The Hit List week 77: (October 10 - October 16)
Camron, Mase & Jadakiss - GLH: Three New York Legends dropped a collab track this week. The beat is triumphant, the bars are braggadocious and the references will definitely be felt by people of a certain age. It’s good to see the Harlem Bros, Cam & Mase link again.
Lil Baby & Young Thug - Never Hating: So Lil Baby had some snippets and a single or two that may have underwhelmed. There were whispers in the streets of him being washed. Then he dropped the 23-track album “It’s Only Me” and now everybody and they mama crowning him the best in show currently. This album is one of my favorites of the year. All the beats are A1, Lil Baby’s delivery has evolved over the years and he can handle anything thrown at him. And when a nigga winning like he winnin you know everything he say is all facts, no cap. Go check out “It’s Only Me” and these highlights:
Real Spill
Stand On It
California Breeze
Perfect Timing
Forever (ft. Fridayy)
In A Minute
Double Down
Danger
Back & Forth (with EST Gee)
Shiest Talk (ft. Pooh Sheisty)
No Fly Zone
Nardo Wick ft. Polo G - G Nikes: Nardo Wick re-released the Deluxe of his debut album “Who Is Nardo Wick?” with “G Nikes” as the new addition. The beat reminds me of Jimmy Wopo’s “Elm Street”. Nardo delivers a catchy hook about opps and fellatio. It’s like a gangsta nursery rhyme. Polo G spits an aggressive verse over the aggressive beat and offers a nice contrast to Nardo’s laid back flow.
Tee Grizzley - Shakespeare’s Classic: Tee Grizzley currently has Hip-Hop’s storytelling crown with his new project “Chapters Of The Trenches”. The intro is dope because he offers context.. In summary: Tee Grizz can tell these stories because he lived it. “Shakespeare’s Classic” is one of the standalone tracks but it’s a story too and if you know how Romeo & Juliet ended, you got an idea of how this track ends (the hood version though). Go listen to “Chapters Of The Trenches” all the way through. You’ll be thoroughly entertained by all the twists and turns in the stories and TG’s effortless delivery.
Russ - BET: Russ musta been on summer break because he hasn’t released his usual weekly tracks (but he’s been featured on other artists). He also has been encouraging artists to build their own fan base and not rely on the machines, so that they’ll be uncancellable (it’s funny I’ve heard this same thing quite a few other places recently as well). He’s back with a new loosie this week called “BET”. The beat is epic, and Russ’s repeated “Bet!” chant really gets me hyped. He’s not afraid of heights anymore and he knows God got his back and puts his faith in the big fella.
Whookilledkenny - Glad I Spent It: Whokilledkenny dropped a new 5-Track EP this week called “Strictly Business”. I first came across Whokilledkenny when his song “Teach Her The Game” (which is on this EP) was featured on the Apple Music New Hip-Hop Playlist a couple weeks ago. My favorite track of the new drop is “Glad I Spent It”. WKK knows the importance of breaking bread and keeping his shawty happy. Check out “Strictly Business”, all the tracks slap. My other favorite track is “Worth It”.
Robert Glasper ft. Mac Miller - Therapy Pt. 2: Multi-hyphenate Robert Glasper dropped this new track off with the Deluxe of his most recent project “Black Radio III”. It’s crazy someone still had a Mac Miller verse in the tuck. Mac passed in 2018 and the verse makes references about the iPhone 6 (which came out in 2014) and even a reference to Joe Budden rapping (he’s been “retired” for years). Mac’s bars still stand the test of time and he was one of the best young voices in the game. Check out “Black Radio III: Supreme Edition”, jazzy tracks with some of the most soulful voices in Music providing the vocals.
Central Cee - Chapters: UK spitter Central Cee dropped an EP this week called “No More Leaks”. The opening track is a banger and it samples the DJ Snake & Future’s “U Are My High” (one of my favorite tracks that dropped in the past year). Of course CC adds some UK Drill sauce on it.
Stormzy - Hide & Seek: UK legend Stormzy seems to be gearing up to drop a project soon. After dropping “Mel Made Me Do It” he’s back with this new loosie “Hide & Seek”. This one is downtempo with an Afrobeat vibe. It’s a love song to his main damie. I bet him and the young lady in the video play Hide & Seek with the meat. Nah but for real, it’s introspective, about the rough patches of a relationship and how to work through them. Can’t wait for this album to drop.
Beeda Weeda, Too Short & Mistah Fab ft. Kev’on - Thottie: Bay Area’s finest came together for a loosie about the fairer sex. Bouncy West Coast snap beat. You’ll hear this playing in a club near you soon. Short Dawg is one of the kings of these club anthems. I don’t know how eager the ladies will be to shake ass to “You’s a Thottie, you for everybody” but they prolly be so lit they only hear the beat and keep that ass in rotation (respectfully).
Joey Fatts - On Me: Cali rapper Joey Fatts dropped a new project this week called “G Way 3” (and he made sure you knew the title as “G Way” is repeated throughout the album). I loved GW3 and even though I’m Jersey born & raised, albums like this have me feeling like a West Coast nigga at heart (and my family was on 2pac’s side of the Biggie beef, and I didn’t hear a Biggie album in full til I was a sophomore in college). Back to Joey, it was hard to pick a favorite but I love “On Me”. It’s got the West Coast summer time vibe as Fatts describes cruising the Cali streets and everything he sees and does on a typical day. You gotta check out “G Way 3” and these standouts:

Gang Gang
Ooh Ohh (ft. Kamaiyah)

Can’t FWM
Mach-Hommy ft. Tha God Fahim - Gossamer Wings: Jersey spitter (and hidden Negro like myself) Mach-Hommy dropped a new project called “Duck Czn: Tiger Style” and THERE ARE NO SKIPS! I mean there’s a skit but who doesn’t wanna be told that they’re a tiger that has the scrappiness of an alleycat. This is my favorite Mach-Hommy project and I think it’s the most digestible to the average fan. The beats have the boom-bap core but it’s smoothed out by some soulful/melodic elements and the drums being deemphasized on some tracks like one of my absolute faves “Gossamer Wings” which has no drums at all. Check out “Duck Czn: Tiger Style” there’s a track on there for every fan of real Hip-Hop.
Big Boss Vette - Pretty Girls Walk: Found this one on the Apple Music New Hip-Hop playlist and while it’s not my usual bag, the beat is dope and Big Boss Vette adds her vocals and makes it a catchy tune. Funky, and super saucy, BBV raps that “all the pretty girls walk like this” and this should run up the numbers on the radio and Tik Tok.
French Montana - Whippn It Slowly: Shoutout to French mane. He been through a lot. Immigrating to the US, getting shot at, losing homies to the grave (Chinx) and the bing (Max B) and he still finds a way to smile through it all. Even when niggas hate on him, it don’t stop him from making music. He dropped a loosie this week. It’s a re-rock of The Fugees “Killing Me Softly with His Song” but about whipping that yayo. If you like the Fugees track, go give this one a spin.
Smoke DZA ft. Steven Young - Right Now: Smoke DZA dropped a new project called “10,000 Hours” the title a nod to the claim in one of Malcolm Gladwell’s books that in order to master something you have to do it for 10,000 hours. Well DZA put in his time and this album is proof. My favorite track is “Right Now” with Steven Young. It’s a change of pace for SD as he spits one for the ladies. It samples Biggie’s hit “Fucking You Tonight” and has a Puff intro. Tough Tune. Check out “10,000 Hours” and be sure to listen for these highlights:
North Face Bombers (ft. The Game)
Top of the Morning (ft. Ransom)
Wish Upon a Star (ft. Curren$y)
1000 Grams
RJmrLA & Ty Dolla $ign - Special Delivery: Two SoCal boys dropped a loosie this week. Both RJ and Ty Dolla have unique voices and they mesh well over this flip of Usher’s “U Don’t Have to Call”. Soulful, dedicated to the ladies and an all-around great track.
G Herbo - No Guts, No Glory: Herbo dropped the B Side to his most recent project “Survivor’s Remorse”. The B Side is just as good as the A. Hard beats, aggressive rhymes, Herbo being Herbo. My favorite track on the B Side is “No Guts, No Glory”. It’s that real playa shit. The beat got a down south Baptist church sauce to it. Downtempo, G Herbo lays down his code, if he can’t bring his heat he ain’t going. He knows when the haters mention his name, it’s just for promo. He’s got 3 kids and 3 cribs, he feels like an OG in the game. And being an OG he feels it’s his duty to bestow the game to the youngins. More highlights from “Survivor’s Remorse” (Side B):
History
Me, Myself & I (ft. A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie)
Him
2 Chainz - 2 Step: The LeBron-Tity Boi connection runs deep. Chainz is a former collegiate baller (I believe he’s 6’6”). LeBron EP’d one of his previous albums (Rap or Go to the League-2019) and now LeBron is executive producing the new “House Party” remake and the movie is even set in LeBron’s home, so it’s only right he enlists his boy to drop a track for what’s sure to be a dance-heavy, party music-filled film. And this track “2 Step” is the first release from the soundtrack. It’s a flip of Kool and the Gang’s “Hollywood Swingin’” and you can bet the farm that it’ll appear in the film, probably to a dance sequence (or montage of the main characters dancing around the house).
Compton Av, Steelz & G Perico - Shine: Cali seems to dominate The Hit List week to week. I don’t know if it’s because they got so many artists or because all of em put out damn good music, but the Golden State is always representin’, They got another one with “Shine” by Compton Av, Steelz & G Perico. I found this one on the Apple Music New Hip Hop playlist and I’m glad I did because it’s goodie. Go check it out.
Day Sulan ft. YG - Slide-In: 4Hunnid signee Day Sulan dropped a new 7-track project this week called “Crazy Girls” and the track with 4Hunnid boss, YG, is a super standout. It has vocal runs that sounds like 112’s hit “Anywhere” and has a mellow snap beat. Day Sulan’s melodic delivery and sexy talk about good lovin really put you in the mode. And we know YG can hold his own on these Grown & Sexy tracks. Check out “Crazy Girls” and these other standouts:
