THE HIT LIST WEEK 76: (October 3 - OCTOBER 9)
Steelz, $tupid Young & G Perico - Old School Chevy: I first came across Steelz when the track “Feel Real Good” dropped a few weeks ago (I’ve had it in heavy rotation since). He dropped an album this week called “Steel Alive” and it’s my favorite drop of the week. West Coast vibes throughout (perfect for bumping in the whip) and some Top Tier Cali features. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but Old School Chevy with $tupid Young & G Perico is among the best. Do yourself a favorite and go check out “Steel Alive”. Tracks below are highlights but really there are no skips:
I Made It (with RJmrLA)
My Hittas (with YeloHill)
Feel Real Good (with Baby Stone Gorillas)
Fly Shit (with Dre Rocket & FTG JREED ft. Kalan.FrFr)
Loca (with Jonn Hart & Kap G)
Ima Savage (with Rucci)
What’s The Price (with Derek King & Casey Veggies ft. Compton Av)
Contraband (with TrenchMobb)
Money Man - Get Right: Money Man might be gearing up to drop a new project soon. He dropped this loosie off after giving us “Double Back” a couple weeks ago. “Get Right” is a dope track with the repeated refrain “had to Get Right, Get Right, Get Right”. Money Man, serves the custos, collects diamonds, and fucks the juices out his bitties, and he’s getting money in all types of currencies.
22nd Jim ft. Lil Bean - Get Dangerous: 22nd Jim went through a rebrand recently (formerly Offset Jim) but the music is still super high quality. Lil Bean dropped one of my favorite projects of 2022, and when I saw this, I knew I was in for a treat. 2 of the Bay’s finest on a Detroit-type beat with a West Coast bop to it. If you got functioning ears, as soon as you hear this, you’ll putj it in heavy rotation. I guarantee it!
Quavo & Takeoff - Bars Into Captions: ⅔ of the Migos dropped their debut “Only Built For Infinity Links” the title a nod to Raekwon the Chef’s classic album. Great project, my favorite track is easily “Bars Into Captions” Quay & Tay’s flip of Outkast’s “So Fresh, So Clean”. Other highlights from “Only Built For Infinity Links”:
2 Infinity Links
HOTEL LOBBY (Unc & Phew)
See Bout It (with Mustard)
To The Bone (with NBA Youngboy)
Look @ This
Mixy (with Summer Walker)
Us vs Them (with Gucci Mane)
Lil Yachty - Poland: Lil Boat dropped this little ditty on SoundCloud and it set the internet on fire. Drake co-signed it. I saw tweets from random internet celebs to established lyricists like JID talkin bout “I took the Woooooccckk to Poland”. The song refers to Yachty transporting prescription cough syrup aka Lean, Sizzurp, Promethazine & Codeine, Drank, Double Cup and also by the brand name Wockhardt to the Eastern European nation. The beat has that SoundCloud electro-beat feel and Yachty’s elongation of Wock is super catchy. It looks like Cole Bennett (and Lyrical Lemonade) is shooting the video and I think Spotify tweeted about it as well.
Jean Dawson ft. George Clanton - BLACK MICHAEL JACKSON*: Jean Dawson (whose website makes mine look like child’s play) dropped a new project this week called “CHAOS NOW*”. I think I’ve heard him on a feature before so I gave it a listen. It’s an eclectic mix of sounds. Some emo, pop, rap, and acoustic vibes, a lil something for everybody. I loved the “BLACK MICHAEL JACKSON*” track with George Clanton as it samples Stevie Wonder’s “All I Do” and as I’ve stated many times before, I’m a sucker for a sample. Check out “CHAOS NOW*” and these standouts:
GLORY*
POSITIVE ONE NEGATIVE ONE*
SCREW FACE*
PIRATE RADIO*
Ty Dolla $ign & Mustard ft. Lil Durk - My Friends: Y’all know what happens when Mustard and Ty Dolla get together? Insta-smash. Radio-ready bop, dedicated to the homies, the ones who stay loyal through thick and thin. They get a nice assist from Smurk who fits in seamlessly with the West Coast sound.
Alex Vaughn - I’m Leaving: I love a pleasant surprise. We don’t get a ton of R&B albums every week, so when we do, I listen. And rarely do I hear one that sounds like those traditional R&B classics, but Alex Vaughn’s new album “The Hurtbook” is one of them ones. She has a great voice, the arrangement and lyrics through the project are top notch. I really loved her fed up anthem “I’m Leaving”. She realizes mans brings her joy but brings her even more pain. She can’t decide whether to stay or to go. She feels like she’s going crazy. She wants to stay but homie keeps making it worse. R&B Lovers need to to check out “The Hurtbook” and these highlights:
So It Be
Keep That Energy
Do You Ever
Demon Time
NLE Choppa ft. 2Rare - Do It Again: I first heard 2Rare on “Pop Shit” last week and upon doing my Googles, saw that he’s a young artist from Philly. He’s back this week featuring on an NLE Choppa track but there’s no doubting 2Rare is developing a signature sound that is rooted in the Jersey Club, very uptempo, hella-bass family. This track falls into that category with NLE Choppa adjusting wonderfully to the frenetic pace. The soul sample gives it a special sauce and the dance in the Jolo-shot video will surely have all the Tikkers Tokking.
NBA Youngboy ft. Shy Glizzy - Hard: YB dropped a new project this week called “3800 Degrees” with the cover a re-rock of fellow Louisiana rapper Juveline’s 400 Degreez. Youngboy's last project “Realer 2” (which dropped last month) was more melodic, this one is a rap slap. Hard beats, aggressive flow, YB came for blood on this one. I love the Shy Glizzy collab “Hard”. It’s downtempo but it’s got the keys and the bass that make it knock in the whip (I weight whip readiness heavily). YB threatens to shoot all his opps, headshots only. He then removes all their valuables (makes sense). He also professes his love for Amiri clothing. Shy Glizzy has shootouts with his cousin (who is his opp). He knows some cats be claiming to be in the trenches but they be lying. He just got a new coupe and promises to personally handle anyone who disrespects him and his. Other highlights from “3800 Degreez”:
Back On My Feet
Won’t Step On Me
No Alarm
Thug Nigga Story (ft. E-40)
Tee Grizzley - Tez & Tone 1: So apparently Tee Grizz got a whole album dropping with these hood tales of his. He got songs about Robberies, Teacher-Student Love, but Tez & Tone 1 is in the same vein as Jay & Twan 1, some real street soldier shit. If you love TG’s storytelling so far, give this one a listen. They’re also great stories to play for your kids at night if they not some mark ass bitches (respectfully).
G Herbo ft. Benny The Butcher - Real Rap: G Herbo dropped a new album this week called “Survivor’s Remorse”. This was one half though, the A Side. I liked the Benny the Butcher collab “Real Rap”. The beat is boom-bappy but also a lil trippy and a lil Rock & Roll. G Herbo likes to drill but also likes to pay his bills. He also enjoys watching Disney movies with his kids. Benny is not from the blogger era and vows to rain terror. He feels his stats make him an All-American and he doesn’t mess with broke bitties. Check out “Real Rap” and these standouts:
FWM (with Yosohn)
Aye (ft. Offset)
Paid (with Essex)
Outside Looking In
A Boogie ft. Roddy Ricch - B.R.O. (Better Ride Out): A Boogie is gearing up to drop his “Me vs. Me” project (formerly A Boogie vs. Artist aka AVA) and this looks to be the first single. Like Ty Dolla’s “My Friends” earlier in the list, it’s a homie anthem. Bouncy snap beat, A Boogie tells his homies they better ride for him, and slide for him. His niggas are like blood to him. Roddy buys Birkins for his bitties and drives million dollar whips. The projects show him love and him and Boogie are like cousins.
Grip - Popular Demand: ATL’s own Grip dropped a new album this week called “5 and a Fuck You”. Dope project with a Grip’s high-level lyricism on full display. I really like “Popular Demand”. It has a haunting boom bap beat with some organ keys. Grip doesn’t give a fuck, he knows cats are selling out to get what they got. He knows they’re gimmicks and all they care about is booty & fashion. If niggas plot on him and his mans, he gonna drop them where they stands. Check out “5 and a Fuck You” and don’t miss these highlights:
Cook Up
Da Benzo
Good
Many Thanks
Jazmine Sullivan - Stand Up: Jazmine Sullivan has the voice of a Goddess. She dropped this track this week and it appears on the soundtrack for the new movie “Till” the story of Emmett Till, his murder, and his mother’s courage to have an open casket funeral after he was mutilated by his murderers. The song is powerful, triumphant and encourages us all to get up off our ass and Stand Up for something bigger than us. Keep fighting and keep on moving.
Rich Homie Quan - Kno No More: After a hiatus, Rich Homie is back with “Family & Mula” his first project in quite a few years. His signature voice hasn’t changed and he’s really gotten into his motivational street bag (a la Jeezy). I liked all the songs he dropped leading up to the 8-track project, and of the new tracks, “Kno No More” really stood out. Quan got it out the mud and he lost some homies. He tries to enjoy where life has taken him including Bentleys and Penthouse suites. He doesn’t care what people think about him. You might not like him but you will respect him. Other standouts from “Family & Mula”:
Risk Takers
Another One
Bishop Nehru - Wow!: NY artist Bishop Nehru dropped a loosie this week (that I found on my favorite hidden gem finder: The Apple Music New Hip-Hop playlist). Soulful track, Nehru has reached his dreams and found peace. He don’t care what the haters talking about. He’s at ease now. He’s on his feet, he’s got his green, he’s got his cream, Balenciaga head to toe, he’s good. His flow on this one reminds me of Montana of 300.
LaRussell, Deaf Heff & HeyKujo - Perfect Timing: Cali’s LaRussell dropped a new collab project with Deaf Heff this week called “I Hate When Life’s Going Great”. Dope mix of sounds throughout the album. My favorite track is Perfect Timing. It’s a funky track, kinda poppy, something you could hear Bruno Mars on. LaRussell knows Perfect Timing sets things in motion. It can kill or heal like the ocean. He’s just been making his money, trying to pay his dues. The ad libs on this one are top tier. Wow! Give “I Hate When Life’s Going Great” a listen and especially these highlights:
Run!
Gotham
Making it Easy
KenTheMan - Baddest: KenTheMan sampled the Cash Money Classic “Back That Azz Up” and it’s the best sample of that track ever! Better than Drake’s (no shade). It uses snaps, heavy bass and has that Louisiana flavor. KTM talks all her shit on the track and plants her flag as the Baddest in the city (whichever city she’s in). This should be playing in clubs everywhere and I love how she ended the track with “Duh! Bitch!” Tough Tune.
Lou Phelps - Out My Face: Canada’s Lou Phelps dropped a new track this week, produced by his blood brother Kaytranada (what an assist!). LP wants a hundred mil, all without a deal. He asks all those not contributing to that goal to get Out his Face (and don’t @ him either).
SipTee ft. EST Gee - On 10: Another great find on the Apple Music New Hip-Hop playlist. SipTee is Him and he be on 10 when he walks him. He’s tryna put that coochie in a coffin and he’s ain't the Weeknd but he do this often. EST Gee got a million in cars and 200 thousand on his arm (his watch). He knows life is hard, so he tries to relax by getting massages from bad bitties. His opps say they real, but he knows they’re a facade.
