The Hit List Week 73: (September 12 - September 18)
WizKid - Bad To Me: Nigerian megastar WizKid dropped a loosie this week. After having his song “Essence” with Tems be declared the greatest song ever by Kanye, he’s back with another Afrobeats banger. Dance vibes as WK asks shawty to buss it his way. He’s got money on his mind but he wants to spend the evening with a special lady.
EST Gee ft. Jeezy - The Realest: Street niggas rejoice! CMG’s EST Gee dropped a new album this week called “I Never Felt Nun”. Full-length (pause), it’s got something for everyone on there. Gangsta shit, tracks for the ladies, something for the radio and some street pain music. Not often does an artist save arguably the best track for last. Jeezy’s verse goes longer than 16 bars and he reminds us of why he’s considered one of the greatest of his era. Check out “I Never Felt Nun” and these highlights:
Shoot It Myself (ft. Future)
Hell
Backstage Passes (ft. Jack Harlow)
Blood
Get Em’ Geeski
Sabotage (ft. Bryson Tiller)
Voices In My Head
BLEU & Nicki Minaj - Love In The Way: The Queen from Queens and Alabama's BLEU dropped a new single this week. Beat super crazy with some Afrobeats sauce as the two talk about the pains of love. They need their bae and wish bae wouldn’t push them away. It hurts to love again and it’s all because of that once special someone.
Symba & DJ Drama ft. Pusha T - Never End Up Broke, Pt. 2: Cali’s Symba linked with DJ Drama for his 1st Gangsta Grillz “tape” called “Results Take Time”. Whole project dope, it was hard to pick a fave but one that stuck out was the Pusha T collab “Never End Up Broke, Pt. 2”. If the beat doesn’t get you, Symba and Pusha’s verses definitely will. Go listen to “Results Take Time” and these standouts:
Overnight
Never Change (ft. Roddy Ricch)
Trust Issues
On God
Soul Ties
Find A Way (ft. IIAN RICH)
No Sleep (ft. Key Glock & Idontknowjeffery)
Better Days
Fabolous - Easy Freestyle: I don’t think it’s hyperbole to say Fab is one of the best lyricists of all time. Even more impressive is his longevity and ability to perform at a high level for decades. He’s back with another loosie/freestyle. Freestyle in the modern sense of the word (hookless tracks). Fab mentions the Gucci/Jeezy Verzuz and calls for unity in the community. He ain’t with the sucker shit and he def don’t poli with rats. He leaves things in God’s hands but still does his part. He could go dolo but he always brings the squad along. He knows some niggas switch up so he’s always watching his 6 for backstabbers.
OT Genasis - Thang Thangin: The rich Crip back at it with a club banger for your headtop. OT trusts his hittas and never trusts the bitties. His credit score is 800 and his street credit is high as well. He don’t mind spending a lil bread on his main bae and he loves it even more when she shakes that Thang and that Thang starts Thangin. His flow on this one reminds me of Juicy J on “Slob On My Knob”.
Jessie Reyez & 6LACK - FOREVER: Canadian songstress Jessie Reyez dropped a new project this week called “YESSIE”. She showed off her range with some upbeat tracks where she’s rapping and some traditional R&B joints where she really flexes her vocal muscles. I really love the collab with 6LACK, “FOREVER”. Jessie shoots her shot and tells mans she has what he needs. She knows sometimes you can love someone and they don’t quite love you back. She also knows that he knows that she’s one of a kind and implores him to stay Forever. 6LACK tryna fly his main damie all across the world, so she gotta have a valid passport. She a nasty girl and he's gonna give her everything she asks for as long as she sticks by his side (presumably Forever). Other highlights from “YESSIE”:
MOOD
QUEEN ST. W
TITO’S
ONLY ONE
STILL C U
Juelz Santana - Whitney: Dipset! Juelz dropped a loosie this week and the last song I’d think he’d sample is Whitney Houston’s “I WIll Always Love You” but here we are. Song hard, Juelz talks about his come up, getting it out the mud, ducking shots, busting back, moving yay, getting cake, and copping the finest of whips.
D Smoke - El Rey: D Smoke is already certified. After going from a hip-hop competition show to being nominated for Best Rap Album at the Grammys, he’s shown that he ain’t no gimmick. On his newest offering El Rey he pays homage to the Latino community as it is currently Hispanic Heritage Month. He even spits some bars in Español.
KA$HDAMI ft. NoCap - less than me: Teen sensation KA$HDAMI dropped a new project this week called “DAMINATION” and it’s fucking special. Out of all the drops this week, I’ve listened to this one the most so far. Whole thing is a vibe, what I found particularly interesting is the way he mixed a new age flow with some throwback sounds like the 90’s R&B sauce on “u&i”. I loved the No Cap collab. Downtempo, the message is clear: “You cannot hate if you less than me”. If you start some shit KD gon finish it, so just chill. Check out “DAMINATION” and make sure to listen for these standouts:
Phoenix
Famine (ft. XLOVCLO)
Posed2be
u&i
no lovin (with ILYFALL)
Tee Grizzley - Robbery Pt. 4: Tee Grizzley dropped another installment of his “Robbery” song series, the best serialized music storytelling since Robert Kelly’s “Trapped in the Closet”. In the last episode he goes to trial and gets convicted for trying to get some get back. On this one, he wins an appeal, gets out and immediately gets it back in blood then gets to the money. After cleaning up the mess he has to purchase a new firearm and gets a 2nd dummy gun to test his homie’s allegiance (genius). At this point the plot thickens and instead of spoiling it, I’ll let you listen.
Dixson ft. Vic Mensa & Michael Armstead - ARE YOU REALLY THERE: Roc Nation signee Dixson dropped a new project this week called “004DAISY”. My favorite track is the Vic Mensah, Michael Armstead collab. Starts off downtempo then the beat picks up. The guys plead for shawty to stay as they contemplate if they did all they could to make it work. Vic shines in his verse, effortlessly going from a melodic flow to bars on bars on bars (and even referencing “Pure Souls” from Ye’s “Donda”). Check out “004DAISY” and don’t miss these highlights:
DAY-OFF
HEAT (ft. Tinashe)
MOVIESTAR
BUTTERFLY (ft. Stolen Nova)
SWEETER
Rich Homie Quan - Risk Takers: Rich Homie Quan has seen a resurgence over the past year. He’s been dropping loosies (and I think one 2 pack), he’s getting back in the groove, and all the music has been excellent. The streak continues with “Risk Takers”, a track where Quan reflects about his journey to get where he is today. Beat laced with keys as RHQ talks about his losses and his triumphs, the highs and the lows, the pain and the gain. He took risks and they paid off.
Young Devyn ft. Fivio Foreign - Outside: As I’ve stated a million times I’m a sucker for a sample. And, Young Devyn took Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger”, added some NY Drill Sauce, added Fivi, and now she got a certified banger. At least Adam Levine has something to be proud of this week :)
Trapboy Freddy - Too Much Booty: Another dope sample this week. This one sample’s Soundmaster T’s “2 Much Booty (In Da Pants)”. Freddy’s version is more uptempo and perfect for the strip club. It’ll be playing at jiggle joints all across the world. If you like this one check out Trapboy Freddy’s “Smoke” with Young Thug. I still have that one in rotation.
Hotboy Wes - Master P: One of my favorite tracks of the week. New 1017 signee Hotboy Wes shows off another dimension on this one. He uses a melodic flow on the hook and if ya don’t know, melodic gangsta music is the wave right now. He talks about his big momma being proud of him and succeeding despite the haters doubting him. He’s from the jungle so don’t test him.
Fred the Godson - Hold The Weight: One of NY’s underground kings tragically passed away at the height of the Covid pandemic (due to complications from Covid). His estate dropped this loosie and it’s a display of his lyrical superiority. Interesting note: this track was produced by 38 Spesh and it has that boom-bap sound that is Spesh’s specialty. Glad Spesh blessed the God with this beat. Long Live Fred!
Fresco Trey - 7/11: I first heard Fresco Trey when he dropped “Draft Kings” last year and encouraged us to bet on ourselves. He’s back with another one and I’ve got it in heavy rotation. He apologizes to his mama because he ain’t stopping for a traffic stop. He had to cut some people out of his life so he can elevate, and losing ain’t an option, so it’s only up from here. He knows the haters gonna hate, it’s part of the game.
Pap Chanel - Show Me What You Got: I love the rock vibes on this one. It’s triumphant and motivational. “Show me what you got… Go head and do it”. Pap is a boss and she don’t need interruptions. She makes her own moves and sets her own rules. It’s Pop-py, it's bop-py, and it’s super catchy.
Salmin Swaggz - Stay On It: This one is a vibe! I’ll admit, I don’t understand all the lyrics on this one (most of the lyrics are not in English) but the beat and the flow… it’s one of them ones that’ll make it feel like summertime even in the dead of winter. Check it out, I think you might love it too.
