The Hit List Week 74: (September 19 - September 25)
Fabolous & Dave East - Bach to Bach: Fab and Dave East been cooking up heat together for sometime and this week they dropped a new loosie called Bach to Bach (referencing Mercedes’ Maybach line not Drake’s epic diss track.) Fab is a car fanatic and has a matte black Maybach that he calls Matt Hasselback (I see what you did there John). Dave doesn’t battle rap and his outfits always coordinate. Track is extra dope as the guys go back and forth with their bars like tennis.
Haviah Mighty - Honey Bun: Canada in the building! When I see “Haviah Mighty” I know there’s gonna be a top tier track when I hit play. “Honey Bun” is just that. Over a Detroit type beat HM talks her shit. She likes big booty bitties (just like me) and declares herself the new school Lauryn Hill. All these years she let the haters get they shit off but now it’s time for her to get hers. The beat flips on the chorus to a soulful, key-laced, drumless track as Haviah delivers a melodic hook.
Cam’ron, A-Trak, Jim Jones & Styles P - Think Boy: Cam’ron & A-Track dropped their collab project “U Wasn’t There” this week. Dope offering with some previously released tracks, an epic interlude by Dame and some new heat. I loved the new version of “This is My City” from Purple Haze 2. I also love “Think Boy” with Styles & Jim. It has a Caribbean vibe to it and the guys surf the beat like the sharpshooters that they are. Go check out “U Wasn’t There”, no skips.
Gucci Mane, Bic Fizzle & BigWalkDog - Red Flag: BigWalkDog dropped a project this week (but we’ll get to that later) but he was also featured on this New 1017 showcase track with Big Boss Gucci and Bic Fizzle. Over a TayKeith beat the guys describe what they consider Red Flags including: baby mama drama, not being a boss, a chick who suck meat but don’t swallow, and also chicks who live wit her mama (even if they do swallow).
Lucki - DNA: Chicago’s Lucki dropped a new album this week called “FLAWLESS LIKE ME”. I still have Lucki’s “4 The Betta” in rotation and if you love that one, you’ll love this new project. One song that stuck out to me is “DNA” where he confesses to being on drugs like his Aunty. You gotta love that honesty and also it’s quite hilarious throwing your Aunt out there like that. We all got a former/current crackhead aunty so we can all relate, but it’s definitely different to hear it over a saucy ass beat. Other highlights from “FLAWLESS LIKE ME”:
GEEKED N BLESSED
KAPITOL DENIM (with Future)
WHITE HOUSE (ft. Babyface Ray)
13
NOTICED YA
OUT OF LVE
MY WAY/CODEINE COWBOY
Tee Grizzley - Jay & Twan 1: Tee Grizzley has found a niche. I don’t think anyone in hip-hop is committed to doing storytelling series like TG. He just dropped Robbery 4 last week and this week he’s back with Jay & Twan 1. I don’t wanna spoil it, but I’ll say he’ll have to get a lil creative if there’s gonna be a Jay & Twan 2. The beat crazy and Tee is great at telling these condensed, serialized hood tales. Give it a listen and you’ll see why there may not be a Part 2.
D-Block Europe ft. Burna Boy - She’s Not Anyone: D-Block Europe dropped a new project this week called “Lap 5”. Dope project, I really found myself gravitating towards the tracks where ladies were the subject matter. One of those, “She’s Not Anyone” with Burna Boy, happens to be one of my faves. Afrobeats vibes with a beat by superproducer JAE5. The guys deliver melodic bars about their main ting. She knows what the guys need and because of that they’ll give her whatever she wants. She got that wet wet and the guys are ready and willing to drive her around in exotic coupes and cop her whatever she pleases. Check out “Lap 5” and these standouts:
Conor McGregor
I Really Miss You
Fantasy
Lonely Lovers (ft. Ed Sheeran)
Black Beatles
Money Man - Double Back: Money Man dropped a loosie this week. He talks about his bougie chick and all the finer things she’s into including Mercedes, Hermes, Louis V, Chanel, Birkins, Dior, Bottega, Gallery Dept, Moncler. MM is down to fly her around the world because her box is top tier. So good in fact that he had to Double Back.
Baby Money ft. Jeezy - All Hustle: Quality Control’s Baby Money dropped a new album this week called “New Money” and it’s super hard. That new Detroit wave is slowly but surely taking over Hip-Hop and BM is another young gunner. Jeezy been Detroit affiliated since his BMF days and worked closely with Doughboyz Cashout during his run. This the 2nd week in a row he’s had an A1 feature and looks to be having a Renaissance of sorts with his DJ Drama track and these assists he’s dishing to the youngins. You gotta go listen to “New Money” and especially these highlights:
Been Rich (ft. Tay B)
Keep Quiet
Get Dangerous
Double Crossed
Tables Turn
Stormzy - Mel Made Me Do It: British OG Stormzy dropped a new track called “Mel Made Me Do It” and it set the streets on fire because the video features legendary football (soccer) coach Jose Mourhino. The track is excellent, it starts off with a voiceover from his mom (so I’m guessing Mel is his mum). Beat is downtempo but it’s perfect for Stormzy to flow methodically and talk his shit with a lyrical onslaught only delivered by the best of the best, full stop.
BigWalkDog ft. BIG30 - For Certain: New 1017’s BigWalkDog has started off his run on fire and he dropped off his debut album this week called “Trick City”. Whole project slaps. I’m a big fan of the BIG30 collab “For Certain”. Big30 advises the opps to watch they mouth. He’s got a glock with a switch and he’s been itching to use it. He’s serving ZaZa, that hard, and that soft and he’s got so much ice you can skate on it. WalkDog is strapped wherever he’s at and sometimes he likes to mix different brands of lean for the fun of it. Check out “Trick City” and these standouts:
Trick
Know What I Mean (with Gucci Mane)
Pray
Whole Lotta Ice (ft. Lil Baby & Pooh Sheisty)
I’m The One
Poppin (with Gucci Mane)
Trap God (ft. Gucci Mane)
Came from Da Bottom
Freddie Gibbs - Dark Hearted: Gangsta Gibbs is gearing up to drop his new album “SSS” this week and he dropped off this loosie before the full project. Over a haunting beat he uses a melodic flow to talk about his come up, the hurdles to success and he also prays that his chopper never jams. No matter what, he’s still a rich nigga with real ties and he’s Dark Hearted.
wifisfuneral - Miami: Florida Man wifisfuneral dropped a project this week called “4 Month Binge Before Revenge”. Dope project. My favorite track is “Miami” where he Wifi pops his shit, pops some pills, and pops some poonan too. Other highlights from “4 Month Binge Before Revenge”:
Ahhhhh
Save Me from Myself
New Charger
Glorilla ft. Cardi B - Tomorrow 2: Listen, if you’re reading this, you’re probably pretty active on the internet (and probably tapped in to the music game) and if you ain’t heard this song yet, you will soon. Glorilla been buzzin since FNF took over the clubs (and Tik Tok) and she gets a major co-sign from Bardi on this one (who also gives a nod to Ice Spice in her verse). It’s good to see the ladies working together to get that paper (because sometimes they don’t…)
DUSTY LOCANE, Rah Swish, Ron Suno & OnPointLikeOP - BUST DOWN: NY’s drill scene has been much maligned in the media recently. Mayor Eric Adams said he was thinking of banning Drill Music (clown shit) before having a sit down meeting with some NY Drill Rappers. Then NYPD banned Sha Ek, 22Gz, Ron Suno from Rolling Loud (goofy shit). No matter, the guys is still working, still putting out that heat and that’s what Dusty, Ron, Rah & OP did with their new collab EP “SAY DAT”. If you like NY Drill this is right up your alley (pause, unpause). Check out “SAY DAT” and these standouts:
TIE DIE
SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST
YG - Maniac: Like Freddie Gibbs, YG is gearing up for an album drop soon and blessed us with another loosie (Another one **Khaled Voice**). West Coast vibes, YG lost his mind and turned into a maniac. He rocks Tom Ford cologne, pushes exotic whips, and only messes with the baddest of bitties. He looks like a million bucks (and feels like it too).
SiR - Nothing Even Matters: Inglewood’s SiR dropped a new track this week. It’s soulful and it’s dedicated to his main damie. She makes him his best self and he’s looking to make the connection stronger. He’d die for her, he knows she’s a diamond in the rough and when they touch, Nothing Even Matters. He wants her forever.
Quinn XCII ft. Big Sean - Common: Another dope discovery on the Apple Music New Hip-Hop playlist. This is my first time hearing Quinn XCII and after doing my Googles he’s a singer from Detroit. Well, he got a big cosign from another artist hailing from the D, Sean Grande (that’s Big Sean in Spanish if you dunno). A snap (clap actually) beat with piano keys leading the way. This is a song dedicated to the ladies (common theme on The Hit List). QX reminisces about the good times (smoking and getting the munchies) and also the things they have in Common (hence the song title). Him and his shawty go together so perfectly. Big Sean is grateful for his old lady. She showed him his inner beauty and she was with him when he tripped on shrooms for the first time. Her family loves Sean Don and he feels at peace when he’s with her.
FNF Chop ft. Fivio Foreign - Repeat: “Gang shit bitch!” This beat is one of the hardest on the list. FNF shits on these niggas, he don’t gotta compete. He keeps a Glock on him and if it’s up then it’s stuck (ain’t no dropping the beef). He just bought a watch and is about to cop some iced out teeth. Fivi attracts women (even if they’re in committed relationships) and if he pops a perc he might grant their wishes. He also pushes 2 door foreigns and he has trouble lugging around all the cash he’s been making.
FRVRFRIDAY - ALL EARS: Canadian artist FRVRFRIDAY dropped a new bop this week. It’s soulful with a snap beat. FF sings to that special someone. He’s tryna get to know shorty better so he implores her to talk to him because whatever she’s got to say, he’s All Ears.
