The Hit List Week 79: (October 24 - October 30)
Kodak Black - If You Ever: Florida Bill dropped a new project this week called “Kutthroat Bill: Vol 1”. One of the reasons Kodak became one of the biggest artists in Hip-Hop (and was prominently featured on one of the Biggest albums of the year, Kendrick’s “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers”) is because his music is honest, vulnerable, and he can go from talking about eliminating his opps to talking about the pain he feels from not being able to trust his shawty or his friends turning they back on him. He displays this range on “Kutthroat Bill: Vol 1”. Other highlights:
Kodak the Boss
Play (ft. Lil Cfix)
Walk
Hop Out Shoot
Rihanna - Lift Me Up: Queen Rih made a triumphant return this week after a 6 year hiatus. She just had her first child and is scheduled to perform at the Superbowl halftime show so this is a big year for her. Lift Me Up is a downtempo, soulful track that will surely play at sometime during Wakanda Forever (it’s the 1st track from the soundtrack) and you can’t help but reminisce about the late great Chadwick Boseman as it plays.
Smino, Lucky Daye & Phoelix - Modennaminute: King Smi dropped off his new project “Luv 4 Rent” this week and it had the internet going nuts. It’s gonna be on some AOTY lists and the whole thing is magnificent. My favorite track is the Lucky Daye & Phoelix collab “Modennaminute”. It’s a love song. Shawty’s been on Smino’s mind for more than a minute (Modennaminute). He was wasting time, making decisions, but now it’s time to pick her up and take her down. Check out “Luv 4 Rent” and these highlights:
No L’s
90 Proof (with J. Cole)
Pro Freak (with Doechii & Fatman Scoop)
Blu Billy
Matinee
Defibrillator
Pudgy (fr. Lil Uzi Vert)
IDK - Monsieur Dior: IDK has been on a hot streak. He’s back at again this week with a loosie. He’s had problems showing love when he feels it’s not reciprocated (naturally). He didn’t used to have a crib so he smashed bitties in the trap. He prays to the Lord (in the name of Dior). People try to judge him by his past. He also finds time to say Rest In Peace to his parents.
Baby Keem ft. Don Toliver & PinkPantheress - killstreaks: Over a year after its initial release Baby Keem released the deluxe to one of my favorite projects of the past decade “The Melodic Blue”. My favorite track of the Deluxe is the Don Toliver collab and Donny T really shows his ass on the track. A couple of the other tracks included were released previously like “Hooligan” and the remix to “Lost Souls” with Brent Faiyaz. Go give “The Melodic Blue” (Deluxe) a spin and don’t miss these standouts:
lost souls (ft. Brent Faiyaz)
no sense
fine china
highway 95
Killer Mike - TALK’N THAT SHIT!: Rapper, activist, and member of Run The Jewels, Killer Mike dropped a gem this week with “TALK’N THAT SHIT”. He’s also featured with his RTJ partner El-P on Westside Gunn’s album “10” that dropped this week. On TTS, Mike addresses the opps and their envy and opinions. The beat flips and he calls the haters leeches and warns them that he keeps that .223 locked and loaded.
Westside Gunn ft. Busta Rhymes, Ghostface Killah & Stove God Cooks - Science Class: What a great transition! Westside Gunn dropped his latest album which had a last minute title change due to all that’s going on in pop culture right now (see Ye, Kyrie). This will for sure be an AOTY candidate. The beats fire, the features range from Doe Boy, to legends like Busta and Blackstar, Run The Jewels, the Whole Griselda on the last track and DJ Drama on the intro and outro. This album is a moment in a year that’s had many. This one’s one of a kind. Also, I gotta shout out Stove God, he stole the show on this one. Do yourself a favor and check out “10” and these highlights:
Fly God Jr (ft. Doe Boy & DJ Drama)
Shootouts in Soho (ft. A$AP Rocky)
Peppas (ft. Blackstar)
Nigo Louis (ft. Westside Pootie)
God Is Love (ft. Keisha Plum, Estee Neck & Stove God Cooks)
Switches On Everything (ft. Run The Jewels & Stove God Cooks)
Red Death (ft. Jay Worthy, Benny The Butcher, Rome Streetz, Stove God Cooks, Armani Caesar, Conway the Machine & Robby Takac)
SZA - Shirt: SZA been teasing an album for quite some time. She’s hinted at some label issues but she must have gotten then (somewhat) ironed out as she dropped this new loosie this week. She laments about her past relationships and breaking away from the bullshit. Bitches getting on her nerves, and old niggas (that she curves). She feels the hurt on her skin like a shirt and she bout to take it off because she’s comfortable in her own skin.
dvsn - Touch It (Do It Well Pt. 4): Canadian R&B duo dvsn dropped their new project “Working On My Karma” this week and it’s R&B at its finest. They ruffled a lot of feathers with the first single but then the 2nd single offered more context and that first single fits into the theme of the album. My favorite track is “Touch It (Do It Well Pt. 4)” and it’s a banger. The beat knocks as Daniel croons to his main damie. He’s tryna put his hands all over her all the damn time. He’s kicking it, eating some Lemon Pepper wings and sipping Casamigos, but all he really wants is shawty. Other standouts from “Working On My Karma”:
Last Time (ft. Yung Bleu)
What’s Up (ft. Jagged Edge)
Hatin’
Take It Slow
Get Even
Berner - About Us: Young Bern dropped a double album this week called “From Seed To Sale” and for the Cannabis entrepreneur, the title is fitting. I’m a big Bern fan and I loved the project. My favorite track is “This Car” but I loved how Bern got in his socially conscious bag on “About Us”. It’s really a change of pace for Berner as he mostly raps about business, the luxury life, marijuana, and his come up. Check out “From Seed To Sale” and these standouts:
Back Around (ft. Cozmo & CJ Washington)
Conglomerate (ft. Mozzy & Cozmo)
Juice
Cold Champagne For Lunch
Spin The Block (ft. Wiz Khalifa)
If It’s Up (ft. Seddy Hendrix)
This Car
Gut
Money Man - Phenomenal: Money Man dropped off a new project this week called “Blackout” and also a loosie called “No Tourist” that I’ve had in heavy rotation (it’s not included on “Blackout”). My favorite track from the album is “Phenomenal”. Everything Money Man does is Phenomenal and all the bitties he messes with have Phenomenal box. He’s a vegan and only eats the finest of veggies and smokes the za-est of za. Certified niggas know he’s legitimate. Other standouts from “Blackout”:
Similar
Get Right
Triad
Get Active
NBA Youngboy - With Me: Just like when it comes to procreating, Youngboy don’t stop! This week he (with his crew Never Broke Again) dropped a project called “Never Broke Again: Nightmare on 38th Street”. One standout is from the boss himself. He’s in his melodic bag on this one. He sings to one of his bitties. He know she doesn’t need him but she fucks him like she does.
Babytron - Wake Tf Up: Babytron dropped a new project this week called “Bin Reaper 3: Old Testament” and if people ain’t familiar with BT yet, they will be soon. One of my favorite tracks is “Wake TF Up” which is a flip of the Rockwell & Michael Jackson classic “Somebody’s Watching Me”. Tron weaved it into a Detroit-type beat, added his witty bars, and he’s got a track that’ll be bumping in car stereos for months. Check out “Bin Reaper 3: Old Testament” and these standouts:
Silly Me
8th Wonder of the World
One Side of Things
D$M Cypher 2 (ft. $camaurion, JuSleaze, MJPAID, ScrumbleMan, Trdee, Fordio, J3, Stan Will & Donnie Bands)
AirTron
Lancey Foux ft. KAYTRANADA - LIES WILL SET YOU FREE: Canada’s Lancey Foux dropped a new project this week called “LIFE IN HELL”. It’s a nice mix of all his sounds from traditional sounding R&B to the experimental Rap/Rock/Falsetto that we see from Yeat & Playboi Carti. SPIRIT OF X2C is my jam, and of the album cuts, my favorite is one of the two collabs he has with Canadian SuperProducer (and Grammy-winner) Kaytranada, “LIES WILL SET YOU FREE”. Go listen to “LIFE IN HELL” and be sure to check out these highlights:
SPIRIT OF X2C
ALL NIGHT LONG
RIDE TIL YOU DIE
Now > Then (ft. 070 Shake)
WAKE UP/I’M ALIVE
BlueBucksClan - Homeless: Cali duo BlueBucks dropped a new album this week called “Clan Way 3”. My favorite track is “Homeless”. Over a bouncy snap beat with Summertime West Coast Vibes, the guys talk about their lavish life and all they do for one of their shorties. They also clown the opps and say they Homeless (and you should see the roofs that BBC is living under. Probably a mansion with wood floors in the kitchen you can dribble on). Other highlights from “Clan Way 3”:
Flyest of my Generation
Biggest Stepper
Only 4 the Night
Trippie Redd ft. Don Toliver - It Ain’t Safe: Trippie and Donny T!? Yes please! The two dropped this loosie this week that is about popping pills (that’s what ain’t safe). They got bitties moving in with kilos and poppin oxycontin, poppin percs, sippin lean, and they know that life is risky.
Yung Gravy - Smells Like Money: Yung Gravy went viral earlier this year when he showed up at an awards show with an A-list influencer’s mom, but he’s been making catchy, dope music long before that. He dropped a new project this week called “Marvelous”. Dope album, my favorite track has to be his flip of Salt n Pepa’s “Push It” where he describes bruising booty chicks and reproducing with OPP. Give “Marvelous” a listen and don’t miss these standouts:
Isn’t It Just Marvelous (ft. bbno$)
Mrs. Worldwide
Betty (Get Money)
Hot Tub (with T-Pain & Dillon Francis)
Polo G - Bag Talk: Chicago’s Polo G dropped a loosie this week. Hard beat, he talks about switches & dracos, Scat packs, his dead homies, and how even though he getting them bags, he still be having bad thoughts. He knows he can’t take no time off and that you reap what you sow. (Wise words from a decent man.)
Dee Watkins - Lyin To You: Florida artist Dee Watkins dropped a new project this week called "Quail Lane Baby". It's a dope project and my favorite part is a pocket in the middle where he gets in his Love Song bag. My favorite of those tracks is "Lyin To You". The beat has acoustic guitar chords as a main thread and Dee promises to put his shawty in designer and buy her what she wants because she's worth it. He knows he's not perfect but he's trying to be the best man he can be for her. Other highlights from "Quail Lane Baby":
For The Birds
Realer & Real (ft. Jackboy)
Dead Weight
Monaboat
Top Golf
Morray - Letter To Myself: North Carolina’s own dropped a new track and it’s deep in his pocket. It’s that introspective, reminiscent, country-rap music talking about the long road he took to get where he is today. Morray used to have night sweats, lights off, ran out of EBT, no weed, rent late, he worked for minimum wage. He asked God for a boost, and it took some time, but now Morray is getting the checks by the millions.
Bobby Schmurda & lougoutcash - FROM TIME: Bobby & lou dropped a collab album this week called “SHMURDAGOTCASH”. My favorite track is “FROM TIME” and I’ve had it on repeat all week. It has that Jersey club sound that I’ve seen re-emerge over the past month with Philly’s 2Rare and it samples Jodeci’s “My Heart Belongs to You” (which Drake also sampled on "How Bout Now"). Tough Tune.
