The Hit List week 78: (October 17 - October 23)
Jeezy & DJ Drama - Still Havin: It feel like ‘05 again! Legends in the game DJ Drama and (formerly Young) Jeezy dropped a new project this week called “SNOFALL” and it’s a banger. From the hardest of beats and bars to tracks like “Still Havin” a flip of Michael Jackson’s “Nigerian Girl”, and “How Deep” with a Keith Sweat sample, Dram and Jeezy Still Havin motion. Go check out “SNOFALL” and don’t miss these highlights:
Most Hated (with Lil Durk)
Street Cred
MJ Jeezy
I Ain’t Gon Hold Ya
How Deep
BIG SNO
Pivot Gang - Aang: Pivot Gang back with another banger. I still have “Jason Statham” in heavy rotation. “Aang” has a dope vocal sample in the back. The guys display their top shelf lyricism as they describe their neighborhoods and upcoming (with their gang nigga!). The second verse starts like “Lookin Boy” (point em out). One of the best bars: “Nigga, nigga, nigga, like Trinidad James… with my chains, nigga”.
Fredo Bang ft. BOG Vonnie - My Body: Fredo Bang has blown up over the past couple years and it’s not just his authenticity and his disgust for the opps. He’s one of the best beat pickers, and he can handle so many pockets and flows. He dropped a new project this week called “UNLV”. The first track is about paying for somebody to slide on a opp when you’re too busy. And the range he displays to go from that to one of my favs “My Body” a flip of Pretty Ricky’s “Your Body” is why he’s one of the young greats. Go listen to “UNLV” and these standouts:
Pay For It (with Tee Grizzley & Soulja Slim)
Dog Azz (ft. JayDaYoungan)
Free Thug
Throw Away (ft. G Herbo)
Last One Left
Hard 4 U
Hate Me ft. (Seven7Hardaway)
Tony Shhnow - Can’t Say I’m Broke: New artist alert! I found this in that gold mine called the Apple Music New Hip-Hop playlist and it’s a certified bop! You can say what you want, but you can’t say Tony Shhnow is broke. His chick is bad to the bone and he’s never alone (because he got the Glizzy on him). He thanks God every morning then gets to the bread.
Salmin Swaggz - COME BACK: One of my new favorite artists dropped a project this week. I’m talking about Salmin Swaggz and “Flight Mode”. The tracks have Afrobeat vibes and SS delivers the lyrics in a mixture of English and Swahili (I believe). Admittedly, I don’t understand most of it, but it’s a vibe and one of my favorite tracks “COME BACK” has one of the catchiest hooks of the year that’ll be sure to have your shawty coming back. Check out “Flight Mode” and these highlights:
DESTINY (ft. Gosby)
WHATEVER I WANT (ft. khalil)
UNANIKOMOA
FORGIVE ME (ft. Young Lunya)
STAY ON IT
PESA (ft. Sanja Kong)
Roddy Ricch - Aston Martin Truck: Roddy must have an album on the way. I think this is the third loosie he’s dropped in the last couple months (not including all the features he’s been on). He’s rapping about that luxury life. Aston Martin trucks. Getting maids & butlers for his mansion. Money, cake, cream, and diamond rings, these are a few of Roddy’s favorite things.
NBA Youngboy ft. Yeat - I Don’t Text Back: Youngboy back with “Ma I Got a Family” his 3rd project in like a month. This time it’s a surprise Gangsta Grillz with DJ Drama (say what!?) Drama put in work this week with Jeezy, Snoop and this surprise YB project. One of my favorite tracks is the Yeat collab (I believe it’s their 1st track together) where they lay down the law for their bitties. The message is simple, they Don’t Text Back. They be booted up, they get money, and love doggystyle sex. If they shawty start tripping, she shouldn’t expect a response from YB or Y-eat. Go give “Ma I Got a Family” a listen.
Ab Soul ft. Zacari - Do Better: After a lil hiatus Solo has been dropping tracks this year (with plans for an album drop soon I’d assume). This new loosie “Do Better” might be my favorite of his recent drops. It has a soulful vocal loop (y'all know I’m a sucker for those). Ab motivates us to Do Better today, before it’s too late. He spits about accountability, getting in line with your chakras, and risk vs. reward. If you need a track to uplift you, this is the one.
Fridayy ft. Vory - God Sent: I think I first caught wind of Fridayy when he was featured on Khaled’s “GOD DID” track with Hov and that legendary verse. Since then he’s been gaining some traction. I’ve seen him featured on some A-list artists projects & tracks. Now, he’s back with his own EP this week called “Lost In Melody”. Guy’s got a bright future. His ascent reminds me of Vory, who is featured on my favorite track of the project God Sent. Vory was poppin as King Vory but it was that Ye co-sign that got the industry blowing his phone up. The same will happen with Fridayy and especially after everyone hears“Lost In Melody”.
Jeremih - Changes: Jeremiah got with his Chicago brethren (and the 2022 Winner of Producer of the Year at the BET Hip-Hop Awards) Hitmaka for this loosie. It’s a flip of Avant’s “Read Your Mind” and if you love the original you’ll love what Jeremih and Berg Hitmaka did with this one.
Elcamino & Jae Skeese - Knowledge: Buffalo, NY’s own Elcamino dropped a new album this week called “Gold Bricks”. Like MachHommy’s drop last week it has those hard street bars, that boom-bap feel, but is also smoothed out with toned down drums (or no drums) on a few tracks. My favorite track “Knowledge” has no drums, just strings and some of the best bars on this list. Check out “Gold Bars” if you’re a fan of that Griselda sound, that Hip-Hop Hip-Hop, or if you just shot somebody and need something to cool out to.
Anderson .Paak & Knxwledge ft. H.E.R. - Where I Go: Anderson .Paak so poppin, him and Bruno Mars withdrew their Silk Sonic project from Grammy consideration because they knew they’d clean up (again!) The music never stops though and AP is back with a loosie featuring multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, H.E.R. This track is funky, with neo-soul vibes, and Anderson use it as an opportunity to sing to his main damie. His shawty wanna know where he’s been and where he's going. And even though she gives him the third degree, he loves her from head to toe (and everywhere in between!). H.E.R. sings that her bae is her Cinnamon Apple and she warns him that when he departs he better not be with no side bitties.
Armani Cesar - Queen City: The Queen of Griselda dropped a new project this week called “THE LIZ 2” with the cover displaying Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor (and the album features an interview of hers on a skit). Super dope project with some super dope features (you know the Griselda fam showed up). “Queen City” is my favorite track. Downtempo, groovy beat, Mani Krueger talks that boss talk. She came in the game with her weapons drawn and she steppin on the opps necks. She’s been grinding, and now she’s shining, with millis in her bank account to boot. Go listen to “THE LIZ 2” and make sure to check for these standouts:
Paula Deen (ft. Westside Gunn)
Hunnit Dollar Hiccup (with Benny The Butcher ft. Stove God Cooks)
Liz Claiborne Jr 1 & 2
El Puro (ft. Conway The Machine)
Sike (with BeatKing ft. Queendom Come)
Hit-boy ft. Curren$y - Tony Fontana III: Hit-boy been barring us up for the last 365 days, I’m thinking we might be getting an album from him in the not too distant future. He dropped this loosie off this week with The Hot Spitta. HB is a cheat code because he can chef his own beats and save the best for himself and this beat is undoubtedly one of the best of the year.
Wiz Khalifa - Funkin: Young Khalifa dropped the Deluxe of his most recent album “Multiverse” with 3 bonus tracks. My favorite of the trio is Funkin, which has a bouncy, P-Funk-ish beat that has Wiz talking that real playa talk. Whenever his shawty wants to funk, he’ll be right there to pick her up in his Range Rover truck. He wants to funk her up. He even drops some French in a voice like Goldie from The Mack.
Smino - Matinee: Smino’s got an album droppin any day now. He decided to bless us with one last appetizer before the main course. Beat fire (something you might hear Drizzy on). Smi’ uses his falsetto alt-voice to spit the hook. He’s been drinking & smoking all night and been traveling all around the world (including St. Lucia). He has many bitties and he doesn't stress them, he just stretches them out (in a good way).
Snoop Dogg & DJ Drama ft. Dave East - My City: DJ Drama unloaded the clip this week. In addition to the Jeezy & YB tapes we’ve already highlighted, he also dropped ”I Still Got It” a Gangsta Grillz with Snoop (and I believe this is their 2nd one). Whole tape fire. Snoop’s recent acquisition of Death Row has allowed him to multiply his boss moves and put on some other artists from the label including one of my favorites October London. Snoop’s got two Dave East features on the project and my favorite track is one of them, “My City” where the guys go bar for bar about their respective cities and their allegiance to the Blue flag. Check out “I Still Got It” and these highlights:
I’ll Holla Back ft. Kurupt & Dave East)
Lit (ft. Daz Dillinger)
No Half Steppin
Lime & Squeeze (with October London)
Lancey Foux - Spirit of X2C: Canadian crooner Lancey Foux dropped a catchy track this week. It’s one of my favorites on the list and I’ve been playing it all week. It’s a slow jam. The background vocals give it that powerful choir feeling. Lancey just wants his shawty next to him, in the spirit of Love and the Spirit of X2C (alphanumeric spelling of ecstasy).
bbno$ - bag or die: Canadian spitter bbno$ dropped a new album this week called “bag or die” and it might be my favorite drop this week. My favorite track (the title track) “bag or die” starts with a fiesta of keys. BB likes to sip on Tequila (because it’s tasty of course). He feels like his life is a movie. He’s crossing borders like he’s coloring outside the lines. He's a serial monogamist and his shawty is a vegan but she gobbles on his turkey. You gotta listen to “bag or die” and these standouts:
Chipotle
let em know
piccolo
robert patekson
deadman (ft. Lil Toe)
vasectomy
mathematics
sophisticated
e-girl anthem
Blueface & OG Bobby Billions - Better Days 2 (Pain in the Ghetto): This is the first time I heard Blueface on a socially conscious track. It’s a departure from what we’ve seen him do in the past and it’s a dope track. Him & OG Bobby Billions tell the truth about their surroundings. They know they got a lot of haters and niggas coming for they chicken every day. Shit get wicked on their side of town. They bend but don’t break but they tired of bending (pause, unpause). They just tryna touch millions and get away from the foolishness.
RJmrLA ft. Symba & Jayson Cash - Fruits Of My Labor: I bet you can guess where RJmrLA is from. The frequent Mustard collaborator dropped a project this week called “Rodney Brown Jr.” It was a dope project and it was the 1st cohesive project I can remember hearing since Kendrick’s drop (it has a throughline, a story and themes and shit). RJ starts the project talking about how his family was living good till them boys came and his pops away. His life was turned upside down, and him and his fam had to get it out the mud. I love the Symba & Jayson Cash collab, the whole album is heat, so just go listen to “Rodney Brown Jr” and thank me later.
The Raid
Stop Playing With Me
Aye Bitch (with O.T. Genasis)
Fuck It Up (with Joe Moses)
Special Delivery (ft. Ty Dolla $ign)
Deservant
Dead Homies
GOON DES GARCONS* ft. Solo Jaxon - makeshift magic: I found this track on the Apple Music New Hip-Hop playlist and it’s a bop. GOON DES GARCONS* is a Def Jam signee who has styled himself as a “Black Trash Rockstar” (love it!) He dropped a loosie this week with Solo Jaxon (unrelated to Michael). The beat is A1 with top tier lyrics to match. Play this one while cruising in the whip, it for sure knocks.
DJ Luke Nasty - Welcome To My World: DJ Luke Nasty dropped a project this week called “Highway Music 3” and it’s a goody. I first came across Luke Nasty when he flipped Kirk Franklin’s “Melodies From Heaven” into the strip club banger “Rain”. I really love the opening track of the new project “Welcome to My World”. Over a soulful snap beat, DJLN gives a brief synopsis of his come up. The women he wishes he would’ve treated better, the haters who hate him when he samples music (and when he doesn’t) and the music industry for being so cutthroat and leaving him with scraps. Throughout it all, he weathered the storm, stayed the course, and he’s now making bread in large amounts. Other standouts from “Highway Music 3”
Fendi Slides
Hey Big Head
Fine AF
Back it Up
Double Shifts
Snoop Dogg, E-40, Too Short & Ice Cube ft. P-LO - Too Big: Mount Westmore, the Rap supergroup composed of Ice Cube, Snoop, Too Short and E-40 is gearing up to drop an album soon. They’ve already blessed us with a few singles and they’re back this week with a loosie featuring fellow Cali artist P-Lo. “Too Big” is about Living Large, big cars, big jewelry, big blunts and big ass booties.
Babyface & Muni Long - The Recipe: Music icon Babyface dropped a new project this week with some of the most poppin ladies in music called “Girls Night Out”. With Babyface at the helm this was certain to be a work of art (and it is). My favorite track is “The Recipe” with one of my new favorite artists Muni Long (who’s been one of the industry’s in-demand writers for quite some time). Muni sings about getting home and her man starts grilling her. She tells mans to stop being a whiner and complainer, giver some space, pour her a glass of wine and sit his ass down. That’s The Recipe for keeping her happy. Check out “Girls Night Out” and these highlights:
Liquor (ft. Ari Lennox)
Simple (with Coco Jones)
Whatever (with Tink)
Jim Jones & Hitmaka ft. BEAM - Gunshot: Capo got back in the studio with Hitmaka for this track with some island vibes. With a title like “Gunshot” you know he talking bout shooting niggas (in theory of course). BEAM add some sauce on the hook with the Reggae bars and the guys have them a certified hit (not like a murder… a hit song…)
Soulja Boy ft. Desiigner - It’s On Sight: Big Soulja dropped a new project this week called “First To Do It” the title is a nod to his viral Breakfast Club interview where he claimed to be the 1st rapper to do many things. That train has kept rolling as NLE Choppa claimed to be the 1st rapper to walk an NBA team out (like boxers come out) but was refuted quickly by Soulja. This new project is dupe, you get some Soulja bars, Soulja melodies, Autotune Soulja and Shootem up Soulja. My favorite track is It’s On Sight with Desiigner (who provides his signature ad libs). Go check out “First To Do It” and these highlights:
All My Diamonds
Like It’s My Birthday
Paris, France
Bic Fizzle - Chief: New 1017 has been on a helluva run. Exec Gucci has signed a roster full of all stars and the youngest in charge Bic Fizzle came through with some hot fire this week. It’s a reflective track. BF talks about the struggle and how it brings the best out of you (you gon’ grind or you gon’ stress). He been working hard, he just told his pops to quit his job, gave his sister money to start a business (a hair salon) and bought a Bentley for his brother. He always knew he’d be rich as fuck.
