourne - Shorty Diary: Superproducer Pi’erre Bourne dropped a new album this week called “Good Movie”. When you can make your own beats you can also save your faves for yourself. The project is hard and my favorite track is “Shorty Diary”. PB chants “Oh-Oh” as the bass kicks. His shorty got a stalker and he promises to protect her. She’s a supermodel and she hates her father (she cries on Father's Day). Pi’erre uses his melodic delivery to tell her story. He feels cool when he’s with her and just wants to pull up and get some food with her. Other highlights from “Good Movie”:
Hop In My Bed
Where You Going
Psane (ft. Don Toliver)
Safe Haven
Moving Too Fast (ft. Young Nudy)
DJ Drama & Jeezy - I Ain’t Gon Hold Ya: The legends are back at it! They made a classic Gangsta Grillz tape almost 20 years ago and they still cooking up Quality Street Music. Beat has a 80’s, Studio 54 feel, may be the best beat of the week (and one of the best of the year). Jeezy spits coke bars, brags about his exotic cars, jewelry, his transition to a real estate mogul and how he’s 100% legit now (now that’s a glow up).
Freddie Gibbs & Moneybagg Yo - Too Much: Gangsta Gibbs gearing up to drop his new project SSS (Soul Sold Separately) later this year. This is the 1st single. Gibbs has a rocky wrist, Forgiato tires on his Bentley, sips 1942, and always keeps a tool because he has so many enemies (he ain’t lyin…) Moneybagg gets 200K for a verse and for a show. He calls out internet gangstas. He sips Wock and chases it with a puff of Za. He’s got a bussdown Cuban link chain and a matching Richard Mille watch (the feature and show checks must be coming in abundance).
Ari Lennox & Summer Walker - Queen Space: Ari Lennox dropped an EP this week called “Away Message”. Four tracks of flames. I really love the opening track with Summer Walker “Queen Space”. Soulful with what sounds like live drums, Ari sings that she deserves something pure. She knows her love is a privilege and her man shouldn’t take her for granted. Don’t waste her Queen Space. It’s true elevation when she lets you taste. It’ll rearrange the way you think. Summer can’t seem to stay away from her boo and asks if you miss her just say that (even though she don’t want to tell mans what to think). She knows he wants her to be his sweet escape.
38 Spesh ft. Freeway & Che Noir - Painful: Hip-Hop! 38 Spesh got verses from Che Noir & Philadelphia Free on this track. It’s street pain music. Che kicks it off and gives advice to her younger self. She tells herself don’t rush for the luxury and she knows it's hard to have a parent become a fiend and take on parental responsibilities (including taking care of her siblings). She tells herself to stop getting drunk to numb the pain. 38 Spesh had to re-up so much, he didn’t have a chance to save. He was locked up in solitary confinement for over 20 hours at a time. He had to hustle to survive and he can tell some of the other cats in the game can’t relate. Freeway made Dua (prayed) in the dirt. He keep the FN on him to protect himself. He experienced the loss of multiple children but is maintaining. He made a million in the trenches before he met Hov and he still moving on up like the Jeffersons.
Dusty Locane - Rolando 2 (Catch The Rain): NY Drill Rapper Dusty Locane dropped a new project this week called “ROLLIN N CONTROLLIN”. It has an EP feel as it has multiple versions of the title track “ROLLN N CONTROLLIN” and Part 1 and 2 of Rolando (so it’s like 4 diff tracks even though it’s 7 tracks). Rolando 2 is my favorite. Beat is super duper hard but the “Catch the Rain” vocal loop and how DL uses it to bridge his vocals the way Cam did with “Oh Boy” is what makes this one special.
EST Gee - Hell: EST Gee shows a new dimension this week. We don’t usually get the melodic delivery from him and he spits that way on the chorus (sounds like a lil autotune too). He talks about the homies staying silent if they get caught. He also talks about the numerous legal firearms he has. The streets say he came up off a fentanyl (he’s not confirming). If he gets another chance to level up, he’ll probably win again (it’s in his DNA).
iLoveMakonnen & Izaya Tiji - Cash Keep Comin: Cali artist iLoveMakonnen dropped a new project this week called “Summer ‘22”. Summer vibes throughout (duh). My favorite track is the opening track “Cash Keep Comin” with Izaya Tiji. The guys ain’t worried about nothin as long as that Cash Keep Comin. Makonnen drinks, smokes, and occasionally pops a Perc. He also likes to chill at home and watch the news. IT is down with OPP and sippin from double cups. He’s got many pistols so be careful if you approach him on some opp shit. Give “Summer ‘22”a spin and don’t miss these standouts:
Blue Cash
All My Shit is Stupid (ft. NBA YoungBoy)
Shaking Ice
Built Like That (with Konnen Springtime)
KILLY - CEO: Canadian spitter KILLY dropped a loosie this week. The beat is bouncy and KILLY talks about his boss status and his A1 jewelry. He also smashes many bitties (including some who smoke bogies). He tries to keep it lowkey and encourages everyone to play their role.
Snoop Dogg - Paid My Dues: Snoop dropped a new project this week called “The Metaverse: The NFT Drop, Vol. 2”. I’m guessing he sold the project as an NFT too (especially since some of the tracks were previously released but this is probably their first time on a project). Of the new tracks my favorite is “Paid My Dues”. It reminds me of the theme of Hov’s “GOD DID” verse. Snoop talks about all the dues he’s paid, how far he’s come. Raising 3 successful children. Keeping his marriage together despite the hoes. And, beating a murder case just as his career was taking off. Check out “The Metaverse: The NFT Drop, Vol. 2” and these highlights:
Live How You Want
It Really Turns Me On (ft. Chris Brown)
Rolling Down the Highway (ft. Nate Dogg & Warren G)
U Neva Had It Like This (ft. Warren G)
NBA Youngboy & Quando Rondo - Give Me a Sign: Youngboy recently announced he’s having his 9th (or 10th) child and looks to be engaged as his gf was sporting a giant rock on her ring finger. Rondo recently endured tragedy as one of his homies was murdered in the same vehicle as him, the shooter alledgedly was after QR. The guys are heading out on tour (1st stop Chicago) and they dropped this loosie to kick things off.
G Perico & Gotdamnitdupri - Pistol Grip Poetry: Cali spitter G Perico and producer Gotdamnitdupri dropped a collab project this week called “LA SUMMERS 2”. West Coast vibes throughout, that laid back P music. My favorite track is Pistol Grip Poetry. Downtempo, laced with horns, G Perico advises the homies to watch their steps. He reps Enterprise Clique and the Blue all day. He suggests we trust the process (as he has). He made his own lane and now he’s chillin under the palm trees. He prays to God the opps won’t provoke him because if they do, they gettin that Pistol Grip Poetry. Other highlights from “LA SUMMERS 2”:
The Clicc
Did A Lot
I Pray
Camron & A-Trak - All I Really Wanted: Killa Cam dropped a collab track with producer A-trak. Cam gives a mini biography over the soul-sampled beat. He talks about growing up a baller (in more ways than one). He pays homage to the homies he lost and also flexes checking everything off his bucket list by the time he hit 30. “Money, cars, clothes, Hood Respect.”
Gucci Mane & Baby Racks - Look Ma I Did It: Gu-wop has done a masterful job loading up the New 1017 roster. And as a smart businessman and established talent he gives the new blood an assist by hopping on a track. Same thing goes for new artist Baby Racks. They said Baby Racks couldn’t do it but he did it. He warns not to play with his money. And even though he may have just appeared on our radar, he been a boss. Gucci used to trap out a room in Decatur and now he ballin out in Vegas. His hustle is relentless, he’s got the purest intentions, and he won’t stop till he run up a billion.
Sha EK & Bandmanrill - Who You Touch: My new favorite place to discover music is Apple Music’s New Hip-Hop playlist. This track was one of the songs I found there this week. High-energy, aggressive NY drill where Sha EK ask these so called street niggas to run they stats. Beat crazy, song is super catchy. What I didn’t expect was to find out from a different website that he actually dropped a whole project called “Face Of The What”. I listened to the whole thing and it’s got a lot of bangers. If you like NY Drill and/or a nigga yelling at you for 36 minutes (great for the gym), go give “Face Of The What” a listen and check out these standouts:
Ain’t Drop In a Minute
Story Time
Difference Between (ft. SleazyWorld Go)
Shot In The Party
Don’t Forget That
Beat The Odds
We Droppin (ft. PGF Nuk)
Steelz & Baby Stone Gorillas - Feel Real Good: Another Apple Music New Hip-Hop playlist discovery. The Jazzy horns really sauce this beat up. Steelz & BSG are at the top and it feels good. They rich Bloods and don’t show the hoes no love. They’re the chosen ones and enjoy performing live. They are very accurate with their legal firearms and aren’t afraid to use them. Tough Tune.
RJmrLA & O.T. Genasis - Aye Bitch: Cali in the building. RJ got a brand new stick and is itchin to christen it. He pushes a Bentley truck and enjoys receiving fellatio. OT spends hella money on jewelry. He’s been all around the world and everywhere he goes, women want to give him some vagina. All his poles have switches and all his bros also have sticks (translation: they’re all heavily armed).
Whookilledkenny - Teach Her The Game: Yet another track I found on the Apple Music New Hip-Hop playlist. Dope uptempo beat with a speedy high hat loop. WKK had a bad little bitty and he had to Teach Her The Game. He not tryna wife right now, he just tryna chill, fly around the world, and see how life is. He tryna put shorty in a Benz and advises her to leave them other busters alone.
Bfb Da Pacman & Gizzle Gilliante - FREE YSL: I found this on YT Sunday night. Detroit type-beat, Lunch Crew shit. Gizzle G is the biggest dawg. He’s a problem solver who’s riding and sliding. When he caught the rat in his crew, he put that iron him. He only smokes the Za and moves weight like a trucker. BfB only fucks with squirters and if shorty says her pussy is top shelf, he asks her to test it. If he gets pulled over, he pretends to be special to try to get a warning. He got fatter after he got rich so now he fuckin’ with salad. He knows inditing rappers off lyrics is goofy so he demands that they FREE YSL.
